Jalal Talabani, known affectionately as Mam Jalal (“Uncle Jalal”), is one of the most recognizable political figures in Kurdish and Iraqi politics and has played a key role in fighting for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as both a Peshmerga and a statesman.

Born in November 1933 in a village near the town of Koya, Talabani became a senior member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) at the tender age of 18.

Following a career as a Peshmerga and political figure fighting against the Ba’ath regime, Talabani became President of Iraq in 2005.

Illness forced him to retire from the political stage and following a 19-month stay in Germany for treatment, Mam Jalal returned to the Kurdistan Region.

He is seen with his family, friends, as well as world and local leaders
