Two sentenced in case of forced marriage
The father and brother of a 17-year-old Kurdish girl have been sentenced to 8 and 10 months respectively for having forced the girl to travel to Northern Iraq and marry a man chosen for her by her uncle.
It is the first time anyone has been sentenced for forced marriage in Norway, according to Aftenposten.
According to the judgement, the two men threatened to kill the girl if she did not go to Iraq, where she was forced to marry.
Later, when she wanted a divorce, the father continued with threats and violence against his daughter.
Professor of anthropology at the University of Oslo, Unni Wikan, believes the conviction will attract attention also outside Norway.
She also believes the case will have great consequenses for the whole family, because it shows that the men do not have full control.
It is also believed it will help parents with foreign background to know where the line in drawn.
I wish this was happining in Kurdistan. Everyday women get killed because they don't wanna accept forced marriage and those damn KDP and PUk don't do anything about it.
