ERBIL, July 1 (AKnews) – A conference for developing the industrial sector will be held in Erbil tomorrow in attendance of the High Economic and Industrial Commission in the Kurdistan Region, said the head of the region’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Dara Jalil Khayat said the one-day conference will be held at the Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Members will discuss the barriers and obstacles facing the investment process in the region and ways to find solutions for them.

This conference will be supervised by the region's Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and many investors, industry experts and representatives of ministers in the region are expected to participate.

Number of projects executed by foreign organizations in Kurdistan Region reaches 50

ERBIL, July 2 (AKnews) – The number of projects being executed by foreign organizations in the Kurdistan Region has reached 50, said the region's minister of planning.

Ali Sindi’s announcement came in a conference in Erbil following a meeting between the Kurdistan Regional Government and international organizations.

Sindi added: "The size of the money allocated by the government for executing these projects amounted to $844,000 (981m Dinars).

"Only $64,000 (74m Dinars) of the sum has been paid by Habitat organization for implementing these 50 projects.”

ERBIL, July 2 (AKnews) – Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani said the law for the formation and management of industrial areas should be enacted.

Barzani said: "In order to regulate the work of these companies and industrial areas, we need a law, especially the law for insurance companies."

In the meeting the decision was made to open an insurance bureau in the region to replace the general directorate of insurance companies and supervise insurance in the region.

The High Economic Commission of the Kurdistan Region, which is headed by the Prime Minister, held its 17th meeting in the presence of Deputy PM Imad Ahmed and other members to talk about economic issues and approve a number of decisions.

I hope the insurance policies they make is better than what we have in the west, where the companies rip people off and have a bunch of hidden bs they don't tell you about.

ERBIL, July 3 (AKnews) – The directorate of Diyala Water Resources said 60 percent of Alwand dam in Khanaqin town has been completed and the project will end in October.

The dam is expected to provide water for 4,000 acres of orchards and 40,000 acres of agricultural land, as well as water for drinking.

Basim Zubaidi said the aim of the construction of the dam is to store water coming from Iran as well as rainfall and floods.

The dam will also regulate water releases in summer raise the level of groundwater and prevent potential flooding from the city of Khanaqin, added the director.

Work on the dam began more than two years ago and the total cost of the project is 30.5bn IQD on a completion term of 896 days.

The dam's reservoir stores 38 million cubic meters, added Zubaidi.

ERBIL, July 3 (AKnews) – Switzerland’s leading power and automation technology group, ABB, has won orders worth about $120 million to design and build a 640 megawatt power plant for Kurdistan Region, the company has announced in a press release.
The cycle power plant will use natural gas from the region’s Khormala oil field and light fuel oil (LFO) as backup to generate electricity from gas turbines. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.

The station will feed the power into Iraq`s regional and national grid, and also supply electricity to the oil field as well.
According to the press release, there are also plans to convert the power plant into a combined cycle power plant in the future, which will increase its capacity from 640 megawatts to 1,000.
 “This power plant will be the first in the region to feed power into the 400 kV national grid through the new Erbil Center 400/132 kV air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substation”.

Since 2007, ABB has designed and built three power plants with a total capacity of 2,000 MW to supply electrical power to the regional grid in the Kurdistan region.

 “These solutions will help build critical power infrastructure in the country to serve electricity needs and strengthen grid reliability in the region,” said Brice Koch, head of the Power Systems division, “The breadth of our technology portfolio and extensive project management experience will enable us to deliver an optimized customer solution.”

ERBIL, July 4 (AKnews) – The Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Finance and Economy has decided to scrap the shared treasury and open a new treasury under the name region treasury.

Last month both Ministries of Finance in Suli and Erbil unified and this latest decision came as part of the work of the new unified ministry, according to a statement from the Finance Ministry.

The three presidencies, the region, parliament and government, ministries' offices and all of the directorates not related with the ministries will be independent in accounting terms and related to the region treasury financially, according to the statement.

ERBIL, July 4 (AKnews) – The Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Health announced that the Council of Ministers decided to pay 80 percent of the surgery costs of citizens in the region.

Health Minister Rekawt Hamarashid said in a press conference that the Council of Ministers decided to practice surgeries in public hospitals in the afternoon at the cost of 20 percent for the region’s residents.

Hamarashid stressed that from now on practitioners will stay in the hospitals in the afternoon and will be paid 120,000 IQD ($103.00) but physicians should not remain in the hospital more than 10 nights.

The decision was also made to open six consultancy clinics in both Erbil and Duhok with expert doctors. The ticket price for the clinics will be 3,000 IQD ($2.58) for residents and the government will pay 50 percent of the price of prescriptions.

The ministry decided to open 24 clinics in Erbil and 12 in Duhok with 24-hour opening times.

The delegation, which included vice president of US commerce affairs for the Middle East and North Africa Lionel Johnson and director of affairs in the US chamber Steven Lyons, met with Minster Bayiz Talabani.

Both sides discussed how to improve US-Kurdish relations, according to a statement from the ministry.

The visitors talked about ways to convince US companies and banks to invest in the region.

The minister mentioned that the government is working on 400 projects this year.

The minister promised to facilitate work opportunities for US investors who want to invest in the region.
