The French ban on the burkini is threatening to turn into a farce as police officers armed with pepper spray and batons marched onto a beach today and ordered a woman to strip off.

Four burly cops stood over the middle-aged woman, who had been quietly sunbathing on the Promenade des Anglais beach in Nice - yards from the scene of the Bastille Day lorry attack - and watched her take off a Muslim-style garment which protected her modesty.

It is thought the woman was given a warning about the dress code on the beach and was handed an on-the-spot fine.

Another young Muslim mother was ordered off the beach at Cannes and fined for simply wearing a headscarf.

Three armed officers pointed a pepper spray canister in the 34-year-old's face and told her she was in breach of a new rule outlawing swimming costumes that cover the entire body.

She said the 'racist' officers simply wanted to humiliate her in front of her children and other family members, even though she was not even wearing a burkini.

It was the latest in a series of incidents in the south of France and comes after video emerged of armed police waiting for Muslim women to come out of the sea at nearby Nice, and then warning them about their choice of headscarves.

And just days ago, four women were fined 38 euros for wearing their burkinis on the beach in Cannes.

Identified only as Siam, the mother is a former air-hostess from Toulouse whose family members have been French citizens for at least three generations. 'I wasn't even planning to swim, just to dip my feet,' said Siam, who was wearing leggings, a top, and a headscarf.

All of the items of clothing made Siam feel comfortable, and meant she was not exposed to the afternoon sun last Tuesday.

What she was not fully aware of, however, was that Cannes was one of a small number of towns that have banned the burkini for its alleged links to terrorism.

The beachwear does not cover the face either, and is worn by non-Muslims who want protection from the sun, but critics claim it is provocative.

When asked why she was dressed 'inappropriately', Sian replied: 'I didn't know exactly what was going on, I hadn't really followed the controversy'.

Sian at first refused to undress or to leave the beach, saying: 'My children were crying as they witnessed by humiliation'.

Mathilde Cusin, a journalist with the France 4 TV channel who witnessed the entire incident, said: 'I saw three police officers watching the beach. One of them had his finger on the trigger of his tear gas device, no doubt containing pepper.'

Then Ms Cusin said the officers went for Siam, was wearing 'a simple hijab [a headscarf that does not cover the face] around her hair'.

People then started shouting insults at Siam, telling her she was not welcome in France, and that she should 'go home'.

Ms Cusin said: 'It was pretty violent. I had the impression of a pack going after a woman sitting on the ground, crying with her daughter.'

Siam accepted an on-the-spot fine of around nine pounds, and her details were recorded on what will amount to a criminal record. She said: 'Today we are not allowed on the beach. Tomorrow, the street? Tomorrow, we'll be forbidden from practicing our religion at all?

'I'm in the country of human rights. I see no trace of the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. I am outraged that this could happen in France.'

David Lisnard, the right wing Republican Party mayor of Cannes who introduced the burkini ban in the first place, defended the police officers' behaviour.

Mr Lisnard said all 'beach dress that ostentatiously shows a religious affiliation' was unwelcome at a time when France was a target for Islamic State. He said any dress that might be linked with the terrorist group was offensive and risked provoking people, so risking public order.

On the same day, video also emerged of armed police waiting for Muslim women to come out of the sea at nearby Nice, and then warning them about their choice of headscarves.

Feiza Ben Mohamed, secretary general of the Federation of Muslims of the South of France, said ‘two young women were made to leave the water by the police’ even though they were ‘not wearing the burkini’.

The video, which was posted on Twitter, shows children crying and shouting as the women are spoken to by the officers. Ms Ben Mohamed has accused the French authorities of ‘shamefully mixing up terrorists with the wider Muslim community.’ She said ‘this type of row is totally counterproductive and plays into Isis's hands.

‘It's exactly what Isis want - the mayor is doing their work for them. Isis seeks to make our young people believe that they are excluded, stigmatised, and they will use such examples in their recruitment drive.'

The incidents come after a Muslim businessman pledged to pay fines imposed on women for wearing burkinis.

A French court has upheld the 'burkini ban' – ruling that the female swimwear was liable to cause offence and to provoke people to violence.

But wealthy Rachid Nekkaz, born in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges from Algerian immigrants, has said that he will pay any penalties that Muslim women incur for wearing the outfits.

He believes that the ban is 'unfair'.

He told CNN: 'I decided to pay for all the fines of women who wear the burkini in order to guarantee their freedom of wearing these clothes, and most of all, to neutralize the application on the ground of this oppressive and unfair law.'

The banning of the burkini in France, by the Administrative Tribunal in Nice, has been challenged by two human rights groups.

They argued that the ban on a garment that does not cover the face was petty, and designed to spread hatred against a small group of mainly Muslim mothers and grandmothers.

But judges said the ban in the resort of Villeneuve-Loubet was 'necessary, appropriate and proportionate'.

They said the burkini was 'liable to offend the religious convictions or non-convictions of other users of the beach.'

Judges also ruled the clothing could be viewed as a 'provocation exacerbating tensions' within France, which is currently under a State of Emergency following a series of attacks by Islamic State.

A lorry was used by a man claimed by Isis to kill 86 people in Nice on July 14th, in an attack which took place next to the city's main beach.

It is among around 15 where the burkini is now banned, and mayors across France are widening the measure every day.

But critics point out that 30 Muslims died in the Nice attack, including women wearing traditional clothes, including headscarves.

They point out how the French authorities are meant to support free expression, including the right to offend and provoke, and say that the burkini ban is utterly hypocritical.

Lawyers for the Human Rights League (LDH), and the Collective against Islamophobia in France (CCIF) - who challenged the ban in Nice - said they would now appeal to the Council of State, France's highest administrative court.

Around ten women have so far been criminalised for wearing burkinis on French beaches this summer.

All were reprimanded by police officers in the Riviera resort of Cannes, and forced to leave the sand.

Four were fined the equivalent of £32, while all received 'warnings' that will now technically form part of their criminal records.

The faux outrage fomented after a handful of French mayors banned the burkini represents the latest failure of Western feminism to stand up for women against the nefarious alliance between hardcore Islamists and leftists that is rolling back sexual equality globally.

The cacophony of French-bashing across the media and political spectrum in the UK and US is not only offensive to women everywhere — it is a betrayal of a significant group of Muslims in France, Francophone North Africa, and elsewhere, who have taken a stand against rising extremism.

The mainstream or “moderates” abhor the so-called “Islamic swimwear” perversely created from a mélange of the Taliban’s burka and the bikini. This politico-religious “fashion” has been encouraged and commercialized in recent years by a fundamentalist Saudi-derived Wahhabist puritanical fringe obsessed with feminine ‘modesty’ and that temptress incarnate — the female body.

Yet frothing commentators in the West, insensitive to the trauma of a nation that has suffered several years of successive terrorist attacks by jihadist fanatics who among other atrocities, demand women cover up or die, pour scorn on the French for daring to challenge the Islamo-gauchist orthodoxy. Worse, they ignore the brave Muslim dissidents of France and elsewhere fighting the imposition of a radical extremist vision of Islam and gender on the harassed silent majority of their faith.

The comments of these whistle-blowers go mostly unremarked and unreported outside Paris. Yesterday the highly respected Tunisian-born French broadcast journalist Sonia Mabrouk braved an army of trolls to declare on Twitter that “Those who mock the burkini ‘debate’ pretend to see only simple swimming attire in this provocation” and thus revealed their own “blindness” to reality. For her outspokenness Mabrouk was vilified on the social network as “f…ing stupid fool” and a “useful Arab” being wheeled out to attack Muslims. Earlier the Europe 1 and Public Senat TV presenter declared that “behind the burkini lies the Wahhabist ideology and its propaganda that is spreading insidiously and dangerously”.

Asked about the scoffing foreign press reports and among a minority of the French commentariat, Mabrouk told me she was “appalled by all these women and men who play down, and even ridicule this debate over the burkini — declaring that it is about a simple full-body swim suit”.

“This is culpable blindness. The burkini is not an anodyne item of clothing. It is a provocation in the sense that Islamism (and not Islam) is today engaged in a strategy of conquering spirits. To not see this, and to not say it, constitutes great hypocrisy. There are more and more forces who want to impose a rigorist and obscurantist Islam at the heart of Western societies, taking advantage of an absence of reference points and identity among certain men and women.”

Mabrouk insists the enemies of this rigorist Islam are firstly those Muslims who are not correctly described as “moderate” – she does not like this term – “but simply Muslims who know their religion and its practice in the private sphere”.

“This is why along with others, I consider myself a rampart and I will not shy away from these terribly sensitive issues. As soon as I speak out on these issues, I am attacked as the “useful Arab” who has “sold out” – this is the typical tactic of denigration.”

As the political reporter points out she is not alone in standing up to the ultra-radicals. Algerian-born French center-right political identity and author Lydia Guirous scolded Prime Minister Manual Valls for opposing the burkini but refusing to act firmly against it. Cairo-based editor Aalam Wassef argued in Liberation newspaper — unlike the UK, the French left-wing press refuses to publish only one view on the burkini — that the French “should not be naïve”. In Wassef’s analysis the burkini is a symbol of the Saudi-derived Wahhabist ideology of self-styled “authentic” and “pure Islam” that sees women as impure unless they are covered in public (“Neither more authentic, nor purer, Wahhabism is simply the youngest religious current, and the richest”, he says.). Wassef even demolished the alleged neutrality of the French Committee Against Islamophobia, the radical mosque and hate-preacher-linked CCIF for denouncing the burkini bans as “Islamophobic” attacks on the freedom of expression of Muslim women.

“In taking this position the CCIF is posing not as a defender not of ‘some Muslims of France’ but of a very particular extremist movement — Wahhabism of France,” he said.

The voices of the conscientious objectors are numerous and loud, yet all the foreign press and commentators harp on is the seeming assault on the liberties of these women sporting burkinis despite the tense terrorist-inflected social situation. Acclaimed Moroccan writer Tahar Ben Jalloun, who implored French Muslims to come out en masse into the streets after last month’s beheading of a Catholic priest in Normandy, has deplored the clamor for bikini bans on Morocco beaches and called for a rejection of the “vicious and perverse” “beach burka” which he says has nothing to do with real Islam.

It is one thing to debate and discuss whether the ban on the burkini at certain beaches in France is a sound political or judicial measure. But it is quite another to raucously barrack, as many Islamist champions in the Western media do under the guise of “freedom of choice” for the attire itself and even the fanaticism behind it. When do any of the madding crowd point out that the burkini-wearer’s male companions are free to parade around in board shorts and skimpy swimwear?

Better to listen to courageous voices like Mabrouk who explains that today Islamism is “waging a war of attrition on us, it is testing our resistance and our defenses” – and that this is the case with the burkini which must be taken for what it is: a direct assault on the notion that women’s bodies like men’s are not inherently “immodest”.

“The goal is to make us retreat and at the same time make us guilty regarding the freedom of these women to wear the burkini,” Mabrouk says

“I see the burkini as a standard bearer, a form of identity-obsessed exhibitionism. I believe that more than ever it is women who must lead this fight in France, in Europe and elsewhere. I was born in Tunis and after the revolution it was women who battled to guarantee and instill their rights in the new constitution. They are and we are the ramparts. Islamism wants to appropriate the bodies of women to entrench its ideological presence in people’s minds. We will not let ourselves be pushed around like this, not today and not tomorrow.”

Very true because the Quran asks women be modestly dressed in non-figure hugging clothing

Nowhere in the Quran does it say that women have to wear black sacks and look like bags of rubbish - though sadly most Muslim men treat their women like rubbish

On Monday, Jerusalem Post photographer Marc Israel Sellem went to the beach near the old port of Jaffa and photographed three women enjoying a day in the sand. One held up a phone to take a selfie, while the two others strolled by. In four municipalities in France, the outfits of two of the women might have earned them fines because they were wearing a ‘burkini,’ an all-covering swim suit that has become a center of controversy in the last week.

The contrast between Israel’s beaches and France is an example of the kind of "convivencia," or coexistence, that Israel has developed between its secular and religious publics, Arabs and Jews, Muslims and Christians. There are no burka bans in Israel. In Germany, however, the Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann of the Christian Social Union has said that “it is clear that the burka isn’t the right article of clothing for the population in Germany.” Like other politicians there, he seeks a legal remedy to the face-covering niqab. In France, the veil was banned in 2010.

Ostensibly, the support for banning the burkini in France stems from the secular values of the country.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls says that it is “not compatible with the values of France and the Republic.”

Minister of Women’s Rights Laurence Rossignol told Le Parisien that “the burkini is not some new line of swim wear – it is the beach version of the burka, and it has the same logic: hide women’s bodies in order to better control them.” She argued that women did not have a choice in the matter. “It is not just the business of those women who wear it, because it is the symbol of a political project that is hostile to diversity and women’s emancipation.” The same minister compared the head scarf, which some Muslim women wear, to “Negroes supporting slavery,” a statement that received widespread criticism in March.

This kind of toxic debate over women’s dress and Islam is in contrast to the critique of Israel often heard in Western countries. Israel is frequently criticized for its treatment of Arab and Muslim minorities. Yet it is in Israel that Muslims can build mosques and minarets as they please, in contrast to Switzerland, which passed a referendum by 57 percent of the electorate to ban minarets in 2009.

Rather than focusing on that, these countries should focus on larger issues related to values, such as women’s education and protecting women’s rights.

While Israeli society is deeply divided on religious and state issues and has its share of problems related to tolerance of different groups, it also has many strengths such as the state’s treatment of the large Islamic minority. This could serve as a model for the rest of the world. Increasingly, European countries are looking to Israel to learn how to fight terrorism.

Yet there is also a lesson they can learn about tolerance, and how to accept people who look differently and wear clothing that might seem out of place for a day at the beach.

In Israel, this affects not only Muslims, but also the large Orthodox Jewish population, parts of which adhere to very strict views on modesty.

In many ways, Israel has grappled for the last 68 years with issues that the West is facing today. For instance, there are numerous Sharia law courts in Israel. In the West, the word Sharia often conjures up images of the Taliban, but in Israel, it functions in relation to family law such as marriages, because Israel does not have civil marriage. The lack of civil marriage may be a deficiency, but allowing Muslims to practice their faith as they see fit can assuage certain disputes in society. Banning burkinis, for instance, or full-face veils, doesn’t make them go away. It merely secludes women from public life even more, accomplishing the direct opposite of those who advocate for social integration.

Western societies would do well to look to Israel for how a country can blend laws and Western attitudes with more religious societies, and in so doing balance freedom, diversity and the rights of its citizens.

Impossible to compare Israel and France : Israel is a Jewish State, France does not support ANY religion. Israel was built on a Jewish identity (half national half religious). French Republic was built AGAINST Catholic religion and monarchy.

I think those women who cover their face are Mentally ill (they are sick people who are in need of psychological treatment) their aim of wearing this is to be very offensive to the rest of society and women in particular. But i do not blame them for what they do?

I blame and condemn European hypocrits who tolerate this under the lie of Multiculturalism, and cultural relativism.

Any Women who wear this oppressive sign should not be allowed to enter any European countries, If you don't want anyone to see your face or if you are ashamed of how you look(because this might be the case) then simply stay home forever, until you are rotten (but not on State benefits as many of you do)

Burkini ban issues reaching boiling point in France

Tensions are running high on the beaches of French towns introducing the controversial burkini ban. Public reaction seems utterly divided, with some accusing police of using “Nazi” tactics, while others support the move, shouting “We are Catholics here.”

Thirty-four-year-old Siam said she was asked to pay a fine or leave La Bocca beach in Cannes for wearing a headscarf in August, L’Obs magazine reported, but the news only appeared in the media on Tuesday.

The woman said she was wearing leggings, a tunic, and a hijab, explaining “I wasn’t planning to swim… I wasn’t there to provoke anyone.”

Siam, who is originally from Toulouse, told the magazine that she was approached by three police officers who told her to remove her veil or face a fine. One of them appeared to have something resembling pepper spray.

The police officers cited the text of an order that states that people should have “correct clothing, respecting secularism, hygiene rules and security” on Cannes beaches, before asking her to remove her scarf or pay an €11 fine.

She chose to pay.

According to Siam, many beachgoers supported the officers and some went as far as applauding them.

“Racist terms were used freely… I was stunned,” she said, adding “I heard things which no one had ever said to me, like ‘Go home!’ ‘Madam, the law is the law, we’re tired of the stories’ and ‘We’re Catholics here!’”

The Muslim woman said she felt totally humiliated.

“My children were crying, witnessing my humiliation and my family… Even I could not help crying. They humiliated us,” said Siam.

Cannes Mayor David Lisnard said he had “no reason to doubt the judgment of police officers.”

Siam, a French national, said that the phrase “Go home” was especially offensive to her.

“The worst part is that I was born in France! My parents are French, my grandparents are French... When they told me ‘Go home,’ it makes me sick; it’s really racist ...”

Social media are completely furious about photos that emerged online showing a Muslim woman on a Nice beach surrounded by several police officers calling on her to immediately remove her burkini.

The incident reportedly took place in Nice Promenade des Anglais in July, when a truck driven by an IS sympathizer plowed through a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations. The tragedy killed at least 84 people.

The woman is pictured lying on the beach in a blue-and-black burkini. In other pictures she is seen surrounded by at least four police officers who are saying something to her.

The woman is later seen removing her long-sleeved top and one of the officers is allegedly seen writing a ticket. The woman apparently has to pay €38 – the fine for wearing a burkini set by French authorities.

Anthea: Were this woman indeed some sort of Muslim fundamentalist to whom the covering of her entire body is necessitated by her overly strict religious beliefs - she would NOT have taken her long-sleeved top off - she would rather have been arrested and taken to the police station than show her uncovered arms - she did this in order to provoke conflict and cause trouble - if people think otherwise then they know absolutely nothing about Islam

The photos, which have been circulating in social media since Tuesday evening, have already attracted numerous angry comments.

Some slammed the “liberal approach” of the French authorities towards Muslim women.

“Is this what being liberal looks like? Men forcing women to take clothes off?” wrote @aishagani.

Others accused the police of subjecting the woman to “public humiliation.”

“Is this public humiliation on a French beach supposed to protect the [French] Republic?” @ Pierrehaski wrote.

“I do not like burkini but I hate humiliation towards this woman. A total shame,” added another user.

"So a woman who in veil has no more rights to be lying on a French beach?” asked @Coexister75.

The burkini issue has recently become the topic of the day. One after another, more than a dozen French cities have banned it, including Cannes and several towns near Calais.

On Monday, a tribunal in Nice rejected an appeal filed by two human rights groups, ruling that the ban in the French Riviera town of Villeneuve-Loubet was “necessary, appropriate and proportionate.”

The burkini was “liable to offend the religious convictions or [religious] non-convictions of other users of the beach,” and “be felt as defiance or a provocation exacerbating tensions felt by” the town, the tribunal concluded in its statement.

You will also notice that the International community unite to search for survivors of the quake and help the injured - but would NOT offer such help to people in Syria who have had buildings flattened and people trapped due to bombing - because the latter is man-made and as such totally PREVENTABLE
