ENKS Meets Syrian Communities

Representatives of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) have held multiple meetings with various Syrian communities to discuss the country’s future and prepare for the next phase of governance

Ibrahim Bro, ENKS’s representative in the Syrian negotiating committee, shared details of the meetings on his Facebook page, highlighting the group’s engagement with diverse Syrian communities.

“During our stay in Damascus, we held several meetings and intensive visits for exchanges and discussions in preparation for the next phase,” the official wrote.

The ENKS delegation visited Suwayda province and met with Sheikh Hikmat Hijri and the family of Sultan Pasha al-Atrash, a prominent figure in Syrian history. Additionally, they held discussions with Armenian Catholic Bishop George Assdoria, Monsignor George Bahi, Zahi Tayara, Shadi Sarwa, and George Ndez.

The meetings focused on ensuring equality between all Syrian communities in terms of rights and duties and securing their participation in drafting a new Syrian constitution.

Bro also confirmed a meeting with the leadership of the Syrian Yezidi Council, including Mazkin Yousef and Sarhan Isa, as well as representatives from Aleppo and Afrin.

The consultations reflect ongoing efforts to build a new political framework for Syria that accommodates its diverse communities and ensures their inclusion in shaping the country’s future.

Kurdish participation in Damascus negotiations

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A significant diplomatic meeting took place in Qamishli, Rojava (Western Kurdistan), on Sunday, between a US delegation and the leadership of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC – or ENKS), according to KNC spokesperson Faisal Youssef in a statement to Kurdistan24

The discussions centered on three primary areas: the current situation in Syria, the importance of Kurdish unity in the present phase, and the prospect of unified Kurdish representation in the Damascus negotiations.

This meeting reflects ongoing American diplomatic efforts to facilitate cohesion among Kurdish political entities in Western Kurdistan (Rojava Kurdistani), with the aim of ensuring effective representation in negotiations with Damascus and maintaining security in Kurdish regions.

This latest diplomatic engagement follows a previous US-sponsored meeting held in Qamishli on Dec. 31, 2024, which brought together KNC representatives and Mazloum Abdi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Over 100 killed in Western Kurdistan

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Sunday that fierce clashes in Rojava Kurdistani (Western Kurdistan) over the past two days have resulted in a significant number of deaths, claiming the lives of more than 100 combatants, as hostilities deepen between Turkish-backed groups and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)

The Observatory stated that since Friday evening, violent clashes in multiple villages surrounding the city of Manbij led to the deaths of 85 members of Turkish-backed factions and 16 SDF fighters.

The conflict is reportedly fueled by Turkey's strategic support, including drone and aerial operations.

In a statement, the SDF stated it had effectively thwarted “all the attacks from Turkey’s mercenaries,” ascribing the intensification of clashes to Turkish military support.

The rekindled conflicts overlap with a broader campaign by Turkish-aligned factions, including Islamist-led rebels, who have attempted to expand their territorial control since November 27.

On that date, an offensive led by these groups resulted in the capture of Manbij and Tal Rifaat from the SDF.

As stated by Rami Abdel Rahman, the director of the Observatory, the ultimate aim of Turkish-backed forces is to control Kobani and Tabqa, with a longer-term objective of moving toward Raqqa, the former de facto capital of the Islamic State group.

The SDF, a Kurdish-led alliance supported by the United States, governs large swaths of northeastern Syria, including parts of Deir Ezzor province.

The group established an Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in areas evacuated by the Syrian government amid the civil war that erupted in 2011.

Over the years, the SDF has played a vital role in the fight against ISIS, markedly liberating Raqqa in 2017.

Turkey, however, sees the SDF as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a designated terrorist organization that has waged an insurgency in Turkey since the 1980s.

This has made the SDF a recurrent target of Turkish military operations, with Ankara accusing the group of threatening its national security.

ENKS representative urges
    PKK ban from Syria
A Kurdish National Council (ENKS/KNC) representative on Sunday said that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) must be banned from Syria to safeguard the rights of Kurds

“What is the Kurds’ business in Manbij and Tishreen Dam? Why are the Kurds there? We as the ENKS want to form a joint delegation…The PKK still rules there. We say separate yourselves from the PKK because their presence creates hesitation,” said Abdulhakim Bashar, an ENKS representative.

He added that the Syrian National Army (SNA) attacks on Manbij, Tishreen Dam, and Kobane were all caused by alleged PKK presence.

The ENKS is an umbrella group of Kurdish opposition parties in Western Kurdistan (Rojava Kurdistani). They have been in constant rivalry with the ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) over influence in Western Kurdistan, and accuse the latter of having ties with the PKK.

“Let them expel the PKK, cut off their ties with the PKK, and expel foreigners from among themselves. Then, if Kobane is attacked, I will have a different opinion,” he stated.

Bashar has previously claimed that senior PKK commanders exert heavy influence on the ruling PYD, to the ire of Turkey, with the PKK being designated a terrorist organization by Ankara.

There are calls for a unified Kurdish front amid efforts to resume talks between feuding Kurdish parties in Western Kurdistan
Mazloum Abdi, chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), held a meeting late last month with ENKS to pave the way for resolving tensions and resuming talks.

Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last week, the Kurdish National Unity Parties (PYNK) expressed readiness to return to talks with the ENKS. The PYNK is a coalition of 24 parties that have close ties with the PYD and have representatives in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES).

Bashar met with Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to discuss his activities during the 20-day trip to Damascus with different authorities and components in the country.

“Masoud Barzani said briefly, ‘If you accept my advice, you Syrian Kurds should be together and whatever is needed for the rights of the Kurdish people and whatever help I can give, I am ready,” Bashar said
He also highlighted that during his trip he saw that the Syrian people were very happy to have their newfound freedom of speech.

However, they still had fears as the new authority in Syria had an Islamist background. The ENKS deputy said that one thing was obvious, which is that “the Syrian people have made their own decision and will not accept a one-sided regime, whether Islamist or non-Islamist. One party, one force, one person can no longer rule Syria.”

Turkey Vows to Eliminate Fighters

Turkey declared on Monday that it is “only a matter of time” before Syrian Kurdish fighters are eliminated, emphasising its stance against the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which it considers a terror group linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)

“Conditions in Syria have changed. We believe it’s only a matter of time before PKK/YPG is eliminated,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during a press conference in Ankara.

The YPG, a key component of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has been instrumental in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

However, Turkey views the group as a security threat due to its ties to the PKK, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU.

Fidan warned Western nations against supporting Kurdish fighters, stating, “If you have different aims in the region, if you want to serve another policy by using ISIS as an excuse to embolden the PKK, then there is no way for that either.”

The comments followed a meeting between Fidan and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, during which they discussed the threat posed by ISIS in Syria and the region after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime to Islamist-led rebels.

“We discussed what we can do together against the threat of ISIS in Syria and the region,” Fidan said, highlighting the importance of preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State.

“ISIS is a poison for Muslim societies. Using our religion to brutally kill people and create chaos is not something we will remain silent about.”
Turkey has reiterated its commitment to combating both ISIS and groups it deems terrorist threats, maintaining its stance as a key regional player in shaping Syria’s future.

Macron support for Western Kurdistan

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron delivered strong assurances of continued support for Kurdish forces in Western Kurdistan during his annual diplomatic address, while outlining France's broader strategic vision for regional stability and international engagement

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the West must not be naive about the new authorities in Syria after the overthrowing of Bashar al-Assad and promised France would not abandon Kurdish fighters.

"We must regard the regime change in Syria without naivety," Macron said in a speech to French ambassadors after Islamist-led forces toppled Assad on Dec. 8, 2024.

In his address to French ambassadors, Macron emphasized France's unwavering commitment to Kurdish allies, stating, France would not abandon "freedom fighters, like the Kurds" who are fighting extremist groups in Syria.

The French president specifically acknowledged Kurdish forces' crucial role in confronting terrorist organizations, particularly their sustained resistance against ISIS.

The French president also spoke about broader regional challenges, particularly describing Iran as "the main strategic and security challenge for France, the Europeans, the entire region and beyond," indicating continued diplomatic tension with Tehran.

This diplomatic position comes amid developing regional dynamics and echoes France's strategic interests in the Middle East.

Macron's explicit support for Syrian Kurdish forces signifies an extension of France's established policy of backing Kurdish-led anti-ISIS operations while promoting minority rights within Syria's political framework.

The timing of these statements conveys particular significance given ongoing regional tensions and shifting alliances in the Middle East.

The emphasis on backing Kurdish forces while concurrently advocating for inclusive Syrian governance underlines the complex balance France seeks to maintain in its Middle Eastern diplomatic strategy, especially as regional powers continue to vie for influence in post-conflict Syria.
