People's Front LeaderBlames PUK President for unrestLahur Sheikh Jangi, leader of the People's Front, has condemned the unstable situation in Sulaymaniyah, describing it as unacceptable by any standard and attributing the problems in the city to the PUK leader and his brotherHe criticized local security forces for killing and arresting civilians indiscriminately and accused the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leadership of allowing its forces to act with impunity in the city.
On July 28, the leader of the People's Front in Sulaymaniyah, told his party's official media that security forces and police are supposed to make arrests based on a judge's order. However, he claimed that under the leadership of PUK President Bafel Talabani, the special Commando forces, which are under PUK control, regularly arrest and kill people without accountability.
"Unfortunately, what is happening in Sulaymaniyah is unparalleled globally. According to the law governing internal forces, only the police and security forces can arrest individuals based on a judge's decision. However, in Sulaymaniyah, it is the Commando forces of the 70th Unit and the Ministry of Peshmerga that are making arrests and killing people," stated Lahur Sheikh Jangi.
He further remarked, "The responsibility for these actions lies with Bafel Talabani himself. If my guards make a mistake, it reflects on me because I failed to properly train them."
Jangi also noted that a few days ago, Bafel Talabani visited the commando forces and congratulated them for asserting control over the city and restoring order, without addressing the violence committed by his forces against civilians.
He criticized the lack of functional government institutions in Sulaymaniyah and blamed Bafel Talabani and his brother, KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, for arbitrary arrests and killings carried out by the PUK’s anti-terror forces and commandos.
"These forces are not authorized to arrest people. It is time for the people to speak out and refuse to tolerate this any longer," Jangi added.
On the night of July 27, a young man named Ari, a teacher, was killed in the Raperin neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah city. Local security forces later stated that they had responded to the scene, arrested the suspect, and detained a commando force employee on charges of aiding the killer.
In recent months, PUK forces have been accused of arresting local civilians, journalists, and activists in the province. So far, no individuals close to Bafel Talabani have been held accountable for these actions.
