Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 WILL 'be found in the next year', vows search official

Martin Dolan, of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau - who is leading the search in the southern Indian Ocean - is confident the wreckage will be found soon.

It has been 500 days since the Boeing 777 went missing with its 239 passengers and crew as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 last year.

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak said at the time the plane's transponder, which emits signals, was "deliberately disabled".

The latest data shows it then continued for at least seven hours before crashing into the Indian Ocean.

But despite the most expensive search in aviation history not a single trace of the aircraft, its contents or passengers have been found.

Mr Dolan said: "Once we started looking and defining the search area, it became quite clear it could take up to two years.

"We still remain confident it will be found in the next year.

"All the analysis we have puts the aircraft somewhere in that large search area.

"We have no more information that would allow us to calculate a different area and governments accept that."

Half of the 120,000sq km area has been searched so far, with the next half due to be scoured over the next year.

There have been numerous theories over the past year of where the plane could have possibly gone down, with various witnesses saying it could be in the Bay of Bengal after seeing a low-flying aircraft over the Maldives at the time of MH370's disappearance.

But Mr Dolan has rejected these theories, saying: "All the information we have puts the aircraft in this defined search area.

"The crews and equipment being used are excellent and the data we're receiving is of a quality beyond the specifications yet.

"If we have to search the entire area, it will be completed this time next year but we expect to find the aircraft before then."

I don't suppose now that they expect to find them alive ?

Something happened probably like that suicidal German pilot who crashed the plane in Alpes.

I feel so sorry for the poor families waiting for all these months while for some form of closure

At first hoping and praying for their relations to be found alive then having to see all the different conspiracy theories

Cannot have been easy for those families - let us hope that they have answers soon

MH370: Six 'theories' why plane vanished

Conspiracy theories have flourished in the six-month-old Malaysia Airline mystery, from the sinister to the far-fetched

Aviation experts believe that what happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may never be proved - but that hasn't stopped a vocal global community of conspiracy theorists from trying.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished from radars in March last year, and until now investigators and aviation experts have said they remain in the dark about what happened to the plane and why.

Malaysia's government released a statement formally declaring the crash of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 an accident at the start of this year.

"The story is in stasis, and that's where it's likely to stay, probably for ever," said David Learmount, the operations and safety editor for the aviation website Flightglobal said at the time. "Getting used to that idea is the difficult bit."

MH370: debris found on Reunion 'is from Boeing 777

Experts say modelling of ocean currents showed that MH370 wreckage would drift to the area around Reunion Island and that more debris is likely to emerge.

Image

Professor Charitha Pattiaratchi, from the University of Western Australia, said the aircraft part “can only have come from” the current search zone.

He has used computer modelling to show that currents in the Indian Ocean would carry wreckage from the search zone off the Australian coast to either south-east Africa, Tasmania or the Western Australian coast within 24 months.

“This [the wreckage at Reunion] has to come from that region where they are searching at the moment,” he told The Telegraph.

“It is entirely consistent with what we know about the ocean currents from our computer modelling. The debris coming in there can only have originated to the east of the region where they found it. The current goes anticlockwise. It goes north from the crash site and then goes west.”

Professor Pattiaratchi said modelling showed that wreckage would emerge in the region around Reunion Island within 18 to 24 months but current speeds were not uniform and difficult to predict. The MH370 aircraft went missing almost 17 months ago.

“The ocean is not like a river - the currents go around in eddies, not in just straight lines,” he said.

“If this came from the MH370, other pieces will most likely be coming in the region.”

MH370 search: Could debris be from missing plane?

The discovery of an aeroplane part on the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean is being investigated to see if it came from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The plane disappeared between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing in March 2014 with 239 people on board - no trace has ever been found.

What are the chances this find will solve one of the biggest aviation mysteries ever?

Flight MH370: French lab to inspect debris found on La Réunion

Malaysian officials expressed confidence that a piece of aircraft debris washed up on a beach on the Indian Ocean island of La Réunion is from a Boeing 777 jet, increasing the likelihood it comes from flight MH370, the Malaysia Airlines aircraft that disappeared 17 months ago without a trace.

Image

Najib Razak, Malaysia’s prime minister, confirmed earlier comments by one of his ministers that the piece of wreckage was almost certainly from a Boeing 777 aircraft.

“Initial reports suggest that the debris is very likely to be from a Boeing 777, but we need to verify whether it is from flight MH370. At this stage it is too early to speculate,” Mr Najib wrote on his official blog.

If the part is from a 777 twin-engined jet, it is highly likely to be from MH370, since other known losses of the aircraft type — including last year’s shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine — have occurred over land.

Mr Najib said the piece of debris would be sent to a laboratory in Toulouse, France, for inspection by air crash investigators from the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses. La Réunion is a French territory east of Madagascar, which under international law makes the BEA the lead investigative body.

Mr Najib said he had despatched two Malaysian teams of investigators — one to Toulouse and the other to the island. It is likely to take several days to identify the debris.

The Malaysians, Australians and Chinese have been conducting an extensive search for the aircraft off the west coast of Australia since it disappeared on March 8 2014. The jet was carrying 239 people on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Warren Truss, Australia’s deputy prime minister, described the discovery of the debris as a very significant development. “It’s the first real evidence that there’s a possibility that part of the aircraft may have been found,” he said. But he cautioned: “It’s too early to make that judgment, but clearly we’re treating this as a major lead.”

There were also unconfirmed reports that a badly damaged piece of luggage has been found close to where the piece of the aircraft washed up on La Réunion. Journalist Julien Delarue, who works for a local newspaper, posted a photograph of the suitcase on Twitter. It is not known whether the luggage came from MH370.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said on Thursday that the discovery of the wreckage on the island was “not inconsistent with the current search location” which is 4,200km east of La Réunion.

The search teams are working on the theory that MH370s crashed within a 120,000 sq km area of the southern Indian Ocean, 1,800km south-west of Australia,

If the part is from the missing flight, it could provide critical clues to the fate of MH370: radar tracking showed the aircraft changed course to the west after heading north-east from Kuala Lumpur en route to Beijing without any further communication from the pilots.

MH370: New debris found isn't plane part

A new piece of debris found on the French island of Reunion has turned out to be a "domestic ladder" and doesn't belong to a plane.

Workers search for possible additional airplane debris near the shore where an airplane wing part was washed up on the north coast of the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.

Malaysian Director General of Civil Aviation Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told The Associated Press it had nothing to do with the investigation involving the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

"I read all over media it (the new debris) was part of a door," he told the AP by phone from France.

"But I checked with the Civil Aviation Authority, and people on the ground in Reunion, and it was just a domestic ladder."

Malaysian government officials will ask territories near Reunion to alert them if they find any debris that could be from a plane, a transport ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

A wing flap suspected to be from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was on Reunion.

MH370: Malaysian PM confirms Réunion debris is from missing flight

First official confirmation that part of wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight, which disappeared in March 2014 with 239 people on board, has been found

A piece of wing debris washed-up last week on the Indian Ocean island of Réunion was from flight MH370, the Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak confirmed on Wednesday.

French investigators to give press conference on their investigation after Malaysian prime minister confirms Réunion debris is from missing Boeing 777

“Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts has conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris ... is indeed MH370,” Razak told journalists.

The Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared on 8 March 2014 when it inexplicably veered off course en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

The two-metre-long flaperon is the only wreckage so far recovered from the flight. A colossal multinational hunt for the aircraft including a search of the sea bed off the west coast of Australia, where it is presumed to have crashed, has so far proved fruitless.

“We now have physical evidence that, as I announced on 24th March last year, flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” Najib said.

“The burden and uncertainty faced by the families during this time has been unspeakable. It is my hope that this confirmation, however tragic and painful, will at least bring certainty to the families and loved ones of the 239 people onboard MH370. They have our deepest sympathy and prayers,” he said.

The wing part is currently in the south-western French city of Toulouse, where it is being examined by investigators.

what confirmation? French investigators have not confirmed it. They said probably it was from the doomed Malaysian passenger plane. They are not sure.

MH370 search: Families vent anger over inquiry

Image
Chinese relatives gathered outside the Malaysia Airlines offices in Beijing to express their anger

Relatives of those missing on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 have vented anger at apparent mixed signals over whether part of the plane has been found.

Malaysian PM Najib Razak said experts in France had "conclusively confirmed" the wing part found on an island in the Indian Ocean was from the aircraft.

But French investigators stopped short of confirming the link, only saying it was highly likely.

Chinese relatives staged a protest outside the airline's Beijing offices.

The Boeing 777 was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March 2014 when it vanished from radar. It had 239 people on board, most of them Chinese.

Debris found on the remote French island of Reunion a week ago - a wing part known as a flaperon - was the first possible physical trace of the aircraft.

Experts in the French city of Toulouse resumed their tests on the object on Thursday.

In another development, the Malaysian transport minister said more suspected plane debris had been found on Reunion, including window panes and seat cushions.

Liow Tiong Lai said the items had been sent to French authorities to be verified.

However, French investigators quoted by AFP news agency said no new debris had been received.

Mr Liow also said elements of the flaperon, including the paint colour, matched with maintenance records for the missing flight.

The lack of unity over whether parts of MH370 had been found has angered many of the families of those missing.

You are correct it appears the French team are not entirely happy:

Mr Liow said he understood why the French team had been less categorical.

"We respect their decision to continue with their verification," he said

It must be a terrible time for the relations

If it is indeed part of the wreckages then what was it doing all the way over there?
