Iran's air defenses down drones

Following circulating news on Western-based media outlets, regarding a supposed Israeli attack on Iran, sources told Al Mayadeen that such an event did not occur. Instead, Iranian air defenses repelled a relatively small drone attack in Tabriz and Isfahan, which were likely launched domestically

What is being circulated about an Israeli attack on Iran are lies and are part of a misinformation war, according to our sources.

Iranian sources also added that complicit United States media outlets are waging a proxy war of disinformation on behalf of the Israeli occupation.

This comes after Iran's Space Agency confirmed that several drones, of unspecified origin, were downed over Iranian airspace. The agency said that no missile attack on Iran occurred on Friday.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said that short-range and medium-range Iranian air defense batteries repelled the attack.

Earlier, Iran's Mehr News Agency, citing the Director General of the Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company, said that all air traffic was suspended in Isfahan, Shiraz, and Tehran. Iranian media outlets reported that air defense systems were activated in Isfahan, as explosions of an unknown cause were heard.

Al Mayadeen's correspondent, citing the spokesperson of the Iranian Space Agency, said that air defense batteries responded to three targets over Isfahan. He added that reports indicate that air defenses responded to threats in Qahjavarestan, northeast of Isfahan, as no aerial objects hit ground targets.

Our correspondent stressed that all of the explosions heard on Friday were a result of air defense interceptions.

The Islamic Republic News Agency reports that air defenses were activated in Tabriz, in northern Iran, resulting in a series of explosions. The agency added that no aerial objects hit ground targets in Tabriz and that all loud sounds were a result of interceptors exploding over Tabriz's sky.

Blockade for Palestine

Western governments enabled and encouraged their single largest militia outpost, "Israel", to bomb, brutalise, butcher, and besiege Gaza. But on April 15th a few thousand brave people turned the tables and lay siege to thirty cities around the world

Gaza Besieged

There is an irony to it. For almost 200 days much of the world has watched Gaza starve to death by an "Israel"-imposed blockade. Remember the menacing promise by Israeli Security Minister Yoav Gallant on October 7th, 2023? Dressed in black, Gallant, with a pale face and a light dusting of white hair, stared down the camera lens. His eyes were vacant, and like a ghost from the future, he forewarned of a disaster, “I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed.”

The disaster was wholly of Gallant’s making. His words should have been enough for the UN and its legal apparatus to swing into action and pursue both Gallant and the settler state of "Israel" for crimes against humanity. But that didn’t happen. Instead, the colonial monster we assumed, and hoped dead, was in fact simply masquerading as a more polite form of pity, a subtler practice of coercion. Within days of Gallant’s infamous words, the facade fell away, and colonial powers rallied to protect their garrison outpost of "Israel". Western politicians rushed to unashamedly visit the settler state, and parrot ‘self-defence.’ It was then we realised we had been tricked.

International institutions, promoted as fair and designed to serve all, were in fact racist vehicles of oppression and control. Colonialism had never gone away; it is simply cloaked in a different cloth. The uninformed talking heads on Western news programmes, the nonsensical UN debates, and hypocritical Western government officials once again lectured us, trying to mislead us into thinking the world was made up of the civilised and the uncivilised, the enlightened and the brutes.

There is light, and that is where they live, and there is darkness, where others merely exist. This twisted colonial logic is what gives birth to Whiteness, with all its rights, protection, and recourse. Whiteness is by its very nature exclusive and operates on exceptionalism. It feeds on oppression and violence, someone must suffer for it to function, and that someone can have no entitlements, otherwise Whiteness doesn’t work.

So, Western governments enabled and encouraged their single largest militia outpost, "Israel", to bomb, brutalise, butcher, and besiege Gaza. But on April 15th a few thousand brave people turned the tables and lay siege to thirty cities around the world. Gaza, colonialism’s open wound, was striking back. And the irony was on view for all to see.

Thirty Cities Blockaded

The message was simple and shared across social media platforms: “The global economy is complicit in genocide. Join participating cities in blocking the arteries of capitalism and jamming the wheels of production.”

Thirty cities heard the call and readied themselves to lay siege to bridges, highways, ports, factories, and offices. The day chosen, Monday, April 15th, carries significance in the Palestinian calendar: It is the date the 1936-39 anti-Zionist revolt began.

Australia began the worldwide siege and solidarity campaign by blockading a series of sites in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney, as well as office entrances to companies with ties to Israel including BP, Ferra, and Thales.

In Vietnam, campaigners held teach-ins on Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) tactics. In addition, the five largest supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City were occupied and stickers were placed on products produced by firms linked to "Israel". The firms included Nestlé, P&G, Unilever, and Pepsi Co. The firms were also called out for their support of "Israel’s" apartheid system.

Europe followed several hours later. In Greece, ports including COSCO port, and roads were besieged, while in Belfast the main harbour was blockaded as locals chanted “Ní Saoirse go Saoirse don Phailistín” (There is no freedom until Palestine is free). Parts of Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Utrecht were also blockaded. In London property firm Metric, who manage facilities for weapons manufacturers BAE, Elbit and Boeing, had their office blockaded, while there was a silent protest in the main shopping area of Piccadilly.

In Canada, activists came together to blockade Halifax’s main port, where Israeli shipping company Zim has an office. In the US, highways and streets in several states were blocked, in New York, the Brooklyn Bridge was blockaded, and in California, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge was brought to a standstill. The port of Oakland, the ninth busiest in the US, was blockaded for seven hours.

A Collective of the Morally Conscious

When I answer the phone, I hear a police siren over the chatter of voices. I am speaking with Hay Sha Wiya who despite the commotion is calm and clear. Hay Sha Wiya knows about occupation – she is from the tribal nation of Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux in unceded Turtle Island (referred to as the United States by colonialists).

She feels an affinity with the Palestinian cause – an occupied land and an oppressed indigenous population. She tells me how she is morally uncomfortable with the situation in Palestine and how solidarity with Gaza, and Gazans, is a moral imperative; how symbolic actions are no longer enough and the time for collective risk has arrived.

Hay Sha Wiya knows the terrain well. She sees the links between capitalism and colonialism, and how they feed off each other uninhibited. Today, she is part of a morally conscious collective laying siege to those parts of the economy that are openly profiting off the butchery, death, and genocide of Palestinians.

Their Pain is our Resistance

As I write, my phone is lighting up with details of more blockades. It is also lighting up with news from Gaza. Another mass grave holding ten bodies, some with bandages and catheters still attached, has been unearthed at Al-Shifa Hospital, food shortages are getting worse, and civilians returning to North Gaza earlier today were shot at. The accompanying video is upsetting - men and women of all ages run for cover as automatic gunfire can be heard. Overhead are drones. People are throwing themselves on the ground to avoid being shot.

For some, it’s too late. One young male, mid-twenties perhaps, is clearly in pain and blood covers his lower abdomen and leg. The next scene finds a recess deep in my mind and won’t leave. It is of a woman. She is seated and is wearing a dark patterned headscarf. She is holding a child, tightly, and is rocking backwards and forwards. You can only see half the woman’s face; the other half is buried in the child’s dark hair. The woman is quiet, the child is lifeless. The little girl was hit by an Israeli bullet in the mouth.

At the same time as the child’s death, the colonial ringmasters were performing: The Portuguese Prime Minister said his country was not ready to recognise a Palestinian state, while the US Pentagon said it is prepared to "take all necessary action to defend Israel and US personnel" and "will defend Israel no matter what."

The UK’s David Cameron boasted "RAF [Royal Air Force] jets could defend Israel again, even if the country’s leaders ignored calls from the UK and US to hold back from retaliation against Iran." German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock suggested "Israel" could "defend itself … together with strong allies." Germany reportedly approved €326.5 million worth of arms exports to "Israel" in 2023.

People across thirty cities felt Gaza’s pain and turned it into an act of collective resistance. They showed us all it is time to escalate.

It is much easier for you

To push an elephant through a needle’s eye,

    Catch fried fish in galaxy,

    Blow out the sun,

    Imprison the wind,

    Or make a crocodile speak,

    Than to destroy by persecution

The shimmering glow of a belief

    Or check our march

    Towards our cause

    One single step…

Yemen witnesses million-man
    rallies in support of Gaza
The rallies' organizing committees issued a statement reaffirming the Yemeni people's solidarity with the oppressed in Gaza and all Palestinian territories

The Yemeni capital Sanaa and several other governorates witnessed on Friday million-man rallies reaffirming Yemen's continued support for the Palestinian people.

The rallies' organizing committees issued a statement announcing the resumption of solidarity activities and rallies in support of the Palestinian people, condemning the Israeli aggression and siege on the Gaza Strip.

The statement reaffirmed the Yemeni people's steadfast position against injustice and its solidarity with the oppressed in Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories.

It also condemned the stance of some Arab regimes supporting the Israeli occupation entity, calling for more awareness in support of the Palestinian people and urging the free people of the nation not to be deceived by the misleading policies of the occupation entity and its tools.

The statement expressed the Yemeni people's condemnation of the complicit stance of some Arab sides with the Israeli occupation entity and their contribution in defending it militarily, politically, and media-wise.

Furthermore, it hailed the Yemeni Armed Forces for their operations in solidarity with the Palestinian people, calling on the Yemeni Navy and Air Force to continue targeting ships affiliated with the Israeli occupation entity until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in Gaza is lifted. In the same context, the statement praised the heroic operations of the Resistance movements in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq.

It also extended condolences to the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, whose sons and grandchildren were killed at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces, and commended the cohesion and solidarity among the leadership of the Palestinian factions.

Elsewhere, the statement congratulated the Iranian people and leadership for the successful and strong retaliatory attack against Israeli targets.

Increasing illegal settling

Israeli politicians are rushing to propose methods of strengthening illegal settling in the West Bank in response to the increasing recognition of Palestine.

The Israeli government is looking to "strengthen" illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank in response to countries recognizing the Palestinian State along the 1967 borders.

A statement issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that proposals for strengthening colonial settling projects in the occupied territory will be voted on at the next security cabinet meeting.

This announcement comes following growing hostility expressed by Israeli politicians in response to the recognition of Palestine by Spain, Ireland, and Norway, who made the move as part of their efforts to bring back into the picture a "peace process" between the Israeli government and the Palestinian people.

Netanyahu and his government's response to the decision to recognize the Palestinian State emphatically reveals the Israeli stance on the prospects of supposed peace in the occupied territories.

Efforts to reinforce Israeli settler projects in the occupied West Bank have seen increased support following the formation of Netanyahu's coalition government in late 2022.

Although illegal settling in the West Bank first started in 1967, the arrival of far-right and ultra-Orthodox Israeli politicians into the ruling coalition has intensified efforts of ethnically cleansing Palestinians in the West Bank, continuously arming armed settlers and employing policies of maximum pressure policies against the native Palestinians.

The war on Gaza has also coincided with direct calls for the mass expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, especially from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

In May, Smotrich urged the approval of an additional 10,000 settlement units in the West Bank and the establishment of a new settlement in the occupied territory for every country that recognizes Palestine.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank have been deemed illegal by international bodies, and the establishment of some is also illegal under Israeli law. However, the continuous expansion of Israeli settlements has been spurred by consecutive governments that provided the means and infrastructure for the establishment of colonial outposts.

Not only that but Israeli occupation forces are also heavily involved in providing the necessary security for the establishment of these units on usurped Palestinian lands.

There are currently 144 illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which cut and slice the territory, altering its demography and economy and heavily affecting day-to-day life for Palestinians.

Pro-Palestine protests continue

Protesters in New York interrupt a progressive rally aimed at endorsing US President Joe Biden.

Protests in support of the Palestinian people are continuing across the globe, spanning from the US all the way to Europe and Asia.

In Ghent, Belgium, a pro-Palestine demonstration was held on Saturday. Demonstrators held flags and maps of Palestine

Social media footage shows demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and maps and carrying posters reading "Student Intifada" and "End bloodshed and dehumanization now."

Some civil society organizations in Belgium have joined the demand to boycott "Israel", including significant groups such as 11.11.11, Vrede vzw, and the Ghent Coalition for Palestine, as well as Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister, Petra De Sutter.

In Italy, Rome, Milan, and Messina held solidarity protests in support of Palestine over the weekend.

Protesters expressed being upset at how several Arab nations remain silent, or even complicit.
Pro-Palestine protest disrupts progressives in New York rally

In the United States, demonstrators for Palestine disrupted a joint rally that included Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont).

Protesters brought together by Within Our Lives, a New York-based pro-Palestine organization, disrupted the joint demonstration led by the three US politicians on Saturday in support of US President Joe Biden in the forthcoming US presidential election in November.

Within Our Lifetime wrote in a thread on X that "endorsing Biden is endorsing the ongoing genocide in Gaza."

Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the pro-Biden rally chanting, “Intifada, Intifada”, and “Genocide Joe has got to go.”

According to a video released on X, the demonstrators scrawled messages on the buses and put stickers on the Bowman's campaign buses.

Pakistanis denounce Israeli war crimes in Gaza

Pakistan saw mass protests condemning Israeli war crimes in Gaza and the flagrant violations of human rights.

The marchers shouted anti-US and anti-"Israel" chants, urging the government to terminate diplomatic ties with Washington and any other country that supports "Israel".

The boycott of pro-Israeli firms in Pakistan gained traction when protesters, largely students from educational institutions and religious seminaries, were arrested last week while attempting to conduct a demonstration in front of an international restaurant chain in Islamabad.

Police detained demonstrators calling for a boycott of pro-Israeli enterprises in the nation.

One protester told PressTV that the government of Pakistan is "afraid of the US," citing that demonstrations will end if the government of Pakistan fulfills one demand, that is, calling "Ismail Haniyeh, to offer condolences to him, and, to offer more support from the nation of Pakistan."

"They are afraid they held the aid package and they want the spare parts from the Jordan. So they're afraid and they do not represent the sentiments of the people of Pakistan."

The number of Palestinians killed since the start of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on October 7 has risen to 37,598 and those injured to 86,032, the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip confirmed on Sunday.

In its daily report, the Health Ministry stated that the Israeli occupation forces committed three massacres in 24 hours, killing a total of 47 people and injuring 121 others.

Hamas' relocation to Baghdad

Hamas has decided to relocate its political leadership to Baghdad after getting the approval of the Iraqi government.

Hamas intends to move its political leadership from Doha, Qatar, to Baghdad, Iraq, in a decision already approved by the Iraqi government, UAE newspaper The National revealed, citing Iraqi lawmakers.

The National noted that last month, the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, and Iraqi and Iranian government officials had been discussing a possible relocation to Baghdad. Haniyeh also discussed the matter with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani during a phone call conversation.

In early June, the movement established its political office in Baghdad and plans to launch a press center there in the upcoming weeks, but is still determining a timeframe for the relocation. Additionally, the newspaper reported that Tehran would handle the security of the movement's members in Iraq.

The decision comes in the light of pressures on the Resistance movement, mainly from the United States, to push it to back down on its non-negotiables regarding the mediated negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Blinken pushed Qatar to threaten Hamas with expulsion from Doha

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked Qatar earlier in March to make Hamas aware of two options: Either to accept the captives and ceasefire deal being proposed by "Israel" and Washington, or risk getting expelled from Doha.

Sources familiar with this matter unveiled to CNN at the time that Blinken delivered this message to Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during a meeting in Washington on March 5.

US officials said that Qatar understood the message and received it without major pushback.

India exports rockets, explosives to Israel

In the early morning hours of May 15, the cargo vessel Borkum stopped off the Spanish coast, lingering in the waters a short distance from Cartagena. At the port, protesters waved Palestinian flags and called on authorities to inspect the ship based on suspicions that it carried weapons bound for Israel

Leftist members of the European Parliament sent a letter to Spanish President Pedro Sánchez requesting that the ship be prevented from docking. “Allowing a ship loaded with weapons destined for Israel is to allow the transit of arms to a country currently under investigation for genocide against the Palestinian people,” the group of nine MEPs warned.

Before the Spanish government could take a stand, the Borkum cancelled its planned stopover and continued to the Slovenian port of Koper. “We were right,” Inigo Errejon, the spokesperson for the hard-left Sumar party wrote on X, arguing that the Borkum’s decision to skip Cartagena confirmed the suspicions.

But missed in the debate over whether the ship ought to be allowed to dock in Spain were the unlikely origins of the Borkum’s cargo.

According to documents seen by Al Jazeera, the ship contained explosives loaded in India and was en route to Israel’s port of Ashdod, some 30km (18 miles) from the Gaza Strip. Marine tracking sites show it departed Chennai in southeast India on April 2 and circumnavigated Africa to avoid transiting through the Red Sea, where Yemen’s Houthis have been attacking vessels in reprisal for Israel’s war.

The identification codes specified in the documentation, obtained unofficially by the Solidarity Network Against the Palestinian Occupation (RESCOP), suggest the Borkum contained 20 tonnes of rocket engines, 12.5 tonnes of rockets with explosive charges, 1,500kg (3,300 pounds) of explosive substances and 740kg (1,630 pounds) of charges and propellants for cannons.

A paragraph on confidentiality specified that all employees, consultants or other relevant parties were mandated that “under no circumstances” were they to name IMI Systems or Israel. IMI Systems, a defence firm, was bought by Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, in 2018.

The commercial manager of the ship, the German company MLB Manfred Lauterjung Befrachtung, told Al Jazeera in a statement that “the vessel did not load any weapons or any other cargo for the destination Israel”.

A second cargo ship that had departed India was denied entry on May 21 to the port of Cartagena. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the Marianne Danica left from India’s port of Chennai and was en route to Israel’s port of Haifa with a cargo of 27 tonnes of explosives. Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Manuel Albares confirmed in a news conference that the vessel was denied entry on the grounds that it was shipping military cargo to Israel.

These incidents add to mounting evidence that weapon parts from India, a country that has long advocated dialogue over military action in resolving conflicts, are quietly making their way to Israel, including during the ongoing months-long war in Gaza. A lack of transparency on India’s transfers helps them slip under the radar, say analysts.

But “collaboration between India and Israel has been happening for quite a few years now”, Hussain said, therefore “it’s not unfeasible that we may see some made-in-India components being used by Israel [in its war on Gaza]”.

‘Made in India’

On June 6, in the aftermath of Israel’s bombing of a United Nations shelter at the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, the Quds News Network released a video of the remains of a missile dropped by Israeli warplanes.

Amid the tangled parts, a label clearly read: “Made in India.”

Hussain, who researches the transfer of conventional arms at the Stockholm-based think tank, said the video required further investigation but observed that a large share of the collaboration between India and Israel is known to revolve around missile production, in particular the Barak surface-to-air missile.

According to SIPRI, the Indian company Premier Explosives Limited makes solid propellants – a significant part of the rocket motors, but not the whole motor – for MRSAM and LRSAM missiles. These are the Indian designations for Barak medium and long-range surface-to-air missiles of Israeli design.

The company’s executive director, T Chowdary, admitted to exporting to Israel amid the current war in Gaza, during a conference call on March 31. “We have received the pending revenue from the Israel export order, and this has shown an exponential jump in the revenue of the quarter,” he told investors, according to the minutes of the meeting. “We are happy to announce that we have highest ever quarterly revenue.”

On that occasion, Chowdary presented Premier Explosives Limited as “the only Indian company which specialises in the export of fully assembled rocket motor”. In addition, he said the company had begun manufacturing mines and ammunitions and started exporting RDX and HMX explosives, commonly used in military weapons systems.

In its January 2024 overview, the company listed exports to Israel in the “defence & space” sector, which SIPRI deemed likely to include propellants for Barak missiles.

Premier Explosives did not respond to Al Jazeera’s requests for comment.

According to SIPRI, the Indian components can be used for Barak missiles that are then also reexported by Israel.
Indian made UAVs

Yet, India’s collaboration with Israel goes far beyond rocket propellers.

In December 2018, Adani Defence & Aerospace – the defence arm of Indian multinational holding company Adani Enterprises Ltd – and Israel’s Elbit Systems inaugurated the Adani Elbit Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Complex (UAV) in Hyderabad.

The facility was presented in a joint statement as “the first outside Israel to manufacture the Hermes 900 Medium Altitude Long Endurance UAV”, which can fly for up to 36 hours at an altitude of 30,000 feet (9,000 metres).

“The factory shall start operations with the manufacturing of complete carbon composite aero-structures for Hermes 900, followed by Hermes 450,” the statement added. Both drones can be fitted with antitank guided missiles, according to the drone inventory of the United Kingdom’s leading defence think tank the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

“The production of Hermes drones is as important for India as it is for Israel,” SIPRI’s Hussain said. “For Israel, it means they have a factory outside of the country. For India, it’s about technology transfer, so that it can also produce drones based on the Israeli model.”

Earlier this year, India announced its first indigenous medium-altitude long-endurance drone, the Drishti 10 Starliner, built on the Hermes model.

The factory is currently producing the UAVs, including for shipment to Israel, according to SIPRI, but India has not disclosed any information about their transfer.

Israel is known to be systematically using drones as it wages its war on Gaza, which has killed more than 37,000 people, most of them women and children. In November, in the aftermath of Hamas’s attack on October 7, Elbit deputy CEO Joseph Gaspar said the company had been working “round the clock” to meet demand by Israel’s military.

The use of Hermes drones has been documented by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and other organisations in previous conflicts in Gaza as well. Earlier this month, Lebanon’s Hezbollah fighters said they shot down an armed Hermes 900 drone in its airspace. Since October, Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed more than 400 people, including more than 70 civilians.

“If we see Hermes drones being used in Gaza, they’re not necessarily coming from India,” as Israel also produces them in-house, SIPRI’s Hussein said. But the possibility that India has begun exporting the drones as per the terms of the agreement and that they are currently being used against the Palestinian population in the besieged Strip cannot be ruled out, he added.

Elbit Systems did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment. The Adani Group, which includes Adani Defence & Aerospace, told Al Jazeera in a statement that the company exported a small consignment of UAVs for noncombat operations.

“We reiterate that these drones are built for surveillance and reconnaissance and cannot be used for attack roles,” it said. “We categorically deny having exported any UAVs to Israel since October 7, 2023.”
India’s balancing act

India has been pursuing a longstanding balancing act in its relationship with Israel. New Delhi has attempted to cast itself as a conciliatory actor and a possible mediator in the conflict in Gaza, calling for peace and supporting calls for a ceasefire while also demanding that Hamas return captives still held in Gaza.

More broadly, Indian officials – from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his Minister of Foreign Affairs S Jaishankar and the country’s diplomats at the UN – have consistently argued that the country believes in dialogue and negotiations, not war, as the only means to resolve conflicts. That has been India’s formal position when it comes to Russia’s war on Ukraine and Israel’s war on Gaza.

“But reports that it is supplying Israel with weapons could disrupt that narrative,” Nicolas Blarel, the author of The Evolution of India’s Israel Policy, told Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera sought comments from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence on June 17 and then again on June 21, but has not received a response.

India recognised the state of Israel in 1950, only two years after its formation, but established formal diplomatic relations in 1992 after decades of non-aligned and pro-Arab policy. In 1974, it became the first non-Arab country to accept the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and recognised the State of Palestine in 1988.

PLO leader Yasser Arafat used to famously describe former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as his “sister”.

In the 1990s, as the Cold War ended and Arafat engaged with then-Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in a series of talks that culminated in the Oslo Accords, India also opened up to collaboration with Israel.

“That accelerated in 1999, with the war between India and Pakistan,” Blarel, who lectures in International Relations at Leiden University in the Netherlands, said. “Most countries refused to sell weapons to both countries, except most notably Israel.”

Since then, Israel has been willing to engage India on technology transfer to an extent that no other partner has, providing know-how on drones, electric sensors for border control and other surveillance systems that are crucial to India along its tense borders with Pakistan and China, Blarel added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of the Hindu majoritarian Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), veered further from the country’s historic pro-Palestinian stance after he was elected in 2014.

Modi adopted a more public embrace of Israel, becoming the first prime minister to travel to the country in 2017. The strategic partnership that resulted from the visit, which included areas such as space and technology, softened India’s stance on Israel to a “case-by-case approach”, where India’s position was no longer guaranteed to support that of Palestinians”, Blarel said.

Modi has since repeatedly referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as his “friend”.

The same approach continues to this day. On October 26, weeks after the Hamas attack and the beginning of Israel’s reprisal in Gaza, India abstained from a UN General Assembly (UNGA) vote on a resolution calling for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce”.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Indians were “big victims of terrorism” and were therefore sympathetic to Israel. The resolution, Jaishankar argued echoing Israel’s position, lacked an “explicit condemnation” of the Hamas attack that killed 1,139 Israelis.

India later voted in favour of a UNGA resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, but in April abstained from voting for a resolution adopted by the UN Human Rights Council that called for an arms embargo on Israel in addition to an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Earlier this month, India joined other members of the BRICS grouping – Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates – in issuing a statement expressing “grave concern” at the escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip and calling for an immediate ceasefire.

“India sometimes sees the UN resolutions as being too strict, because it has a good relationship with Israel, but sometimes sides with Palestinians” as it seeks to cast itself as a champion of developing nations amid stiff competition with China for that role, Blarel said.

While “Modi would support a more public embrace of Israel,” the analyst said, he has also invested in cultivating strategic relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), India’s largest regional-bloc trading partner.

Modi’s governing BJP lost its majority in the lower house of India’s parliament earlier this month, leaving it dependent on coalition allies to stay in power for the first time since coming to power a decade ago. Now more than ever, Blarel said, the BJP will have “to consider having good diplomatic relationships with all actors in the Middle East as one of its priorities”.

Palestinian children buried under rubble

UNICEF's deputy executive director underscores the severe toll on Palestinian children amid widespread death and destruction due to the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban highlighted the significant number of child casualties in the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip during a UN Security Council meeting on children and armed conflict on Wednesday. He stressed that thousands of children remain buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings in the Palestinian territory.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he emphasized that Palestinian children are experiencing "incomprehensible suffering," especially in the Gaza Strip, amid the “staggering” scale of death and destruction.

Chaiban mentioned that over 23,000 cases of children being killed or injured in 2023 remain unverified due to insecurity, movement restrictions, and significant risks faced by humanitarian personnel working in Gaza.

“The bodies of thousands of missing children remain buried under rubble, and none of this includes the thousands of violations reported so far in 2024,” he stressed.

The UNICEF official also highlighted the obstacles hindering aid deliveries to Gaza, which are contributing to the rising number of acutely malnourished children. He noted that "after nearly nine months of horrible conflict, UNICEF and other humanitarian actors are still struggling to reach those in need."

He further called for “a complete ceasefire” in Gaza, where many children are dying due to the starvation imposed by "Israel" on the besieged territory.
War on Gaza orphaned over 17,000 children, Gov. says

In a heartwrenching revelation, the Government Media Office in Gaza reported Monday that over 17,000 children have become orphans since the start of the Israeli genocide against Palestinians in Gaza more than eight months ago.

More shockingly, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza, three percent of the orphaned children in the region have tragically lost both parents due to the ongoing Israeli aggression.

'Families are tortured'

Save the Children, a leading humanitarian organization for children, reported that around 21,000 Palestinian children are believed to be missing due to "Israel’s" intense attacks on Gaza. This estimate includes approximately 17,000 children who are separated from their families and unaccompanied, as well as about 4,000 children who are feared to be missing under the rubble.

The organization also highlighted that some children might have been buried in unmarked graves, while others have forcibly disappeared, including those abducted and taken out of Gaza.

“Families are tortured by the uncertainty of the whereabouts of their loved ones. No parent should have to dig through rubble or mass graves to try and find their child’s body. No child should be alone, unprotected in a war zone. No child should be detained or held hostage,” said Jeremy Stoner, Save the Children’s regional director for the Middle East.

He emphasized the critical need for a ceasefire in Gaza, describing it as essential to supporting the surviving missing children and preventing further devastation of families.

'Israel' killed over 14,000 children

Earlier this year, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported that "Israel" has killed over 14,000 children in Gaza since October 7, with others being starved to death due to malnutrition as a result of the total Israeli blockade.

"Since October, Gaza has faced relentless violence which has killed over 37,000 people, including thousands of children," as per the Save the Children report.

As of June 9, the report also indicated that approximately 250 Palestinian children are unaccounted for in the occupied West Bank.

US to bomb shipments for Israel

The United States will be releasing a huge shipment of 500 lb bombs to the Israeli occupation as Biden seeks to mend ties with pro-Israelis

Axios reported that the Biden administration is set to release a shipment of 500-pound bombs to the Israeli occupation after it had been previously put on hold over concerns about the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) aggression and massacres in Rafah.

Reportedly, the Biden administration is resuming the shipments because the President seeks to mend ties with pro-Israeli lobbyists and supporters amid soaring tensions over the suspension of the bombs package.

In early May, President Biden decided to suspend a weapons shipment to the Israeli occupation, which included 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs, due to concerns about the IOF invading Rafah, though the focus was on the 2,000-pound, as they were deemed inappropriate for use in such a densely-populated area.

After a series of talks, the US buckled under the pressure and gave in to the demands of the Israeli occupation, reaching an agreement to release the 500-pound bombs independently from the 2,000-pound bombs.

An Israeli official said the 500-pound bombs would be delivered after the conclusion of the Israeli occupation's invasion of Rafah, which is expected to end in two weeks. The Israeli occupation forces claim these bombs are essential in case of an escalation with Hezbollah on the northern front with Lebanon.

Despite the progress, the shipment of 2,000-pound bombs remains under review.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may take advantage of his upcoming address at the White House to openly attack US President Joe Biden and his administration's handling of the war on Gaza.

As Netanyahu is due to address a joint session of Congress next month, an unnamed US official told Politico on Saturday, “no one knows what he’s going to say”.

According to another senior official, Netanyahu "could make it far worse up there in front of Congress" and his most recent call-out of the US "was not helpful at all."

In response to Netanyahu scolding the US for withholding ammunition and weapons from "Israel", White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby expressed that the White House was not aware the video was coming and called it "perplexing to say the least, certainly disappointing."

Politico continued to add that a "diplomatically complicated and politically dicey spectacle for a president running for reelection" may result from the speech if he does openly criticize Biden.

Three Biden administration officials have voiced their concerns that Netanyahu's actions have been creating a rift between the two allies, thereby undermining the Israeli occupation's deterrence in the region, particularly from the perspective of Hezbollah and Iran.

Speaking in English, Netanyahu issued a video in which he said it was "inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunition from Israel."

Publicly, the White House expressed bafflement. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre pointed out that only one weapons shipment had been paused since the war began, while billions of dollars worth of weapons had continued to flow unimpeded.

Israel greenlights West Bank settlements

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich says the five settlement outposts are Evyatar, Givat Assaf, Sde Efraim, Heletz, and Adorayim

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich revealed late Thursday that the Security Cabinet has approved the authorization of five West Bank settlement outposts and the imposition of additional sanctions on the Palestinian Authority.

The announcement followed a break in the security cabinet's meeting during which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consulted with advisors due to concerns that the approvals might escalate tensions with the United States.

"The Security Cabinet authorized one outpost for every country that unilaterally recognized Palestine as a state in the last month," Smotrich pointed out.

The Israeli minister added that the so-called Higher Planning Council for the West Bank is set to meet to advance the approval of thousands of housing units in the settlements
He indicated that "after weeks of discussions, the Israeli government promoted an appropriate response to the anti-Israeli measures led by the Palestinian Authority."

According to Smotrich, sanctions against the Palestinian Authority will include revoking exit permits for officials and increasing enforcement against what is deemed as "illegal" Palestinian buildings in Area C of the West Bank.

It is worth noting that the occupied West Bank was divided into three administrative sections under the 1993 Oslo Accords, with Area A managed by the Palestinian Authority, Area B under alleged shared sovereignty, and Area C – the largest area, accounting for around 60% of the occupied Palestinian territories – under full Israeli administrative and security control.

Smotrich considered that "the Palestinian Authority joined Hamas in trying to harm Israel in Israel and in the world and we will fight it."

"For those who needed proof, we got it on October 7. A Palestinian state in the heart of Israel is an existential danger, I will not allow such a disaster to be brought upon the State of Israel," he stressed.

Later, Israeli media reported that Smotrich will finalize moves to unfreeze tax funds withheld from the Palestinian Authority as part of a deal to gain cabinet approval for legalizing the aforementioned West Bank settlements outposts and implementing new sanctions on senior Palestinian officials.

Haaretz mentioned that the minister will also extend a waiver allowing Israeli banks to cooperate with their Palestinian counterparts.

Smotrich had initially vowed to withhold funds collected by "Israel" on behalf of the PA and let the bank waiver expire after June unless the Israeli government adopted a series of punitive measures against the PA in response to Norway, Spain, and Ireland's recognition of a Palestinian state, along with the PA's support for cases against "Israel" before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
IOF hand power over West Bank to pro-settler officials under Smotrich

Smotrich's latest announcement comes a week after The Guardian revealed that the Israeli occupation military discreetly transferred substantial legal authority in the occupied West Bank to Israeli extremist groups ganging up under the Israeli finance minister.

A directive published by the Israeli army on its website on May 29 shifts the responsibility for numerous bylaws within the so-called "Civil Administration", the Israeli body governing the West Bank, from the military to public employees working under Smotrich at the Security Ministry.

In addition, The New York Times reported that Smotrich was recorded telling supporters of the settler movement that the government is involved in a covert effort to alter how "Israel" administers the West Bank.

The newspaper indicated that the recording was from an event earlier in the month where Smotrich told supporters that the aim was preventing the West Bank from becoming part of a Palestinian state.

A spokesperson for Smotrich confirmed the authenticity of the recording, which the newspaper said was provided by a researcher from the Peace Now anti-settlement group who attended the event on June 9.

In the recording, Smotrich detailed his intentions to shift authority from the Israeli military to pro-settler officials within the Security Ministry, leveraging the extensive powers granted to him through his Religious Zionism party's coalition agreement with Netanyahu's Likud.

Smotrich stated, "We established a distinct civilian system," noting that, to avoid international scrutiny, the government has permitted the Security Ministry to maintain its involvement in the process, as reported by the Times.

"It will be easier to swallow in the international and legal context," he went on to say. "So that they won’t say that we are doing annexation here."

Smotrich also revealed that Netanyahu was "full on" with the plan.

Hamas reject foreign troops in Gaza

This comes amid statements by some countries supporting the deployment of international forces in Gaza, stirring up controversy

Palestinian Resistance factions opposed any plans or proposals for the governance of the Gaza Strip that go beyond a solely Palestinian administration of the besieged territory.

The Islamic Resistance Movement - Hamas released a strong-worded statement rejecting any proposals or remarks that support plans for the deployment of foreign troops in the Gaza Strip "under any justification."

The movement said that the administration of affairs in the Gaza Strip, after the war on Gaza ends, is solely a Palestinian matter, which only the Palestinian people will determine.

Hamas stressed, "We will not allow any guardianship or the imposition of any external solutions or [plans] that detract from [the Palestinian people's] principles," which are based on their right to freedom and self-determination.

It invited all Islamic and Arab nations to press for an end to the Israeli genocidal war on the Palestinian people and to assist the besieged people of the Gaza Strip.

The statement also called upon Islamic and Arab states to "fulfill their obligations toward [the Palestinian] people, their land, and the Islamic and Christian sanctities," which have been desecrated by "fascist settler criminal gangs."

Saudi Foreign Minister remarks stir up controversy

On Thursday, the Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister, Faisal Bin Farhan, said that Riyadh would back the deployment of an international force in Gaza, via a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) decision aimed at assisting the Palestinian Authority.

Bin Farhan made the remark while participating in a panel discussion at the European Council on Foreign Relations conference in Madrid.

Talks for the deployment of forces to manage affairs in the Gaza Strip, after the war on the besieged territory ends, have long been circulating in Israeli circles and international media outlets.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also suggested that "friendly" Arab states take on the responsibility of security and cultural affairs in the Gaza Strip. Among the top candidates to complete such tasks are Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

However, there has been no official confirmation by both states on whether they are willing to participate in such a plan. The only public announcement backing the deployment of international peacekeeping forces came via the final statement of the 33rd of the Arab Summit in Bahrain.

Bin Farhan's remarks are of importance as it marks the first public support of Riyadh for the deployment of international forces in the Gaza Strip.

PFLP, Popular Resistance Committees warn against international forces plot

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) also put out a statement condemning the remarks of the Saudi foreign minister, reiterating the Palestinian people's indisputable right to self-determination.

The PFLP expressed its "outright rejection" of the remarks, adding that any attempt to deploy troops, whether via an international decision or not, would constitute a new occupation of the Gaza Strip.

It stressed that Resistance fighters will confront any foreign plot to undermine the Palestinian people.

Moreover, the Popular Resistance Committees affirmed positions similar to those expressed by Hamas and the PFLP, underlining that such a move would constitute an aggression against the Palestinian people.

It emphasized that it would deal with such foreign troops the way it dealt with Israeli occupation forces.

38,153 killed, 87,828 injured

The Israeli occupation's aggression on Gaza is claiming an ever-rising number of Palestinian lives as the situation is exacerbated by Israeli criminality and the worsening humanitarian situation.

On day 275 of the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the number of Palestinians killed by the Israeli occupation in Gaza on Sunday reached 38,153, in addition to 87,828 injuries, according to the daily report published by the Health Ministry in Gaza.

"Israel" committed three massacres in 24 hours, killing 55 Palestinians and injuring 123 others.

While some were transported to partially functioning hospitals, many victims remain trapped beneath the rubble with rescue crews unable to reach them.
Others remain either injured or lie there as lifeless bodies dispersed on the streets as rescue crews are also prohibited from attending to them or transporting them.

A renewed series of sporadic attacks were carried out by the Israeli occupation on the 275th day of its ongoing aggression on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported.

Five journalists were among those killed in the occupation's recent attacks in Gaza City and al-Nusairat camp within 12 hours on Saturday.

New Israeli massacres

Israeli occupation forces committed on Saturday a new massacre in the Nuseirat refugee camp, in the central Gaza Strip, targeting a school belonging to the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) that was sheltering displaced people, the Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed.

The Gaza Government Media Office announced that this is the 43rd massacre that the Israeli occupation forces committed in the Nuseirat camp, which resulted in the killing of 16 Palestinians and the injury of 75 others, who were transported to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

The Media Office mentioned that the Israeli occupation warplanes bombed the al-Jaouni school on Saturday afternoon, highlighting that the school was sheltering around 7,000 displaced people.

In a statement, the Media Office condemned the latest Israeli massacre, recalling that the Israeli occupation has bombed more than 17 schools and displacement centers in the Nuseirat refugee camp since the beginning of the genocide in Gaza.

It called on the international community and all UN and international organizations to put pressure on the occupation to stop the genocide and halt the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip.

An exacerbated catastrophe

Touching on the humanitarian crisis in the central region of the Gaza Strip, the statement confirmed that only two hospitals are operational there, yet they are unable to provide health and medical services due to severe overcrowding and the numerous injuries they have received over the past months.

Elsewhere, the Office stressed that major challenges face humanitarian and health work in the Nuseirat refugee camp and Gaza's central governorate due to the ongoing genocide.

On its part, Hamas affirmed that the repeated and systematic targeting of UNRWA schools and displacement centers, as well as the perpetration of massacres, represents the Israeli occupation government's insistence on defying all laws put in place to protect civilians.

In a statement, the movement called on the international community and the United Nations and its institutions to take immediate action to stop these violations and ongoing war crimes and to implement effective measures to halt the Israeli killing machine against the Palestinian people.

The Lancet estimates:
Israel killed up to 186,000 Palestinians
A report published by The Lancet predicts that over 186,000 Palestinians may be killed, either directly or indirectly, by the ongoing Israeli occupation's war on Palestine's Gaza Strip, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid

A study by the British scientific journal The Lancet, a weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal, predicts that the number of martyrs killed during the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, both directly and indirectly, will exceed 186,000.

The journal based this estimate on the consideration that armed conflicts have indirect health effects that extend beyond the direct harm caused by violence.

The journal then explained that "Even if the conflict were to end immediately, many indirect deaths will continue to be recorded in the coming months and years due to causes such as reproductive diseases, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases."

Additionally, it noted that "The total number of deaths is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict, the devastated healthcare infrastructure, the severe shortage of food, water, and shelter, the inability of the population to move to safe places, and the loss of funding for UNRWA."

The British journal emphasized that "in recent conflicts, the number of indirect deaths has ranged from 3 to 15 times the number of direct deaths," adding "If we apply a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths for every direct death, we will find that this figure is much higher than the number of direct deaths."

Given the more than 37,000 reported deaths in Gaza, it is not surprising to estimate that up to 186,000 or even more deaths could be recorded in Gaza, the British journal stressed.

It added that using the estimated population of the Gaza Strip for 2022, which is 2,375,259 people, would translate to 7.9% of the total population in the sector.

Furthermore, The Lancet emphasized that an immediate and urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is necessary, "accompanied by measures to enable the distribution of medical supplies, food, clean water, and other resources to meet basic humanitarian needs."

It stressed the there is a "need to record the scale and nature of suffering in this conflict," and added that "Documenting the true scale is crucial for ensuring historical accountability and acknowledging the full cost of the war. "

Massacres at Khan Younis school

The Israeli occupation has committed yet another massacre, targeting displaced women and children seeking shelter in a school and makeshift tents in Khan Younis

The Israeli occupation has committed another horrific massacre in Absan, Khan Younis, in relentless bombings targeting the tents of displaced Palestinians, mostly inhabited by children and women, killing tens of martyrs in the process.

During the hours of Tuesday evening, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) massacred Palestinians staying in tents and the Al-Awda school, which shelters thousands of displaced civilians.

Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Gaza reported 27 martyrs, most of whom were children, arriving at the Nasser Hospital.

The Gaza Media Office then stated that the massacre against the school in Abasan, east of Khan Younis, killed 29 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

It further asserted that the massacres committed by "Israel" are continuously renewed, with the latest coming after six massacres, which collectively killed at least 60 Palestinians within a few hours, most of whom are women and children.

Gaza's Media Office also stressed that the massacres coincide with "Israel's" deliberate destruction of the health system in the Strip, the constant attacks on hospitals and medical centers, amid the intense pressure the medical teams in Gaza are facing due to the diminishing number of operation rooms and the absence of the required supplies, with respect to the increasing number of injuries.

The Israeli bombing also targeted central Gaza, killing more Palestinians and injuring others. Five martyrs, including children, arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, as a result of the occupation’s air force targeting a Palestinian house in the city.

Our correspondent reported that Israeli artillery shelling targeted the west of a new camp, north of the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, while the occupation aircraft targeted the upper level of a residential building on al-Wahda Street.

A study by the British scientific journal The Lancet, a weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal, predicts that the number of martyrs killed during the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, both directly and indirectly, will have exceeded 186,000.
