Yazidis visit Lalish for Sefra Nan u Mast ritual

Yazidis brought bread and yogurt to the holy Lalish Temple as part of the centuries-old Sefra Nan u Mast tradition ahead of their new year

“This is the path of our ancestors. Our forefathers preserved this and we are obligated to preserve this path like them. A person is known by their nature. No matter what happens, one should not abandon the traditions of their ancestors. One must follow in the footsteps of their forefathers,” Nafia Asfar, a Yazidi woman taking part in the ceremony, told Rudaw on Saturday.

The Yazidi faithful carrying offerings of bread (nan) and yogurt (mast) were met by the religious leader Baba Chawish.

The yogurt offerings are handed over to Nala Faqiri, the temple caretaker, and a portion is used to prepare dough. This is done by mixing it with water drawn from the sacred Zamzam and Kaniya Spi springs, which hold significance in Yazidi traditions.

The bread is placed in a designated sacred area within the temple. As part of the ritual, a portion of the bread is ceremonially sprinkled with water.

“It's very nice that all the villagers gather together and we pray for ourselves. God willing, may it be a year of goodness and happiness,” said Zawra Mirza, another Yazidi woman participating in the ritual.

The ceremony concludes with traditional dancing. These ancient practices passed down through generations reflect the enduring cultural and spiritual heritage of the Yazidi people.

The Yazidis have endured years of suffering under the Islamic State (ISIS), losing many loved ones to the group’s violent acts. ISIS militants abducted more than 6,000 Yazidis, mainly young women and children, when in 2014 they seized control of Shingal in northern Iraq.

The fate of 2,832 of them remains unknown, according to the most recent statistics from the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

The office has also documented 93 mass graves of Yazidis who were killed by ISIS militants between 2014 and 2017.

Turkey Calls for Resolution to Shingal Crisis

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged the Iraqi government to expedite efforts to resolve the status of Shingal, while reiterating Turkey’s expectation that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) must respond clearly to the recent call by its jailed leader Abdullah Öcalan to abandon armed struggle

Speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday, Fidan emphasized that Ankara continues to expect a “constructive and timely” response from the PKK to Öcalan’s long-anticipated message—warning, however, that internal fractures and “ideological rigidity” within the group may prevent it from embracing a path of de-escalation.

“We are waiting for the PKK to respond to Öcalan’s call,” Fidan said, adding, “but there is a real possibility that internal dogmatism will derail this chance for peace.”

Iraq’s Role in Stabilizing Shingal

Touching on the protracted instability in Iraq’s Shingal district—a region plagued by overlapping armed groups and unresolved governance disputes—Fidan was unequivocal in calling on Baghdad to act decisively.

“The Shingal issue must be resolved without further delay,” he stated, urging the Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibilities and restore state authority over the region.

Shingal has long been a flashpoint for geopolitical tension, with PKK-affiliated elements remaining active in defiance of the 2020 Shingal Agreement signed between Baghdad and Erbil. Turkey has frequently accused these groups of undermining regional stability and jeopardizing the security of its southern border.

Turkey: No Appetite for Regional Confrontation

Fidan also addressed Turkey’s position on the broader Syrian conflict, emphasizing Ankara’s preference for diplomacy over escalation. Referring specifically to Israel’s intensified military activity in Syria, he warned that such operations threaten regional equilibrium.

“We are engaged in technical dialogue with Israel to reduce tensions in Syria,” Fidan said. “But let me be clear: Turkey does not seek confrontation with any country inside Syrian territory—not with Israel, nor with others.”

He underlined that Syria should be allowed to determine its own defensive and foreign policy without external interference, saying, “It is vital that Syria takes ownership of its own national security strategy and regional posture.”

DEM Party Meeting and Political Reconciliation

Fidan’s remarks come just one day before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to meet with a delegation from the pro-Kurdish Equality and Democracy of Peoples Party (DEM Party), a dialogue that has drawn considerable attention both domestically and abroad.

According to Turkish officials, the talks are expected to focus on national reconciliation, potential avenues for renewed dialogue with the Kurdish movement, and the broader trajectory of peace in Turkey.

Observers say the timing is critical: The PKK is reportedly preparing to convene a landmark conference this month, where it may formally announce its intention to lay down arms—an outcome that would mark a historic shift in a conflict that has cost tens of thousands of lives over four decades.

A Fragile Opportunity for De-escalation

Despite Turkey’s insistence that it will not tolerate cross-border threats from PKK-linked factions in Syria or Iraq, the Turkish leadership appears to be signaling a cautious openness to political dialogue—provided that it yields tangible outcomes.

“We must not miss this window,” Fidan noted, referring to the wider peace process. “The region cannot afford further destabilization, especially when the potential for real progress exists.”

Exemption for Yazidi Women
    from Age, GPA Requirements
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has approved a proposal to exempt Yazidi women from age and grade point average requirements for admission to universities and postgraduate studies, Minister of Migration and Displacement Evan Faeq Jabro announced on Thursday

According to a statement from the ministry, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the decision aims to support displaced women returning to their communities.

“In line with the principles of equality and to ensure their independence within the family and society, the minister secured the prime minister’s approval for a set of proposals designed to ease the challenges faced by returning women, in coordination with the relevant sectoral bodies,” the statement said.

Among the approved measures is an exemption allowing Yazidi women to apply to higher education institutions regardless of age limits and with a GPA allowance of up to 10 points or more below standard thresholds—a move described as a significant step toward supporting their education and reintegration into society.

Minister Jabro expressed her gratitude to the prime minister for “his continued support of women’s issues and efforts to improve their status across all sectors.”

Kurdish leaders extended their congratulations to the Yazidi community on the occasion of their New Year, Çarşema Sor, emphasizing the need to safeguard the Yazidis’ rights, traditions and future

Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani issued a statement extending his “warm congratulations to all Yazidi brothers and sisters in Kurdistan and around the world, wishing them happiness and peace.”

The renowned Kurdish figure added, “I hope for an end to the pain, displacement, and hardships that have been imposed upon the Yazidis by terrorists and enemies of our people, and for the Yazidi brothers and sisters to return freely to their homes and places of origin.”
The KDP leader also urged all parties to work together to ensure the Yazidis can “decide their own fate, protect their rights, culture, and traditions, and begin to heal from the trauma they’ve endured.”

For his part, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also marked the occasion, writing on X, “I congratulate all Yazidi brothers and sisters in Kurdistan and the world on the Yazidi New Year. I hope you have a holiday filled with joy and happiness.”

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) also issued a statement, extending “warmest congratulations to the Yazidi brothers and sisters in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world” and “wishing them a celebration full of joy and happiness.”

The PUK highlighted the importance of “accelerating the steps to restore a dignified life for Yazidis,” stressing that it is the “duty and responsibility of all political parties, the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government [of Iraq] in order to guarantee their permanent stability and ensure they never face the danger of attacks again.”

The Yazidi New Year, Çarşema Sor (Red Wednesday), falls on the first Wednesday of the April in the Julian and the first Wednesday on or after 14 April according to the Gregorian calendar. The most important rituals take place at Lalish Temple in the mountains of Duhok, north of the Kurdistan Region, where Yazidis light candles and gather in prayer.
In 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) launched an assault on Shingal, abducting 6,417 Yazidi women and children, many of whom were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labor.

As of nowmost 3,000 Yazidis remain missing, according to the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

Young man freed after 11 years

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Tuesday that they have rescued a Yazidi man who was abducted by the Islamic State (ISIS) around 11 years ago, when he was just eight years old. The individual was taken along with his family during ISIS’s brutal assault on the predominantly Yazidi district of Shingal (Sinjar) in the summer of 2014

In a statement, the SDF said that its military operations units carried out a “special security operation” on March 12, 2025 to free the kidnapped Yazidi individual.

For privacy reasons, Rudaw has identified the young man only by his initials, O.K.

According to the SDF, the Yazidi man “is originally from the village of al-Wardiya in the Sinjar region, which witnessed large-scale massacres committed by ISIS, and where thousands of men, youth, and elders were killed, and more than 7,000 women and girls were abducted.” O.K. “was one of the victims of that massacre.”
Now 19, O.K. was quoted by the SDF statement as sharing the harrowing story of his abduction by ISIS.

“I was born in 2006, and I was just a child when ISIS kidnapped me in 2014. ISIS captured me and my family, but separated me and my brother.”

He said that he was held in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which ISIS in 2014 declared as the capital of its proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq. He remained in Mosul for three months before being separated from his brother and transferred, along with 60 other Yazidi children, to the city of Albu Kamal in eastern Syria.

“After arriving in Al-Bukamal, ISIS subjected us to a three-year religious indoctrination course. I was given the name ‘Osama al-Sinjari.’ Then we were moved to the Syrian desert for another three years of military training,” he recounted.

Following that, he was sent to the Homs desert in western Syria, where he served as an ISIS fighter for four years. During this time, he sustained a landmine injury to his right leg.

O.K. noted that near the end of 2024 and “while I was getting treatment at one of the ISIS hideouts in the Homs desert, the hideout was struck by an intense airstrike from the [US-led] Global Coalition [to Defeat ISIS], which resulted in the death of 20 terrorists, including high-ranking commanders.”

“I miraculously survived the bombing,” he said, expressing his relief and gratitude toward the SDF for “liberating him and thousands of other Yazidis, particularly women, from the grip of ISIS.”
During its 2014 assault on Shingal, ISIS abducted 6,417 Yazidi women and children, many of whom were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labor. Although the group was territorially defeated in Iraq by 2017 and in Syria by 2019, it continues to pose a security threat in the region.

As of now almost 3,000 Yazidis remain missing, according to the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

Yazidis embrace new beginnings
    at Lalish new year celebrations
Nestled in the mountains of Duhok province’s Shekhan district, Lalish Temple, the holiest site in the Yazidi faith, hosted Chwarshama Sur (Red Wednesday) on Tuesday evening. The ancient celebration, considered the oldest and most sacred Yazidi tradition, marks the beginning of creation and the renewal of life

The Lalish site, believed to date back approximately 4,000 years, reflects deep-rooted heritage, with ancient symbols etched into its stone structures, each representing narratives and rituals tied to the historical and religious foundations of the Yazidi faith.

Chwarshama Sur (Red Wednesday), one of the most ancient and sacred celebrations in the Yazidi faith, marking the new year, was hosted on Tuesday evening at the holy Lalish Temple in Shekhan district

“Since ancient times, the peoples of the Middle East have welcomed this festival and celebrated it in various ways, with each region calling it by a different name. Yezidis call it the New Year Festival, Babylonians call it the Akitu Festival, and Sumerians call it the Zikmak Festival,” Luqman Mahmoud, from the Lalish communication center, told Rudaw English at the temple.

Each year, Yazidis from around the world return to the Kurdistan Region to celebrate Red Wednesday at the holy Lalish Temple, where they offer prayers and light fires, a deeply rooted symbol in their faith to welcome the rise of life and the new year.

“Fire has a special sacredness in Yazidi mythology. Throughout historical periods, from the time of Sumerian civilization to Babylonian, Median, and Mithraic civilizations, fire has been lit in their temples. Since the Yazidis are the continuation of these civilizations, fire also has a special sacredness in their religious practices,” said Yazidi writer Hogir Haydo.

Haydo noted that, according to belief, the first person to light the sacred fire was named Yazidi, a figure whose act is said to have inspired the fire-lighting ritual that continues in Yazidism to this day.

On the eve of the festival, Yazidis light candles and oil wicks as religious singers recite hymns and prayers throughout the sacred valley.

“This festival dates back to the time when human civilization emerged. This festival was first celebrated in the city of Eridu [viewed as a symbolic place of origin], and until now, the traditions and rituals of the Yazidis continue,” Haydo added.

As part of the ritual, Yazidis boil eggs on the festival day, attaching them with a mixture of mud and special spices. The mixture and the egg are then applied above entrance doors, with a flower placed at the center, symbolizing renewal and protection.

“Among the rituals of this festival, early on the morning of the festival, women wake up to hang red flowers along with the Giyay Benav [nameless herb] and colored eggshells over the doorways of houses. This is a sign and symbol of the new year, the month of April, and spring, and is a very ancient symbol in Yazidism,” Khald Khdr from the Lalish Media Network said in a statement in 2019.

Farmers hold a sacred role in Yazidism, and the use of eggshells from the festival carries symbolic meaning. The shells are scattered over farmland the following day as a natural fertilizer to nourish the earth. Planting is avoided during this time, as Yazidis believe the earth is reborn and must be treated as a newborn.

Yazidis also refrain from marriage during the second half of April, believing it marks the beginning of the new year, a sacred period in which the month itself is regarded as a bride.

The cultural richness of the site and its rituals draw a great number of tourists each year, particularly during Yazidi ceremonies.

A group of tourists from Utiel municipality in Spain’s Valencia, who joined the celebrations with a Kurdish tour guide, expressed admiration for the richness of Kurdish culture and the depth of Yazidi traditions.

“My friends and I are coming from Utiel in Spain, and we found out about this event thanks to my guide who brought us here and told us about this special tradition, and all about it, and so far we are having a great time. We didn't know anything about it, and we are so amazed because we haven't seen anything like that before,” Laura Ortiz, the visiting tourist, told Rudaw English.

“Our main goal was to change the image of Kurdistan, which is always linked with war and negativity, to show the real beauty that really exists,” said Mohammed Dilshad, the tourism company founder.

“We were successful to show many different, represent actually many different minorities of Kurdistan to the world as well. For example, we did a tour for the Akito festival, which is the Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian New Year, and then the Yazidi New Year, which is the Chashambah Serenisani [ first wednesday of yezidi new year], and we were able to bring a lot of people to see this celebration,” he added.

The Yazidi ethnoreligious community bore the brunt of the Islamic State’s (ISIS) atrocities during their brazen offensive across large swathes of Iraq in 2014, particularly as the jihadists moved on the community’s heartland of Shingal (Sinjar) and captured it.

In the assault on Shingal, ISIS militants abducted 6,417 Yazidi women and children, many of whom were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labor. Although the group was territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, it continues to pose a security risk.

To date almost 3,000 individuals are still missing, according to statistics provided by Hussein Qaidi, head of the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis, affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

Yazidis receive title deeds
    after decades of denial
The province of Nineveh has begun issuing title deeds to more than 15,000 Yazidis living in 11 settlements near Shingal (Sinjar), ending decades of official denial of their property rights
“The Yazidis suffered for more than 50 years to officially register their properties,” Ra’ad al-Hadidi, director of Nineveh municipalities, told Rudaw.

In 1975, as part of the Ba'ath regime’s Arabization campaign, thousands of Yazidis were forcibly displaced from their ancestral villages in the mountainous Shingal area and resettled in newly established collective towns on the plains. They were not, however, given official documentation of their ownership of these new homes
Murad Hassan was one of the first to receive the deed for his property.

“I am very happy that our homes have now been registered as our own property, and we can finally rebuild them,” he told Rudaw.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) welcomed the decision, describing it as a “breakthrough.”

“This achievement is a tangible and solid example of advancing durable solutions, restoring dignity, identity, and hope to a community that has endured unimaginable hardships,” Mohamed al-Hassan, the head of UNAMI, said in a statement
Applicants are required to pay a fee of 20,000 Iraqi dinars (around $15) per square meter to obtain a title deed - amounting to approximately $6,000 per household, according to UNAMI.

These fees are being waived for the Yazidis :ymapplause:

More than 90 Yazidi families
    returned to Shingal
More than 90 Yazidi families have returned to Shingal (Sinjar), their homeland in northern Iraq, the country’s migration ministry announced on Monday

The Spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement Ali Jahangir told Rudaw that 92 Yazidi families had returned to Shingal on Sunday, from Chamishko camp in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province.

In June 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) seized control of large swathes of territory in Iraq’s north and west. A little over a month later, in August, the group launched a wide-scale attack against the Yazidi community in Iraq's northern Shingal.

During the August 2014 assault, ISIS killed and abducted around 9,900 Yazidis. Recognizing the systematic targeting of the Yazidis as genocidal, the United Nations also reported that up to 200,000 Yazidis were displaced from Shingal, many of whom settled in camps across Dohuk
Jahangir told Rudaw on Monday that “at the beginning of 2024, there were 31,000 displaced [Shingal] Sinjar families in the Kurdistan Region’s camps; however, now 21,000 [Yazidi] families are still there.”

According to Jahangir, the migration ministry will provide returning Yazidi families with four million dinars (around $3,000) in financial assistance, as well as some essential household appliances to get by, including a refrigerator, stove, and television
Only $3,000 for their lose of lives, lands, homes and way of life X(

“Currently, only household appliances are being provided to the returning families, while the financial assistance will be distributed soon, following the approval of the [Iraqi] finance ministry,” he explained.

Though more than 10 years have passed since ISIS launched its attack on Shingal, much of the Yazidi community remains displaced. Their return has been hindered by a combination of security concerns, political disputes, and infrastructure and reconstruction challenges. The presence of various armed groups has also created an unstable environment, further deterring many Yazidis from returning.

Yazidis perform Karajal pilgrimage in Duhok

Yazidis in the Kurdistan’s Duhok province marched on a sacred pilgrimage on Wednesday. Called the Karajal pilgrimage, community members hike over a kilometer to a shrine atop a mountain in the Sharya area

People of different ages and genders perform traditional dances while trekking up the mountain.

Daristan Nasrat and her family came from Germany to participate.

"I came from Germany with my family. We came to the Karajal pilgrimage. God willing, may they perform this pilgrimage every year in happiness. This pilgrimage has been passed down to us by our ancestors, and our parents continue to perform this pilgrimage. We also want to do it every year in happiness like them," she told Rudaw.

On the return journey, each pilgrim brings a branch of a tree with them as a reward for completing the pilgrimage.

At the foot of the mountain, men bid farewell to the shrine by walking backwards and women face forward as they head toward the gathering place.

The Karajal pilgrimage takes place annually on the second Wednesday after Chwarshama Sur (Red Wednesday), the Yazidi New Year.

It is one of the 45 events observed by Yazidis.

Kurdistan National Prayer Breakfast
    attendees visit Lalish
Dozens of religious figures around the world, who had been invited for the event, visited Lalish Temple in Duhok province on Wednesday

Some of them had prior knowledge about Yazidis, while others had limited information.

Together they said prayers for good, and showed solidarity with the Yazidis.

“These are all academic and political personalities from within European parliaments and the world, within political parties, at the global level. It is necessary for the world to get to know us closely through these personalities and to understand what the living conditions and religious freedom in Kurdistan are like,” Karim Suleimani, a Yazidi figure, told Rudaw.

First International Scientific Conference on
    Yezidi Identity and Heritage
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Under the patronage of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the first international scientific conference dedicated to the Yezidi community will be held. The conference, focusing on the Yezidi religion, culture, history, and geography, is organized by the Lalish Center for Enlightenment and Social Affairs in partnership with the University of Duhok. It will run for two days, from April 29 to 30, 2025, at the University of Duhok’s Conference Center

This marks the first-ever international academic gathering of its kind centered on the Yezidi people. Tens of research papers will be presented by scholars from 11 different countries, with participation from academics based in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the world.

"Several researchers from universities in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and other countries will join the conference to discuss the religion, history, geography, and heritage of the Yezidi community," Saeed Jardo, head of the Lalish Center in Duhok, told Kurdistan24 on Tuesday
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has long demonstrated strong support for the Yezidis by having the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) provide monthly stipends to thousands of survivors rescued from ISIS captivity. Currently, 3,150 rescued Yezidi women receive regular financial assistance from the KRG.

Earlier this month, during the Yezidi New Year celebrations, Prime Minister Barzani reiterated his solidarity with the Yezidi people, reaffirming his commitment to their rights and demands. In his message, he also emphasized the ongoing efforts to normalize the situation in Sinjar, to enable displaced Yezidis to safely return to their ancestral homes.

The Yezidi Kurds, a religious minority primarily based in northern Iraq, particularly in Sinjar (Shangal) and the Kurdistan Region, have faced centuries of persecution. Their plight drew international attention following the 2014 ISIS attacks, during which thousands were killed, enslaved, or displaced. Since then, the KRG, under the leadership of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, has played a significant role in supporting Yezidi survivors, rebuilding efforts, and advocating for justice.

Hosting this first international scientific conference marks another important step toward preserving Yezidi heritage, amplifying academic research on their unique identity, and reinforcing efforts to restore dignity and recognition to a historically marginalized community.

Two Yezidi Youths Reunite With Families
    After Years In ISIS Captivity
Two Yezidi youths were reunited with their families on Sunday at the Rabia border crossing, more than a decade after they were abducted and held by Islamic State (ISIS) militants

Diyar Ali Raffo, born in 2003 in the village of Kocho, and Othman Khilo Khadida, born in 2007 in Wardiya, spent years in captivity, suffering severe injuries. Diyar lost an eye during his ordeal, while Othman lost his right hand following forced training and abuse by militants, according to Kurdistan 24.

The emotional reunions offered a rare moment of relief for the Yezidi community, which continues to search for thousands still missing since Islamic State’s 2014 attack on Sinjar.

As of March 2, 2025, about 3,000 Yezidis remain unaccounted for, according to the Office for the Rescue of Abducted Yezidis, a figure confirmed by UN-accredited sources.

Before the 2014 assault, Iraq’s Yezidi population was about 550,000. Today, roughly 135,860 Yezidis live in displacement camps across the Kurdistan Region, and another 189,337 have resettled elsewhere in the area, many still hoping for news about missing family members
While the return of Diyar and Othman offers a glimmer of hope, officials say much more needs to be done to locate the missing and support survivors recovering from years of captivity.

First International Scientific Conference
on Yezidi Identity and Heritage

In his message, he also emphasized the ongoing efforts to normalize the situation in Sinjar, to enable displaced Yezidis to safely return to their ancestral homes
