Italian Firm to Invest in Kurdistan’s
Waterfalls as Part of Tourism Project

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A major tourism project is set to transform the landscapes of Gali Ali Beg and Bekhal Waterfalls, as an Italian company prepares to invest in the area, according to Dr. Mohammed Shukri, Chairman of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Investment Board

Speaking to Kurdistan24 on Wednesday, Shukri confirmed that the project is expected to begin between April and May of this year, following the Kurdistan Region’s increasing appeal to international investors. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has emphasized the project’s potential to turn the region into a global tourist destination.

Foreign Investments Growing in Kurdistan

Shukri highlighted the growing presence of foreign investment in Kurdistan, revealing that it now constitutes 17% of total investments in the region. While some foreign investors fully own their projects, others opt for joint ventures with local companies, ensuring broader economic engagement.

The investment climate in Kurdistan has significantly improved over the past five years, with the KRG hosting several economic forums in collaboration with advanced economies. These efforts, Shukri noted, have allowed investors to differentiate Kurdistan’s investment environment from that of Iraq.

Resumption of the "Dashti Bahisht" Project

In addition to new projects, Kurdistan is also reviving investment initiatives that were halted due to previous financial crises. Shukri announced the imminent resumption of work on the "Dashti Bahisht" project, following direct orders from Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

A special committee within the Investment Board is currently working on the necessary procedures to restart the project, which will be developed by a local company.

Shukri further emphasized that while some projects were paused due to the war against ISIS and economic constraints, most have now resumed, reflecting Kurdistan’s commitment to fostering long-term economic stability.

A Promising Future for Investment in Kurdistan

With a strong focus on tourism, infrastructure, and foreign investment, Kurdistan continues to position itself as an economic hub in the region. The upcoming Italian investment in the waterfalls marks another step toward expanding Kurdistan’s global tourism appeal, reinforcing its economic diversification strategy.

China Expresses Interest in Expanding
    Cooperation with Kurdistan
A senior delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) met on Friday with Yang Guangrong, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Anhui Province, along with officials from the Communist Party of China (CPC), to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments

During the meeting, Yang provided an overview of Anhui Province, stating that it is home to 62 million people and ranks as China’s 11th largest economic hub in terms of industry and commerce. He emphasized Beijing’s growing focus on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, recognizing the KDP’s significant role in the area. Yang expressed China’s desire to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, energy, and infrastructure.

China has been expanding its presence in Iraq in recent years, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has led to major investments in infrastructure, energy, and economic projects. Chinese companies are already involved in oil exploration and refinery operations in Iraq, while Beijing has strengthened its diplomatic outreach to the Kurdistan Region.

Hemin Hawrami, head of the KDP delegation, conveyed Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the KDP’s greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping through Yang Guangrong. The delegation also provided a detailed briefing on the Kurdistan Region’s political landscape, the KDP’s governance policies, and the broader political situation in Iraq and Syria.

Discussions also touched upon the Kurdish issue in the Middle East, highlighting the challenges Kurdish communities face across the region. The delegation emphasized the importance of stability, political cooperation, and economic development in ensuring long-term prosperity for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The meeting underscores the deepening ties between the Kurdistan Region and China, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing cooperation in various fields. Over the past decade, China has increased its diplomatic and economic engagement with the Kurdistan Region, particularly in trade, energy, and infrastructure projects.

As Iraq’s second-largest trading partner and a key importer of its oil exports, China continues to expand its economic footprint in the country. The Kurdistan Region, with its strategic location and natural resources, remains a crucial partner in Beijing’s broader Middle East strategy.

China’s growing interest in the Kurdistan Region is part of a wider push to strengthen ties with emerging economies. With political stability and economic cooperation at the center of discussions, both the KDP and Chinese officials have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations in the years ahead.

KRG Announces Second Phase of Project Bloom

The Kurdistan Government (KRG) is launching the second phase of Project Bloom, a major economic initiative providing crucial financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Region

According to Aram Anwar, Director of Project Bloom, this economic initiative aims to empower local entrepreneurs through loans ranging from 1 million to 150 million Iraqi dinars. “The financial assistance provided under Project Bloom will allow businesses to expand sustainably, enhancing local economic growth,” Anwar stated.

He highlighted that only SMEs operating in the Kurdistan Region for at least 12 months, employing fewer than 100 individuals, and registering officially with the KRG are eligible to apply.

Applicants must also hold a Unique Personal Number (UPN) and Unique Unit Number (UEN) and their businesses must be registered with the KRG's General Directorate of Companies Registration.

The second phase of Project Bloom specifically targets strengthening local industries, fostering job creation, and boosting economic stability in the Region.

Anwar emphasized that applicants must reside in the Kurdistan Region, reinforcing the initiative’s focus on supporting regional economic resilience.

PM Barzani Discusses Investment
    With Qatar’s Wealth Fund
Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), on Monday to explore investment opportunities and economic reforms

The meeting, attended by QIA CEO Mohammed Al-Suwaidi, focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and banking reforms. The discussions highlighted the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) interest in attracting foreign investments to diversify its economy and modernize its financial systems.

QIA, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds with assets exceeding $450 billion, has been expanding its investments globally, particularly in emerging markets. In recent years, Qatar has intensified economic ties with Iraq, including a $7 billion investment agreement in 2023 covering real estate, tourism, and healthcare.

For the KRG, improving its banking system has been a long-standing goal as it seeks to transition from a largely cash-based economy to a more structured financial framework. The involvement of QIA could pave the way for enhanced banking regulations, digital financial services, and greater investor confidence in the region.

The meeting marked another step in the Kurdistan Region’s broader strategy of fostering economic partnerships with Gulf states, positioning itself as a regional hub for trade and investment.

Hotels Prepare for Tourist Influx

Hotels in Kurdistan are preparing for an expected surge in tourists ahead of Eid al-Fitr, with many establishments undergoing renovations and finalizing holiday bookings

Shuker Aziz, deputy president of the Erbil hotels and restaurants association, said that most hotel and motel owners in Erbil have been busy getting their facilities ready. “Many hotels have signed contracts with tourism companies for the second and third days of the holiday,” he told Kurdistan 24 on Wednesday.

Ibrahim Abdulmajid, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Tourism Board, said authorities have coordinated with provincial committees and security checkpoints to ensure a smooth experience for incoming tourists. “We expect most visitors and local citizens to explore Kurdistan’s natural and tourist attractions,” he added.

The Kurdistan Region, known for its mountainous landscapes and cultural heritage, has been a popular destination for visitors, especially during holidays. The Region boasts more than 470 hotels, including 40 five-star and branded establishments, catering to a growing number of domestic and international travelers
In recent years, the tourism sector has seen steady growth, driven by improved infrastructure and government efforts to promote Kurdistan as a safe and attractive destination. Officials expect this Eid to bring a significant boost to the industry, particularly in major cities such as Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok, where hotel occupancy rates tend to rise during holiday periods.

Kurdistan Readies for Influx of
Tourists During Eid al-Fitr Holiday

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) — As the Eid al-Fitr holiday approaches, the Kurdistan Region is preparing for a significant influx of visitors, with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s Tourism Board spearheading a comprehensive plan to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for tourists

Ibrahim Abdul Majid, the official spokesperson for the Tourism Board, told Kurdistan24 that all necessary arrangements are already in motion, structured around a two-tiered approach involving both public institutions and private enterprises. These preparations, he explained, are not only focused on ensuring the efficiency of logistics and services but also aimed at presenting Kurdistan as a secure, hospitable, and attractive holiday destination.

"The first tier involves high-level governmental coordination," Abdul Majid said. "We are working closely with the Ministry of Interior and security forces stationed at checkpoints to facilitate the smooth entry of visitors."

With hundreds of thousands expected to travel to the Kurdistan Region during the holiday, checkpoints at regional borders are being reinforced with specialized committees tasked with managing the flow of people. The aim, according to the Tourism Board, is to minimize delays and maximize the comfort of travelers.

"We want the checkpoints to reflect the true image of Kurdistan in terms of hospitality and efficiency," Abdul Majid stressed. "We assure all incoming visitors that procedures are straightforward and that they will be warmly welcomed."

To further assist tourists, informational brochures will be distributed at entry points, providing guidance on transportation, lodging, and tourist attractions. Inside city centers, mobile units from the Tourism Board will be stationed at key sites to offer on-the-ground support, ensure public safety, and handle any issues that may arise.

Abdul Majid also underscored the critical role of the private sector in the Region's tourism strategy. "We have met with the Association of Hotels and Restaurants to guarantee that all tourist centers and eateries are fully operational throughout the holiday," he said.

This collaboration ensures that visitors will enjoy a seamless experience, from secure entry into the Region to high-quality hospitality services in urban and rural destinations alike. With its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and reputation for safety, the Kurdistan Region is positioning itself as a top destination for both domestic and international tourists during Eid.

"Both the public and private sectors in the Kurdistan Region are fully prepared to offer a model holiday experience to the expected large number of visitors," Abdul Majid affirmed, expressing confidence that this year’s Eid festivities will further enhance the Region's image as a welcoming and vibrant hub for tourism.

The Tourism Board’s proactive efforts reflect a broader strategy to boost economic activity through tourism, which has become a cornerstone of the KRG's diversification agenda beyond oil dependency. With thousands expected to arrive over the coming week, all eyes are now on Kurdistan's ability to deliver an exemplary holiday experience.

Akre’s Rice Market Booms

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdish rice market in Duhok’s Akre district is experiencing a significant surge in activity. The mill workers are busy, and local businesses are thriving as demand for rice skyrockets, both domestically and internationally

“The rice we produce is not only distributed throughout various provinces in Iraq, but it’s also exported abroad,” shared one of the mill workers in the area, highlighting the growing significance of Akre’s rice on regional and global markets.

Mohammed Karim, a local businessman who purchases rice from Akre every year, explained to Kurdistan24 reporter Ari Hussein, “I’m here to buy a ton of six-month-old rice from Akre, which will then be distributed to several restaurants in Sulaimani to meet the increased demand during the festive season.”
Prices for rice in Akre vary depending on the type and quality, ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 dinars per kilogram. With Eid al-Fitr in full swing and a notable influx of tourists to the region, demand spiked even further.

Mustafa Surchi, a mill worker from Akre, noted, “The rice market is bustling right now, especially as so many people arrived to celebrate Eid, coupled with the increased demand during Eid al-Fitr.”

The rice harvest season in Akre begins in early to mid-October, followed by planting from April to May. According to the Agriculture Directorate of Akre, the district produced an impressive 12,000 tons of rice last year, offering six distinct varieties: Shash Mangi, Tahaloof, Kas Naditi, Sadri, Bundar, and Misri.

Akre’s rice, celebrated for its diverse colors, sizes, and flavors, has drawn significant attention. Both locals and tourists are increasingly eager to purchase it, and as domestic rice production grows, fewer people are relying on imported varieties
This rise in local production not only supports regional farmers and mill workers but also contributes to the region’s growing agricultural industry. The boost in demand, particularly during the festive Eid season, reflects a bright future for Akre’s rice market, making it a key player in the Kurdish agricultural landscape.

Erbil Welcomes Over
76,000 Tourists During Eid

The Erbil Governorate successfully managed a significant influx of visitors during the recent Eid al-Fitr holiday, welcoming 76,654 tourists to the capital

In a statement released Wednesday, officials declared the comprehensive plan for the three-day holiday period a success, highlighting the effective coordination that ensured public safety and service provision despite the large number of arrivals.

The plan, orchestrated by the governorate's Security Committee, aimed to maintain peace and security while facilitating a positive experience for both residents and visitors during the festive celebration.

Officials reported smooth operations across security sectors following the successful implementation of the plan.

The Erbil Security Directorate (Asayish) executed its specific strategies seamlessly, with forces remaining on duty for any eventuality.

Similarly, the Erbil Police Directorate maintained full readiness, successfully implementing its plans. Police statistics for the Eid period showed 28 crimes were recorded, and encouragingly, all 28 cases were solved
The effective tourism management plan included dedicated committees at checkpoints to assist travelers and provide support contact numbers.

Monitoring teams were also deployed to tourist sites to ensure service quality was maintained for the significant number of visitors.

While the traffic management plan was carried out as intended, authorities noted challenges arising from driver behavior.

Four traffic accidents occurred due to non-compliance with regulations and speeding, resulting in 12 injuries.

Civil Defense units across Erbil remained on active duty throughout Eid. They responded effectively to nine fire incidents, successfully controlling all situations and preventing any loss of life or injuries; damages were reported as solely material.

Healthcare services operated at full capacity. Hospitals and medical teams within the Erbil Governorate attended to 5,874 citizens over the three days.

During this time, 119 babies were born (71 boys and 48 girls). Medical facilities also performed 669 various surgeries and provided 620 kidney dialysis sessions.

Specialized care continued uninterrupted, with 159 patients treated at Nanakali Hospital and 520 receiving radiation therapy at the Awat Center.

The Erbil Governorate highlighted the successful coordination and execution of its multifaceted plan, ensuring a generally safe and secure Eid al-Fitr celebration while effectively managing the large influx of tourists and addressing health service demands and isolated incidents.

Around 200 thousand tourists
visited Kurdistan during Eid

Approximately 200,000 tourists from Iraq’s central and southern provinces visited the Kurdistan Region during the three-day Islamic Eid al-Fitr holiday, according to official figures

Sunday marked the first day of the Islamic holiday, during which Muslims visit one another and seek forgiveness. Many see the public holiday as an opportunity to travel, and a large number of people from federal Iraq view the Kurdistan Region as a top tourism destination due to its proximity, lower costs compared to traveling abroad, and its relatively moderate temperatures in comparison to the rest of the country.

Nearly 200,000 tourists from Iraq’s central and southern provinces arrived in the Kurdistan Region, according to data Rudaw obtained late Tuesday from checkpoints connecting Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok provinces to federally-controlled areas. The capital Erbil received the lion’s share of visitors.

Ahmed Haider, a university student from Tikrit, told Rudaw on Tuesday that he spends most holidays in the Kurdistan Region.

He noted that while paperwork at the key checkpoint between Mosul and Erbil has eased, he blamed the lack of cooperation from tourists for his four-hour wait there.

“Their [Kurdish authorities] service is very good, and they respect people. Those in charge here [in the Kurdistan Region] do their work properly, but we tourists are not well-organized. We all rush in randomly, which is why congestions occur,” Haider said
In the days leading up to Muslim holiday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) instructed all checkpoints to facilitate procedures for tourists, expected in large numbers in the following days. Any tourist can obtain a security clearance, known as a residence card, in less than two minutes, allowing them to travel within the Kurdistan Region for up to three months.

Ibrahim Wazah works for a company which on Tuesday brought more than 600 tourists into the Kurdistan Region on board 15 buses.

“This year, the facilitation at checkpoints has been better than previous years, but as you know, large crowds create obstacles,” he told Rudaw.

KRG Strengthens Economic Ties with UAE

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has significantly expanded its participation at this year’s Annual Investment Meeting (AIM Congress) in Abu Dhabi, UAE, marking a pivotal moment in regional economic diplomacy. The KRG delegation, led by Dr. Mohammed Shukri, Chairman of the Kurdistan Board of Investment, has actively engaged with international business leaders and policymakers at the 14th edition of the event, which runs from April 7 to 9, 2025

Dr. Shukri emphasized that this year’s participation is set to have a greater impact, thanks to a more substantial presence from the Kurdistan Region.

He stated in an interview with Kurdistan24, "This is our second consecutive year participating in the AIM Congress, and we believe this year’s engagement will be more effective. Our delegation has grown, and we are more strategically positioned to explore new business opportunities, especially with the Emirati companies operating in our region."

As part of the delegation, Dr. Shukri and key KRG officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry have been engaged in discussions aimed at boosting economic ties between the UAE and the Kurdistan Region.

"We have several projects lined up with Emirati companies that we plan to implement in the coming months," Dr. Shukri added, signaling promising opportunities in various sectors, particularly agriculture and infrastructure, with the Emiratis' growing presence in the region.

The KRG has made notable strides in economic cooperation with the UAE, with over 200 Emirati companies currently operating in Kurdistan, contributing to a trade volume exceeding two billion dollars.

Dr. Shukri further highlighted the significance of these partnerships, stating, "The relations between the Kurdistan Region and the UAE are long-standing, and they have a direct positive impact on the economy of Erbil and Abu Dhabi. A large portion of the goods and products imported to Kurdistan are imported via UAE ports, enhancing our regional trade capabilities."

In a bid to showcase Kurdistan’s business potential, the Kurdistan Pavilion at the AIM Congress has become a focal point for networking, with officials working to attract investors to various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and technology.

Dr. Shukri also noted, "We have set up the Kurdistan Pavilion here at the AIM Congress to provide a dedicated space for showcasing business opportunities and facilitating investor relationships. It’s a key part of our strategy to make Kurdistan a central hub for international business."
The KRG delegation also underscored plans for collaborative projects with Emirati firms, particularly focusing on the agricultural sector in the Duhok governorate, where an Emirati-led agricultural project is already showing signs of success.

"We hope to expand these initiatives, aiming to foster sustainable agricultural growth and strengthen our economic resilience," said Dr. Shukri.

As part of efforts to improve governmental processes, the KRG has also discussed digital transformation strategies with the UAE government, with plans to enhance electronic governance systems in the coming years.

Dr. Shukri added, "The UAE has extensive experience in electronic governance, and we aim to leverage their expertise to strengthen Kurdistan's own governance and public sector management."

The 2025 AIM Congress is expected to run until April 9, with continued discussions and sessions designed to build on the economic foundations set by previous meetings.

As Dr. Shukri stated, "Our participation in this congress is not just about increasing the number of companies from the UAE operating in Kurdistan; it's about creating deeper, more meaningful business collaborations that will drive long-term economic growth."

As the conference continues, the Kurdistan Region’s involvement is set to yield significant economic benefits, further cementing its role as a key player in the Middle Eastern investment landscape.

The AIM Congress, held under the theme "The New Wave of a Globalized Investment Landscape: Towards a New Balanced World Structure," has attracted more than 20,000 participants, including heads of state, 60 ministers, and 1,250 panelists from 180 countries. The event remains one of the largest and most influential global gatherings focused on fostering sustainable economic development and international investment.

KRG Halt Key Vegetable Imports
    to Boost Local Products
The Director General of Agriculture in Erbil announced that imports of tomatoes and onions will be halted at the end of April, in line with government efforts to support domestic agriculture and promote local produce

Hemin Sayid Murad, speaking to BasNews, said the decision comes as local tomato and onion crops begin to ripen, reducing the need for foreign imports.

“At the end of this month, tomato imports will end as local produce ripens. Also, some other local produce is ripening. At that time, some foreign produce will either have increased customs duties or be banned [from import],” he explained.

Murad added that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is committed to boosting domestic production and aiding local farmers.

“The government is always striving to further develop domestic products and support our farmers. For this purpose, the Ninth Cabinet has done very important work to assist and market their products, and this will continue,” he said.

The move aligns with a recent decision by Iraq’s Economic Council, issued on April 8th, which banned onion imports and allowed controlled imports of tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, turnips, and beets.

The Erbil agricultural official confirmed that these measures also apply to the Kurdistan Region.

Agriculture has long been a critical sector in the Kurdistan Region’s economy, with seasonal bans on imports designed to protect local farmers during harvest periods.

The KRG’s Ninth Cabinet has implemented a series of policies aimed at improving agricultural infrastructure, increasing self-sufficiency, and reducing reliance on foreign produce.

While the region still depends on some imported food items, efforts are ongoing to create better storage, marketing, and distribution networks to help Kurdish farmers compete with imported goods.

KRG Unveils Pomegranate Statue

Kurdistan Government (KRG) unveiled a statue of a pomegranate at the Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday, symbolizing the Region’s growing success in agricultural exports under Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s reform agenda

At the ceremony, Agriculture Minister Begard Talabani highlighted the achievements of the KRG’s ninth cabinet, noting that local products—including pomegranates, potatoes, tomato paste, apples, and honey—have reached international markets.

“Due to the assistance provided to farmers, the level of production has reached the export stage,” she said, emphasizing the government's commitment to food security and farmer support
According to the KRG’s Media and Information Department, 60 tons of Kurdistan pomegranates were exported to Europe and Arab countries last year. This initiative is part of the Kurdistan Agriculture Export Initiative (KAEI), launched by Prime Minister Barzani to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues.

The KAEI has facilitated the export of various agricultural products, including apples, grapes, and honey, to Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Europe
Since 2019, the KRG has implemented over 2,175 agricultural projects, including the construction of 12 new silos and 27 open-air grain storage facilities with a combined capacity of approximately 900,000 tons of wheat. Investment in agriculture has increased from 1.8% to over 9% of the region's total investment, leading to self-sufficiency in several products and boosting exports.

The pomegranate statue stands as a testament to the region's agricultural revival and the government's efforts to position Kurdistan as a key player in regional food production and trade.

US Tariffs Challenge Growing Kurdish
    Exports to American Market
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The United States has imposed a 39 percent tariff on goods imported from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, a move that could significantly impact the growing demand for Kurdish food products on the American market

Despite the tariff hike, exports from the Kurdistan Region to the US are on the rise, driven by increasing interest in regional specialties such as tahini, sumac, walnuts, and honey. These products are not only gaining traction on store shelves but are also being embraced by restaurants seeking authentic Middle Eastern ingredients.

“My restaurants serve mostly Middle Eastern food. I use a lot of tahini, and I have always thought it would be a good idea to import it myself rather than buy it from distributors,” said Rose Previte, owner of Washington, D.C.-based Maydān restaurant, in an interview with Kurdistan24.

Previte discovered a tahini producer in the Kurdistan Region through a personal connection and was impressed by the product’s quality. “When I tasted the tahini, I decided to bring it and sell it here,” she said.

However, the newly imposed 39 percent tariffs by the Trump administration could complicate these efforts. The increased cost of importing Kurdish goods may affect both small importers and customers, posing a challenge to further expansion into the American market.

Eco-Tourism in Kurdistan:
Natural Wonders Captivate Global Travelers

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Kurdistan Region of Iraq is gaining global attention as a rising eco-tourism destination, thanks to its diverse natural landscapes, majestic mountains, and lush valleys that offer a serene escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. With attractions like the towering Halgurd Mountain, the stunning Gali Ali Beg Waterfall, and the dramatic Rawanduz Canyon, the region is fast becoming a favorite for travelers seeking both sustainability and scenic beauty

Gali Ali Beg Waterfall, located in the Soran district northeast of Erbil, is one of Iraq’s most iconic natural sites. It cascades from rugged cliffs surrounded by green slopes, and is so culturally significant that it is featured on the 5,000 IQD banknote. Not far away lies Rawanduz Canyon, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Kurdistan," with its deep gorges and winding valleys offering hikers and photographers panoramic views and a sense of awe. Further into the highlands, Halgurd Mountain—the highest peak in Iraq at over 3,600 meters—draws trekkers and mountaineers from across the world with its snow-capped summit and alpine charm.

The region also boasts the breathtaking Ahmed Awa Waterfalls near Halabja, a popular summer retreat surrounded by forested hills, and Lake Dukan, a serene, crystal-clear reservoir nestled among the mountains of Sulaymaniyah. Tourists are increasingly exploring Akre’s terraced hills, the limestone caves of Shanidar—rich in prehistoric significance—and the tranquil beauty of Amedi, a historic hilltop town with sweeping mountain views.

To support and promote eco-tourism, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has focused on improving access to these natural sites by enhancing roads and investing in tourism-friendly infrastructure. Local tourism boards have launched digital campaigns and multilingual websites to attract international visitors while highlighting the region’s rich ecological diversity. In addition, private sector investment has led to the development of environmentally friendly lodges, nature retreats, and tour services that emphasize low-impact travel and cultural sensitivity.

Travel bloggers and tourism platforms, including Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor, have increasingly featured Kurdistan in their guides, citing it as one of the Middle East’s safest and most underrated nature destinations. This growing visibility has sparked interest from eco-conscious travelers, many of whom are drawn to Kurdistan's mix of pristine landscapes, cultural hospitality, and off-the-beaten-path allure.

With its dramatic geography, cultural depth, and expanding tourism infrastructure, the Kurdistan Region is laying the groundwork for a thriving eco-tourism sector. By preserving its natural heritage and promoting responsible travel, the region not only opens its doors to the world but also builds a sustainable future where nature and tourism flourish together.

New poultry marketing company to open

Kurdistan’s minister of agriculture announced on Sunday that efforts are underway to establish a marketing company to promote poultry products and reduce production costs in support of farmers

In a presser she held, Begard Talabani explained that her ministry is “working to establish a big company in the Kurdistan Region for marketing purposes. It will reduce production costs and support the poultry project owners.”

Talabani added that the agriculture ministry has submitted a request to the Kurdistan Region’s Council of Ministers, as well as the offices of the prime minister and deputy prime minister, seeking authorization to set up the company. Once approved, the company will collaborate with poultry farmers and project owners to streamline production and distribution.

Talabani also highlighted that “the export of eggs has begun, which is one of the products provided by the [chicken farm] owners,” adding that “many other projects are underway” as well.
