Mohamed al-Hassan, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), praised the Kurdistan’s stability, leadership, and development
Speaking during the Sulaimani Forum on Thursday, Hassan called his first visit to the city a "pleasure," describing Sulaymaniyah as beautiful and its people as generous and talented.
He emphasized that the United Nations remains committed to its partnership with Iraq, even after the UNAMI mandate expires at the end of 2025. “Our relationship will continue, albeit in a different context—more through the UN’s specialized agencies, which is what Iraq has requested,” he stated.
- The UN envoy highlighted the Kurdistan Region as a model for investment and progress in Iraq, citing its stability as a key factor attracting international attention. “Anyone who comes to the Kurdistan Region can feel that it is a stable, prosperous, and vibrant part of Iraq,” he said
The forum and Hassan’s remarks reflect growing recognition of the Kurdistan Region’s role in diplomacy, investment, and environmental policy in Iraq and the Middle East, as Iraq prepares for UNAMI’s next phase.
