The news made my day. Iraq is 4th. Hopefully they'll stay there and won't go through to the world cup.

They will not go through and even if they do , they just end up embaressing themselves . I do not get it , even with all the money in the world the arab countries does not have one decent team . I guess it is genetics :-D

I don't know about you guys, but I will always cheer for iraq football team, unless it's against Kurdistan. I hope they make the WC, it would be a great accomplishment.

Talsor, it's not about money. Middle east countries just don't have the system and no one cares about academies. In Europe they start at age 5, so they get plenty of training even at a young age. Look at all the Kurds,Turks and arabs that make it to big europena clubs, they would never be that good in their own countries.

I understand kurdistani1, if you had to choose between iran and iraq what team would you cheer for? The team with kurdish players and the are kurdish footboll players in iraq right? Like Hawar but are there any more kurdish players? Even if these kurds don't play for kurdistan which i'm sure they would have liked to, they are still kurds.

I do not think it is about the system only . Middle east are football fanatics too and majority of them play football at a very early age . Now if you bring 11 kids from street in barzil and make them play 11 kid from Iraq or KSA who do you think is going to win :-D ? Most of the countries in Europe have system in place yet the strong teams are always the same , so genetics plays a much bigger rule than you think .

Actually, Hawar is not playing anymore with iraqi team because he wasn't called upon since the last 8 months. Now they have called a talented player(Osama Rashid) which is very disappointing that he chose iraq to play with rather than Netherlands!

Heval, most middle eastern regions go into war at some point or another, resulting in a negative impact on the youth. The logic behind such a setup with two or more opposing ethnic or religious groups is not unique and has been a common tactic employed by all colonial powers. Regimes can be manipulated and brought down by supporting one group over another in accordance with the geopolitical interests of colonial parties involved.

Genetics play a huge part in it, Europeans tend to be in much better physical shape than arabs. They're stronger and much better built. But playing at a young age without any rules or instructions will not get you very far. There is no system for developing young players in the ME, so there is almost no chance of them being even close to being as good as europeans. Like ideas also said, wars also play a huge part. Families aren't going to spend money on their kids football, when they're trying to survive.

Was there any doubt that Japan would beat Iraq to begin with?

Kagawa, Honda, Nagatomo, Okazaki ...

I think the quality speaks for Japan. Minus the Kurdish players I bet Iraqi National Team would be one of the weakest in Asia, simply because of the living conditions. Iraq is more concerned about how to get Jets than how to build up their infrastructure and bring better living conditions.
