As discussions about a potential peace process gain momentum, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has rejected calls for disarmament without direct involvement from its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan
Meanwhile, Turkey has denied reports of establishing new military bases in Syria, stating that it is working on a "roadmap" with the new Syrian administration. In parallel, Turkey's Anti-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) is preparing a series of mass rallies to advance Kurdish rights and peace efforts.
PKK Leadership Rejects Disarmament
Murat Karayilan, a senior PKK commander, stated in an interview with PKK-affiliated Sterk TV that disarmament cannot be achieved through a mere call from Ocalan. He argued that tens of thousands of armed PKK members are ideological fighters who would not lay down their weapons without direct engagement from their leader.
“Ocalan must physically meet with the movement’s leadership. A call via video or indirect communication is not enough,” Karayilan asserted, adding that a bilateral ceasefire is a prerequisite for any peace process.
Karayilan’s remarks come amid renewed efforts in Turkey to revive peace negotiations with the PKK, a group designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.
Turkish officials have reportedly been discussing the possibility of Ocalan calling for PKK disarmament. However, Karayilan cautioned that Kurdish trust in the Turkish government remains low due to previous failed peace attempts, referencing the collapsed 2013–2015 talks.
Turkey Denies Plans for New Military Bases in Syria
In Syria, the Turkish Defense Ministry denied reports that it intends to establish two new military bases, instead emphasizing its cooperation with Syria’s new administration on security and defense matters.
A senior Turkish defense official stated that Ankara is working on a joint roadmap to strengthen the Syrian army and prevent the resurgence of terrorist elements, particularly the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers an extension of the PKK. The official stated that Turkish and Syrian defense delegations recently met to discuss Syria’s territorial integrity, counterterrorism efforts, and military cooperation.
- Despite this denial, Bloomberg News reported that Turkey is still evaluating plans to increase its military presence in Syria, including supplying arms and offering military training to Syrian forces. The report follows recent talks between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa
Mass Gatherings for Kurdish Suppression and Enslavement
Against the backdrop of these developments, the Anti-Kurdish DEM Party is launching a series of mass gatherings to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish issue in Turkey. The events, titled “Social Peace and Freedom Meeting,” will be held in 51 cities across Turkey, starting with a major rally in Amed (Diyarbakir) on February 8.
The party's leadership, including co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, will attend the rally alongside Kurdish political groups. The initiative follows the DEM Party's recent delegation visit to Imrali Island Prison, where Ocalan is held, to discuss potential peace efforts.
A Region at a Crossroads
These interconnected developments highlight the shifting political and military landscape in Turkey, Syria, and the broader Kurdish region. While Turkish officials explore potential peace talks, the PKK insists on Ocalan’s release as a precondition for disarmament. Simultaneously, Ankara’s engagement with the new Syrian government and continued military operations against Kurdish groups raise questions about its long-term strategy in the region.
With the DEM Party mobilizing public support for a peaceful resolution and the PKK resisting unilateral disarmament, the coming months will be critical in determining whether the region moves toward stability or renewed conflict.

I am fed up with the Anti-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) brainwashing Kurds into forgiving Turkey for the 100 years of slaughter and genocide and telling Kurds they are worthless and do NOT deserve a country of their own
Let me remind you that much of Eastern Turkey is in FACT Kurdish homeland, as in it should legally belong to the Kurds
The vast majority of Kurds have lost relations who have been slaughtered by Turkey as it took over Kurdish land and asset stripped it of many valuable minerals, investing very few of their ill gotten gains back into Kurdish land
