The situation in Mosul is similar to that of Kirkuk. The Islamists were able to establish themselves in these cities because the Arabs know that they don't belong there and are threatened by whoever might potentially displace them: Kurds in Kirkuk, Assyrians in Mosul. In Kirkuk thankfully the Kurds poured in by the hundreds of thousands and took control, even though the police and civilians there still have to deal with Arab cockroaches on a daily basis. In Mosul sadly the Assyrians are a minority and the Arabs continue their ethnic cleansing. By the way, has anyone been to Mosul lately? It's a complete rundown mess. Actually I think Mosul will never return to its former greatness and will instead become a minor Iraqi city. Sadly its time for Assyrians to quit the city and quit Arab Iraq all together. You've seen their true intentions.
