Estella Schmid and David Morgan from the Peace in Kurdistan campaign wrote a letter to the UK’s new Foreign Secretary David Lammy
The letter said: "On behalf of Peace in Kurdistan we congratulate you on your appointment as the UK’s new Foreign Secretary and on the victory of your party in the July general election.
We wish you well in your role as you work to address the serious global challenges that this country and its people face.
Our campaign has worked assiduously over many decades to assist efforts to achieve a lasting peace settlement between Turkey and the Kurds."
The letter continued: "As an MP with a large Kurdish community resident within your Tottenham constituency, we know that you are very familiar with the issues that concern the Kurds, in particular their deep wish to see an end to conflict in their homeland where Kurdish civil and political rights continue to be grossly violated by encroachments from the Turkish state.
We learn that the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer MP, held a meeting with President Erdogan of the Republic of Turkey during his recent trip to Washington, where steps to improve bilateral relations, as well as multiple global and regional issues, were on their agenda."
The letter added: "This new period of “change” has opened up a new chapter in UK-Turkish relations and Kurds will have hopes raised that their concerns will be sympathetically addressed.
Peace in Kurdistan will continue to collaborate closely with the Kurdish people to draw attention to these concerns.
We look forward to cooperating with you in your capacity as Foreign Secretary in the coming months and years to satisfy the expectations of the Kurdish people for a resolution of the unresolved conflict and efforts to build an enduring peace."
Estella Schmid has done far more for Kurdish rights and freedom over the past few decades than any Kurd has ever done but sadly most Kurds have never heard of this wonderful lady and I am certain she does not receive the support from Kurds that she richly deserves.
