Constant Turkish bombardment

The Turkish army bombed the vicinity of two villages in Duhok province’s Amedi town on Monday, damaging orchards and farms. A villager said the constant bombardment by Ankara has deprived them of a normal life

Majid Barchi is from Barchi village. He told Rudaw’s Haydar Doski that a bomb hit only 300 kilometers away from their village on Monday, sparking fear and panic among restless residents wishing for a return to normalcy.

“We are really in a terrible condition. The bombardment takes place every day. We live in fear as we cannot go out or visit farms,” he said.

Many trees in the area were also damaged due to the bombardment.

As the Rudaw team made preparations for a trip to Belav village, another bomb hit a nearby village. Ankara struck the area with at least 13 bombs only on Monday, villagers said.

Amjad Belavi from Belav village said he fears for his life when leaving his house due to the bombardment.

“My farm is only 20 meters away from my house but I hesitantly visit it,” he said, calling on local authorities to help them have a normal life “otherwise the village will be abandoned.”

Turkey’s armed clashes with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have turned hundreds of villages in the Kurdistan Region’s border areas into war zones. A large number of them have been evacuated due to constant bombardment.

The PKK is an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey but it is listed as a terrorist group by Ankara.

Turkey has recently upped its attacks against the PKK in the Kurdistan Region. It has also intensified its targeting of Kurdish fighters in northern Syria due to their alleged ties with the PKK.

The PKK announced a unilateral ceasefire in February due to devastating quakes in Turkey and later extended it to include the Turkish elections period. The group ended the truce earlier this month.

PKK kills two Turkish soldiers

Two Turkish soldiers were killed during clashes with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced late Sunday

The soldiers were killed on Saturday in the “Operation Claw-Lightning” area, which encompasses the regions of Metina, Avashin, Zap, and Basyan in the Kurdistan Region’s northern Duhok province. They were identified as Hasan Tas and Furkan Gunergok.

The PKK has not commented on the incidents.

Ankara has in the past few years intensified its campaign to eliminate the presence of PKK fighters around its borders, launching several operations in the Kurdistan Region as well as Syria where it claims to target alleged proxies of the group.

In 2019, Turkey launched Operation Claw against the PKK in Khakurk. This was followed by Operation Claw-Tiger in June 2020. The third edition of the offensive was a ground and air cross-border operation, dubbed Operation Claw-Lightning and Operation Claw-Thunderbolt, launched in April 2021. All of these operations focused on the PKK’s positions in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province.

Turkey sent its army back into the Kurdistan Region in April of last year, launching Operation Claw-Lock with the goal of targeting PKK positions in Metina, Zap, Avashin, and Basyan areas in northern Duhok province. The operation, according to Ankara, aims to remove the PKK from the bordering areas and cut off its access to mainland Turkey.

Another operation dubbed Claw-Sword was launched in November, which was an aerial campaign targeting PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region and its alleged proxies in northern Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the time that the operation was a prelude to a ground offensive.

The PKK is a Kurdish group that has waged an armed insurgency against Turkey for decades and is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara.

Turkeye bombs Mount Metina

Turkish airstrikes have caused a massive fire on the slopes of Mount Metina in Duhok province’s Amedi district, near the Turkish border. The fire has been ongoing over the past two days

Tens of acres of land between the villages of Barchi, Goharze, Balava, Deraluk, and the town of Amedi, have caught fire.

“When I woke up in the morning, I heard a voice. I looked at the mountain because every day there are planes overhead and artillery shells in the mountains, but I saw no smoke in the sky, so my brother went downstairs and saw smoke rising,” Najib Nheli, a veteran Peshmerga fighter from Amedi, told Rudaw’s Naif Ramadhan.

"The bombing continues and when they bombard, fires will be everywhere, and authorities do not allow people to go because it is dangerous in all directions,” he added.

Amedi's civil defense teams were not able to reach the scene of the fire due to fears of possible repeated bombardments.

Locals and villagers attempted to take matters into their own hands to put out the giant blaze that dealt a huge blow to their farmlands, but they were unsuccessful due to the lack of equipment to extinguish the fire.

“We went to control the fire but it was very difficult to get it out of control again because it is a mountainous area full of trees and plants,” said Fayaq Balavai, a resident.

The fire burnt hundreds of trees in the area which are between 5-100 years old.

Turkish forces frequently carry out military assaults in the Kurdistan Region, targeting suspected Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in the mountains where the group has its headquarters.

The PKK is an armed group that for decades has fought for greater Kurdish political and cultural rights in Turkey. Ankara has designated it a terror organization.

Amedi district's outlying mountainous regions saw similar bombings in early June by Turkey.

Civilians are frequently caught in the crossfire. Dozens have been killed and hundreds of villages have been emptied.

Shepherds forced out of mountains

Turkish artillery shells and drone strikes have forced sheep owner Ahmed Saadulla and many others like him to move their sheep away from the mountains of Amedi district in Duhok province, in search of pasture for their livestock

As a result of Turkey’s bombing campaigns, tens of acres of land between the villages of Barchi, Goharze, and Balava have burned. An airstrike caused a massive fire on the slopes of Mount Metina in Amedi district, near the Turkish border earlier this week. The flames raged for two days before they were extinguished
Saadulla is from Goharze village. He says that it has become difficult to raise his flock of 150 sheep due to the lack of greenspace far from the slopes of the mountains. He is thinking of selling them and looking for some other work to make a living for his family.

"The entire region has caught fire. What should I do with my sheep now? I am forced to sell them. I cannot afford to raise my sheep on fodder until next year, or next spring. If I do so, I have to spend all I have on buying fodder for them," Saadulla lamented.

The fresh Turkish bombings have left more than 1,000 sheep without pasture. Shepherds have no idea where to take their sheep to feed them.

Apart from making Kurdish villages targets for Turkish bombs WHAT is the PKK actually doing in Kurdistan !?!

If the PKK were inside Northern Kurdistan, Turkey would have no reason to bomb South Kurdistan

The PKK should be holding protests in Northern Kurdistan with a view to becoming an Independent Northern Kurdistan

Turkey, PKK clashes intensify

Clashes between the Turkish army and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have intensified over the past two days in the northern mountains of the Kurdistan Region, with each side on Saturday claiming to have inflicted casualties on the other

The Turkish defense ministry said its forces have “neutralized” five PKK members on Mount Metina in northern Duhok province. Ankara uses the term neutralized to denote adversaries captured, wounded, or killed. State media also reported that Turkish intelligence killed a PKK member named Ozgur Alparslan in an operation on Duhok’s Mount Gara. The report said Alparslan was a PKK leader responsible for Turkey.

On the same day, the People’s Defense Forces (HPG), the military arm of the PKK, announced in a statement that they have killed 16 Turkish soldiers over the past three days in the Metina area. It also said a Sikorsky helicopter belonging to the Turkish army was damaged in clashes.

In a separate report, the Turkish defense ministry announced that a Turkish soldier was hit by a helicopter blade and killed on Friday.

The PKK is an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara. The Turkish state has been at war with the armed group for several decades. The conflict regularly spills over into the Kurdistan Region where the PKK has its headquarters in the Qandil Mountains. Last week Turkish strikes caused a massive fire on the slopes of Mount Metina in Duhok’s Amedi district. The flames raged for two days before they were extinguished, burning tens of acres of land between the villages in the area.

Turkish intelligence is accused of carrying out assassinations of the group’s members in the Region. Earlier this month, Turkish intelligence announced that it had carried out an operation in Sulaimani province where they killed a member of the group accused of plotting the assassination of a Turkish diplomat in 2019.

Duhok locals return to homes

Locals of a village in Zakho’s Batifa town returned to their homes this week after evacuating and settling elsewhere four years ago because of constant heavy Turkish bombardment

Turkey has carried out numerous operations in the area, claiming to be targeting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The fighting has forced many locals of villages near the Kurdistan Region’s border with Turkey to leave their homes out of safety concerns.

Upon return, many residents found their houses and belongings had been destroyed. They claim that the village still remains unsafe, and can only be approached from a distance of at least eight kilometers.

“At first, when the Turkish soldiers came, all the villagers left the village and we said we would return in a few days, then we were banned from entering the village until six or seven days ago,” Islam Sadiq, a resident, told Rudaw’s Ayub Nasri on Sunday.

Akram Aziz, another resident, told Rudaw that “A road has been built through the village and destroyed all the land of the farmers. The road was built by the Turkish army to reach a military checkpoint and destroyed the fields of some farmers.”

Thirteen villages have been evacuated in Batifa town due to the fighting between Turkey and the PKK.

Farhad Mahmood, the governor of Batifa town, told Rudaw that the situation in the town is calm and no incidents have taken place recently.

The PKK is a Kurdish armed group fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and designated a terrorist organization by Ankara. Turkish forces regularly pursue the PKK, as well as individuals believed to be affiliated with the group through the use of drones, airstrikes, and targeted assassinations within the Kurdistan Region’s borders where the group has its headquarters.

Turkish soldiers beat Kurdish villagers

Villagers have accused Turkish border guards of beating up and arresting four young Kurdish men in Turkey’s southeast province of Hakkari (Colemerg) on Tuesday

Cebar Tas from Navberojan (Yesilova) town told Rudaw English that four villagers, aged 16 to 20, had taken their livestock to the outskirts of their village, to an area where they often graze their animals near the Kurdistan Region border. While there, a group of soldiers approached them and began beating them for unknown reasons.

“Hearing their cries, the villagers rushed to their aid and rescued them. After realising that their act was being filmed, the soldiers stopped beating them,” Tas, who is a cousin of the four victims, told Rudaw English.

Footage submitted to Rudaw English appears to show six soldiers standing over a number of people who are lying on the ground. When the soldiers realise they are being filmed, they gesture at the person holding the camera to stop.

The villagers were able to rescue the four men and took them to a medical center to be examined by a health professional, but the soldiers returned and arrested all four. They are currently being held at a local military post, according to Tas, whose son was briefly arrested in 2021 on the charge of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a video on social media.

Turkish authorities have not commented on the incident. Rudaw English reached out to the governor’s office for comment.

An eyewitness spoke to Rudaw English on the condition of anonymity. He said that the incident took place at dawn.

“When their cousins tried to rescue them, the soldiers shot near their feet and used tear gas to disperse them,” he said.

This is the second time in a week that soldiers have arrested people from the village. Three days earlier, three other villagers were beaten and arrested by soldiers, again for unknown reasons, according to the eyewitness.

“This is not a prohibited area but only 100 metres away from the village,” said the eyewitness.

When Turkish forces carry out operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), they routinely impose curfews and prohibit people from entering certain zones. There are currently no known military operations ongoing in the area near the village.

In footage seen by Rudaw English, one of the villagers has a bleeding wound in his side. And a photo submitted shows an image of jailed Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas on a phone case. His face in the image has been scratched out.

Turkish security forces have a history of harassing and abusing Kurds, often with impunity as reported earlier this year by Al Monitor.

In 2020, Turkish soldiers allegedly tortured two Kurdish men, Osman Siban and Servet Turgut, in Van province and threw them out of a helicopter. Turgut died of his injuries and Siban was accused of being a member of a terrorist organisation. Human Rights Watch in its 2022 report said that no progress was made in their case.

“There was little evidence to suggest prosecutors made progress in investigating the rising allegations of torture and ill-treatment in police custody and prison reported over the past five years. Few such allegations result in prosecution of the security forces, and a pervasive culture of impunity persists,” added the damning report, highlighting the impunity that Turkish police operate with.

Rare oak tree in Kurdistan

SORAN, Erbil - Environmental activists are concerned about the fate of a rare oak tree in Hassan Beg mountain in Soran, Erbil province, warning it faces extinction. They have installed fences to save the seeds, and have put up warning signs

Quercus macranthera, commonly known as the Caucasian oak, is among the trees facing extinction around the area. Very few of these trees remain on the mountain.

Last fall, Rudaw broadcast a programme highlighting the existential threats the trees face, prompting the Kurdistan Botanical Foundation (KBF) to begin protecting them.

“There are some specific duties we have to do and the first thing is to isolate certain trees so we can save the seeds, we will also put warning signs on the trees to tell the local people that this species is rare,” Saman Abdulrahman, Director of Kurdistan Botanical Foundation, told Rudaw’s Andam Jabbar on Tuesday.

There are five species of oak trees in the region, which account for 90 percent of the forests.

Along with the fence, warning signs were hung on the trees while the government is also taking responsibility for protecting them from being cut down.

“We will fully monitor and protect the trees, especially through the environmental police, and from today onwards we will have numerous teams to protect the trees because these are national assets that must be protected,” Sidakan's mayor Ihsan Chalabi said.

In addition to climate change, man-made threats are another factor endangering these trees. Locals and officials in many other parts of the Kurdistan Region, including Erbil province, have warned that the cutting down of trees, mainly old oak trees, is becoming a dangerous phenomenon, especially in the mountainous regions.

Green spaces in the Kurdistan Region are also severely damaged due to sporadic armed clashes and aerial bombardments of Turkey

Turkey targets vehicle in Sulaimani

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A Turkish drone targeted a vehicle in the Sharbazher area of Sulaimani Province, Shaho Osman, the governor of Sharbazher, confirmed to Kurdistan 24

The drone strike damages are still unknown, the governor added.

Osman also revealed that a fire broke out in the area, and civil defense and security forces rushed to the scene.

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) announced in a statement that four Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters were killed in the strike and one fighter was wounded.

The strike took place at 8 p.m. on Friday in the village of Rangena in the sub-district of Chwarta, according to CTD.

Also, the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (a.k.a. MIT) announced on Friday the killing of Masoud Jalal Osman, known as Zagros Chakdar, the head of the PKK in Sinjar.

Previously on July 17, a military drone bearing Turkish flags on its wings was found crashed in a rural area of Sulaimani Province. Turkish defense officials have not commented on the incident thus far.

Moreover, on Oct. 4, 2022, the CTD announced that a Turkish drone targeted a vehicle of PKK fighters in the Zalani sub-district of Sharbazher, killing two PKK fighters and wounding another.

Bolstered by its advanced drone industry, Turkey has recently ramped up its aerial attacks on the alleged PKK targets in urban sites in the Kurdistan Region, where a number of the group’s militants have so far been assassinated.

Drone killed PKK commander

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A Turkish drone strike killed a Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) commander and wounded another militant in the Kurdistan Region’s Chamchamal district on early Sunday, the Kurdistan Region's Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said

The drone targeted a vehicle carrying the PKK militants in a village near Aghjalar subdistrict at 9:30 am (local time), the CTD said in a statement.

As a result of the attack, a PKK commander was killed and another militant wounded, the press release added, without elaborating further on the identities of those killed.

Turkey last year targeted another vehicle carrying alleged PKK militants in the area, killing all five passengers.

The PKK and Ankara have been engaged in a bloody military conflict since the mid-1980s, resulting in the deaths of about 55,000 people.

Bolstered by its advanced drone industry, Turkey has ramped up its drone strikes in recent years, particularly in the urban centers of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, to target suspected PKK positions.

Similar strikes in the past have also been blamed on Turkey, which have resulted in casualties, including senior PKK militants.

Kurdistan Region officials regularly call on Baghdad, officially in charge of border security affairs, to prevent the insurgents and foreign militaries from engaging in hostilities within its territory. Officials have voiced concerns about increased militia forces presence in the area.

Much of the conflict has been fought in the border areas of the Kurdistan Region, which has endangered the civilian population

Civilian killed in Duhok airstrike

A suspected Turkish airstrike targeted a civilian car in Duhok’s Chamanke district on Sunday, killing one of the civilians onboard and wounding another

The strike occurred at around 5:00pm, killing Alan Ismael, 24, and wounding Hashim Shakir, 49, according to Rudaw’s reporter on the ground.

The two men were visiting a family farmhouse near the area when the strike happened, according to Ibrahim Mohammed, Ismael’s uncle.

“We are constantly bombarded and no one asks why. The government does not even tell us that this is a restricted area and that we should not visit it. A lot of people go there for picnics, tending to their properties, or just visiting their home village,” Mohammed told Rudaw’s Hunar Rashid.

Mohammed said that the constant bombardment has worried the residents of the area, and called on relevant authorities to find a solution for the issue.

Media affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) blamed Turkey for the attack, and claimed that Shakir was in critical condition.

Clashes between the Turkish army and the PKK have intensified over the past few weeks in the northern mountains of the Kurdistan Region. Chamanke is located 15 kilometres from Mount Gara, known for frequent clashes between Turkey and the PKK.

There was a time that Kurds were fighting for an Independent Kurdistan, and as such gained a lot of International Support from famous people. Kurds were known as the largest nation in the world without a country of their own

Now many Kurdish leaders, particularly those in the PKK and HDP, have betrayed all those who died fighting for freedom. Their leaders are suppressing the Kurdish population by telling them to fight for a few more rights but NOT freedom

The once proud Kurds of Western Kurdistan, have been told that they must no longer fight for freedom

There are so many millions of Kurds that they have no need to fight, the Kurdish voice can be loud enough to be heard worldwide

PKK kills 3 Turkish soldiers

Turkish defence ministry on Wednesday announced that three of its soldiers were killed and two others were injured by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region

The ministry said in a statement that the PKK opened fire on Turkish soldiers in Duhok province, killing two and injuring three others. One of the injured succumbed to his wounds. One of the dead is a commander.

Wednesday’s incident took place in the Operation Claw-Lock region, according to the Turkish defence ministry.

Two drone attacks in Sulaimani province killed and injured several people on Wednesday. The PKK media blamed Ankara but local officials said the drone was unidentified.

Turkish bombs worry residents

Turkish warplanes have heavily targeted alleged positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Duhok’s Amedi district over the past week, spreading worry and concern among residents who have been subjected to great psychological and material damage

The bombardments have caused a fire in the forests of Mount Gara, burning hundreds of dunams of land. Ibrahim Hassan, a farmer from a nearby village, claims to have lost 10 dunams of farmland due to the ongoing Turkey-PKK clashes in recent years.

“We do not dare visit our old village. It is as cool and beautiful as a resort,” Hassan told Rudaw’s Naif Ramadhan, “Now we cannot even go to visit.”

Security sources from Amedi claim that at least two TNT explosions have occurred near the district over the past week, in addition to two artillery shells landing in Guharz village including one inside the home of a civilian.

“I thought it was a bomb at first. I knew it did not directly hit the house. It created a fog. Once the dust and fog were cleared, I knew it was a shell. This is very dangerous, you never know when one might hit you on the head,” said Abdulwahab Ibrahim, a villager.

In April last year, Turkey launched Operation Claw-Lock with the goal of targeting PKK positions in Metina, Zap, Avashin, and Basyan areas in northern Duhok province. The operation, according to Ankara, aims to remove the PKK from the bordering areas and cut off its access to mainland Turkey.

“We made all those sacrifices so that one day we can live in peace, not for you to come now and claim to liberate the area. The area is already thriving. Why don’t you allow our villages to be prosperous? Why don’t you allow services to reach our villages,” decried Duhok Governor Ali Tatar.

Ankara has in the past few years intensified its campaign to eliminate the presence of PKK fighters around its borders, launching several operations in the Kurdistan Region as well as Syria where it claims to target alleged proxies of the group.

Material Damage in Duhok

At least two shells landed in Amedi district of Duhok province, causing material damage to civilian properties, a report said

The incident took place in Guharze village, in Dereluk, Kurdistan 24 reported, noting that the precise origin of the shells has so far remained unknown, with investigations underway to determine the source of the projectiles.

Similar events have taken place in Guharze in the past. On August 13, 2023, another projectile landed approximately 100 meters from local shops and residential buildings, causing only material damage to the area.

These repeated shelling incidents have instilled fear and anxiety among the villagers, posing a significant threat to their lives and property.

The presence of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters in border areas of the Kurdistan Region adjacent to Turkey has heightened tensions in the Region. In response, the Turkish army has periodically conducted bombardments in these areas, resulting in substantial damage to agricultural and tourist areas.
