British role in the destruction of the Kurdistan Kingdom

The Kingdom of Kurdistan did not last long, thanks to the British Royal Air Force acting on behalf of a puppet government in Baghdad. The British were not much kinder to the Kurds. It is wrongly preserved that the first regime that used poison gases against Kurds was Saddam Hussein’s government. This is wrong. British were the first regime to gas Kurds in South Kurdistan.

In this book, ’Deterring Democracy’, Noam Chomsky describes British rule in South Kurdistan as follows: [1]

As Secretary of State at the War Office in 1919, Churchill was approached by the RAF Middle East Command for permission to use chemical weapons ’against recalcitrant Arabs as experiment.’ Churchill authorized the experiment, dismissing objections:

I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilized tribes. It is not necessary to use only the most deadly gases; gases can be used which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effects on most of those affected.

Churchill added: ’we cannot in any circumstances acquiesce in the non utilization of any weapons which are available to procure a speedy termination of the disorder which prevails on the frontier.’ Chemical weapons were merely ’the application of Western science to modern warfare.’

Churchill was in favour of using air power and poison gas against ’uncivilized tribes’ and ’recalcitrant Arabs’ i.e. Kurds and Afghans [2]. Not surprisingly, in the 1990s, William Waldegrave, who was in charge of Prime Minister John Major’s ’open government’ initiative, ordered the removal from the Public Record Office of ’files detailing how British troops had used poison gas against Iraqi dissidents including Kurds in 1919 [2].

In this way, a people who wished to run their own affairs were oppressed to the limit of genocide. Their King was undermined by the mighty British forces and an ’imported’ King from totally different culture was forced upon them.

The history has been written with the blood of the oppressed by the oppressing people. When the writings are still wet, the concept of ‘civilised and uncivilised’ people emerges. The more oppressed people bleed, the larger the history books get. The history fails to report commensurately the suffering of the oppressed. In this way, we build, what we term, ’civilisation’.

All this is true. But looking backward to WWI is not going to make any difference now. Looking forward is the only way to go.

What I notice about Europe, is that they were once a bunch of tiny kingdoms. Each prince or king had their own little country which they fought over for generations. Now, they are merging together to form a big union, that is better for all of them. That is the wave of the future, and nothing can change that. They are not going to go back to being feudal kingdoms. Even if they don't like each other, they have learned to get along to the point that they do not fight, except with the occassional bad word toward each other.

It's impossible to rule the world.
I am really more worried about the future of the EU and America --> middle east. Also because of China, Japan, Russia.. etc

Well my military service has been very good for me obviously - now I am certain that I dislike the military system...

And - oh - Military DOES teach you alot actually - about yourself and what you want to do and what your able to do under immens pressure...

If I was in Kurdistan - I would be a Peshmerge - That's for sure... anyway - thats only because I love Kurdistan and not because I love violence... I just feel rational and reflected persons are capeable of making war a more humane... (goodguys! - If there is such a thing in a war!)

You're right, you're not alone, there are thousands upon thousands of Baathists and Arabs who agree with you

Undoubtedly the US (and Europe) SHOULD and COULD have acted sooner and have MUCH to answer for; years of supporting Saddam, encouraging the uprising that led to the slaughter of thousands, but act they did eventually and thank God (enshallah) for that.

No nation is perfect, including America, but evil, really? How would you refer to Arab governments then, what about the Turkish government, let's not forget the Iranians... if America are evil, then how do you describe these little gems?

America should have acted sooner, YES, hell the whole world should have acted sooner but let's keep things in perspective, it was the Arabs that you find yourself in agreement with that tossed babies into mass graves, NOT the Americans...

... the Americans are busy digging them up to allow families to give their children decent and dignified burials.

... they are busy working alongisde the Kurds defending Kurdistan against terrorists.

...they are busy supporting the Kurds in developing new business, a new infrastructure, new towns and cities, new jobs etc. etc.

... they are busy helping the Kurds to rebuild their once oppressed, now liberated country.

... they are busy helping thousands upon thousands of Kurds return home, something they thought they might never be able to do.

Yeah Kchi, what evil b*stards they are.

The only ones who are "Evil" in the West are the Western European countries - they have put Kurds throu HEEEEEEEELLLLL!!!!! And when the time has come for the Kurds to celebrate their natinhood and be a beacon of DEMOCRACY for the MIDDLE EAST - the France and Germany dont want to give Kurds this pleasure... I am sure Britain has the most "EVIL"of all the west europeans BUT they are now facing PARTS of their destruction and accepting their part in the murder of thousands of - if not millions of people!
