60th anniversary of September Revolution

Saturday is the 60th anniversary of the September Revolution, a Kurdish revolt against the Iraqi government. Kurdish leaders marked the anniversary with messages of unity and strength

“The great September Revolution is a symbol for all the revolutions in Kurdistan, when in the most difficult times of history, all different groups and classes of Kurdistan were gathered under a united mindset and faith to fight off tyranny and oppression and ask for freedom and their rights,” read a statement from Barzani.

The September Revolution, led by then leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Mullah Mustafa Barzani, broke out in 1961 after negotiations between Kurds and Baghdad did not bear fruit and the Iraqi government launched a military campaign against Kurdish resistance.

After nearly a decade of armed struggle, the Iraqi government on March 11, 1970 agreed to give Kurds autonomy, a decision that was never implemented on the ground. In 1974, the Iraqi army waged war on the Kurds again. The revolution collapsed with the 1975 Algiers accord between Iran and Iraq, cutting off Iran’s support for the Kurdish revolution.

KDP leader Masoud Barzani and Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also commemorated the September Revolution.

“All the achievements and political progress in Kurdistan is an extension of the sacrifices and struggle of our nation in the September Revolution,” Masoud Barzani said. “The September Revolution brought back confidence to the Kurdish people and became a strong political, ideological, and popular basis for the Kurdish national struggle against oppression and occupation.”
“Today, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the great September Revolution led by Mullah Mustafa Barzani, and the brave men and women who gave their lives for our national rights and a better future for our homeland,” Masrour Barzani tweeted.

Leaders Honor September Revolution

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), issued a message on the anniversary of the Great September Revolution, praising it as the most significant nationwide political and armed uprising of the Kurdish people, led by the late Mustafa Barzani

In his message, Barzani emphasized that the September Revolution, under the leadership of the late great Mullah Mustafa Barzani, restored the will and self-confidence of the Kurdish people, providing a strong political, organizational, and popular foundation for the ongoing Kurdish liberation struggle against oppression and occupation.

“The September Revolution, through the heroism and resistance of the Peshmerga and the masses, advanced the Kurdish people’s legitimate cause, propelling it forward and inspiring subsequent phases of the Kurdish liberation movement,” Barzani stated.

“On the 63rd anniversary of the outbreak of the Great September Revolution, we extend our deepest respects to the souls of the martyrs of the Revolution and all the martyrs of Kurdistan. It is clear from this national pride that these heroes made history for their people, and their lives and struggles serve as enduring lessons in resistance and perseverance,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also issued a message marking the 63rd anniversary of the Revolution.

“The commemoration of the September Revolution highlights a bright chapter in the Kurdish people’s liberation struggle for their legitimate rights and their unwavering defense of the Kurdish people and their homeland,” PM Barzani said.

He further noted, “The enduring values of the September Revolution, in promoting justice, unity, and resistance against oppression and injustice, continue to inspire us to serve the Kurdish people and protect our national achievements.”

“With great respect and gratitude, we honor the struggle and sacrifice of all the Peshmergas and fighters from diverse backgrounds and communities who participated in the revolution. May the souls of the martyrs of the September Revolution, and all the martyrs of Kurdistan, rest in peace,” the Prime Minister concluded.

September 11 marks the 63rd anniversary of the September Revolution, launched on September 11, 1961, under the leadership of Mullah Mustafa Barzani, the leader of the Kurdish people’s liberation movement. The revolution, with widespread Kurdish participation, was a response to the Iraqi government’s oppressive policies against the Kurds at that time.

Barzani Urges Unity
Anniversary of September Revolution

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), commemorated the September Revolution anniversary on Wednesday, urging Kurds to embrace unity and draw inspiration from its legacy, while highlighting the Peshmerga's key role in safeguarding Kurdistan's progress

“We have received the will from the September Revolution, and that will remain as long as we live. As long as these heroic Peshmergas remain, Kurdistan is in safe hands and will make greater progress day by day,” Barzani stated.

Reflecting on the significance of the revolution, Barzani described it as a defining moment in Kurdish history. “The September Revolution is a revolution that brought the cause of the Kurdish people to the whole world. In March 1970, a great achievement was made for the Kurdish people with the blood of the heroic Peshmergas,” he said.

Barzani also emphasized the continuity between the September and May revolutions, urging the Kurdish people and political parties to revive the unity seen during those historic moments
“The May Revolution was a continuation of the September Revolution, and I hope all parties and the Kurdish people will return to the spirit of the September Revolution and the 1991 uprising,” the Kurdish leader added.

In his address, Barzani highlighted the symbolic importance of Safin Mountain, a site deeply tied to Kurdish resistance, and honored the great Kurdish poet Hazhar. “We must thank God that we are commemorating the September Revolution in the presence of these people from Safin Mountain today. This is a great blessing. Safin is a high flag in the history of the Kurdish people's struggle,” Barzani remarked.

He recalled Hazhar’s depiction of the mountain and a pivotal moment from 1965, when Iraqi President Abdul Salam Arif visited the area. “Hazhar introduced Safin very well, because in 1965 there were two military brigades in the field. The next day, Abdul Salam Arif came to the scene where Isa Shawi delivered a speech saying: ‘We have been wanting to give you a precious gift for a long time, no gift more precious than Mount Safin. Now the ship has been cleaned, and we will present it to you as a gift.”

Barzani concluded by reaffirming the importance of the Peshmerga forces, asserting that their presence guarantees the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing stability and development.

PM Barzani honors September Revolution
Calls for unity and progress in Kurdistan

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani, in a speech marking the anniversary of the September Revolution, underscored the historical importance of the revolution and its enduring legacy for the Kurdish people. The revolution, which began in 1961, significantly raised global awareness of the Kurdish cause

President Barzani highlighted the Gulan Revolution as a direct continuation of the September Revolution, emphasizing the need for all political parties and the people of Kurdistan to embrace the spirit of both the September Revolution and the 1991 uprising.

"The unity of the Kurdish people is essential," President Barzani said. "By working together, we can achieve great things. Today, as we commemorate the September Revolution, I feel blessed to be among such beloved individuals. Safin Mountain remains a powerful symbol of our history."

Reaffirming his confidence in the region's security, Barzani declared, "As long as our heroic Peshmergas stand firm, Kurdistan will remain secure, and we will continue to make progress each day."
In closing, Barzani expressed his hopes for the ongoing success and development of Kurdistan. "With determination, anything is possible. Without it, nothing can be achieved," he said, calling for continued collaboration and effort in building a stronger future for the region.

Launched on September 11, 1961, the first phase of the armed struggle demanding political autonomy and recognizing the cultural rights of the Kurdish people in Iraq lasted nine years. Eventually, the revolutionary leadership and Baghdad authorities reached a deal in which the former Iraqi regime formally acknowledged the cultural rights of the Kurdish people and made pledges to grant political autonomy.

This agreement is widely regarded as one of the earliest accomplishments of the Kurdish struggle. It compelled the regime to recognize Kurdish demands, marking a historic moment in the Middle East.
