Shocking images of drowned Syrian boy show tragic plight of refugees

The full horror of the human tragedy unfolding on the shores of Europe was brought home on Wednesday as images of the lifeless body of a young boy – one of at least 12 Syrians who drowned attempting to reach the Greek island of Kos – encapsulated the extraordinary risks refugees are taking to reach the west.

The picture, taken on Wednesday morning, depicted the dark-haired toddler, wearing a bright-red T-shirt and shorts, washed up on a beach, lying face down in the surf not far from Turkey’s fashionable resort town of Bodrum.

Three-year-old Alan Kurdi, his five-year-old brother Galip and their mother, Rehan, died in desperate attempt to flee to relatives

A second image portrays a grim-faced policeman carrying the tiny body away. Within hours it had gone viral becoming the top trending picture on Twitter under the hashtag #KiyiyaVuranInsanlik (humanity washed ashore).

Turkish media identified the boy as three-year-old Alan Kurdi and reported that his five-year-old brother had also met a similar death. Both had reportedly hailed from the northern Syrian town of Kobani, the site of fierce fighting between Islamic state insurgents and Kurdish forces earlier this year.

Justin Forsyth, CEO of Save the Children, said: “This tragic image of a little boy who’s lost his life fleeing Syria is shocking and is a reminder of the dangers children and families are taking in search of a better life. This child’s plight should concentrate minds and force the EU to come together and agree to a plan to tackle the refugee crisis.”

Greek authorities, coping with what has become the biggest migration crisis in living memory, said the boy was among a group of refugees escaping Islamic State in Syria.

Migrant Offshore Aid Station says donations hit €150,000 in past 24 hours, after pictures of drowned three-year-old Syrian boy published worldwide

Turkish officials, corroborating the reports, said 12 people died after two boats carrying a total of 23 people, capsized after setting off separately from the Akyarlar area of the Bodrum peninsula. Among the dead were five children and a woman. Seven others were rescued and two reached the shore in lifejackets but hopes were fading of saving the two people still missing.

The casualties were among thousands of people, mostly Syrians, fleeing war and the brutal occupation by Islamic fundamentalists in their homeland.

Kos, facing Turkey’s Aegean coast, has become a magnet for people determined to reach Europe. An estimated 2,500 refugees, also believed to be from Syria, landed on Lesbos on Wednesday in what local officials described as more than 60 dinghies and other “unseaworthy” vessels.

Some 15,000 refugees are in Lesbos awaiting passage by cruise ship to Athens’ port of Piraeus before continuing their journey northwards to Macedonia and up through Serbia to Hungary and Germany.

Former foreign secretary says Britain should live up to historical responsibilities by taking in fair share of refugees

“The situation on the islands is dramatic in terms of the sheer numbers flowing in, lack of shelter and ever worsening hygiene conditions,” Ketty Kehayioy, the UNHCR’s spokeswoman in Athens told the Guardian. “The absence of staff to conduct registrations is creating enormous bottlenecks on Lesvos and Kos which is further exacerbating substandard conditions, conditions themselves worsened by very limited facilities.”

Local NGO’s and volunteers, working around-the-clock to support insufficient state services now stretched to breaking point, described the situation as “utterly overwhelming.”

Wednesday’s dead were part of a grim toll of some 2,500 people who have died this summer attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, according to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.

Athens’ caretaker government, in power until elections are held on 20 September, announced emergency measures to facilitate the flow after meeting in urgent session under the prime minister, Vassiliki Thanou.

Prime minister maintains hardline position despite pressure for UK to do more to help amid outcry over pictures of drowned refugee child in Turkey

The migration minister, Yiannis Mouzalas, said the measures would aim to improve conditions both for refugees and residents on islands such as Kos and Lesbos.

Conditions on islands have become increasingly chaotic with local officials voicing fears over the outbreak of disease amid rising levels of squalor.

“The problem is very big,” said Mouzalas, a doctor who is also a member of the Doctors of the World aid organisation. “If the European Union doesn’t intervene quickly to absorb the populations … if the issue isn’t internationalised on a UN level, every so often we will be discussing how to avoid the crisis,” he told reporters, insisting that the thousands risking their lives to flee conflict were refugees. “There is no migration issue, remove that – it is a refugee issue,” he said.

The UNHCR calculates that some 205,000 Europe-bound refugees have entered Greece, mostly via its outlying Aegean isles, this year alone. The vast majority (69%) are Syrians, Afghans (18 %), Iraqis and Somalis fleeing conflict in their countries.

In Hungary’s capital, meanwhile, where the authorities reversed their position and moved to stop migrants travelling to Germany and other western EU countries, hundreds continued to protest at Keleti station. Tensions rose throughout the day as the number of mainly young men swelled to over 2,000.

Berlin has proposed a quota system, thousands of Germans have volunteered to help refugees, and press coverage has been more balanced – but there have also been more violent incidents in Germany

With police blocking their path into Budapest’s main international train station, the crowds chanted, “No police! No police!” and “Germany! Germany!”

Passions also flared on Hungary’s border with Serbia as rightwing nationalist protesters marched to the location where migrants use a train track to walk into the country. Police formed protective circles around frightened migrants as the demonstrators screamed abuse at them.

“We have to reinstate law and order at the borders of the European Union, including the border with Serbia,” Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said. “Without re-establishing law and order, it will be impossible to handle the influx of migrants.”

He said Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, would take a “clear and obvious message” to a meeting in Brussels on Thursday with EU chiefs about the migration crisis.

Re: Kobane and what everyone ignores

ISIS moved slowly towards Kobane, destroying small villages and towns along the way

Everyone saw ISIS moving towards Kobane nobody stopped them

As ISIS came slowly closer to Kobane and the Syrian/Turkish border, Turkey had plenty of time to post plenty of tanks and other armament along the border

We all thought that Turkey, being a member of NATO, would take action to prevent ISIS reaching the city

Everyone saw ISIS moving towards Kobane nobody stopped them

We watched the events on TV as they slowly unfold before us

Everyone saw ISIS moving towards Kobane nobody stopped them

We could not believe that the Turkish troops were taking no action

Those in Kobane were also relaxed as they expect Turkey to take some form of action

Everyone saw ISIS moving towards Kobane nobody stopped them

When it became obvious that nobody was going to help, the poor people of Kobane grabbed everything they could, filling cars and carrying what they could on their shoulders

Everyone saw ISIS moving towards Kobane nobody stopped them

When the people of Kobane reached the Turkish/Syria border, Turkey - full of kindness and joy, refused to allow the people to take their cars and most of their belongings across the border into Turkey

Everyone saw ISIS moving towards Kobane nobody stopped them

It did not take very long for ISIS to move into Kobane and then onto the border where they took the cars and precious items the Kobane population had been forced to leave on the Syrian side of the border

Everyone saw ISIS move into Kobane nobody stopped them

Several times the people of Kobane attempted to return to Kobane to help to save their homes, but the Turkish military prevented them

Everyone saw ISIS move into Kobane nobody stopped them

Everyone knows all about the fighting that took place inside Kobane but are you all aware that, even with all the growing publicity, nobody prevented ISIS from moving yet more troops and weapons into Kobane

Everyone saw ISIS moving more troops into Kobane but nobody stopped them

As the situation became worse, those on the Turkish side of the border were loath to move away. They sat watching their homes being burnt and bombed to the ground

Everyone saw ISIS move reinforcements into Kobane nobody stopped them

The Kurds were forced to seek shelter anywhere they could

Eventually Peshmerga and PKK forces moved in and the coalition bombed the heart out of Kobane

The destruction was caused by:

a) failure to prevent ISIS entering Kobane

b) failure to prevent ISIS from receiving many deliveries of
    supplies
    weapons
    extra troops

c) a ridiculously absurd amount of bombing by coalition

The coalition has always had money to spend on destruction but never on rebuilding

After all the horrors of Kobane, the former inhabitants faced even more horrors

The treatment these unfortunate displaced people faced at the hands of the Turks was something from nightmares

Many Kurds left half-starved with nothing but the clothes they stood up in, physically abused by Turks

Some Kurds took shelter in the refugee camps but the camps were far to violent and the poor people of Kobane

Even one-time wealthy professionals, ended up squatting in half-built buildings and long deserted shacks, some putting up make-shift tents under trees

With Turks attacking the Kurds and chasing them away every time they found shelter, the Kurds were yet again in fear of their lives

Out of desperation, many Kurds decided to risk their lives making the dangerous crossing from Turkey to Europe

The young boy in the picture, along with family and friends died escaping from TURKS

They did NOT die escaping from ISIS

Traders in human lives:
smugglers imprisoned

The father of Alan Kurdi, a 3-year-old Kobane child who died while crossing the Aegean sea in 2015, has expressed mixed emotions at the sentencing of 3 individuals to 125 years each in prison for their involvement in the tragedy

Abdullah Kurdi, his wife Rehanna, and their two sons, Alan, 3, and Ghalib, 4, were trying to cross the sea to Greece on September 2, 2015 when their smuggler’s boat sank off the Turkish coast.

A photograph of Alan lying face down in the surf on a Turkish beach caused shock and revulsion worldwide, and led to calls for European leaders to offer refugees safe and legal passage.

Three suspects were captured in Adana province southern Turkey this week, according to state-owned Anadolu Agency.

The suspects were convicted for “killing with eventual intent” by a court in Bodrum on Friday.

Two Syrian smugglers were jailed in 2016 over the tragedy, but three others had fled during the trial, according to AA.

Alan’s father told Rudaw English on Friday that he is mostly happy with the verdict- punishing those who are “trading with human lives.”

“The decision of sentencing the three individuals to 125 years made me happy and not happy at the same time, but made me happy in general as those who are trading with human lives have been detained and punished, and I hope all the other smugglers will be detained soon,” Kurdi said.

Kurdi revealed that he knows one of the suspects and is "sure" that he is guilty.

Alan Kurdi drowned off the Turkish coast in 2016

He also announced that he is eagerly awaiting the birth of a new son, who will also be named Alan.

“I will have another Alan in 10 days, and that makes me have hope again,” Kurdi said.

A German charity named a rescue ship in memory of Alan Kurdi to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.

Sea-Watch's Alan Kurdi ship has rescued many migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean and enter Europe.

Kurdi is currently trying to relocate the ship from the Mediterranean Sea to Aegean sea, the primary route for refugees and migrants crossing from Turkey to Greece.

“I’m planning to relocate Alan’s ship, which rescues migrants from the Libyan coast, to the Aegean Sea to rescue the refugees,” he said.

He is also planning to have another rescue ship in the Aegean Sea named Galib, the other son he lost in the tragedy.

Protests over new Kobanê massacre

The protests against the massacre of three women in the village of Helîncê (Halinja) near Kobanê are becoming increasingly widespread. After three women, Zehra Berkel from the coordination of the women's movement Kongreya Star for the Euphrates region, Hebûn Mele Xelîl from the Kongreya Star Board in Kobanê and her host Amina Waysî were killed by a targeted Turkish drone attack on Tuesday, anger and outrage are spreading. Women's organisations and Kurdish umbrella organisations are calling for protests at 6 pm.

KCDK-E: The international forces are jointly responsible

The Kurdish European umbrella organisation KCDK-E says: "The Turkish state is doing everything to destroy any achievement of the Kurds. The dictator Erdoğan continues his massacres of children, women and old people. This state, which mutilates the corpses of the dead and devastates cemeteries, which plunders and destroys Kurdistan's nature, has committed a new massacre of women in Kobanê. The fascist Turkish state is attacking the Kurdish women as if it wants to take revenge for its ISIS criminals. It obviously wants to implement itself what the ISIS has not managed to do. The international forces which applauded the Kurds for their victory over the ISIS are partly responsible. Their silence means complicity".

TJA: The murderer is known - we will not let him rest!

The Free Women's Movement TJA, which is organised in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan, says: "Once again, three women have been made into a target and killed. Sakine, Leyla, Rojbîn, Hevrîn, Sêvê, Fatme, Pakize, Gulistan, Melek, Zehra, Hebûn, Emine are only some of them. The fascist regime is committed to the murder of Kurdish women. We appeal to the international community! The murderers are known. Our struggle will continue until the murderers are held accountable in international courts!"

DBP: Kurdish women will answer the massacre with resistance

The HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) member party DBP (Democratic Regions Party) also issued a statement on the massacre and said: "This government is a sworn enemy of KurKCDK-E: The international forces are jointly responsibledish women and is trying to stifle the women-led revolution in Rojava. This is the reason why Kurdish women are being attacked. They have stopped the ISIS, which had terrified the world, on the way of establishing its fascist dictatorship and started a revolution in the whole Middle East. The best answer to this regime is the revolutionary women's resistance."

TJK-E: Our struggle for women will smash fascism

The Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe (TJK-E) called on everyone, and women in particular, to organise protest actions this evening (Wednesday). “We call on all democrats, especially women and women organizations to organise against the massacre mentality of the Turkish state which targets the Rojava women's revolution. We are calling on Kurds and Kurdish friends to organise protests at 6 pm this evening. Our struggle for women will smash fascism.” TJK-E said that the targeting of women in Kobanê is the expression of how much the Turkish state is afraid of women.

WDR: Defend life against fascism

Women Defend Rojava called on all women in the world to stand up against the war crimes committed by the Turkish state, to denounce the responsibility of Russia, as they are controlling the fly zone over Kobanê, all NATO member states and all organisations, such as the United Nations, which turn a blind eye to the human rights violations committed throughout Kurdistan.

Women Defend Rojava also reiterated its call on all women to defend Rojava and Kurdistan against fascism, and to organize actions, demonstrations or rallies; "We call on them to inform on the atrocities of the Turkish state and to put pressure on those responsible. We call for taking our role as women and defending life against fascism. Let us organise our self-defense together as women worldwide! We have to end this patriarchal mentality!”

Kongra Star: Turkey targets the organization of women

Kongra Star Coordination member Remziye Mihemed said: "Turkey is targeted the organization of women. Those who sow the seeds of women's struggle in Northern Kurdistan, or in Rojava like Zehra were always the target of the Turkish state. They want to destroy the Kurdish people by destroying women. We condemn the attitude of Russia, which is silent on these attacks. The Turkish state is attacking in a region where Russian forces are deployed and Russia does not know about it. Such a thing is not possible.”
