Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Strikes Duhok

ERBIL — An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale rattled the province of Duhok in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday, as reported by the Iraqi Ministry of Transport

The seismic event occurred at 6:09 am (local time), originating five kilometers from Duhok. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage, according to a statement from the Seismological Monitoring unit at the Iraqi Ministry of Transport.

The statement assured that residents within the city limits did not experience any movement causing fear. It also highlighted that, despite around 30 earthquakes in the area over the past two months, none resulted in significant damage.

This recent earthquake follows a series of seismic activities in Duhok and Kirkuk in September of the previous year. The most potent recorded a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale. The region experienced a sequence of tremors, starting with a 3.1 magnitude earthquake near the Kurdistan Region-Turkish border, located 33 kilometers from Duhok. Subsequently, a 4.6 magnitude tremor occurred in the same area six minutes later. Between these two incidents in Duhok province, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Kirkuk province.
