Kurdistan condemns attacks

There have been more than 400 military incursions into the Kurdistan Region so far this year, endangering innocent civilians, a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) official stated

“Ever since the border clashes and bombardments commenced, civilian impacts culminated in mass displacement, colossal proprietary damages, and the victimization of innocent civilians,” read a statement from Dindar Zebari, KRG’s coordinator for international advocacy.

“Between January and August 2021, there were 165 airstrikes, 274 artillery shells, 6 boots-on-the-ground [operations],” in Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaimani provinces, he added. The statement does not name any nation or group.

Neighboring countries frequently target Kurdish groups who have bases in the Kurdistan Region. This year, both Iran and Turkey have conducted large-scale offensives.

In April, Turkey launched two operations, Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt, in northern Duhok. The operations are ongoing, targeting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed group fighting for greater rights for Kurds in Turkey. Several civilians have been killed. One Duhok family is suffering ill health from a suspected chemical weapon attack. Turkey is also accused of deforestation.

For several days in September, Iran attacked suspected positions of Kurdish opposition parties in Sulaimani and Erbil provinces. Locals affected by the bombing said they were terrified.

“These attacks endanger the lives of Kurdistan citizens, destroy their properties, annihilate the villagers’ agrarian lands, impairs civilian infrastructure and damages the forests,” said Zebari, who noted that there has been no effort to compensate the people living on the frontlines of these offensives.

“Neither national nor international counterparts made an initiative to produce an equitable outcome to compensate civilians who have had their houses demolished, their farming lands destroyed and their lives endangered,” he said.

According to Zebari, because of the clashes “more than 800 villages remain without inhabitation, reconstruction, and services.”

A year ago, a parliamentary report found that 504 villages have been completely emptied due to Turkish and Iranian attacks since 1992.

“KRG has requested the armed elements to discontinue their provocations against the neighboring states from the KRG territories. Also, it calls upon neighboring countries to consider that civilians inhabit the border areas, which are currently exposed to bombardments; hence they are forced to flee their homes and abandon their properties,” Zebari said.

Turkish bombardment of Duhok

A civilian was injured on Friday morning in a suspected Turkish bombardment in northern Duhok, which sees frequent intense clashes between Turkish forces and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)

“A civilian named Sabit Hussein, 55, was injured and he is in critical condition now,” Kani Masi mayor Sarbast Sabri told Rudaw.

Hussein was injured in Hirore village and has been transferred to a health center in Begova for treatment.

Turkish forces targeted Hirore village from positions in Kani Masi, according to Sabri.

In April, Turkey launched the twin operations Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt in northern Duhok against the PKK, an armed group fighting for greater rights for Kurds in Turkey. Ankara considers it a terrorist organization.

There have been more than 400 military incursions into the Kurdistan Region so far this year, endangering innocent civilians, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) coordinator for international advocacy Dindar Zebari said in a statement on Wednesday, without naming any nation or group. Zebari listed villages, including Hirore, that have been subject to attacks by Turkish and Iranian forces, pursuing Kurdish opposition groups.

Civilian populations and the environment have been severely damaged by the Turkey-PKK conflict. Thousands of acres of land have been scorched, and people’s houses and livestock have been hit. Several civilians have been killed and one family in Hirore is suffering from health problems following a suspected chemical attack.

The KRG has repeatedly called on Turkey to respect its sovereignty and for the PKK to cease using Kurdistan Region territory to launch attacks on its neighbor.

Turkey-PKK over 200 villages empty

Decades-long conflict between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has left 212 villages across Erbil province abandoned, an official told Rudaw on Thursday amid Ankara’s latest operation against the group in the Kurdistan Region.

Frequent Turkish operations in the Region seeking to rid its southern border of PKK fighters, allegedly using the area as a staging ground for attacks on Ankara's soil, have brought significant discomfort to villagers with many leaving their homes due to the conflict between the two.

"The villages have become the site of many conflicts, and the ongoing conflicts have caused a lot of problems for us as an administration," Halgurd Sheikh Najib, head of Soran independent administration, told Rudaw's Bakhtiyar Qadir.

Bradost, an area frequently bombed by Turkey, recorded the highest number of empty villages where 118 villages were abandoned in the past 30 years, Najib said.

Najib stressed that returning villagers cause his administration significant concern, saying that they "cannot ensure their safety" and "many unfortunate incidents have happened where they have fallen victim to Turkish bombardments and PKK landmines."

Apart from Turkey-PKK clashes, Iranian warplanes often target Bradost area. On Wednesday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a mountainous area in Sidakan, inflicting no civilian or material damage.

Dozens of other villages have also been abandoned in Barzan, Choman, and Rawanduz.

Sixty five Barzan villages are uninhabited, 24 in Choman’s Balakayati area and five in Rawanduz, according to Najib.

Last month, Turkey announced a fresh phase in a series of anti-PKK operations, an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. The operation, dubbed Claw-Lock, is an air and ground assault that heavily focuses on mountainous border areas where the PKK maintains a presence.

The recent incursion has been widely condemned by Iraqi officials, labeling it as a "hostile" and "provocative" violation of the country's sovereignty.

Turkey has come under criticism from Baghdad, Erbil, and the wider international community for violating Iraqi sovereignty, but Ankara continues to establish increasing numbers of bases and outposts in the mountains of Erbil and Duhok provinces. Turkey says that it is in the mountains of the Region to cut off the path of PKK militants and to prevent them from crossing into the Kurdish areas in the southeast of the country and attacking the security forces.

A parliamentary report published in 2020 said the conflict has left a staggering 504 villages empty across the Kurdistan Region.

Two children were killed in Duhok

Two children were killed in Duhok province’s Zewa village on Thursday during clashes between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Turkish army

Birqi Omar, mukhtar (chieftain) of Zewa village in Amedi town, told Rudaw’s Hunar Rashid that people from nearby areas picnicked in the village but were targeted with bombs.

“As far as we know, the PKK on Metina mountain targeted Turkish military base with three bombs. Then, Turkey bombed our families, killing two people, aged 10, and injuring another,” said the official.

A witness, whose hand was stained with the blood of one of the dead children, told Rudaw that they had left all their picnic goods in the incident area.

Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) later said that two people were killed and two others injured in the incident, blaming the PKK.

Warshin Salman, mayor of Amedi, told Rudaw late Thursday that the children were killed by the PKK.

The PKK-affiliated Rojnews also reported the incident, claiming that the two children were killed by the Turkish army.

Neither Turkey nor the PKK have commented on the deadly attack.

Turkey regularly bombard the PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region. It launched a fresh offensive against the group in Duhok province in April.

Remzi Kartal, a Kurdish leader who I respect and admire. One of the few Kurds who actually, genuinely cares about the plight of the Kurdish population

Remzi Kartal has dedicate his entire life to helping fellow Kurds, whereas most Kurdish leaders are more interested in their own self-gratification and position of power

Image

‘Everyone should stand against Turkey

KONGRA-GEL Co-Chair Remzi Kartal spoke about the Turkish invasion operation conducted in the Zap, Avaşîn and Metina regions of guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in Southern Kurdistan since April 14

Kartal pointed out that the Turkish state continues its invasion and genocidal attacks against the Kurdish people with the support of NATO. He emphasized the importance of the 25 June Düsseldorf rally.

The Kurdish politician stressed that the AKP-MHP government hopes to maintain its power based on the outcome of the war it has waged in Kurdistan.

The AKP-MHP government in general wants to eliminate the existence of the Kurdish people by pursuing a policy of genocide against them
This concept has not been completely successful. It is about to fail. For this reason, the AKP-MHP government is carrying out a large-scale attack against the Avaşîn, Zap and Metina regions. They think that if they get a result, they may prevent the fall of their government.

Turkey has been waging a war against international conventions and agreements since April 14. They have trampled on all human rights. They want to achieve results with the help of chemical and nuclear weapons which violate all laws of war.

Currently, the centre of this war is Zap and Avaşîn. The Turkish army can't achieve results. We can say that the people's defence forces and freedom guerrillas have frustrated Turkey’s war concept. Since Turkey insists on this policy, it now wants to expand its occupation through new attacks on Rojava Kurdistan.”

EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND JOIN PROTESTS

“In response to Turkey’s aggressive policies, movements against fascism will hold a major march and rally in Düsseldorf on June 25 under the guidance of European institutions and organizations, the KCDK-E and the European Women's Movement. In this context, we invite all those against the fascism of the Turkish state, the people of Kurdistan, the Turkish people, the Arab people, the European peoples, internationalist friends, parties, associations, institutions, organizations, individuals, intellectuals and journalists.

Everyone should consider themselves responsible for the chemical weapons used by Turkey and the occupation. All should attend the march and rally to be held on June 25. This is very important,” Kartal stated.

EUROPE'S SILENCE SHOULD BE CRITICIZED

Kartal remarked that the Turkish state has carried out genocidal attacks against the Kurds with the support of European states since its establishment. He added that European states are silent towards the use of chemical weapons for this reason, and every individual and group that promotes human rights should take a stand against European silence.

He continued, “Since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, European countries have been in solidarity with and supported the Turkish state against the existence of the Kurdish people and the peoples of Kurdistan.

The Turkish state pursues this genocidal policy against the Kurdish people with the support of European states. They are silent towards the use of chemical weapons and the genocidal attacks on the Kurdish people.

Iit is a humanitarian and moral thing that everyone should take a stand against the silence of European states, the European Union, NATO, and should refuse genocide against the Kurdish people. We would like to state that the rally is very important. Everyone who has a conscience and moral values should raise their voices against Kurdish genocide and participate in this rally.”

TURKEY IMPLEMENTS TERROR

KONGRA-GEL Co-Chair Remzi Kartal responded to NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg’s remark that “Turkey's concerns about the PKK are legitimate.”

“NATO fully approves and supports the policy of the Turkish state that wants to exterminate the Kurds. The Turkish state calls its policy of exterminating the Kurds a 'fight against terrorism'. NATO also accepts this policy of the Turkish state. It justifies and supports it.

Currently, it is the Turkish state that implements terrorism against the Kurds. The Turkish state does not accept the existence of the Kurdish people. The language, culture and all the achievements of the Kurdish people are in jeopardy because of Turkey’s genocidal policies. This is terrorism! This is terrorism carried out by the Turkish state! NATO and its allies are endorsing and supporting this policy,” he underlined.

EVERYONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR TURKEY’S GENOCIDAL POLICIES

Kartal pointed out that the latest genocidal campaign waged by the Turkish state in Kurdistan with the support of NATO could be evaluated within the scope of crimes against humanity in the international criminal law and it should be considered genocide, according to the International Criminal Court, since it is committed against a national group.

“We appeal to the international community. We also appeal to the public opinion of European states. We appeal to those who promote human rights and democracy.

The Turkish state wants to eliminate the existence of the Kurdish people. It is destroying the geography of Kurdistan, its ecology and everything else. For this reason, all women's movements in the world, ecological movements, movements that advocate human rights, intellectuals, individuals, journalists, political parties, humanitarian organizations are undergoing a test about the genocidal attacks against the Kurdish people.

Everyone is responsible for the genocidal policy of the Turkish state, which is endorsed by NATO. Everyone should take a stand against them. This is a crime against humanity. They want to destroy the Kurdish people. The Turkish state wants to destroy the Kurds in Bakur, Bashur, Rojava, Rojhilat through terror.

Everyone should feel responsible for this. Everyone should condemn this policy of the Turkish state, which is also supported by NATO. We should frustrate these policies and condemn NATO’s stance. NATO should also amend its policies,” Kartal concluded.

PKK bombards a Turkish base in Amedy
    Turkish fighters bombarded PKK
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bombarded A Turkish military base in Amedy district, Duhok province on Saturday, Warshin Salman, Amedy mayor told Kurdistan 24 on Saturday.

“The PKK Bombarded a Turkish military base in Latka village of Shiladze town in the afternoon on Saturday,” said Salman. “However, we are not sure what human casualties or material damages the bombardment caused.”

Mayor Salman also revealed that “following the PKK attack on the Turkish base, the Turkish air fighters repeatedly bombarded the PKK locations around Amedy district.

“The agricultural and tourism sectors of the Kurdistan Region's Amedi district in Duhok province have been severely affected by the presence of the PKK militants in the area,” said Salman on Monday.

In a statement, Salman said that "197 villagers have been evicted from their villages since 1992 due to the presence of PKK members and headquarters inside the villages and compounds of Amedi district."

"People cannot go to their villages to take care of their orchards and livestock, wasting important economic resources for the district, which is considered one of the vital areas in the economic, agricultural, and tourism fields," he added.

The mayor pointed out that "62% of the district is deserted because of the PKK and the armed clashes with Turkey."

Turkey has been intensifying its air and artillery bombardment on border areas within the Kurdistan Region for several months, targeting PKK fighters.

In mid-April, Turkey announced the launch of a new operation against the PKK. The operation, codenamed Claw-Lock, followed the Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt air and ground operations that Turkey launched in April 2021.

The PKK has been locked in a decades-long conflict against Ankara over Kurdish rights in Turkey that has caused tens of thousands of deaths on both sides. The group is headquartered in the Kurdistan Region's Qandil Mountain, mostly in rural areas along the Turkish and Iranian borders.

Officials from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have repeatedly called on Turkey and the PKK to take their fight away from areas populated by civilians. Thousands of civilians in the Kurdistan Region have been displaced by the conflict and had their farmlands and villages destroyed.

Others have been injured or even killed in the crossfire and Turkish bombardments of suspected PKK positions.

State of emergency’ amid Turkish attacks

Western Kurdistan (Rojava Kurdistani) announced a state of emergency in light of the continued Turkish attacks that have targeted area, signaling to the Kurdish administration’s institutions to prepare the emergency plans to address the situation

The administration’s general council held a meeting on Wednesday to address the “continuous threats” of Turkey in the area, which have targeted civilians and civil service facilities, according to a statement from the council.

The meeting was concluded with announcing a state of emergency in the areas under the administration, urging the administration’s councils, bodies, committees, and institutions to make the necessary preparations appropriate for the current circumstances, and dedicating all capabilities “in service of the people from any hostile attacks.”

Ankara often targets areas in Western Kurdistan.

Turkish artillery shells targeted northern Syria’s Ain Issa district on Monday killing at least two and injuring two others.

Ankara launched its last military incursion in northern Syria in October 2019, which was followed by a deal between Turkey and Russia to drive Kurdish fighters 30 kilometers away from the Turkish-Syrian border.

However, Turkey has recently renewed threats to carry out a new military operation against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria’s Manbij and Tal Rifaat towns in a bid to complete the 30 kilometer “safe zone” it began creating along its southern borders.

The administration’s statement accused Turkey of attempting to carry out demographic change in Rojava and creating a state of chaos and instability that would pave the way for “direct occupation of Syrian lands.”

Ahmet Davutoglu, former Turkish prime minister and leader of the Future Party in June responded to the claims that Turkey has attempted to carry out demographic change in Syria, stating that such an occurrence was not in the best interest of Turkey, as most of those who were displaced in Syria are now refugees in Turkey.

Ankara claims that the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the backbone of the SDF, is the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which is an armed group fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. Ankara considers both the PKK and YPG as terrorist organizations and a threat to its national security.

UN Security Council condemns Zakho bombardment

The United Nations Security Council on Monday condemned the recent attack on Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province, urging all member states to cooperate with Iraq in the investigation into the deadly bombardment

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack in Duhok province,” read a press statement from the Council published by the Irish Mission to the UN.

A tourist site in Duhok’s Zakho district was struck with artillery shelling on Wednesday, killing nine civilians, including children, and injuring 23 others. Baghdad and Erbil have attributed the attack to Turkey, but Ankara has denied the accusations on multiple occasions, blaming the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) instead.

The Security Council extended their condolences to the families affected by the attack, and reiterated their support for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday denied Ankara’s involvement in the attack, accusing the PKK of being behind the shelling.

“This once again showed us the PKK's true face,” Turkish state media cited Erdogan as saying, adding that the attack was meant to disrupt the “positive development” between Ankara and Baghdad.

Iraq has filed an official complaint to the Security Council regarding Wednesday’s bombardment. The Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to address the incident.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday condemned the attack and called for a “prompt and thorough” investigation into the incident.

The Iraqi government has pursued a number of diplomatic steps to address the recent attack on its sovereignty, including handing a “strongly worded” protest note to Turkey’s ambassador to Iraq, as well as asking the neighboring country to issue an official apology and withdraw its forces from Iraqi land.

Ankara has established an increasing number of bases and outposts in the Kurdistan Region, claiming that its presence is aimed at cutting off the path of the PKK and preventing them from crossing into the Kurdish areas of southeast Turkey.

The PKK is an armed group fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and designated a terrorist organization by Ankara.

Ankara launched a military operation against the group in Duhok province in April, claiming to target PKK hideouts in the province’s mountainous areas.

Shocking disregard' of civilian life

The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday discussed a dispute between Iraq and Turkey over a deadly attack in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province that killed at least nine holidaymakers and wounded dozens of others

Iraq Foreign Minister Fuad Husein demanded the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Iraqi territory while Turkey’s Deputy Permanent Representative Oncu Keceli said Ankara will keep pursuing members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) station in the mountains of the Region.

Baghdad and Erbil blamed last week’s shelling in Zakho on Turkey, which has repeatedly denied involvement.

Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said the “horrific attack on a … clearly identifiable tourist site demonstrates a shocking disregard for civilian life” at the start of the session.

Hussein told Rudaw’s Diyar Kurda that Iraq “has proof” that the weapons used in the attack were “Turkish.” He has previously stated that“155 mm artillery” was used in the shelling.

The attack initially injured 23 people, but Hussein later raised the toll of those wounded to over 30.

Ankara said the PKK was behind the attack, which is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey and the EU. The PKK is an armed group fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey.

Hussein in the meeting urged Ankara to take its conflict with the PKK outside the Iraqi land.

“The PKK is also a problem for Iraqi Kurdistan [Kurdistan Region] and Iraq in general. These are two forces, both are military forces [Turkish troops and PKK], their problems are in Turkey, but they have moved their problems to Iraqi Kurdistan [Kurdistan Region,” said Hussein in the meeting.

In return, Turkey’s Deputy Permanent Representative Oncu Keceli blamed Iraqi officials for failing to preserve the sovereignty of their country.

“Iraq has so far proven to be either unable or unwilling” to fight the PKK, said Keceli. “If you cannot control your own country if you are unwilling to fight against the terrorists … then you are siding either directly or indirectly with the terrorists,” he added referring to the PKK which Ankara has designated a terrorist organization.

Ankara has established an increasing number of bases and outposts in the Kurdistan Region, claiming that its presence is aimed at cutting off the path of the PKK and preventing them from crossing into the Kurdish areas of southeast Turkey.

It launched a military operation against the group in Duhok province in April, claiming to target PKK hideouts in the province’s mountainous areas.

Bombing Mt Metina scares villagers

Turkish planes on Saturday bombarded a mountain in northern Duhok province, spreading fear among villagers, but causing no casualties, a local source told Rudaw

Haval Barkayini is a resident of Balava village. He said Turkey has been bombarding Mount Metina near the village for three days, with the assault intensifying on Saturday when three areas on the mountain were targeted.

No residents of the area were hurt, but Barkayini said villagers were terrified.

Turkey has yet to comment

Turkish forces frequently carry out military assaults in the Kurdistan Region, targeting suspected Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in the mountains where the group has its headquarters. The PKK is an armed group that for decades has fought for greater Kurdish political and cultural rights in Turkey. Ankara has designated it a terror group.

The PKK called a unilateral ceasefire of operations within Turkey after the February earthquakes and extended it through to May 14 presidential and parliamentary elections, when opposition parties are hoping to end two decades of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rule.

Media close to the PKK has reported an increase in Turkish military activity in the Kurdistan Region, accusing Ankara of trying to create propaganda ahead of the election.

Baghdad has repeatedly condemned Turkey’s violations of its borders and called on armed groups not to use Iraqi territory to attack neighbouring nations. Civilians are frequently caught in the crossfire between Turkish forces and the PKK and hundreds of villages have been emptied with families moving in search of safety.

In a forum this week in Baghdad, Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari said that Iraq was beefing up security on its borders with Turkey and Iran.

Turkey claims to neutralise 2 PKK

Turkey has reportedly targeted two senior Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members in operations in the Kurdistan Region in recent days, with the PKK accusing leaders in Ankara of making propaganda ahead of key elections later this month. The operations came the same week that officials in Baghdad said they would step up border security

Turkey’s intelligence organisation MIT “neutralised” the head of PKK’s special forces logistics, Nechirvan Seven, in an operation in the Gara area of the Kurdistan Region, Anadolu Agency reported Friday morning, citing security sources.

The day before, Anadolu reported a wanted PKK member was “neutralised” in an intelligence operation in the same area. Ahmet Gumus is accused of involvement in attacks on Turkey, training PKK “assassins,” and developing weapons systems for the PKK.

The PKK has not immediately commented on the claims, but accused Ankara of stepping up operations against them in the Iran-Iraq border region “with the purpose of spreading propaganda in the run-up to the elections” and advised against believing “fake news.”

On Tuesday, a local official said Turkey carried out two drone strikes in the vicinity of Galala village, near the Kurdistan Region’s border with Iran. “There were no casualties or material damage because the drones targeted two evacuated areas where there were not many people,” Mawat district mayor Kamaran Hassan told Rudaw. Video submitted to Rudaw showed smoke on the outskirts of the village.

Turkish forces frequently conduct air and ground operations against the PKK in the Kurdistan Region’s mountains where the group has its headquarters.

On the Iraq-Turkey border, “there is a problem in holding it, as the border guards don’t hold the border strip, the zero-line specifically, but are stationed at a distance of 25 kilometres from it and have left an area that has become an area of operations for the Turkish army and the [Kurdistan] Workers’ Party,” said Shammari.

The government has allocated 72 billion dinars for building roads in order to access the rugged frontier and to form border guard units, according to the minister.

Baghdad is also coordinating with Ankara “to close the border completely, through border posts on the Iraqi side and the Turkish side holding its area and preventing the infiltration of PKK elements between Turkey and Iraq, in addition to the agreement with the Kurdistan Region for Peshmerga forces to hold the current points that are not located on the border strip,” Shammari said.

Speaking at the same forum, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani addressed the Turkey-PKK conflict, saying, “We have to be realistic and the reality is Turkey has some security concerns that are necessary for Iraq to keep in mind… We must not become a source of threats for our neighbouring country… If it wasn’t for the PKK presence on the borders, why would Turkey attack?”

“An armed group from inside Iraq, from inside the Kurdistan Region, should not be able to go and conduct a military operation in Turkey and then return to the Kurdistan Region,” he said.

Intense’ bombing of Duhok mountains

Residents of northern Duhok’s Amedi district say more than an hour of heavy bombardment by Turkish planes on Saturday morning spread fear through their villages

“There were no casualties, but this time the bombing was very intense and caused fear and anxiety for the residents in the area,” Halkaft Doski, a resident of Deraluk, told Rudaw’s Nasr Ali.

According to Doski, Turkish planes bombed the Metina and Gara mountains between 10:00 and 11:30 am.

Videos submitted to Rudaw show smoke rising from mountainsides overlooking villages.

Ankara has designated it a terror organization.

Media close to the PKK reported an increase in attacks by Turkey in May, during Turkish presidential and parliamentary election campaigning. In the last two days of May, the PKK said Turkish forces carried out 10 airstrikes against them in the Kurdistan Region, according to Firat news agency.

A suspected Turkish drone strike on Shingal injured two fighters reportedly affiliated with the PKK.

PKK stops new road near Akre

Akre: home of Newroz and best rice in Kurdistan

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has reportedly objected, and obstructed the construction of a much needed residential road to a village near the town of Akre in Duhok province.

"We decided to halt the construction of the road to avoid trouble after the PKK threatened to destroy the company assigned to build the road as well as their vehicles," Duhok Governor Ali Tatar told the press on Wednesday.

The governor confirmed that the road was meant for purely civilian purposes, to facilitate travel to the village, which is in dire need for proper access.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Wednesday announced some major infrastructure development projects for Akre and surrounding villages, including building multiple roads and potable water projects to improve public services for locals.

The PKK continues to linger in certain parts of the Kurdistan Region, hiding out in rugged, inaccessible mountain areas in Badinan and Qandil in particular.

Their presence often draws Turkish air strikes and artillery shelling, which has forced the evacuation of thousands of villages and abandonment of thousands of acres of agricultural land in the Region's most scenic areas.

PKK also obstruct the government's public service projects in areas where they hide out.

Turkish attacks continue

Turkey continues its aggression against the guerrilla areas unabated. Since the weekend, the Turkish army has carried out hundreds of air and ground attacks in the region

In its daily statement about the war in Kurdistan, the Press Centre of the People's Defence Forces (HPG) reported on Wednesday that Turkey continues its military aggression against the guerrilla-held Medya Defence Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) unabated.

According to the statement, the Turkish army has carried out more than 270 attacks against guerrilla areas in Southern Kurdistan since the weekend. In four cases, outlawed chemical weapons were used.

HPG reported chemical weapons attacks on guerrilla positions in the Sîda area in Zap on Sunday, and twelve attacks by the Turkish Air Force between 24 and 27 June. The targets of airstrikes were the Bahar, Cûdî and Amêdî resistance massifs on the western front of the Zap, Girê Hekarî in Metîna, Girê Berbizina and Goşînê in Xakurke, and Gundê Çemrobotkî and Xêrê in Gare.

Four more aerial bombardments by attack helicopters were directed against the Şêxzade and Kolît areas, also in Xakurke, on Tuesday. The attacks led to field fires in the area, which have still not been extinguished after one day. On the same day, the guerrillas responded to an attack by Turkish occupation forces at Girê FM by using heavy weapons.

In the period between 24 and 27 June, the HPG also registered 256 artillery attacks with howitzers, tanks and heavy weapons. The areas affected were Girê Bahar, Girê Cûdî, Girê Amêdî, Serê Metîna, Golka, Gundê Şêlazê, Girê Hekarî, Geliyê Lolanê, Girê Şehîd Heqî, Girê Şehîd Kamuran and Kolît. In Sîda, Turkish occupation forces tried to demolish guerrilla positions and tunnels with construction machinery.

Am I sympathetic - NO - the PKK / HPG do not belong in Southern Kurdistan and continue to make it a target for Turkish bombardment destroying Kurdish villages and farmland

PKK and it's derivatives belong in Northern Kurdistan forming the basis of a Northern Kurdistan Army

Duhok village life

In a village in Duhok’s mountains that for several years has been on the frontline of the war between the Turkish army and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), residents are trying to revive normal life in defiance of the security risk

Hirore in Kani Masi sub-district has witnessed numerous Turkey-PKK clashes since Ankara launched a series of military operations in Duhok province. Civilians are often targeted by bombardments blamed on Turkey and many villagers have been forced from their homes.

Those still living in Hirore have now formed a committee to resume the activities that had filled their calendar before their village became a war zone. Reving Hirori, a politician and a member of the committee, told Rudaw English that they are determined to hold social events despite the risk that they could be targeted. They have put on small concerts and served big meals during Islamic holidays.

On Wednesday, dozens of villagers collectively visited homes in the village, exchanging Eid al-Adha greetings. They also had a meal together.

Hirori, who has closely monitored the security of his village as a parliamentarian, said Turkish bombardments in the vicinity of the village have declined this year.

“We inform the Turkish side before entering the village to avoid being targeted,” said Hirori. In March, Turkish forces warned them not to light fires or set off fireworks during Kurdish New Year, Newroz, celebrations, but they still did it, he said.

A suspected Turkish chemical attack in 2021 targeted the house of a family in Hirore. Jihad Abdullah, a member of the family, worked hard to prove that his family was the victim of a chemical attack, but the local authorities did not help. A health official told Rudaw English at the time that they were under pressure not to speak to the media.

Abdullah’s mother still suffers from health issues he says are related to the alleged chemical attack and his father died earlier this month from a chronic illness.

Despite the risks, Abdullah is determined to remain in the village. He told Rudaw English on Thursday that visiting the centre of the village is not enough and called on relevant authorities to allow them to access the surrounding mountains as well.

“Some people want to take their livestock to the mountains but they cannot,” he said.

According to the young villager, Turkey and the local authorities have allowed them to visit only their houses and they have been warned they could be targeted if they go beyond this limit.

Villagers had previously told Rudaw English they had not seen any PKK fighters in the village. Most of the bombardments have targeted the nearby mountains.

In May 2021, Turkish soldiers visited Hirore with a warning that they would target residents if the PKK used the village to stage attacks.
