Over 40 Appeals on Election Results
More than 40 appeals have been filed against the final results of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, with 25 submitted in Sulaymaniyah, the constituency with the most appeals
The Election Commission and the Electoral Judiciary have 17 days to respond to these appeals.
Sunday, November 3, marked the final day for political parties and lists to file appeals regarding the Kurdistan parliamentary election results.
According to the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), a total of 41 complaints were submitted, including 25 in Sulaymaniyah, 12 in Erbil, three in Duhok, and one in Halabja.
“According to the law, the commission will prepare a response to the complaints within seven days and send it to the Electoral Judiciary,” IHEC spokesperson Jumana Ghalai told local media.
Article 20 of the IHEC law allows political parties three days to file appeals following the announcement of the final election results, while the Council of Commissioners must respond within seven days.
“The Electoral Judiciary will decide on the appeals within 10 days of receiving the commission’s responses,” Ghalai added.
On October 30, the IHEC announced the final results of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, following the preliminary results released on October 21.
The elections, held on October 20, saw the Kurdish ruling party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), win 39 seats, with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) securing 23 seats.
