Rudaw campaign to help quake-hit city collects $270k, tons in supplies

A campaign announced by Rudaw Media Network to help the quake-hit city of Darbandikhan has concluded on Wednesday, collecting $270,000 as well as other desperately needed materials. :ymapplause:

Rudawi Darbandikhan, the official name of the campaign, began just over two weeks ago to meet some of the needs of the affected people.

The local government in Darbandikhan, south of Sulaimani, has formed a 17-membered team from the city to oversee the delivery of the aid collected by Rudaw. The donations also include building materials such as 4,000 tons of cement in addition to tents, medicine, and kerosene heaters.

“Fortunately the investors responded positively to the campaign. It was as we expected them to be,” Aso Sarawi, a Rudaw producer said.

Kurdish businessmen and investors donated to the fundraising event, as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Iraq’s Minister of Health Adila Hamud told Rudaw it was supportive of the campaign.

The donations are to be distributed in the city starting from Thursday.

Zana Bahadin, the acting mayor of Darbandikhan, told Rudaw on Thursday that the donations may cover “50 percent of the needs” of the affected people.

Five hundred houses in the city were damaged by the November earthquake, 435 of which are not deemed safe for residents, and five houses were completely destroyed, according to official figures.

The earthquake that hit wide areas across the Kurdistan Region and Iran borders in early November killed 10 people, and injured about 500 more in the Kurdistan Region.

Some of the people continue to live in tents despite the cold winter weather mainly because their houses have been damaged, but also because some refuse to go back to their homes for fear of a second earthquake.

There have been a great many aftershocks - some powerful - making already damaged buildings even more unstable

5.1 earthquake hits Iran’s western province of Kermanshah, hurting 21

An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Sarpole Zahab in the western province of Kermanshah injuring 21 people.

The earthquake hit Sarpole Zahab at 6:22 p.m. on Saturday evening with five more aftershocks ranging from 2.7 to 5.1 between 6:52 and 9:09 p.m. as reported by state-run IRNA on Sunday.

Sarpole Zahab was the hardest hit area of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake which struck the Iraq-Iran border the evening of November 12, 2017 which left 620 dead and over 12,000 wounded in Iran.

Since the November 12 earthquake, 1,600 aftershocks have been recorded in Kermanshah.

Ten cities and 1930 villages were affected across the province and poor quality construction of low-income housing in the Kurdish majority community is being blamed for the high death toll.

Across the border in the Kurdistan Region, ten people were killed and over 500 injured, with Darbandikhan being the most affected area.

Massive damage to private and public property was also reported in the Kurdistan Region by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) teams in Sulaimani, including Darbandikhan dam along with the Halabja hospital and the Sulaimani hospital.

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the evening of November 12 was the deadliest of 2017.

I must remind you all that though these and the many other quakes, which take place several time a day, are fairly minor the border area in which they take place has not fully recovered. The people living in this area are still without permanent shelter and a tent is no match for the deep, freezing snow of winter.

The rest of the world moves onto the next disaster - we must NOT

Several minor earthquakes today

Only 3 of them stronger than 4 but many minor tremors

The fact that there are still having quakes around 4 means that the buildings are still unsafe

Does anyone know of any TRUSTWORTHY organization people could send donations to ?

Cold winter in Eastern (Iranian) Kurdistan deadly for homeless quake survivors

News media from Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat) reported on Sunday (January 28) that five children and a 17-year-old girl have died of cold and sickness in the last two months in areas affected by the strong earthquake.

The children aged between four month old to five years old most of whom live in the village of Nawafar in the Iranian-Kurdish town of Sar Peli Zahaw was the worst hit in the quake.

The homeless people and families of the dead, whose houses were demolished after the 7.3 magnitude earthquake, still live in tent in sub-zero temperatures nearby the border between Iran and Iraq.

They said that there is lack of humanitarian aid and medicines have run short; fearing that the number of civilian casualties will keep rising.

On November 12, the Iranian Kurdistan area was hit by a major 7.3-magnitude quake that killed 620 people and injured over 7000, according to the latest toll provided by Tasnim news agency. Al Jazeera reports that 70,000 persons were left homeless.

The area is known for regular quake activity. In 1990, a 7.4-magnitude quake in northern Iran killed 40,000 people, injured 300,000 and left half a million homeless, reducing dozens of towns and nearly 2,000 villages to rubble.

Thirteen years later, a catastrophic quake flattened swathes of the ancient southeastern Iranian city of Bam, killing at least 31,000.

Iran has experienced at least two major quake disasters since, with more than 600 people killed in 2005 and a further 300 in a 2012 quake.
