KRG Announces Resumption of
    Kurdistan Friendship Group
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that the first Kurdistan Friendship Group in the European Parliament will resume its work

Following tireless lobbying efforts by the KRG Delegation to the European Union, the European Friends of Kurdistan Group was established in 2013 as the first group of European parliamentarians dedicated to promoting and defending the rights and interests of the Kurdistan Region.

During an official visit to the European Parliament in November 2014, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani officially announced the establishment of the group.

The Friends of Kurdistan Group included representatives from all factions in the European Parliament, comprising 35 parliamentarians from various European countries.

Dilawar Azhgayi, the KRG Representative to the European Union, told BasNews that the group was the first Kurdish friendship group in Europe and played a significant role in raising awareness about the war against the Islamic State.

“Although the group’s activities were interrupted during the coronavirus crisis and the end of the previous European Parliament session, we have recently held many meetings with European parliamentarians to reactivate it,” Azhgayi stated.

The KRG Representative also emphasised that just as the Kurdistan Friendship Group was the first Kurdish lobby group and inspired the formation of others, efforts are now underway to revitalise the group to protect and advocate for the rights and demands of the Kurdistan Region.

Peshmerga commanders praise US backing

Peshmerga commanders on Monday expressed gratitude for the longstanding support of the United States in addressing security challenges, emphasizing the need for continued assistance as the Islamic State (ISIS) remains a persistent threat

“We as the Peshmerga people, as the people of Kurdistan, are grateful to the US from the depth of our hearts,” said Sirwan Barzani, the Makhmour front commander of Peshmerga forces, during a press conference in Malaqara village, southwest of Erbil.

Barzani expressed gratitude to Spirit of America, a US non-governmental organization supporting American military personnel and diplomats, for providing surveillance cameras to Peshmerga forces to enhance security.

Barzani emphasized the importance of the support of the US-led coalition for the Kurdistan Region.

“We as the Peshmerga forces, as any army, always need support, especially of our allies and especially the US, who has not been negligent until now, but we need much more [support],” emphasizing that “ISIS movements continue.”

This comes a day after two commanders and an officer of the joint Iraqi-Kurdish security forces were killed, with three soldiers wounded when an IED planted by ISIS exploded on a joint Iraqi-Kurdish patrol in Salahaddin province’s Tuz Khurmatu, located about 65 kilometers south of Kirkuk city.

When ISIS seized swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, Peshmerga played a key role in driving the extremist group out of the areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad, especially Kirkuk. The US-led global coalition provided Peshmerga and Iraqi forces with military assistance to defeat ISIS territorially in 2017.

The United States has provided the Peshmerga with several rounds of military aid over the years.

“The reorganization of the Peshmerga forces continues,” said Major General Hoshmand Haider, a representative of the Peshmerga ministry at the conference.

Despite efforts by Washington and several European countries, the Peshmerga remains a highly partisan force in organization and loyalty, split between the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and its rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

He assured that “by 2026, no Peshmerg force will be outside the Peshmerga ministry.”
Unit 70 forces are affiliated with the PUK and Unit 80 forces are controlled by the KDP. These two units make up the majority of the Peshmerga forces, amounting to over 100,000 troops.

Unification of the Peshmerga forces has been on the agenda of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for several years, and while some progress has been made and a number of brigades controlled by the PUK and the KDP have been added to the ministry, a lot of work remains to be done.

Haider detailed that the reorganization of divisions 5 and 6 is on the agenda of the ministry, noting that 6 divisions have been reorganized since last year.

Baghdad and Kurdish forces have formed joint brigades and launched joint operations against ISIS to secure disputed areas that are claimed by the federal government and the KRG.

The Iraqi constitution recognizes federal autonomy like the Kurdistan Region and its right to provide security with regional forces like the Peshmerga as part of the national defense apparatus.

Talks on forming KRG's tenth cabinet

The KDP has already engaged in discussions with several political parties in recent days and plans to meet with others in the coming round of talks

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is set to begin a fresh round of negotiations with political parties next week to form the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) tenth cabinet, a source from the KDP Central Committee told Kurdistan24 on Tuesday.

The source revealed that the KDP has already engaged in discussions with several political parties in recent days and plans to meet with others in the coming round of talks. “The KDP aims to form a government that includes as many political parties as possible,” the source stated.

Addressing the party’s relations with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the source confirmed that the PUK is on the KDP’s agenda for discussions. However, the exact timing of their meeting remains undecided. “It could be next week or another day,” the source explained.

The negotiations are also influenced by the anticipated results of the general population census. According to the source, “After the general population census, the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission will officially announce the results of the appeals, providing greater clarity for political parties about their next steps.”

The latest Kurdistan Region parliamentary election results have determined the distribution of seats among the major political parties:

    - KDP: 39 seats

    - PUK: 23 seats

    - New Generation Movement: 15 seats

    - Kurdistan Islamic Union: 7 seats

    - National Stance Movement (Halwest): 4 seats

    - Kurdistan Justice Group: 3 seats

    - People’s Front: 2 seats

    - Gorran Movement: 1 seat

    - Others: 6 seats
The KDP's ongoing discussions are seen as pivotal in shaping the future cabinet, with all eyes on the dynamics between the region’s leading political forces.

Hamilton Road development project

In a statement to Kurdistan24, Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing Agrin Abdullah said that the ministry is developing extensive plans for the strategic transportation project

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Region’s Government has begun plans to build the Hamilton highway, connecting Khalifan district to Gali Ali Beg in the Independent Soran Administration, following directives from Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

In a statement to Kurdistan24, Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing Agrin Abdullah said that the ministry is developing extensive plans for the strategic transportation project.

The development will include a 12-kilometer highway built to high engineering specifications, including the removal of existing old bridges in the Gali Ali Beg area.

Abdullah also revealed plans for a 7-kilometer tunnel through Mount Korek, though this aspect of the project will be temporarily delayed due to three primary factors: high costs of construction, prioritizing the development of Hamilton Road, and the ongoing economic challenges facing the Kurdistan Region.

The Hamilton Road, historically important to the Kurdistan Region, was initially engineered by A.M. Hamilton in the 1920s and 1930s during the British mandate period.

The road has become a crucial transportation artery, connecting several parts of Kurdistan and enabling economic development in the region.

The new development project marks a noteworthy upgrade to this historic infrastructure, intending to improve connectivity and economic growth in the independent administration of Soran, which has seen growing development in recent years.

The project underlines the KRG's commitment to infrastructure development despite current economic challenges, with an emphasis on improving transportation networks in strategic areas of the region.

Barzani Urges Swift KRG Formation

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), marked the New Year with a call for the swift formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) tenth cabinet and emphasized addressing regional challenges, particularly the evolving situation in Syria

Barzani commended the Kurdistan Parliament elections held in October, calling them a testament to the will of the Kurdish people. “The people of Kurdistan have conveyed their message clearly, and it is imperative to respond by forming the new cabinet without delay,” he said in a statement.

He stressed that a functional government is crucial to implementing programs that serve the Region’s citizens. Barzani also reiterated the importance of resolving disputes between the KRG and Iraq’s federal government through dialogue and adherence to the constitution. He called for an end to obstacles undermining Kurdish rights.

Turning to regional dynamics, Barzani addressed the implications of ongoing developments in Syria, noting their potential to reshape the region. “These changes present an opportunity for Syria’s communities to establish coexistence, peace, and stability through mutual understanding,” he stated.

The Kurdish leader warned against the perils of continued crises, extremism, and violence, urging all parties to embrace dialogue and reject fanaticism. “Our region cannot endure further chaos. No side can impose its will on others,” he said.

The New Year, Barzani added, should herald peace and coexistence. He extended wishes for prosperity and protection for the people of Kurdistan, particularly the families of martyrs and Peshmerga forces.

KDP, PUK cabinet formation talks

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are set to meet next week for further talks on cabinet formation and the distribution of positions, the PUK spokesperson said on Tuesday

“The PUK and KDP are set to hold a meeting on January 7, 2025,” PUK spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pira told Rudaw.

The Kurdish parties last met in mid-December, where they again discussed the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) new cabinet.

“Both sides agreed to prepare a joint program for the principles on which Kurdistan’s governance will be conducted in the next phase, in a way that protects the position and stability of the Kurdistan Region and the rights and interests of its citizens and communities,” the Kurdish parties said in a joint statement after the previous meeting.

An informed source from the PUK’s leadership council told Rudaw that the next meeting will discuss the government agenda and the distribution of positions among the parties.

“A joint committee of the PUK and KDP will prepare a draft and present the government program for the next cabinet,” the source said, requesting anonymity.

The Kurdistan Region held its long-overdue elections in October, resulting in a consolidation of power for the ruling KDP which won 39 seats, followed by the PUK with 23. The opposition New Generation Movement (NGM) took third place with 15 seats.

No single party won a majority in the parliament so a governing coalition will have to be formed, as has historically been the case. The KDP and PUK, while rivals, also share power in government.

But several parties including the Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal), the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), the People's Front (Baray Gal), and the National Stance Movement (Halwest) have repeatedly denounced the election results, alleging fraud and voter manipulation

Personally, I do NOT believe that Bafel Talabani's PUK won more seats than the People's Front (Baray Gal), Bafel Talabani is a TRAITOR and should have been arrested and imprisoned years ago

BCF Aid to Millions in 2024

The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) announced that over 3.2 million people, including 433,257 families, benefited from its humanitarian projects and activities in 2024

In its annual report, BCF noted it had implemented 121 projects with a total budget of 10.4 billion Iraqi dinars. The beneficiaries included refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), local communities, and citizens of Syria and Lebanon.

The foundation provided aid in areas such as non-food items, protection, water and sanitation, livelihoods, camp management, shelter, health, cash assistance, food security, education, and development. Humanitarian assistance was distributed across the Kurdistan Region, as well as Nineveh, Diyala, and Baghdad provinces, extending to neighboring countries Syria and Lebanon.

KRG Highlights Strategic Achievements

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), under the leadership of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, announced the completion of 10 major strategic projects and several additional initiatives in 2024, reflecting significant progress in infrastructure, economic development, and public services

In infrastructure, the KRG completed several key road and bridge projects. The Spilik-Khalifan-Soran road and the 120-meter road connecting Erbil to Duhok were significant milestones. Additionally, bridges in Derbandikhan and Awakhair were opened, facilitating smoother travel for commuters. New projects, such as the Erbil-Koya road and the Bardarash-Khabat link, were also initiated, further strengthening connectivity across the Kurdistan Region.

Food security remained a priority, with major investments in agricultural infrastructure. The Qushtapa grain silo, with a capacity of 40,000 tons and a budget of 21.2 billion IQD, began operations to serve local farmers. Similarly, the Halabja silo, designed to store 40,000 tons of grains at a cost of 27.2 billion IQD, is nearing completion. In addition, the Akray Green Market project, costing 28.6 billion IQD, will become Iraq’s second-largest hub for fruits and vegetables, supporting local produce and markets.

Water resource management saw significant advancements. The rehabilitation of dams in Chamrga, Bastora, and Gomaspan added 120 million cubic meters of water storage capacity, addressing vital water needs. Projects such as the Erbil Water Fast-Track Program and the Qushtapa Water Project aim to resolve water shortages for over 2 million residents, ensuring sustainable access to clean water.

The energy sector also experienced a transformative year with the launch of the “Rwnaki Project," a cornerstone initiative targeting 24-hour electricity coverage across the Kurdistan Region by 2026. To date, over 100,000 homes in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok have benefited from improved electricity access, marking a significant step toward energy security.

In healthcare and education, the KRG made substantial investments to improve public services. The largest oncology hospital in Kurdistan and Iraq was inaugurated, providing advanced treatment options for cancer patients. A new rehabilitation center for individuals affected by substance abuse was also established. Furthermore, the opening of 42 new schools across the Region improved access to education, addressing longstanding gaps in the sector.

The government also emphasized economic diversification and tourism. The second phase of the Zakho Corniche Project was launched, enhancing tourism infrastructure in the area. A five-star hotel near Korek Mountain and new industrial facilities in Erbil demonstrated the Region's commitment to fostering growth in these sectors.

Environmental sustainability remained a critical focus. Expanded dam infrastructure and renewable resource initiatives were implemented to combat water scarcity and protect Kurdistan’s natural environment. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the Region’s resilience to climate change and its impacts.

PM Barzani highlighted the strategic importance of these projects, underscoring their role in improving living standards and securing a prosperous future for the Kurdistan Region. These developments reflect the Ninth Cabinet’s dedication to sustainable development and its ongoing efforts to address the needs of its citizens across all sectors.

KDP, PUK delegations continue talks

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) delegations convened in Erbil’s Saad Abdullah Conference Hall on Thursday for the third consecutive day of discussions, according to Kurdistan 24 reporter Nawras Abdulla

Abdulla reported that a draft agreement has been prepared, encompassing both shared objectives and areas of contention.

“About 15 points have been outlined in the draft, including six distinct articles addressing the powers of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) president, prime minister, deputy prime minister, ministers, and directors general,” Abdulla explained. The draft also includes discussions on the collection and distribution of revenue across the Kurdistan Region’s provinces.

The technical teams from both parties have engaged in three days of detailed negotiations, reaching agreements on some matters while continuing discussions on unresolved issues described as "red points." Both sides have documented their positions in the draft, which will be reviewed by the high-level political delegations of the KDP and PUK in their upcoming meetings next week.

Plans are also underway for further visits and the development of practical solutions to address remaining disagreements.

Abdulla highlighted the cooperative and urgent approach both sides have demonstrated during the negotiations, underscoring their commitment to completing the necessary steps for forming the new KRG cabinet within the legal timeframe.

The ongoing talks reflect a crucial effort by the two main Kurdish parties to finalize an agreement that will shape the Region's governance and address key administrative and financial issues.

President Barzani reflects on Kurdish struggle

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - During the fifth Middle East Peace and Security Forum (MEPS 2024) in Duhok, President Masoud Barzani offered a historical perspective on the Kurdish question and advocated for peaceful solutions to long-standing regional issues

"We all know that after World War II, the regional redistribution that took place wasn't satisfactory to any nation - not the Kurds, Arabs, Turks, or Persians. However, it was an imposed reality," Barzani stated, addressing the forum's attendees.

In a poignant reflection on Kurdish history, Barzani emphasized the particular hardships faced by the Kurdish people: "The Kurds suffered the greatest injustice in this arrangement. For 100 years, the Kurdish nation's existence was denied. And for 100 years, the Kurds resisted."
The President highlighted the futility of historical approaches on both sides: "Neither the denial of Kurdish existence succeeded, nor could the Kurds change this reality," he observed. Drawing from this historical lesson, Barzani concluded, "This teaches us that we must sit together and consider peaceful, brotherly solutions based on mutual respect."

The Kurdish question has been one of the Middle East's most complex issues since the post-World War I settlements.

The President's remarks reference the 1920s treaties that established modern Middle Eastern borders without providing for Kurdish statehood, despite earlier promises. His call for peaceful dialogue reflects a growing recognition among regional leaders that historical conflicts require diplomatic rather than military solutions
The MEPS forum continues to serve as a vital platform for such frank discussions about regional challenges and potential paths toward resolution through peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding.

KDP and PUK Close to Finalizing Cabinet
    for the Next Four Years
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have nearly completed the blueprint for the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s four-year cabinet program, achieving a 90% completion rate in drafting

Kurdistan 24's correspondent on Thursday reported that delegations from the two ruling parties plan to present the draft of the new cabinet's program to their parties' senior delegations next week.

The draft outlines the governance structure for the next four years, including key aspects such as the powers of ministers, revenue distribution to provinces, and crisis management responsibilities.

The two parties initiated their discussions this past Tuesday, with a follow-up meeting on Wednesday, and a third meeting on Thursday. A meeting with senior party members was scheduled for Thursday but has been postponed to next week due to the need for further refinements to the draft program.

This follows the outcomes of the October 20, 2024, Kurdistan Parliament elections, where the KDP won 39 seats, and the PUK secured 23.

Strategic Implications and Regional Impact

The creation of this program is critical not only for the internal governance of the Kurdistan Region but also for its interactions on the international stage. A stable and clearly defined governance plan enhances the region's ability to attract foreign investment and engage in international diplomacy.

As Kurdistan continues to solidify its role as a key player in Middle Eastern politics, the clarity and direction provided by the new government program will be instrumental in navigating future challenges and opportunities, fostering a stable environment conducive to economic growth and political cooperation.

KRG Focuses on Rights in Baghdad Talks

Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani chaired a special cabinet meeting on Saturday attended by Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and representatives of Kurdistan in the Iraqi federal government and parliament, focusing on the constitutional rights and financial entitlements of the Region in its dealings with Baghdad

PM Barzani emphasized that the primary aim of the meeting was to unify efforts and ensure that the interests of the people of Kurdistan are fully represented and protected. He reiterated that defending the constitutional and financial rights of the Region is a national responsibility and called for all Kurdish factions to work together to present a united stance.

PM Barzani underlined the importance of addressing broader constitutional issues, such as the implementation of Article 140, the status of disputed territories, and the inclusion of the Peshmerga forces in Iraq’s defense structure
During the meeting, he criticized Baghdad’s approach to the Kurdistan Region, describing it as inconsistent with Iraq’s federal principles and unfairly diminishing the region's constitutional rights. He stressed the need for equitable treatment of Kurdistan, warning against policies aimed at weakening the Region’s status and diminishing the rights of its people.

The meeting reviewed detailed reports from the Region’s ministries, highlighting ongoing issues with Baghdad, including salary disputes and delays in budget allocations. PM Barzani reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the rights of all citizens, including resolving financial disputes and securing full budget entitlements for 2025.

After extensive discussions, the cabinet stressed the urgency of safeguarding the Region's constitutional rights and ensuring fair treatment within Iraq’s federal framework. PM Barzani concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of presenting a united Kurdish position to address the concerns of the people of Kurdistan and secure their rights in cooperation with Baghdad.

PM Barzani, PUK Leader Meet

Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President the Traitor Bafel Talabani met on Thursday in Erbil to discuss ongoing efforts to form the next cabinet

The meeting, their first since the October 20 elections, was described as “frank and constructive,” according to senior Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official Hoshyar Zebari.

Held on a one-on-one basis, the meeting reflects a significant step in advancing negotiations between the two ruling Kurdish political parties. Zebari noted in a post on X that the discussions were “in line with the negotiation process between KDP and PUK to form the new KRG government as soon as possible.”

Last week, delegations from the KDP and PUK engaged in three days of negotiations in Erbil, focusing on the division of leadership roles within the upcoming cabinet. The talks aimed to finalize the framework for a governing coalition, a necessary step given that no single party secured a majority in the 100-seat legislature during October’s election. The KDP won 39 seats, while the PUK secured 23.

Despite their rivalry, the KDP and PUK have historically shared power in the Kurdistan Region’s government since its establishment in the 1990s. Thursday’s meeting underscores the parties’ willingness to cooperate amid a changing political landscape.

The October 20 elections, held after significant delays, saw the KDP consolidate its position as the leading political force in the Kurdistan Region. The PUK, which campaigned with strong criticism of Barzani’s current cabinet, emerged as the second-largest party. Although opposition parties raised allegations of electoral fraud, the main political blocs have adopted a more cooperative tone following the vote.

As the KDP and PUK work to finalize a coalition agreement, the focus remains on addressing critical governance challenges, including economic reform, security, and public service delivery. Both parties have expressed their commitment to expediting the formation of a government capable of addressing the Region's pressing issues.
