Good progress in cabinet formation

The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party's (KDP) government formation negotiation team said on Monday that talks between political parties to form a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet have seen “very good” progress

Image

“Politically and technically, there is very good progress between KDP, PUK, and most other parties,” Hoshyar Zebari told Rudaw.

“The process needs time for complete understanding and coordination between all parties. So far, everything is proceeding very well,” he added.

The negotiation teams of the ruling KDP and its main rival, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), have met several times since the October 20 parliamentary elections.

The long-overdue polls resulted in a consolidation of power for the KDP which won 39 spots in the 100-seat legislature, followed by the PUK with 23.

No single party won a majority in the parliament, meaning a governing coalition will have to be formed, as has historically been the case. The KDP and PUK, while rivals, also have shared power in government since the establishment of the Kurdistan Region in the nineties.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who is also a deputy leader of the KDP, and the PUK leader Bafel Talabani met on Thursday to discuss government formation talks.

Zebari said on Friday that the meeting was “frank & constructive.”

President Barzani congratulates Trump

Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani on Monday congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th president of the United States, stating that the Kurdish region "greatly" value its "strong" ties with the US

"We greatly value our strong partnership with the U.S. and look forward to working closely to advance peace, stability, and shared values," said President Barzani on X.

Trump stormed back to the White House and emerged victorious over his Democratic challenger Kamala Harris by securing over the required 270 electoral votes.

He first took office in 2016 in a victory over former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton but lost his re-election campaign to Biden in 2020.

Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States late Monday.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also congratulated Trump

"The Kurdistan-US strategic partnership and the bond among our people and armed forces remains strong," he said on X.

US and Kurdistan enjoy strong relations, with Washington providing financial and military support to Erbil for years
The Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Region played a key role in defeating the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2017, with support from the US-led global coalition. This came after three years of the group's reign.

Kurdistan's role in stability and development

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani delivered a speech on Monday on the sidelines of the 55th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, highlighting the Kurdistan Region's role in regional stability and economic development

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Barzani expressed his satisfaction with the Kurdistan Region's continued participation in the forum. "We are pleased to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos for the second year," he stated.

The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to those involved in establishing the Kurdistan House in Davos, particularly businessman Khalid Khoshnaw, for his efforts in making the venue a hub for advancing the interests of the Kurdish people on the international stage.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Barzani paid tribute to the late Peshraw Dizayee, who was unable to attend last year's forum due to his assassination. "It is appropriate to commemorate our martyred brother, Peshraw, who was supposed to participate with us last year but could not. I am pleased that his son, Roji Peshraw Dizayee, is participating with us this year," he said.

Turning to international relations, Prime Minister Barzani acknowledged the recent swearing-in of US President Donald Trump. "Today is a historic day for the United States. On behalf of all the people of Kurdistan, we congratulate President Trump on his return to the White House.

We look forward to further developing our strategic partnership with the United States to foster peace and stability in the region. We hope for continued support in Iraq, particularly in Kurdistan, to safeguard our region and enhance economic growth."

Addressing the evolving situation in the region, Barzani emphasized the Kurdistan Region's commitment to stability and peace amid ongoing developments, particularly in Syria. "There are many important issues at play, and rapid changes are occurring.

We do not wish to become embroiled in conflicts; however, we stand ready to contribute to enhancing stability and security in the region," he stated. He highlighted the Kurdistan Region's diplomatic efforts, noting engagements with neighboring countries to prevent adverse impacts on the region.

The Prime Minister expressed optimism about the prospects for positive change. "We are committed to being part of the positive developments needed in the region. Efforts are underway in Kurdistan and Syria to align perspectives.

At the invitation of President Barzani, Mazloum Abdi visited Erbil and engaged with Syrian Kurdish parties to demonstrate unity and collectively demand their rights. We hope to reach an agreement with the new regime in Syria that ensures the rights of the Kurdish people in Western Kurdistan," he added.

Moreover, the premier announced that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) delegation returned to Baghdad today. He noted that serious work has been ongoing in Baghdad for several days to secure the financial entitlements of the Kurdistan Region.

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the Iraqi president, ministers, and members of the Iraqi parliament from the Kurdish factions for their cooperation and support.

"We are waiting for the negotiations to be implemented; the issue of financial entitlements of the Kurdistan Region will no longer be a problem between Erbil and Baghdad," he stated. "We should no longer rely solely on salaries as the primary source of income for the people of the Kurdistan Region.

I hope that the private sector will play an important role in developing the economy and economic infrastructure of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. Establish beneficial partnerships with international companies to encourage more investment in the Kurdistan Region,” he concluded.

President Barzani welcomes decision
    to annul Ba'athist resolutions
In a statement issued by Barzani Headquarters on Tuesday, President Barzani acknowledged the importance of the move, noting that it comes after a long period since the fall of the former Iraqi regime

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – President Masoud Barzani has welcomed the Iraqi parliament's recent decision to annul the resolutions issued by the dissolved Ba'ath Leadership Council, describing it as a significant step in restoring justice.

In a statement issued by Barzani Headquarters on Tuesday, President Barzani acknowledged the importance of the move, noting that it comes after a long period since the fall of the former Iraqi regime. He highlighted that the parliamentary decision to "cancel the decisions of the dissolved Ba'athist leadership council" is a vital milestone in addressing historical injustices.

President Barzani commended the Presidency of the Iraqi Parliament, the Kurdish factions in the Iraqi Parliament, and all those who contributed to the bill's passage and approval. He emphasized that the decision serves as a rightful return of privileges to those who were wronged under the Ba'athist regime
Expressing optimism, President Barzani stated that the annulment of the council's decisions could pave the way for correcting past mistakes and injustices that have negatively impacted Iraqi citizens throughout the country's history.

Later President Barzani on social media platform X wrote "What the Iraqi Parliament approved today confirms that: As long as justice prevails, it will prosper; however, if injustice prevails, it will destroy."

Kurdistan House in Davos

According to Awara Hawrami, Kurdistan24's correspondent in Davos, the Kurdistan House has become a hub for hosting presidents, leaders, and international delegations

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan House, established under Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s initiative, has returned to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos for its second year, creating opportunities for networking, dialogue, and promoting the Kurdistan Region’s economic and cultural potential on the global stage.

Expanding Activities at the Kurdistan House

The Kurdistan House in Davos, inaugurated last year, has expanded its scope in 2025.

According to Awara Hawrami, Kurdistan24's correspondent in Davos, the Kurdistan House has become a hub for hosting presidents, leaders, and international delegations.

Panels featuring Kurdish youth and notable personalities underscore the region’s unique economic and cultural opportunities, intending to attract global attention and investment.

"The Kurdistan House this year is different, with more opportunities created for discussions and networking with leaders of other countries,” Hawrami explained.

These extended activities are intended to improve the Kurdistan Region's global visibility and foster long-term economic partnerships.

Leveraging Informal Meetings for Growth

One of the key features of the WEF is the informal interactions among leaders, which normally lead to meaningful collaborations and partnerships.

The Kurdistan Region, represented by Prime Minister Barzani, intends to capitalize on these opportunities to advocate for trade, investment, and development initiatives.

Last year, such engagements aided Prime Minister Barzani in inviting various leaders to visit the Kurdistan Region, laying the foundation for robust international cooperation.

Contributions to Global Dialogue

The WEF offers a platform for tackling global challenges through dialogue and innovation.

The Kurdistan Region’s effective participation reflects its commitment to contributing to these discussions while expanding its economic and diplomatic interests.

Prime Minister Barzani’s leadership underlines the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) dedication to showcasing the region’s potential and placing it as a valued partner in the global economic and political landscape.

KDP Urges Implementation of Law
Repealing Ba’athist Land Seizures

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau has praised the Iraqi parliament’s approval of a bill to annul Ba’athist-era decisions that confiscated land from original owners, urging swift implementation by the federal government

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the KDP described the move as an “important and necessary step” toward justice and congratulated its representatives and Kurdish factions for their efforts in passing the law.

“We hope that this step will further deepen the spirit of mutual acceptance and peaceful coexistence, and strengthen the foundations of building a new Iraq,” the statement read.

The KDP also called on the federal government and relevant institutions to act promptly in implementing the legislation. “We expect the federal government to take measures to implement this law and not show indifference,” the statement added.

The law aims to return confiscated lands to their rightful owners, addressing one of the legacies of the former Ba’athist regime that disproportionately affected marginalized groups, including Kurds.

From Ankara to Davos:

Strategic Engagements Position Kurdistan at the Forefront of International Discussions

At Davos, Barzani's participation was not merely ceremonial but a strategic endeavor to articulate and advance the interests of the Kurdistan Region amidst a complex geopolitical landscape.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – From Ankara to Davos; Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s strategic engagements position Kurdistan at the forefront of international discussions, Al-Arab newspaper reported on Saturday.

As reported by Al-Arab newspaper, Prime Minister Barzani, has recently completed a series of influential meetings spanning several key global cities—from Ankara to Abu Dhabi, and from Amman to Davos. This diplomatic marathon underscores the Kurdistan Region's growing prominence on the international stage and its leadership's adept handling of complex regional and global dialogues.

Barzani's journey began in Ankara, where discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan set a collaborative tone. The tour continued in Abu Dhabi, with significant talks with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In Jordan, PM Barzani met with King Abdullah II, before capping off his diplomatic spree at the prestigious World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland
At Davos, Barzani's participation was not merely ceremonial but a strategic endeavor to articulate and advance the interests of the Kurdistan Region amidst a complex geopolitical landscape. His interactions included meetings with global leaders such as Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Foreign Affairs of France; and Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, among others.

Barzani's dialogue with these figures was crucial, particularly in light of ongoing tensions and negotiations with the federal government of Iraq. These discussions often revolved around the sensitive issues of budget allocations and the rights to oil revenues—a contentious topic given the recent halt in oil exports from Kurdistan via the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline.

During his time in Davos, as highlighted by Al-Arab, PM Barzani effectively conveyed the challenges faced by the Kurdistan Region, stemming from economic and political pressures exerted by various Iraqi political forces. These forces have often used financial and economic levers as means of political maneuvering, complicating the already delicate relationship between Erbil and Baghdad.

The culmination of this tour was marked by Barzani's advocacy for the rights and constitutional entitlements of the Kurdistan Region. His meetings underscored the need for a respectful and equitable dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad, especially in resolving the longstanding issues over budgetary allocations and oil revenue sharing.

Barzani's assertive diplomacy signifies a pivotal moment for the Kurdistan Region, as it seeks to fortify its international relationships and assert its position as a key player in regional stability and economic development. His efforts at forums like Davos are vital in ensuring that Kurdistan's voice is not only heard but also respected on the global stage
This series of engagements highlights the strategic importance of the Kurdistan Region in the Middle East and its potential role as a stabilizing force amidst regional complexities. As Kurdistan continues to navigate its path through these challenging dynamics, the leadership of figures like PM Masrour Barzani remains critical in advocating for the region's rights and in striving towards a prosperous future, Al-Arab newspaper concluded.

KRG Highlights Human Rights at UN

The Kurdistan Government (KRG) reaffirmed its commitment to advancing human rights, combating terrorism, and enhancing governance at the 48th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, a senior official said

Dindar Zebari, the KRG Coordinator for International Advocacy, outlined the region’s 2021-2025 human rights plan, developed in cooperation with legislative and judicial institutions, UN agencies, and civil society. Speaking to the UN Human Rights Council, he emphasized the KRG’s efforts to align with international standards despite ongoing challenges.

Zebari reported the prosecution of 1,456 individuals on terrorism-related charges and 689 for espionage. He highlighted collaboration with UNITAD to digitize 42,000 case files on ISIS crimes, totaling more than 408,000 pages. These efforts, he said, have facilitated the rescue of 3,579 captives and financial support for over 3,500 liberated individuals.

On legal reforms, Zebari noted progress on the draft Anti-Torture Law, with the first reading completed and further reviews underway. He stated that 32 torture cases have been referred to court, and 31 individuals have been sanctioned for acts of violence.

Addressing organized crime, the KRG has investigated 190 human trafficking cases, resulting in 62 arrests and legal action against 13 companies. Anti-corruption measures have also seen progress, with 573 cases investigated in 2024 and 97 individuals sanctioned, Zebari said.

The KRG’s social welfare initiatives include a child protection policy and the enrollment of 36,300 refugee students in Kurdistan Region schools. Environmental sustainability efforts were also highlighted, with the construction of 14 dams storing over 80 million cubic meters of water. Anti-narcotics measures have led to 5,160 arrests related to substance abuse and trafficking, supported by a dedicated fund established under Law No. 1 of 2020.

Despite financial and administrative hurdles, Zebari underscored the substantial progress achieved, with 50% of UPR recommendations implemented so far.

Peshmerga First Support Forces
    Holds Graduation Ceremony
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga First Support Forces Infantry Unit held its seventh training course graduation ceremony on Thursday at the Kani-Qirzhala military base

“It is a matter of pride that 300 brave and loyal soldiers successfully completed this course today,” said Lt. Gen. Sihad Barzani, Commander of the First Support Forces, in his speech at the ceremony.

The seventh infantry course began on Sept. 28, 2024, and was carefully designed to meet the highest international military standards. “Over the past few months, these Peshmergas have undergone intensive training in discipline, gender military integration, and essential infantry skills for the modern battlefield. Today, they are fully prepared to serve and protect Kurdistan,” Barzani stated.

He emphasized that the Support Forces Command will continue enhancing its military expertise as a professional unit through practical training under the guidance of the Ministry of Peshmerga and US-led coalition forces.

Barzani also called on coalition forces to provide military and logistical support to the Support Forces, stressing that "our enemies in the region are common."

In a related development, Deputy Minister of Peshmerga Abdulkhaliq Babiri announced at a press conference on Thursday that the unification process of Peshmerga forces is progressing rapidly.

"According to the coalition forces plan, the Peshmerga forces should be reunited by 2026, and we expect the process to be completed even sooner than that date," he said.

Regarding the Zerevani forces, Babiri revealed: "There is no decision yet to put the Zerevani forces under the Peshmerga Ministry, because their mission is different and they belong to the Interior Ministry, not Peshmerga Ministry."

"The coalition assistance is continuing and we have not received any notification about suspending it," Babiri said.

PM Barzani Leads Ceremony Honoring
    February 1st Martyrs in Erbil
On Saturday Kurdistan held a special ceremony in Erbil’s Sami Abdulrahman Park to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the February 1st tragedy, with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attending alongside families of the victims, political representatives, and foreign diplomats

The event honored those who lost their lives in the 2004 twin terrorist bombings that targeted the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) Second Branch and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) Third Branch in Erbil.

The attacks, which coincided with the first day of Eid al-Adha, killed more than 100 people and injured hundreds more. The victims included senior Kurdish politicians, officials, and civilians.

During the ceremony, PM Barzani laid a wreath at the monument dedicated to the martyrs, reaffirming the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to remembering their sacrifices.

Representatives of Kurdish political parties, government officials, and members of the diplomatic community also paid their respects.

The February 1st bombings remain one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Kurdistan’s history.

The attacks were widely condemned as an assault on the region’s stability and democratic process at a time when Iraq was undergoing significant political transition following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003.

Each year, the Kurdistan Region holds memorial events to honor the victims and highlight the continued fight against terrorism.

Officials at the ceremony reiterated their determination to uphold security and prevent such tragedies from happening again.

President Barzani’s Strategic Leadership
    Unites Kurdish Positions
Forbes highlighted that President Barzani's recent meeting with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi is a testament to his efforts in fostering Kurdish unity

Erbil (Kurdistan24)– In an era of everchanging power dynamics across the Middle East, the Kurdistan Region continues to establish its strategic importance, serving as a bulwark of stability in a landscape that is increasingly becoming volatile.

At the heart of this unwavering resilience stands President Masoud Barzani, whose leadership has not only protected the region but also placed it as a vital ally of the United States.

A recent Forbes opinion piece written by journalist Paul Iddon underlines the continuing importance of Kurdistan Region in U.S. strategic calculations.

As the report highlighted, Kurdistan Region has played a decisive role in countering the threat of the Islamic State (ISIS), with its Peshmerga forces proving instrumental in holding back the extremist group’s advances during its peak.

The report highlighted President Barzani’s recent interview with Shams TV channel where he reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Peshmerga to defending against any resurgence of ISIS.

A Reliable U.S. Ally Amid Uncertainty

The partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United States has been a crucial element in regional security since 2014, when U.S. forces returned to Iraq to combat ISIS.

While Washington has outlined plans to gradually reduce its troop presence in Iraq, the Forbes report notes that some U.S. military presence is expected to remain in Erbil “to support counter-ISIS operations in Syria until at least September 2026.”

These forces will continue to support counter-ISIS operations in Syria, particularly in the wake of the dramatic fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, which has further complicated regional power dynamics.

The report suggested that “the dramatic fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in early December 2024 has reportedly put a damper on enthusiasm in Baghdad for ejecting U.S. troops.”

The Forbes Magazine report highlights that despite pressure from pro-Iran factions in Baghdad pushing for a full withdrawal of U.S. forces, the Kurdistan Region remains a steadfast partner.

The Kurdistan Region’s autonomy and political stability make it an ideal hub for U.S. engagement in the region, providing a secure base for ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

Barzani’s Diplomatic Role in Syrian Kurdish Affairs

Beyond Iraq, President Barzani has actively worked to mediate tensions among Syria’s Kurdish factions, particularly in light of the shifting power structure in Damascus.

Forbes highlighted that President Barzani's recent meeting with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi is a testament to his efforts in fostering Kurdish unity.

According to Forbes, Barzani advised Abdi to seek dialogue, maintain political independence, and resist external influences in shaping the future of Syria’s Kurds.

President Barzani has also underlined the significance of limiting the presence of foreign Kurdish fighters, especially those affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), in Syria’s Kurdish territories.

Forbes wrote, “President Barzani expressed his view that it was time for the PKK to leave ‘Syrian Kurds alone to decide their future’ since its presence provides ‘an excuse for Turkish intervention’”.

His call for a diplomatic resolution, rather than military confrontation, highlights his vision of a peaceful and politically empowered Kurdish presence in Syria.

A Guardian Against ISIS Resurgence

One of the most pressing concerns raised in the Forbes report is the potential resurgence of ISIS due to ongoing instability in Syria.

The SDF, which has long been the primary force guarding ISIS detainees in Western Kurdistan, has raised alarms that sustained attacks from Turkish-backed militias could deteriorate their ability to secure these detention centers.

If ISIS militants were to escape and reorganize, the consequences could be dire for the entire region.

The report wrote that during the war against ISIS, the Peshmerga—despite being denied modern weaponry by Baghdad—held the front lines, securing key regions such as Kirkuk and ensuring the safety of Erbil.

Kurdistan’s Strategic Importance Moving Forward

Kurdistan Region's role extends beyond military security. As a politically stable and economically promising region, it continues to serve as a bridge between international powers and Iraq.

According to Forbes, its strategic location and governance model make it a key player in facilitating diplomatic resolutions, whether in Syria, Iraq, or broader regional disputes.

Forbes pointed to President Barzani’s interview with Shams TV, highlighting that his stance left no doubt about his commitment to humanitarian principles.

President Barzani stated in that interview that the Kurdistan Region would extend help to “any human who is exposed to injustice” if it had the means to do so.

Paul Iddon wrote, “Such comments underscore Iraqi Kurdistan’s continued strategic importance and positive role in regional stability.”

This philosophy has shaped Kurdistan’s approach to both regional politics and its longstanding alliance with the United States.

As the Middle East faces continued uncertainty, the Kurdistan Region—under Barzani’s stewardship—remains a pillar of stability. With its commitment to counterterrorism, diplomatic engagement, and regional security, it stands as a key strategic partner for Washington and a guardian of peace in a turbulent region.
