Hundreds of Participants join Marathon
The 11th International Erbil Marathon was held on Friday, with hundreds of local and international participants joining the event to promote athleticism and environmental awareness
Abdulsattar Younis, head of the Erbil Marathon Organization, told Kurdistan 24 that athletes, enthusiasts, and Iraqi champions from various cities participated in the event. “This marathon aims to raise awareness about preserving a clean environment in Erbil,” he stated.
Supervised by 50 referees, 500 runners competed in the 21-kilometer race held around Sami Abdulrahman Park. The top five finishers are set to receive cash prizes, while all participants will be awarded medals for their efforts.
The Erbil International Marathon typically takes place at the end of November each year, attracting thousands of runners. This year's event was postponed to December due to the Kurdistan Region's elections.
The marathon has grown into a prominent sporting event in the Region, encouraging not only athletic participation but also fostering a sense of community and environmental responsibility.
