US occupation cannot persist

In its statement, Syria's military emphasizes that the US is working on reviving ISIS in Syria and Iraq
(would not surprise me, US bases in Syria are illegal, US is stealing Syrian oil)

A Syrian military statement addressed the aerial aggression launched by the US occupation forces on sites and towns in the eastern region of Syria and near the border with Iraq.

The statement revealed that the aggression led to the killing of several civilians and soldiers, injuring others, as well as causing significant material damage. It also stressed that the targeted area in eastern Syria is the same one in which Syria has been fighting ISIS, emphasizing that the United States is working on reviving ISIS as its field arm in Syria and Iraq by "all dirty means."

The statement also affirmed that the Syrian army will continue to defend Syria's land and people, and strike all terrorist groups, regardless of how much their sponsors and supporters try to obstruct this goal. It added that it is determined to liberate the entire Syrian territory from all terrorism and occupation, including the US occupation which "cannot persist."

Al Mayadeen’s correspondent in Aleppo reported that the US aggression lasted approximately 40 minutes at dawn today, and was carried out by aircraft and war bombers, targeting approximately 20 sites in Deir Ezzor, al-Harabesh, the city of al-Mayadin, and al-Bukamal in eastern Syria.

He confirmed that most of the targeted areas were evacuated before the attack; however, the aggression targeted civilian facilities, including bakeries, food warehouses, and libraries.

Yesterday, the US Central Command announced the targeting of sites belonging to the IRGC and its allies in Iraq and Syria as a response to the killing of three US occupation troops, and the wounding of 40 soldiers in a drone attack last week that targeted a US occupation base.

US targeted Syria, Iraq

US airstrikes had earlier targeted military sites near Ain Ali, south of the city of Al Mayadin in the countryside of Deir Ezzor, Syria.

CENTCOM revealed that US forces struck more than 85 targets in Iraq and Syria with numerous aircraft, including long-range bombers that were said to have taken off from the United States.

Iraq should be cleansed from foreign presence

Falah al-Fayyad speaks during the funeral procession of the 16 martyrs killed in the US aggression, vowing that the crime will not pass heedlessly

Describing the attack as "blatantly rude", Al-Fayyad vowed that they "will not pass heedlessly." The Iraqi Resistance leader stressed that the "blood of the Popular Mobilization Front's martyrs" represents "the dignity and honor of Iraq."

The PMF's chief revealed that the recent aggression is one that "directly targeted" the PMF, which marks a clear escalation.

Iraqi PMF Chief Faleh al-Fayyad: "This incident will not pass heedlessly, as it represents a blatantly rude assault, and the blood of PMF martyrs symbolizes the [elevated] status and dignity of #Iraq." https://t.co/QW9vivuF8Q
    — Al Mayadeen English (@MayadeenEnglish) February 4, 2024
He emphasized that the force "will not [let] the blood of its sons be a cheap political commodity," as he urged the Iraqi Parliament and political forces to take a clear stance against the aggression, which "crossed red lines."

In this context, al-Fayyad highlighted the necessity of "cleansing" Iraq from all foreign military presence.

It is worth mentioning that the PMF is a military group mainly relying on the Iraqi citizens who took on the responsibility of fighting rapidly spreading terrorism in the region. The PMF act under the jurisdiction of the Iraqi government, therefore holding an official governmental status.

No negotiating

The president of the We Build Alliance and the Secretary-General of the Badr Organization in Iraq, Hadi al-Amiri, stated that the alliance does not "believe in negotiations" and called for the "immediate withdrawal" of US forces from Iraq. He added that the US mobilizes terror cells in the country as it pleases.

It is worth noting that the We Build parliamentary alliance was formed to include representatives of the most prominent Iraqi Resistance factions.

On Saturday, the Iraqi government's PMF affirmed their readiness to carry out any orders from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to preserve Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The PMF's remarks come in the wake of a US aggression on Iraq and Syria late Friday, which resulted in the martyrdom of 16 people in Iraq, including Iraqi soldiers and civilians, in addition to significant material damage.

On his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced three days of mourning in all government departments and institutions on Saturday in commemoration of those murdered in US airstrikes in western Iraq.

According to a statement by the government of Iraq on social media, the Prime Minister announced mourning "across all state departments and institutions... in honor of the souls of the martyrs from our armed forces and the civilians who lost their lives due to the American bombing."

US Killed Senior Militia Leader

“At 9:30 p.m. February 7, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted a unilateral strike in Iraq in response to the attacks on U.S. service members, killing a Kata’ib Hezbollah commander responsible for directly planning and participating in attacks on U.S. forces in the region,” CENTCOM said in a statement

“There are no indications of collateral damage or civilian casualties at this time,” the statement added. “The United States will continue to take necessary action to protect our people. We will not hesitate to hold responsible all those who threaten our forces’ safety.”

According to security sources, on Wednesday night, a drone strike aimed at a vehicle in Baghdad resulted in the deaths of at least two militia leaders. The attack occurred after a sequence of loud explosions was heard across different areas of the city.

Reports suggest that a drone launched three rockets at a 4X4 vehicle in eastern Baghdad, particularly in the Mashtal neighborhood. Another anonymous source claimed that the targeted vehicle belonged to an official affiliated with Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition mainly consisting of pro-Iran paramilitaries now integrated into Iraq's regular security forces.

However, conflicting reports arose regarding the number of casualties, with one source stating that three individuals were killed in the attack. The vehicle, purportedly used by the pro-Iran Hashd al-Shaabi, was the primary target of the strike.

The deceased were identified as Abu Baqir al-Saadi and Haj Arkan Aliawi, leaders of Kataib Hezbollah.

Iraqi security forces have closed all roads leading to the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad as Telegram channels linked to Iranian media have called on Iraqis to march towards the US embassy in the capital city.

The drone attack occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions in Iraq, marked by retaliatory strikes between extremist Iran-backed armed factions and US forces deployed in the country since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October.

Withdrawal of US Coalition

Iraq's Federal Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief, Yahya Rassoul, announced on Thursday evening that measures to expedite the withdrawal of international Coalition forces from Iraq had been initiated

Rassoul stated that decisive actions would be taken in the upcoming days to terminate the presence of these forces. Additionally, he emphasized plans to establish bilateral agreements with several countries to equip and train Iraqi forces, noting the willingness of many nations to engage in such agreements.

Tensions have escalated as Iran-backed militias launched over 170 aerial attacks on US bases and personnel in Iraq and Syria, citing the United States' support for Israel during the Gaza War.

In response, the US conducted multiple retaliatory strikes on Iran-backed militias and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in Iraq and Syria, targeting key commanders and logistical centers.

These actions on Iraqi soil have sparked outrage from the Iraqi government, which asserts that the US is violating Iraq's sovereignty and destabilizing the region. Consequently, Iraq is pursuing measures through its parliament and state apparatuses to compel the Coalition to withdraw from the country.

Iraqi Militia Attacks on US Forces

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has announced its decision to resume attacks on United States forces and positions in Iraq, in response to the killing of Abu Bakr al-Saadi, a senior militia commander

This move marks a resurgence in hostilities after a temporary suspension following previous incidents.

The decision to resume the attacks was made in the wake of the targeted killing of Abu Bakr al-Saadi prompted the Islamic Resistance in Iraq to call for intensified actions against US military presence in the region. Senior militia commanders in Baghdad have reportedly agreed to retaliate against the assassination, signaling a unified stance among various armed groups.

Heightened tensions have been observed in Baghdad, as US drones have been spotted flying at low altitudes over the city in recent days. This surveillance activity has raised concerns among militia leaders, with fears of potential airstrikes targeting them. The presence of US drones has noticeably restricted the movements of militia groups and their leaders, as they anticipate potential attacks.

Iraqi political analyst Mohannad Janabi characterized the current situation as indicative of Iraq's transition into an "unorganized war," emphasizing the escalating conflict between local militias and US forces. Janabi further underscored the ramifications of this development, warning of its adverse impact on stability in the region.

The resurgence of attacks by the militia group comes after a temporary halt in hostilities following the United States' vow to retaliate for the deaths of three soldiers in attacks on a US base in Jordan on January 30. The suspension of attacks by Iraqi Hezbollah militias was in response to this declaration, reflecting a temporary de-escalation in tensions prior to the recent developments.

The United States has yet to respond to the recent escalation, but observers fear that further military actions could exacerbate the already volatile situation in Iraq.

Why US should leave Syria

A commentary on War on the Rocks discusses the US deviation from its main goal in fighting ISIS and what it can allegedly go back to its claimed goal

A Commentary by Thanassis Cambanis on War on the Rocks titled "Leave Syria, Keep Fighting the Islamic State" sheds light on how the daily attacks from the Axis of Resistance have made life hell for the US troops in Syria and Iraq. It mentions how last month's attack is a clear reminder of the dangers with three service personnel dying.

The commentary states that even though the United States has had years to plan a well-organized withdrawal, it has not done so yet. It's currently a matter of months or at best a year, before the United States exits from Syria instead of keeping its troops' lives at constant risk. It further explains that the latter is tied to the results of the upcoming elections as if Donald Trump wins, it's possible he would proceed with his October 2019 effort of stopping the Syria mission. On the other hand, if Biden wins the commentator believes that "although he’s sleepwalking the United States deeper into a regional war," would have to weigh the constant loss of US lives as he does not want it.

The key is fighting terrorism as a main focus

It urged the US government and its allies to prioritize the main objective that allegedly brought US troops to Syria in the first place: the Islamic State. On one hand, some alarmists and supporters of an open-ended US presence have deceitfully alleged that the Islamic State is "as strong as ever." On the other hand, others, including the Iraqi government, have excessively dismissed the possibility of the presence of the exaggerated number of "50,000 committed terrorists" in al-Hol ever causing problems again.

It further stressed the United States to come to terms with its real priorities and "make the hard tradeoffs," stressing that the American forces are in Syria and Iraq for a purpose different than fighting Iran, and it is countering the Islamic State(ISIS). Hence, it’s time for the United States to stop all other points pulling it into "unwinnable local conflicts" and instead direct all of its energy toward fighting terrorism.

The commentary suggested the United States should work in parallel with Syria which wants to avoid the emergence of the Islamic State and negotiate a well-trusted plan for its government to have control over detention centers where ISIS members are held noting that the US already plans for an organized withdrawal from northeast Syria and a smaller presence in Iraq.

As for Iraq, the commentary stated, that the United States should be open to taking "a hit to its prestige" by shrinking its military presence, in return for proceeding with intelligence and counter-terrorism cooperation with "security forces in federal Iraq as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government," adding that "The United States no longer occupies Iraq, and Iraq’s government includes a bevy of problematic militant factions." This means that Washington should be ready to make a deal declaring Iraq’s sovereignty rather than risk losing a crucial partner.

Further emphasizing the commentary highlighted that even though the United States does not possess any leverage to control either Syria or Iraq, it shares some common goals with them, and at least with Iraq, "a desire for a deep continuing security partnership." So, a lower arrangement can still effectively fight the Islamic State and possibly even eliminate many of the trigger points that "keep pulling the United States into a regional war."

The commentary ends by stressing that if the US is "willing to swallow the hit to American prestige" on one hand and work on its relationship with Iraq, on the other then it can possibly protect its alleged core mission while shrinking the US military presence in the Middle East.

US withdrawal from Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani says his trip to Washington will cover various issues, including the Israeli war on Gaza and an end to the international coalition's mission in Iraq

On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated that he plans to discuss with US President Joe Biden the significance of de-escalating the situation in the Gaza Strip and ending the war to prevent its escalation across the region.

Before leaving Baghdad for Washington, al-Sudani emphasized that his visit is at a critical and sensitive juncture for bilateral relations and the region. He stressed that the purpose of his visit is to enhance relations, including the implementation of the provisions outlined in the Strategic Framework Agreement.

The agreement, signed in 2008, outlines the development of close cooperation on security and defense matters while respecting Iraqi sovereignty.

He emphasized that he would discuss with Biden the joint US-Iraqi Supreme Military Committee's operations, aiming to establish a timeline for ending the coalition's mission in Iraq. Subsequently, the discussions will focus on bilateral relations with coalition countries.

Two days ago, al-Sudani announced that the joint US-Iraqi Supreme Military Committee has agreed to end the international coalition's mission according to a timetable.

"We consider a comprehensive de-escalation in the Middle East to be in both Iraqi and US interests. That requires, above all, urgently ending the war in the Gaza Strip and respecting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people," he said in an article for Foreign Affairs
"We believe the time is right for our relationship to become broader, recognizing the growing capabilities of our forces to defend Iraq and ensure the safety of its citizens," he said, alluding to ending foreign intervention in Iraq's security and military.

US coalition’s Iraq withdrawal

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met with top US Department of Defense officials in Baghdad on Monday to discuss bilateral defense relations, including the withdrawal of global coalition forces from the country

“The meeting discussed the procedures for ending the mission of the Global Coalition Against Daesh and strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States,” read a statement from Sudani’s office, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State (ISIS).

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Policy Daniel Shapiro headed a security delegation, accompanied by US Ambassador to Baghdad Alina Romanowski.

The two sides also discussed security threats facing Iraq and efforts to address them, according to the PM’s office.

Romanowski said on X that both Sudani and Shapiro discussed “expanding the U.S.-Iraq bilateral defense relationship and our joint efforts to address persistent security threats to the U.S., Iraq, and the region.”

Baghdad is engaged in talks with the US-led coalition against ISIS to wind down the mission and end the presence of foreign troops in Iraq.

In January, Sudani presided over the first meeting of the US-Iraq Higher Military Commission (HMC) to discuss the future of the coalition’s mission in Iraq.

The US-Iraq HMC have held several meetings in Baghdad to “discuss the threat of ISIS, the operational environment, and the capabilities of the Iraqi Security Forces.” The Iraqi government had expressed anger over US retaliatory strikes on pro-Iran, Iraqi paramilitary groups.

Hardline Shiite politicians have called for Baghdad to expel US troops from Iraq, even prior to mounting tensions over the US supporting Israel in its war on Gaza.

The US strikes were in response to hundreds of rockets and drone strikes since last October, targeting US installations and troops in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan.

Despite the rounds of meetings, the Pentagon said in February that Washington and Baghdad have not set any timelines for US force changes in Iraq.

In January, Iraqi government spokesperson Basem al-Awadi told state media that the end of the coalition’s mission in Iraq “will be achieved during the current cabinet.”

Baghdad has said the commission’s aim is to bring an end to the presence of the coalition forces in the country, while Washington has described the step as a “transition” in the coalition’s role.

The US security relationship with Iraq fully transitioned into an advise and assist role in December 2021, triggered by Baghdad's anger over US actions that the Iraqi government deemed a violation of its sovereignty - most notably the assassination of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and deputy chief of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in Baghdad in early 2020.

Around 2,500 US troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria are leading an international coalition through Operation Inherent Resolve that has assisted Kurdish, Iraqi, and local Syrian forces in the fight against ISIS, which once held swathes of land in Iraq and Syria but was declared territorially defeated in 2019. The group remains a security threat, carrying out attacks on military targets and civilians on both sides of the border.

US troop withdrawal delayed

Iraq’s foreign ministry on Thursday said they have reached an agreement with Washington on the withdrawal of American troops, but that the announcement was delayed because of recent “developments,” a day after a United States official said they have not had discussions with the Iraqi government about withdrawing troops

Discussions between Baghdad and Washington “included details that included the hierarchy of advisors’ withdrawal from the sites,” the foreign ministry said in an announcement on X. “All that remained was to agree on the details and date of the announcement and some other logistical aspects.”

The ministry noted that the announcement was delayed due to recent “developments” in the region, but did not go into detail.

The US has around 2,500 soldiers stationed in Iraq as part of a global coalition combating the Islamic State [ISIS]. Iraqi militia groups aligned with Iran have repeatedly called for the withdrawal of the troops and carried out dozens of attacks on US forces based in Iraq and Syria. Washington has responded with airstrikes.

In January, a US-Iraq Higher Military Commission had its first meeting to discuss the future of the US-led coalition mission in Iraq. While Baghdad has maintained that the aim of the commission is to end the presence of coalition forces in the country, Washington has described the step only as a “transition” in the coalition’s role.

On Wednesday, a US state department official said a withdrawal has not been discussed. “At no point did we discuss the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, but we continued to discuss a - the transition to a - what we would say a bilateral security partnership,” deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said in a press conference.

In late July, a delegation of Iraqi defense and Peshmerga officials and their US counterparts concluded a two-day meeting at the Pentagon, reaching an understanding on a “new phase of the bilateral security relationship.”

The Iraqi foreign ministry statement said that their relations with the US are separate from the international coalition forces and that it “existed before the alliance and will continue after it.”

US, Iraq Agree on Troop Withdrawal

The United States and Iraq have reached an agreement for the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from Iraq, according to Reuters

The plan proposes that hundreds of troops will leave by September 2025, with the remaining forces set to depart by the end of 2026. An announcement was delayed due to regional tensions linked to Israel's war in Gaza. The agreement comes after months of talks initiated by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, aiming to redefine US-Iraq relations post-withdrawal.

Sources suggest that the deal could be announced this month, although final approvals from both capitals are still pending. The US and Iraq are also exploring the possibility of establishing a new advisory relationship, which might allow some US troops to remain in a non-combat capacity.

Farhad Alaaldin, adviser to the Iraqi Prime Minister, confirmed that technical discussions with Washington on the coalition's drawdown had concluded, and the focus is now on transitioning to enhanced bilateral relations in military, security, economic, and cultural sectors.

The drawdown follows a series of attacks by Iran-backed Iraqi armed groups on US forces in Iraq, prompting the initiation of the withdrawal talks earlier this year. Further details about the agreement have not been disclosed as the US-led coalition has yet to comment officially.

War between SDF militias, Arab tribes

Currently, the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor is witnessing relative calm between SDF militias and Arab tribal and clan fighters

Clashes broke out for the first time between SDF militias and Arab tribal and clan fighters led by Ibrahim al-Hafel in September 2023.

This is due to the SDF militia’s arrest of Ahmed al-Khubail, the leader of its Deir Ezzor Military Council, which includes Arab fighters from the governorate
The SDF militias also carried out searches and raids against some of the wives of the leaders of the Deir Ezzor Military Council and some members of the al-Akidat tribe (one of the most important and largest tribes in the region).

This was considered by the tribes as targeting Arabs

However, due to the large difference in military power, the SDF was able to stop the attack by Ibrahim al-Hafel’s forces.

On August 7 this year, clashes renewed. Arab tribal forces attacked SDF positions in Deir Ezzor, and the leader of the forces, Ibrahim al-Hafel, said in a statement, “The tribal army will not leave its weapons and land until it is liberated and cleansed of Qandil gangs," in reference to the Kurdistan Workers Party.

Once again, the SDF militias were able to regain villages in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor after bringing in huge military reinforcements and receiving support from the US-led international coalition aircraft to avoid the expansion of battles toward the American bases of the Conoco gas plant and the al-Omar field.

Meanwhile, the SDF militias besieged thousands of civilians in the Syrian government-controlled areas in al-Hasakah and Qamishli, cut off roads, and prevented the entry of food and water to them
The matter was not resolved except after Russian mediation conducted by Andrei Serdikov, the commander of the Russian forces in Syria, who arrived in al-Hasakah twice within four days and met with the commander of the SDF militias Mazloum Abdi, with whom it was agreed to "return things to what they were before the siege and [highlighted] the necessity of maintaining stability and avoiding any field escalation."

Currently, the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor is witnessing relative calm in general, disturbed by the killing of the commander of the al-Bukamal Brigade in the Tribal Army, Muhammad Hussein al-Awaid, known as Abu Saddam al-Hassouni and nicknamed al-Kosoufi, after he was targeted by unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle in front of his house, near the al-Yarmouk School in the city of al-Bukamal.

On the other hand, SDF militias began digging trenches and raising dirt barriers along the line separating them from the Syrian army.

This comes days after the international coalition built 142 observation towers in the area opposite the al-Bukamal-al-Mayadin road, on the Damascus-Baghdad line, brought in additional convoys of ground and air reinforcements, and carried out live ammunition maneuvers. Four of them were in Deir Ezzor and one was in al-Hasakah

SDF militias also launched a campaign of raids targeting the homes of people they accused of belonging to the Tribal Army, blowing up some of them in an attempt to intimidate the population and prevent them from even thinking about joining any activity related to the tribes in the future.

They also prompted groups of their supporters to organize protest stops in a number of cities and towns in the Deir Ezzor countryside, issuing statements on behalf of the tribes, denouncing the recent attacks and considering them a “threat to security and stability.”

According to opposition press sources, the international coalition forces have begun training SDF militia members on the “Avenger” air defense system, which is considered somewhat old compared to the modern air defense systems possessed by the coalition countries. According to these sources, it is likely that the SDF militias will be provided with this system after completing exercises.

The coalition had brought a number of these systems from northern Iraq through the al-Walid crossing in the al-Hasakah countryside to the Kharab al-Jir airport base, and then they were distributed to several coalition bases, including the al-Shaddadi base, south of al-Hasakah, and the bases of the al-Omar field and the Conoco gas plant in the Deir Ezzor countryside.

Illegal US-Led Coalition Base in
    Baghdad Airport Targeted
Iraqi security forces reported an explosion at a US-led coalition military base located at Baghdad International Airport late Tuesday, just a day before Iran’s president was scheduled to visit

“At 11:00 PM (2000 GMT), an explosion was heard within the area of Baghdad International Airport where international coalition advisors are stationed,” stated Iraqi Major General Tahseen Al Khafaji, spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, in a post on the social media platform X.

According to the statement, which was also released by the state news agency INA, Iraqi security forces were unable to identify the source of the blast, and no group has claimed responsibility.

The explosion did not disrupt air traffic or flight schedules.

A senior military official, speaking anonymously, told AFP that the explosion was caused by “two Katyusha-type rockets.”

One of the rockets struck the perimeter wall of an Iraqi anti-terrorist forces compound, while the other landed inside the base hosting the US-led anti-Islamic State coalition.

The explosion occurred ahead of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s scheduled arrival in Iraq on Wednesday for his first foreign visit since taking office in July.

Over the past two decades, relations between Iraq and Iran, both Shiite-majority nations, have strengthened.

Tehran has become one of Iraq’s top trading partners and holds significant political influence in Baghdad, where its allies control parliament and the government.

US to Announce Troop Withdrawal

An announcement about the US troop withdrawal from Iraq could be made as early as next week, according to US media reports

Politico, citing two Biden administration officials, stated that negotiations between the US and Iraq over the withdrawal of 2,500 troops by 2026 are nearing completion.

A senior Pentagon official noted that while Islamic State has been significantly defeated, especially territorially, efforts to ensure its lasting defeat must continue, as the threat remains.

However, the planned troop reduction has sparked concerns in Congress. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., chair of the House Armed Services Committee, expressed frustration, warning that the move could strengthen both ISIS militants and Iran.

He argued that the withdrawal offers “no strategic military advantage” and could undermine US national security.

On the Iraqi side, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and Defense Minister Thabit al-Abbasi have voiced support for the plan, asserting that Iraq is now stable enough to manage without a large US military presence.

They emphasized that the situation in Iraq has shifted from conflict to stability, reducing the need for foreign forces.

The report also highlights that the transition to a “sustainable security partnership” is intended to allow Iraq to address remaining threats with minimal direct US involvement.

UK Announces End of strikes in Iraq and Syria

The United Kingdom Defense Ministry has announced that British jets will cease strike operations over Iraq and Syria following the conclusion of the Global Coalition’s military mission against Islamic State militants, which is expected to end within the next 12 months

Over the past decade, the Royal Air Force (RAF) has carried out more than 10,000 sorties, targeting over 1,400 locations in both Iraq and Syria as part of Operation Shader
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence expressed gratitude for the professionalism of UK personnel involved in the Global Coalition.

"Thanks to the bravery and effectiveness of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), Peshmerga, and the coalition's ongoing commitment, Daesh has been territorially defeated in Iraq. The ISF has facilitated the restoration of essential services for communities and the rehabilitation of conflict-affected areas," the statement read.

"With these core objectives achieved, we can begin transitioning to new security arrangements under Iraqi leadership. Working alongside our global coalition partners, the UK remains dedicated to ensuring the global defeat of Daesh and its violent ideology. Our commitment to the security of Iraq and the wider region is steadfast, and we aim to develop a bilateral relationship that promotes long-term stability in Iraq," the UK military added.

The conclusion of the Coalition’s mission marks a shift toward new security frameworks under Iraqi leadership.

The UK’s role in Operation Inherent Resolve has included training and assisting over 111,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, including 21,000 Peshmerga officers, in crucial skills such as counter-IED tactics, weapons maintenance, and medical training.

While RAF strike operations will come to an end, the UK will continue collaborating with Iraq to ensure lasting stability and security in the region. This mission, initiated in 2014, has been part of a broader Global Coalition Against Islamic State, which consists of 87 international partners dedicated to defeating the terrorist organization.
