£20,000 reward offered for information

A £20,000 reward has been offered for information on the shooting of a 35-year-old man in Croydon, south-east London.

Leroy Mitchell, was shot in a car park on Birdhurst Road, Croydon, in the early hours of 2 October after leaving a silent disco.

His family have released an open letter paying tribute to their son saying "there should be no silence on the streets" around his death.

The charity Crimestoppers stressed anonymity was guaranteed.

The father-of-three had been due to start a job as a Royal Mail lorry driver on the Monday after he was killed.

His family have released a letter to those responsible for his death outlining how he was a "central part of our family" who was "always sporting a cheeky grin" and "loved us to all be close".

They said he met his fiancee Louise 17 years ago and had "three sweet children who we call his 'mini-mes'".

His mother described how she said goodbye to her son at his funeral last week and urged people to come forward with information about his killing.

'You have broken dozens of people's hearts'

She said: "I cannot believe that, this Christmas and every Christmas after this, my family will be without one of their most valued members, and my grandchildren will be without their father.

"Whilst the person or people responsible for Leroy's death are free, there should be no silence on the streets."

The £20,000 reward is offered for information that leads to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Leroy Mitchell's murder.

Alexa Loukas, Crimestoppers' London regional manager stressed the charity was independent of the police, and that anonymity was guaranteed.

"Leroy's family and friends have been left devastated and are desperate for answers as to what exactly has happened to him.

"Every single day they have to live with the consequences that Leroy has been cruelly taken away."

Following Mr Mitchell's death, a 25-year-old man was arrested and released on bail to return to a south London police station.

The stabbing happened just a short walk away from West Croydon station

A man has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed in the back on a Croydon street.

Emergency services were called shortly after 12.30pm today (Wednesday, December 15) to the scene on Derby Road, near West Croydon station

The victim was found with injuries to his back and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service (LAS) paramedics.

Thankfully his condition has been assessed as non life-threatening.

So far no arrests have been made but police are calling on members of the public to come forward with information.

Officers from the Met Police have closed a South London road and erected a cordon in the area following a knife attack.

Police confirmed that a man in his 20s was found on Brockley Road in Brockley with knife injuries and rushed to hospital for treatment.

Police were called to the incident just before 3.30pm on Tuesday (December 28) following reports of an injured man.

The young man was rushed to a South London hospital by London Ambulance Service (LAS) and later in the day police confirmed that he suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The updated police statement said: "At the scene a male, aged 20s, was found with knife injuries.

"He was taken by LAS to a south London hospital. His condition has been assessed as non life-threatening."

In response Brockley Road was shut down both ways from Braxfield Road to Adelaide Avenue.

Photos believed to have been taken at the scene of the incident show a number of emergency vehicles and a large cordon in place.

At this stage there have been no arrests.

Fifteen-year-old among six knifed in three double stabbings across London

15-year-old boy was among six people stabbed within hours of each other in three separate knife attacks in a bloody night across the capital on Wednesday.

Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed at Seven Kings railway station in east London at about 4pm.

An hour later two men, in their 20s, were rushed to hospital after being stabbed close to a barbers shop in Kilburn High Road.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a man with stab wounds. A second man was found with knife injuries nearby on Cavendish Road.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police were then called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of an assault on Cowley Road, Brixton at 8pm.

Officers found a boy, believed to be aged 17-years-old, suffering from multiple stab injuries and “immediately” provided first aid.

A second teenager, believed to be a 15-years-old, was then found nearby with a stab injury.

They were both taken to hospital for treatment where neither were deemed to have life-threatening injuries.

There have been no arrests but police said enquiries continue.

Another teen murdered in Croydon

Detectives are investigating after a teenager died with stab injuries in Croydon

Police said at about 7pm on Thursday officers attended reports of an assault in Ashburton Park, Croydon.

Officers found a 15-year-old boy with stab injuries. Officers immediately provided first aid prior to the arrival of the London Ambulance Service.

Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

Formal identification has not taken place. A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command have been informed.

A crime scene remains in place.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

This is the 29th teenage homicide to have taken place in London so far in 2021.

This figure surpasses the 27 teenage homicides recorded in 2017.

The previous peak before 2017 was 29 teen homicides in the capital in 2008.

Zaian Aimable-Lina was found fatally injured after police were called to Ashburton Park in Croydon shortly after 19:00 GMT on Thursday over reports of an assault.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday but was bailed until late January, police said.

Zaian's death marked the 29th killing of a teenager in London in 2021.

Chaperones for school walk

Children are being helped by adult chaperones on their way to and from school in high-crime inner city areas

The £1.2m project is being piloted in the West Midlands with support from the Home Office and the Police and Crime Commissioner.

Participating schools were selected on police intelligence about criminal activity in their neighbourhoods.

It is based on a successful scheme which helped reduce crime in the US city of Chicago.

Among the schools taking part in the scheme - called Step Together - is The Ark Boulton Academy, a secondary school in the inner-city Sparkhill area of Birmingham.

At the beginning and end of the day a small group of adults gather at the school gates to act as chaperones for the children as they walk between home and school. Others are stationed in nearby parks.

The school was chosen, along with more than a dozen others in the West Midlands police force area, because there have been problems with anti-social behaviour and gang crime nearby.

Danny Richards, the school's head teacher, hopes the scheme will provide pupils with added reassurance about their safety.

He said: "The chaperones are in the prominent places if you like, so they are easily identifiable by the students. They are on key routes home and also in areas that are known hot spots."

The idea is to offer children a point of safety, and to act as a deterrent to anyone intent on wrongdoing.

The West Midlands has been blighted by attacks on teenagers in the hours after school in recent years.

Keon Lincoln, 15, was murdered outside his home in Handsworth 12 months ago, and in December, 18-year-old Yahya Sharif was stabbed to death in Small Heath.

Muhammad Al-Muzamil, the head boy at Ark Boulton Academy, said he believed the presence of the chaperones has made students feel safer.

"Thankfully, none of us ever been involved in such violence across the streets," he said.

"But we do know... well the dangers of the world are out there, and you want to be protected in such situations."

Areeba Ahsan, the head girl, said that if there was a problem it would be easier for teenagers to to speak to an adult that they know.

"Every student should get the chance to go home safely. It's more scary to go to a stranger to ask for help."

The chaperones come from groups who already have a presence in the areas they operate in, as well as a relationship with the schools.

In Sparkhill, they come from the youth development programme, Make A Difference. They do an hour pre-school and several post-school, as well as a day's work in-between.

Callam Dunne, one of the chaperones, took me to one of the parks they patrol. It is where locals gather to play impromptu games of football and cricket, but there have been problems here too.

Weapons are regularly found stashed in the undergrowth, including a machete which was retrieved recently.

He said: "When bad things happen, it's not often in the eyesight of the public. That's why green areas and big parks like this are often places where a lot of things will happen."

Callam believes that because the chaperones spend so much time with the children, they get a sixth sense if something is wrong and can immediately detect if there's likely to be trouble.

The scheme is being assessed and new schools will join the pilot this term.

If it is a success, it is hoped chaperones could become a more common sight elsewhere in England and Wales

Man knifed to death in west London

Murder squad detectives were on Tuesday trawling for clues after a man was stabbed to death on a west London high street in the first killing of 2022

The victim, a man in his 40s, was stabbed to death in Yiewsley High Street, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police were called to the scene at 12.12am but the man died from his injuries half an hour later.

Chief Superintendent Sean Wilson, West Area BCU said: “Following the tragic incident in the early hours of this morning our thoughts are with the family of the victim.

“There will be an increased police presence in West Drayton and if you have any information in relation to these incidents, please speak to our officers.

“Although the location is close to the fatal stabbing that occurred on 30th December, at this time the incidents do not appear to be linked.”

A mother of three who lives nearby said: “We heard some shouting in the street but it was late and we just thought it was drunks.

“Then the street was flooded with flashing blue lights and there were police everywhere. They were running in all directions and seemed to be hunting for someone.

“The paramedics worked so hard to save him we are all gutted. There was a teenager killed near here last week as well. What a terrible start to the new year.”

A local shopkeeper, 41, said: “It’s a close community here and we are all feeling it. I live and work in the community. I saw the police arrive out thought was ‘oh no not another one’.

“The crime around here is getting worse it’s like we are under siege from criminality.”

No arrests have been made so far and road closures remain in place.

Forensic officers were scouring the crime scene on Yiewsley High Street on Tuesday. West Drayton station was closed as much of the street was cordoned off by police tape.

Drive-by shooting in Streatham

A man was found with head injuries by Tooting Bec Lido after shots were reportedly fired in a Sainsbury’s car park.

The victim, in his 20s, is in a stable condition in hospital with police trying to investigate how he suffered his injuries.

Armed police were called to Sainsbury’s supermarket after reports of shots being fired from a car on Streatham High Road at 8.15pm on Wednesday.

A witness told The Sun: “I came to get a bit of shopping and everything seemed fine.

“The next minute security staff started running towards the entrance and they shouted that there had been a shooting.

“The staff said it was a drive-by shooting and three guys were apparently involved.

“When they made off, they hit a road sign.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called at 20:16hrs on Wednesday, 2 March to reports of a firearms discharge in Streatham High Road.

“Armed officers attended along with London Ambulance Service. A search of the area was carried out and a man, aged in his 20s, was found with head injuries near to Tooting Bec Lido.

“He was taken to hospital where his condition was assessed as not life-threatening.

“Officers are working to establish how the man received his injuries. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”

Shocking video has emerged of the moment a man flees the scene of a Hackney shooting carrying a jungle machete

A 17-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after being shot in Gilpin Square, Clapton, on Monday.

He rode into the square at 1.30pm on a motorbike with a friend when he was confronted by four or five masked males”.

The teenager was shot and the group quickly scattered.

A video filmed by a resident in a tower appears to show a man carrying a machete fall over.

The young man gets to his feet and sprints past a nearby off-licence.

Ten minutes later the 17-year-old victim was found on Belgrade Road, 2.5km away, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Paramedics took him to hospital where his injuries were judged to be non-life threatening.

Two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder but were later released on bail.

DI Matthew Webb, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our investigation is moving along and we now believe that on the day of the incident a motorbike carrying two males rode into Gilpin Square at around 1.30pm.

“The bike stopped by a group of four or five males who had their faces covered and someone from the masked group fired a gun, shooting the victim who was on the motorbike.

“After being shot, the victim fell from the bike but managed to get to his feet.

“He was then chased by the group for a short distance before they all fled into the surrounding streets.

“This was a brutal shooting in broad daylight on a busy residential street in east London and we are confident that a number of people will have seen either the actual incident or the immediate aftermath. We really want to hear from those people.

“If you have dashcam or doorbell footage, or even if you have been told something about the shooting, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Birmingham daylight double stabbing

Armed Police have swooped on Birmingham city centre after a double stabbing.

Paramedics treated two teenage boys for trauma care after they sustained potentially life-threatening injuries, West Midlands Ambulance Service said. It was alerted to the stabbing in Corporation Street at 2.36pm on Thursday.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Crews arrived on scene to find a teenage boy who had sustained serious injuries. A second teenage boy was located nearby with serious injuries.

"The team of ambulance staff worked to administer trauma care to the teenagers on scene to stabilise their conditions. Both teenage boys were conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights to hospital for further emergency care."

Two ambulances, three paramedic officers, HART paramedics, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a doctor and paramedic on board, a critical care paramedic and a West Midlands CARE team doctor have been at the scene.

West Midlands Police confirmed there were two scenes, one at a fast food restaurant in Corporation Street and another in Priory Queensway.

The victims have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency Section 60 stop and search powers have been triggered as a result of the double stabbing.

In a statement on the force's website, West Midlands Police said: "We remain concerned that young people are coming into the city with knives and that tensions could lead to other people getting hurt.

"Our priority is to protect and keep people safe."

Anyone with information should contact West Midlands Police via Live Chat on its website or by calling 101.

Witnesses reported seeing firearm officers at the scene though this has not been confirmed.

Transport for West Midlands tweeted: "There is disruption in the city centre due to a @WMPolice closure around Priory Queensway and Old Square."

Croydon parents fear for their children's safety

Residents say they were "counting down the days for something like this to happen" after a man was fatally stabbed in South London last night. Police were called to Croydon at 6:29pm on Thursday (21 April) following reports a person had been stabbed.

Officers found a man, believed to be aged 40, on a residential road in Leslie Grove Place right next to a local nursery who was pronounced dead at the scene. But when MyLondon spoke to local residents, many said the tragedy was "inevitable" and doesn't seem to have come as a surprise.

Kurt, 35, who lives next to MMI Day Nursery Croydon and has 18-month-old twins, said: "It was a lovely neighbourhood, the type of place you could pop next door if you need anything. But in the last five to six years it's gone downhill.

"Me and my wife Sarah have lived here since 2012 but we're moving out. One of our neighbours was threatened with a knife. There was an incident where the nursery had to get railings put up because people were drinking and doing drugs on their property.

"Something like this has been inevitable for a long time. We've been complaining to the council. The sad thing is this could have been prevented if something had been done earlier."

A single mum who lives on the road with her 10-year-old son shared that before police arrived she heard a man shouting outside her flat. He was screaming “Oh my f*****g days.” She said: “My son saw what was happening and shouted mum there’s something going on. It was really scary."

"Police arrived shortly after and arrested him. To tell you the truth this is a trouble spot. It’s expected round here. We’ve been counting down the days until something like this happens.”

Croydon has has seen a spate of violence, only last week a fight broke out on Goldcrest Way in New Addington and police were called to the scene at 4.35pm on Friday (April 15), with three teenage boys being stabbed - aged 15, 16 and 18.

The Met Police confirmed two people have been arrested following the spree of stabbings, but many are starting to feel unsafe in the area. One elderly woman, who has lived in the area for 30 years said: "Stabbings are becoming too common here."

"The joys of living in and working in Croydon. Luckily us old dears don’t go out much at night but when I go up the road for my fish and chips on a Friday night I don’t feel too safe," she added.

Another woman, who asked to remain anonymous, added: “Me and my son don’t hang around in the street long. When we come home I rush him in to our house because it’s trouble round here.”

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in police custody. Police said that efforts are ongoing to confirm the identity of the man and his next of kin will then be informed and will be supported by specialist officers.

A dark week in Croydon

It has been a dark week for Croydon with six stabbings across the borough including one person dead. On Thursday night (April 21) a man was found dead in Leslie Grove Place, just five minutes from East Croydon Station. Three people have been arrested on suspicion of his murder

This was the latest in a series of stabbings across Croydon. Last Thursday (April 14) a man was stabbed following a fight on London Road and collapsed outside Morley's chicken shop. Then over Easter four people were stabbed in a bloody weekend in New Addington. Here's a roundup of all the stabbings in Croydon in the past week.

Last Thursday (April 14) eyewitnesses reported seeing a fight on London Road at around 5.45pm. A man then came 'stumbling out' with "blood on his side" before "walking across the road to near Morley's Chicken before collapsing".

The victim was rushed to hospital where fortunately his injuries were assessed as not being life-threatening. Police went to the scene where they arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder. Disturbing footage seen by MyLondon showed a man being carried on a stretcher by paramedics.

Triple stabbing in New Addington

Just the following day another fight broke out, this time on Goldcrest Way in New Addington. Police were called to the scene at 4.35pm last Friday (April 15) where they found three teenagers stabbed. The boys, aged 15, 16 and 18, were all rushed to hospital. There was initially grave concern for one of the boys but fortunately it was later confirmed that none of them were in a life threatening condition.

Speaking to MyLondon, an anonymous resident said: "I'm coming home from shopping, I'm driving down the road on King Henry's Drive. I see two young lads and one fell down to the floor and got up. I thought they were having a laugh. I did wonder about it, if he was okay or if it was a joke.

"My neighbour said 'What's going on? I have never seen so many police going down the road.' I said 'I know, I was overtaken by an unmarked police car'. The lad who fell down to the floor came running past me, then his friend said 'Miss, miss, can you give me a lift. I saw my friend has just been stabbed.' He said he was with his girlfriend. I said get in the car.

"I asked where he was from and he said Croydon. He was in tears. He said they stabbed his friend in the neck and tried to finish him off. It was just horrible. There were three boys and a girl. The girlfriend had tears rolling down her eyes. I just rubbed her arm and I did not know what to say, he's with the right people now."

Two people were arrested in connection with the triple stabbing.

Another broad daylight stabbing in New Addington

Less than 24 hours later and just a 15 minute walk away, a 27-year-old man was stabbed when he was attacked on the street. Emergency services were called to Headley Drive in New Addington which is less than half a mile away from the triple stabbing on Goldcrest Way.

The road was cordoned off while the man was rushed to hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Reacting to the four stabbings in New Addington, residents told MyLondon they were scared to go outside. Louise, 35, said: "We don't let the kids out. I've got two young boys, they're at the age where they want to start going out on their own with their friends. With the way things are at the moment, I wouldn't even let them come to the Parade on their own. You never know what's going to happen. Mums shouldn't have to worry about their kids dying. It's not right."

Another mum, Di, told MyLondon: "I'm glad my kids are all grown up. Four stabbings in two days. The sad part is it's almost at the point where that's not surprising. Stabbings are becoming normality in New Addington."

Reports reveal a 30% increase in gun-related deaths from 2019 to 2020

According to a University of Michigan analysis, gun violence overtook vehicle accidents as the main cause of mortality among children and adolescents in the United States by 2020.

The discovery was published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine as part of a longer-term study effort by the university's Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention (IFIP).

According to the researchers, a study of mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found an almost 30 percent rise in gun-related fatalities among Americans under the age of 19 between 2019 and 2020. Suicides, unintentional shootings, and killings account for the majority of these deaths, with homicides exceeding the other two categories.

Since 2016, the number of deaths from automobile accidents and gun killings among newborns, children, and young people has been increasing. The researchers discovered that drug overdoses and poisoning climbed by more than 80% between 2019 and 2020, becoming the third top cause of mortality among this population.

Dr. Jason Goldstick, a researcher with IFIP and associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Michigan stated that he was "surprised" by the increase in only a year, adding that he "can't remember ever seeing that before."

The increase in gunshot fatalities among the nation's youth is part of a greater surge in homicides over the same time period. According to the analysis, gun murders in the United States would increase by 33% in 2020.

According to FBI data released in the fall of 2021, while accounting for 14 percent of the US population, Black Americans accounted for over half of the nation's homicide fatalities

Although 2020 was the first year in which more children and teenagers were murdered by firearms than in automobile accidents, according to CDC data, gun violence has been the leading cause of death among Black teenage boys over the age of 15 for at least a decade. These teenagers were not killed in high-profile mass shootings.

Andre Robinson Jr., 19, was one of the young people slain in 2020 when he was shot in the back while delivering breakfast to his girlfriend's home in Oakland, California, on November 8, 2020. Aaron Pryor, a football player, was shot and died on September 27, less than a month after his 16th birthday, in the same city.

In December 2021, California teenagers told The Guardian that an increase in gunshots had shaken their communities. They reported paranoia, despair, and helplessness at the loss of their peers to gun violence, both as victims and as perpetrators.

Samantha Walton, a 17-year-old from San Francisco says "we have to see that violence every day...Nothing should be so serious to where everybody is just killing each other. We’ve got like little kids, sisters, and brothers out here that don’t even make it to 18.”

Goldstick, the University of Michigan researcher, says the numbers are "horrible, especially because these are such preventable deaths, but until very recently research has been chronically underfunded."

Just last Easter weekend, the US saw three separate mass shootings in Pittsburgh and South Carolina.

Detectives investigating the murder of a grandfather stabbed while riding a mobility scooter have released images of a man seen running from the scene armed with a knife

Ch Supt Sean Wilson said it was an act of "unprovoked violence".

Police now want to identify the man from CCTV as a matter of urgency.

Det Ch Insp Jim Eastwood, who is leading the investigation, said: "He is clearly a dangerous individual and people are advised not to approach him, but to call us immediately on 999 if they know him or have any information regarding his whereabouts."

The Met described the attack on Thomas O'Halloran in west London as an act of unprovoked violence

Speaking at the crime scene at midday Ch Supt Wilson said: "We believe that Mr O'Halloran was stabbed on Western Avenue before managing to travel 75 yards or so on his mobility scooter to Runnymede Gardens where he flagged down a member of the public for help," he said.

"So, please. If you saw anything we do need to hear from you."

Ch Supt Wilson said Mr O'Halloran was a "much-loved" member of the Greenford community and lived locally.

Extra officers will be deployed to patrol the area in the coming days to provide reassurance.

A public meeting will also be held on Thursday evening at Greenford Community Centre organised by Metropolitan Police and chaired by Ch Supt Wilson.

"They are there to protect you and to help you," Ch Supt Wilson added.

"If you have any concerns or information that you want to share please approach those officers. I realised that dreadful impact that incidents like this have on our communities.

"I would like to reassure you all that we are doing all we can to solve the horrendous crimes that we have seen across London over the last few days. I stress that London remains one of the safest cities in the world."

Nearly two-thirds of London homicide victims in 2022 have been stabbed to death.

Four people have been fatally shot - all within the last month.

An army of TV crews, satellite trucks and journalists have set up camp in this ordinary residential road in Greenford.

A forensics tent remains standing ominously within the large police cordon - marking the very spot Thomas O'Halloran died.

Traffic on the eastbound A40, which is parallel to Runnymede Gardens, has been slowing down while drivers and passengers take in the crime scene.

This is a narrow road, meaning this happened in plain view immediately outside people's homes, as well as afternoon traffic.

It's difficult to understand how something like this could have happened in a spot so exposed. Neighbours say this is a quiet, uneventful area, with a large number of elderly residents.

They told me that they fear becoming victims of crime themselves

Frasley Coutinho, who lives opposite where Mr O'Halloran was stabbed, said he saw the pensioner being surrounded by a group of youths.

He said: "I saw a couple of people gathering around him and then he drove past and stopped further up, and then there was a group of young boys around him."

Nick Lambie told BBC London the community is very worried by the fatal stabbing

Another resident Nick Lambie said Mr O'Halloran was known to collect for charity.

He added: "When you hear something like that happening on your doorstep it is very disconcerting as it is a very quiet area.

"Someone in their 80s in a mobility scooter can't put up much of a fight."
