Stock Exchange to Open in Erbil, With a Little Help from Dubai

Image

ERBIL, KRG (RUDAW) - With the cooperation of the Dubai Financial Market (DFM) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Kurdistan Region will open its own stock exchange.

Abdullah Abdulrahim, chairman of the Erbil Stock Exchange, told Rudaw, "We received approval from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and went to the UAE to benefit from their experience in this field. The UAE has the most active stock exchange market in the Middle East."

Sixty international companies have invested in the UAE stock market.

Last week, Abdulrahim signed a memorandum of understanding with the DFM, which will offer the necessary assistance and technical expertise.

Shilan Khanaqa, the KRG trade representative in the UAE, was present at the memorandum signing and told Rudaw, "The DFM will cooperate with the market in Kurdistan to establish a currency exchange and, in the future, a stock exchange."

She added, "This memorandum will last for three years and entails sending employees from the stock exchange market in Kurdistan to Dubai for an 18-month training course. It also entails cooperation in the field of technology."

Abdulrahim expects the stock exchange to open in six months. Regarding the training course in Dubai, he said, "The course will take place in Kurdistan once we have comparable training tools. In the meantime, our employees will go to Dubai for training."

He added, "We have an agreement with Iraq’s stock market as well to train our employees because this job is not easy and requires experience."

Abdulrahim tied the number of employees in Kurdistan’s stock market to its growth. "Initially, there will be 40 to 50 employees. Later, this number will increase to 100. Even the DFM, which is the most active financial market in the Middle East, only has 140 employees."

He also said that the size of investments in Kurdistan’s stock market will depend on international companies and their participation.

Khanaqa said that, as part of their cooperation with Kurdistan, when the stock market opens, the UAE will encourage companies to invest and buy shares in it.

"There are a very limited number of Kurdish companies that can invest in this stock market, because a stock exchange has its own rules,” Abdulrahim said. “They need to be contributing companies that make a profit and are older than one year. They should also have all their activities documented transparently."

Korek Telecom, Asia Cell, Newroz Telecom and Chavy Gashtiyari are shareholders in the stock market and can sell their shares to buyers.

Essa Kazim, the CEO of DFM, said at the memorandum signing that they would be talking with the 60 local and international member companies of the DFM about investing in Kurdistan’s stock market. "The DFM has US$49 billion,” he said. “We will try to make the stock exchange in Kurdistan have $60 billion."

Regarding the motivation behind investing in Kurdistan by UAE companies, Khanaq said, "First, it is the economic progress in Kurdistan. Second, the security in Kurdistan attracts investors. Finally, Kurdish society is a peaceful one and this is also very important."

Khanaqa also noted that the success of the Kurdish leadership, the efforts of the KRG trade representative in Dubai and President Massoud Barzani’s visits to the UAE have attracted investors.

The KRG trade representative office was opened in the UAE three years ago. In terms of international investment in the Kurdistan Region, the UAE ranks eighth.

"The UAE has 82 companies in Kurdistan. We asked them to increase their investments," said Khanaqa. She added that Dana Gas company alone has invested $1 billion in Kurdistan.

ABB has won orders worth around $120m (£86m) from KAR Construction and Engineering Company to design and build a power plant and construct two 400/132kV high-voltage substations that will supply power to the Kurdistan.

The 640MW open-cycle power plant will use natural gas from the Khormala oil field and light fuel oil (LFO) as back-up to generate electricity from gas turbines.

Two 400/132kV high-voltage substations will help feed the power into Iraq’s regional and national grid, and also supply electricity to the Khormala oil field.

The guy who told or introduced ABB to invest in Kurdistan was a kurdish civil engineer who now works in a project with my father, however the reason why this project was never accomplished was because of a corrupt kurd with influence. THis needs to stop, if we want to stop turkish companies from replacing european companies than we need to stop having corrupted politicians.

Kurdistan region receives 14.3 trillion dinars of Iraq's budget for 2013, an 18 per cent increase on this year's spending programme, a government spokesman said.
The 138 trillion dinar budget, which still requires parliamentary approval, is 21 trillion dinars greater than Iraq's 2012 budget, and is based on average oil prices of $90 per barrel and expected production of 2.9 million barrels of oil per day, Ali al-Dabbagh said in a statement.
Included in the 2013 budget is an expected 250,000 bpd of exports from Iraq's northern Kurdistan region.

Connecting Kurdistan's people and businesses

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Sun Nov 11, 2012 10:08 am

Jonson Siyaoosh, Minister of Transport and Communications

SUN, 11 NOV 2012 11:38 | Worldfolio

Transport and communication links are what connect people, take goods to their destinations and essentially allow business to operate. Without these links, the world as we know it could not function

The Ministry of Transport and Communications in the Kurdistan region of Iraq has an important role to play in the development of the area. If infrastructure growth is to be successful, the transport links in the region have to be equally suitable to this expansion, to accommodate for any potential increase in inhabitants and commuters who might use the area. Hon. Mr. Jonson Siyaoosh, the Minister of Transport and Communications for the Kurdistan Regional Government, explains how the ministry plan to oversee this evolution.

What has helped change the general picture in Kurdistan over the last decade?

Jonson Siyaoosh, Minister of Transport and Communications: Many things have changed here since 2003. In addition to the political climate change, the security and economic transformations have helped the government to develop the country. The biggest challenge that is impeding development is our relations with the central government and the political situation in the whole region. The new KRG cabinet’s relations with Turkey and other countries will help us continue with our development. We hope that these relations will lead to more growth in the region.

What specifically has changed with regards to Turkey?

There has been a change in our relations with Turkey for the better. We have business relations with them and we are looking to expand this for further development.

How can the Ministry of Transport & Communications help with the growth of the region, and more specifically what projects do you have ongoing to aid this development?

To be honest with you, up until now, this ministry was not very well supported by the government. Now we are starting to implement the mandate or the Law of the Ministry of Transport and Communications which was submitted a few months ago by the Kurdistan Parliament. The problems we had in the past should now be resolved. One issue was the airports, but now the airports will be managed by the Committee or authority of Civil Airports, which will work under our ministry according to our new law. We are also reviewing our terms in the ministry with regard to the communications and transportation sectors, so we are trying to regulate our standards so they are in line with the rest of the world.

We have many projects, including building a tramway. As you know Erbil and Slemani are crowded cities, and this will help decrease the traffic on the roads. We are looking for investors to implement this project on a BOT (Build Operate Transfer) basis. The most important project for us is the railway project. We want to start it and we are looking for investors. We need the council of ministers help for implementing this project and connecting the Kurdistan Region with European countries. We will also be connected with Baghdad to the south and the Iranian border to the east.
