Erbil’s International Stadium
to Undergo Major Renovation
The Kurdistan Government (KRG) is set to launch a major renovation project for Erbil’s iconic Franso Hariri International Stadium in early June, following the conclusion of the Iraqi Stars League, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw announced on Sunday
Governor Khoshnaw said the project, ordered by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, has been allocated nearly 2 billion Iraqi dinars and aims to modernize the stadium to meet international standards.
Key upgrades will include replacing the pitch with hybrid turf—commonly used in world-class venues—and renovating the surrounding track in a contemporary style.
“Preparations have been finalized, and an agreement has been reached with the implementing company and supervising engineers,” Khoshnaw said in a statement, expressing his full support for the timely completion of the project.
Originally built in 1956 and renovated in 1992, the stadium was renamed after the late Kurdish politician Franso Hariri in 2001. With a capacity of over 25,000 spectators, it serves as the home ground for Erbil Sports Club and is considered the second largest stadium in Iraq.
Governor Khoshnaw described the upgrade as a significant step for sports development in the region and assured fans that the project would be delivered on schedule.
