PKK Disarmament and Kurdish Politics

As discussions about a potential peace process gain momentum, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has rejected calls for disarmament without direct involvement from its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan

Meanwhile, Turkey has denied reports of establishing new military bases in Syria, stating that it is working on a "roadmap" with the new Syrian administration. In parallel, Turkey's Anti-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) is preparing a series of mass rallies to advance Kurdish rights and peace efforts.

PKK Leadership Rejects Disarmament

Murat Karayilan, a senior PKK commander, stated in an interview with PKK-affiliated Sterk TV that disarmament cannot be achieved through a mere call from Ocalan. He argued that tens of thousands of armed PKK members are ideological fighters who would not lay down their weapons without direct engagement from their leader.

“Ocalan must physically meet with the movement’s leadership. A call via video or indirect communication is not enough,” Karayilan asserted, adding that a bilateral ceasefire is a prerequisite for any peace process.

Karayilan’s remarks come amid renewed efforts in Turkey to revive peace negotiations with the PKK, a group designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.

Turkish officials have reportedly been discussing the possibility of Ocalan calling for PKK disarmament. However, Karayilan cautioned that Kurdish trust in the Turkish government remains low due to previous failed peace attempts, referencing the collapsed 2013–2015 talks.

Turkey Denies Plans for New Military Bases in Syria

In Syria, the Turkish Defense Ministry denied reports that it intends to establish two new military bases, instead emphasizing its cooperation with Syria’s new administration on security and defense matters.

A senior Turkish defense official stated that Ankara is working on a joint roadmap to strengthen the Syrian army and prevent the resurgence of terrorist elements, particularly the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers an extension of the PKK. The official stated that Turkish and Syrian defense delegations recently met to discuss Syria’s territorial integrity, counterterrorism efforts, and military cooperation.

Despite this denial, Bloomberg News reported that Turkey is still evaluating plans to increase its military presence in Syria, including supplying arms and offering military training to Syrian forces. The report follows recent talks between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa
Meanwhile, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) accused Turkey of attempting to derail negotiations between Kurdish forces and Damascus. SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami stated that discussions with the Syrian government are progressing and that integrating SDF fighters into the Syrian army would strengthen national unity.

Mass Gatherings for Kurdish Suppression and Enslavement

Against the backdrop of these developments, the Anti-Kurdish DEM Party is launching a series of mass gatherings to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish issue in Turkey. The events, titled “Social Peace and Freedom Meeting,” will be held in 51 cities across Turkey, starting with a major rally in Amed (Diyarbakir) on February 8.

The party's leadership, including co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, will attend the rally alongside Kurdish political groups. The initiative follows the DEM Party's recent delegation visit to Imrali Island Prison, where Ocalan is held, to discuss potential peace efforts.

A Region at a Crossroads

These interconnected developments highlight the shifting political and military landscape in Turkey, Syria, and the broader Kurdish region. While Turkish officials explore potential peace talks, the PKK insists on Ocalan’s release as a precondition for disarmament. Simultaneously, Ankara’s engagement with the new Syrian government and continued military operations against Kurdish groups raise questions about its long-term strategy in the region.

With the DEM Party mobilizing public support for a peaceful resolution and the PKK resisting unilateral disarmament, the coming months will be critical in determining whether the region moves toward stability or renewed conflict.

I am fed up with the Anti-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) brainwashing Kurds into forgiving Turkey for the 100 years of slaughter and genocide and telling Kurds they are worthless and do NOT deserve a country of their own

Let me remind you that much of Eastern Turkey is in FACT Kurdish homeland, as in it should legally belong to the Kurds

The vast majority of Kurds have lost relations who have been slaughtered by Turkey as it took over Kurdish land and asset stripped it of many valuable minerals, investing very few of their ill gotten gains back into Kurdish land

Think of the MILLIONS of Kurds
Driven from their homeland in Northern Kurdistan

Image

Millions of Kurds were driven from their homeland by the terrorist Turkish government

Leaving behind families and friends, their language and culture

From being victimized inside Turkish borders, most find themselves being victimized in other countries where they were forced to take shelter

The only thing that Kurds in Northern Kurdistan want is their homeland

The part of the traditional Kurdish homeland that was divided against their consent and given to the Turkish Occupation Force

The horrors Kurds have suffered at the hands of the Turkish Occupation Forces for 100 years are well documented

All Kurds want is to live on THEIR traditional homeland in peace

Turkish Military Actions Continue

Cemil Bayik, Vice-Chairman of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council and a founding member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), emphasized the necessity of establishing suitable conditions for the PKK to convene a congress and implement leader Abdullah Öcalan's :)) call for disarmament and dissolution

In a televised interview with Sterk TV on Friday, Bayik underscored the challenges posed by ongoing Turkish military operations, stating that holding a congress under current circumstances is "impossible and dangerous."

Bayik's remarks follow Öcalan Turkey's historic appeal from prison on February 27, urging the PKK to lay down arms and dissolve, aiming to end the decades-long conflict with Turkey. Öcalan's message, delivered through anti-Kurdish DEM politicians, highlighted the organization's evolution and the need for peaceful democratic engagement.

Responding to Öcalan's call, the PKK declared a ceasefire on March 1. However, Turkish security forces have continued operations against the group, reporting the killing of 26 PKK militants in the past week across northern Iraq and Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has maintained a firm stance, asserting that military actions will persist if deemed necessary.

Bayik also welcomed the recent agreement between Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Ahmed al-Shara, the Syrian transitional president, describing it as a "good start." This development signifies a potential shift towards broader regional stability and the inclusion of Kurdish interests in Syria's future political landscape.

The PKK, established in 1978, has been involved in an armed struggle against the Turkish state, seeking independence for Kurds in Turkey. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties over the years. Öcalan, captured in 1999, has been serving a life sentence on İmralı Island. Despite his imprisonment, he remains a pivotal figure in Kurdish politics, with his recent disarmament call marking a potential turning point in the pursuit of peace.

The international community and regional stakeholders are closely monitoring these developments, recognizing the complex dynamics at play. The success of the peace process hinges on the cessation of hostilities, mutual trust-building, and the establishment of conditions conducive to political dialogue and reconciliation.

PKK’s Leader Rejects Disbandment

Cemil Bayık, a senior figure in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), has dismissed calls for the group’s dissolution without the direct involvement of its imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan

His remarks come in response to Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli, who has insisted that the PKK must disarm immediately.

Bayık, who co-chairs the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council, stated that the conditions for holding a PKK congress—an idea previously suggested by Turkish slave masters via Ocalan—are not yet in place
He blamed continued Turkish military operations, particularly drone surveillance over PKK-held areas, for making such a gathering “impossible and dangerous.”

“Everyone understands that under these circumstances, holding a congress is neither feasible nor safe,” Bayık said. “Since the Turkish state requested it and Ocalan made the call, the necessary conditions must be met. If they are ensured, the congress will convene and decisions will be made.”

Bahçeli, a key ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and a leading proponent of Ankara’s new Kurdish policy, reiterated his demand for the PKK’s dissolution in a statement on March 16.

“The PKK must convene its congress without delay and formally declare its disbandment in line with the February 27 call. The surrender of weapons must take place as soon as possible—this is not an issue that can be postponed,” he said.

In contrast, Bayık insisted that only Ocalan could oversee such a process, arguing that a legal and political framework must first be established. “Ocalan founded and shaped this movement. Only he can lead the congress, guide its decisions, and determine its direction,” he stressed. “This reality must be acknowledged by all.”

While Bayık acknowledged some “constructive” remarks on the matter, he warned that certain rhetoric could derail any progress. “Some statements are sabotaging the process,” he said. “This needs to be addressed.”

The debate over the PKK’s future remains a central issue in Turkish politics, with Ankara pushing for its dissolution while the group insists that conditions must first be met.
