Malaysia Airlines did not meet its own rules for tracking the location of lost Flight MH370 while it was in the air, a new book has claimed.

The Boeing 777, which was carrying 239 passengers and crew, disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Investigators have still not determined the exact course the plane took on March 8, 2014, or recovered all the wreckage.

Now, in The Crash Detectives, journalist Christine Negroni has accused the Kuala Lumpur-based carrier of failing to ensure the doomed aircraft was constantly tracked.

She wrote that company rules said the location of all aeroplanes should be monitored - by sending regular bursts of data to a controller on the ground - 'through all phases of the flight'.

But Negroni said a report by internal auditors, undertaken in April 2013, found the carrier's planes were not meeting this requirement and, by law, should not have been cleared to fly.

She also claimed that Malaysia's acting transport minister when the plane disappeared, Hishammuddin Hussein, knew about this audit but did not admit this to reporters.

Acting transport minister Hussein told a press conference convened two days after the flight disappeared that the government had 'nothing to hide'.

'The airline was informed by its own staff that it was unable to comply with tracking regulations,' Negroni told thedailybeast.com.

Auditors reports seen by Negroni did not say how frequently aeroplanes should be tracked.

But she discovered that Malaysia Airlines' long haul flights now send tracking information every five minutes.

American lawyer Blaine Alan Gibson is carrying out a one-man investigation into the fate of MH370, and found a piece of wreckage from the aircraft in March.

An Australian-led operation is scouring the seafloor within a remote 120,000-square-kilometre (46,000-square-mile) belt of the Indian Ocean where authorities believe the passenger jet went down.

The search is nearly finished, however, and families are bracing for it to be called off.

MH370 relatives go to Madagascar in search of debris

Relatives of those who died oonn board Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 are travelling to Madagascar to lobby for the search for debris from the missing aircraft to be expanded

They said in advance of their trip that if necessary, they would take the search into their own hands.

All debris thought to be from the plane has so far been found in east Africa.

The plane disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 with 239 people on board.

It is thought that missing jet is most likely to have crashed into the southern Indian Ocean.

Campaigner Grace Subathirai Nathan, whose mother was on the plane, is making the self-funded journey with six other MH370 relatives - three from Malaysia, two from China and one from France.

"It has fallen into our hands to take on this search upon ourselves," she told reporters at Kuala Lumpur airport.

"After repeated requests for mobilisation of a search along the east African coastline, nothing has been done to date."

The families of those on board the flight say that the search for wreckage has not been systematic and that some possible findings appear to have been ignored.

The search for MG370 has concentrated off Australia's west coast, but no debris has been found there. It is due to be suspended early next year unless it makes a significant new discovery.

So far, at least six pieces have been found in east Africa that are considered certain or highly likely to have come from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight.

The relatives say they will hand out brochures when in Madagascar that will provide advice to villagers on how to recognise aircraft debris.



Their trip will last until 11 December, a statement posted on Facebook by the group Voice 370 said.

Voice 370 said last month that it had "no other choice except to take it upon ourselves to do something to find answers and closure".

Malaysia is in charge of co-ordinating the collection of any suspected debris, most of which has been sent to Australia for examination.

The Malaysian authorities in September responded to criticism of delays in retrieving suspected debris, arguing that they were acting on possible discoveries and that everyone should "allow the experts to conduct the verification processes".

MH370: Plane 'not likely to be in search area', say investigators

Experts leading the hunt for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 have said the plane is unlikely to be found in the current search area, and recommended looking further north.

No trace of the plane has been recovered in the southern Indian Ocean, after more than two years of searching.

MH370 disappeared while flying to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 people on board in 2014.

With the search to end soon, Australian officials say it will not be extended.

Australia's Transport Minister Darren Chester said the search would be unlikely to go beyond the scheduled end of January or February 2017 as the report does not give a "specific location" for the aircraft.

The governments of Australia, Malaysia and China, who are funding the search, had previously agreed that "we will be suspending the search unless credible evidence is available" that identifies the location, he said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), tasked to coordinate the search, convened a review with a multi-national team of aviation and science experts in November.

Its latest report, based on that meeting, said "there is a high degree of confidence that the previously identified underwater area searched to date does not contain the missing aircraft".

Search vessels have been looking in a 120,000 sq km (46,332 sq miles) part of the southern Indian Ocean.

Experts identified a new area of approximately 25,000 sq km to the north of the current search area that had the "highest probability" of containing the wreckage.

"The participants of the First Principles Review were in agreement on the need to search an additional area representing approximately 25,000 km²".

This was the last area the plane could possibly be located, given current evidence, the report said.

Their conclusion was based on new flight simulations and analysis of satellite communications, as well as drift modelling patterns based on the timing and locations of the discovery of debris.

Some debris pieces confirmed to be from MH370 have been found along the African coast and islands in the Indian Ocean by private citizens in recent months.

The experts also said the plane was on an "unstable flight path" and that its wing flaps were in a retracted position, in line with earlier findings by the ATSB that the plane made a "rapid and uncontrolled descent".

The ATSB said it had presented the recommendation to the Malaysian, Chinese and Australian governments.

Only one vessel is left searching for the plane in the current search area.

On November 7, 1872, the 282-ton brigantine Mary Celeste set sail from New York Harbor on its way to Genoa, Italy. On board were the ship’s captain, Benjamin S. Briggs, his wife, Sarah, and their 2-year-old daughter, Sophia, along with eight crewmembers. Less than a month later, on December 5, a passing British ship called Dei Gratia spotted Mary Celeste at full sail and adrift about 400 miles east of the Azores, with no sign of the captain, his family or any of the crew. Aside from several feet of water in the hold and a missing lifeboat, the ship was undamaged and loaded with six months’ worth of food and water.

Mary Celeste had a shadowy past. Originally christened Amazon, it was given a new name after a series of mishaps (including the sudden illness and death of its first captain and a collision with another ship in the English Channel). An investigation into whether to grant payment by its insurers to the Dei Gratia’s crew for salvaging the “ghost ship” found no evidence of foul play. Mary Celeste would sail under different owners for 12 years before its last captain deliberately ran it aground in Haiti as part of an attempted insurance fraud. In 2001, best-selling novelist and adventurer Clive Cussler claimed to have found the wreck of Mary Celeste, but later analysis of the timbers retrieved from the ship he found showed the wood was still living at least a decade after Mary Celeste sank.

Meanwhile, one of the most famous maritime mysteries in history endures: Why would an experienced captain such as Briggs, or his sailors, abandon a perfectly sound ship?

Theories over the years have ranged from mutiny and pirate attack to assault by giant octopus or sea monster, while the more scientifically minded proposed an explosion caused by fumes from the 1,700 barrels of crude alcohol in the ship’s hold. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle even weighed in with a short story published in 1884, in which the inhabitants of the ghost ship fell victim to an ex-slave seeking vengeance. On the less-sensationalized end, an investigation chronicled in the 2007 documentary “The True Story of the Mary Celeste” was able to offer no definite conclusion, but did suggest a scenario in which a faulty chronometer, rough seas and a clogged onboard pump could have led Briggs to order the ship abandoned shortly after sighting land on November 25, 1872. According to the last entry in the ship’s log book, made that morning, Mary Celeste was within sight of the Azores island of Santa Maria, some 500 miles from where the Dei Gratia would find it nine days later.

Families of the victims of flight MH370 say a decision to halt the search for the Malaysian airliner that vanished in March 2014 is "irresponsible".

Voice370 said the search ought to be expanded - it was "an inescapable duty owed to the flying public".

The plane vanished en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 on board.

More than 120,000 sq km (46,300 miles) of the Indian Ocean has been searched with no results. Pieces of debris have been found as far away as Madagascar.

But only seven have been identified as definitely or highly likely to be from the Boeing 777.

The underwater search discovered new volcanoes, anchors, long lost ships. Its sonar mapped an area of seabed less well known than the surface of the Moon. The sea gave up many secrets but it didn't give up MH370.

There were false alarms. At one point the search team rang the prime minister of Australia and told him to get ready to make an announcement. But when they sent down cameras on a drone to look at the odd shaped lump, they just found another ship wreck.

The experts on the boats had to cope with some of the worst weather on Earth, many days' sailing from help. No helicopter could reach where they were looking.

They were desperate to solve this mystery, but drew a blank.

So what next?

The pain of not knowing is as sharp for the families as it was two years ago and they will lobby hard to keep looking. New scientific drift analysis suggests that MH370 came down slightly further north of where they were looking. There is a chance that private companies could fund a new search. Maybe Boeing?

But for now the hunt for MH370 is all but over, leaving the way open for internet "theorists" to fill in the blanks.

Announcing the suspension, Australia, Malaysia and China said "no new information has been discovered to determine the specific location of the aircraft" despite numerous studies.

They remained hopeful this would happen in the future.

However, Voice370, a family support group, said the search must continue and be extended to include an area of some 25,000 sq km north of the current one, recommended by a report released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau last December.

"Stopping at this stage is nothing short of irresponsible, and betrays a shocking lack of faith in the data, tools and recommendations of an array of official experts assembled by the authorities themselves."

A report in November 2016 said the plane probably made a "high and increasing rate of descent" into the Indian Ocean.

We all know that with the capabilities of modern satellite imagery, it should have been comparatively easy to locate something the size of a Boeing 777
