French archaeologist, Maria Grazia, uncover a lost city southwest of Erbil

Maria Grazia, a French archaeologist, is leading a team of archaeologists who are uncovering a lost ancient city 25 kilometers southeast of the Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil.

“The Kurdistan Region has been recognized as one of the most important places where human cultures can be studied,” Grazia told Rudaw. "In Kurdistan, you can study all evolution almost without interruption."

Grazia explained that her and her team came to Erbil back in 2011 and have come back every summer. Most of the funds for their project come from a special committee in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs which funds archaeological projects.

“We work to recover little bit more of the area, we hope to be back soon,” she said. “This is a never ending work… and this is a national treasure.”
