Tottenham Hale stabbing: Teenager fighting for his life after being knifed at north London retail park

A man is fighting for his life after he was stabbed at a retail park in north London.

The 18-year-old was stabbed at Tottenham Hale Retail Park on Sunday.

Police said he remained in a life-threatening condition on Monday.

Cordons remained in place outside JD Sports and Boots on Monday morning, as police questioned two male suspects.

A Met spokeswoman said: “Police were called at approximately 4.15pm on Sunday to reports of a man found suffering stab injuries in Hanover Road.

“Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the man, believed to be 18 years old, was taken to an east London hospital for treatment.

“His injuries have been assessed as life-threatening.

“The incident is believed to have taken place in nearby Tottenham Retail Park.”

Two suspects were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Tottenham Hale Retail Park has 24 stores. The Standard was unable to reach its management office for comment on Monday.

Teenager stabbed to death in north London nail salon after being ambushed 'by gang armed with samurai sword'

A teenager was stabbed to death in a hair salon after being ambushed by thugs armed with knives, a gun and a samurai sword.

The 19-year-old victim and another man, 20, were chased by up to a dozen attackers on bicycles who surrounded them outside a cinema in Wood Green.

One witness described how the pair sought refuge in the Koffe an Kreem salon where the teenager was stabbed repeatedly by three masked men in front of terrified customers, including several children.

The victim was rushed to hospital after the attack at around 8pm on Friday but was pronounced dead in the early hours on Saturday.

His friend was stabbed and blasted with a shotgun in what witnesses described as a “planned” attack. He survived and was said to be stable in hospital today.

Detectives are investigating possible gang links to the murder, the 15th in London so far this year.

A salon worker told the Standard: “There was a brawl outside. One of them ran in and three guys chased him and started stabbing him inside the salon.

“We were screaming and running. The clients were hiding and we tried to get them out the back. There were 10 of us in the shop, including children.

“The men were stabbing him in the corner of the shop. When we came out there was blood all over him. He had a lot of wounds.”

One witness told how the attack began outside the Vue Cinema near Wood Green Tube station.

He said: “I heard three gun shots and one of them hit one of the victims. There were loads of them. The whole thing was definitely planned.”

The victims are thought to have fled 400 yards to reach their car in Vincent Road, parked outside the salon, while the gang gave chase on pedal cycles.

They tried to drive away but reversed into another vehicle and were set upon inside.

The salon worker added: “The gang came on bikes and jumped on the car. They were breaking the glass and started smashing the car.

“We were screaming because we could see them holding knives and a gun. Then they came into the shop and we moved out to the back.”

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin, who is leading the murder hunt, said: “The attackers were armed with at least one firearm, knives and a samurai sword. Some, or possibly all, were riding bikes.”

She appealed to people who witnessed the attack to come forward saying: “I know that people may be reluctant or afraid to speak with police, but making a single call could help to remove dangerous, violent individuals from your area and all information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

A relative of the victim wrote on social media: “You took a child away from his mother, a brother away from his siblings, a dad away from his daughter.

“But you took the worst thing ever you possibly could from me you took my cousin, my brother my best friend.. the left lung to my right and now life will never be the same”.

The killing came nearly a year after rapper Kelvin Odunuyi, 19, known as DipDat, was shot dead outside the cinema last March.

A stretch of Vincent Road remained sealed off this morning, and mourners had placed floral tributes at the edge of the police cordon.

One read: “To my handsome cuz. Gone way too soon. Forever in my heart. Until we meet again.”

The killing is thought to be the latest blood spilt in an ongoing feud between gangs in Wood Green and neighbouring Tottenham.

At least six other teenagers were stabbed in knife violence across London over the weekend in separate attacks in Southwark, Camberwell and Tottenham Hale. None of the injured are life threatening.

A man in his 20s is critically ill in hospital after being shot in Enfield early on Saturday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A cordon remained in place this evening.

Ilford stabbing: Man stabbed to death outside train
station in fourth knife attack in capital within eight hours

A man has been knifed to death outside an east London railway station in the fourth stabbing within just eight hours in the capital

Police and paramedics were scrambled to the scene in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, shortly before 9pm on Tuesday night.

Horrified witnesses looked on as paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man.

The victim, aged in his twenties, died at the scene.

Dramatic footage showed police cars lining the street as a cordon was put in place.

A police investigation has been launched. No arrests have been made.

Officers were working to inform the victim's next of kin.

It comes after man in his thirties suffered a stab wound to his thigh in Enfield shortly before 2pm.

He was rushed to hospital but has since been discharged.

A schoolboy was attacked and stabbed in a separate incident outside South Ruislip station, in west London, just before 4.30pm.

Witnesses described seeing a boy in school uniform "lying face down on the pavement" outside the station after being attacked.

The boy was rushed to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, London Ambulance Service said.

Two hours later, a teenager was stabbed in Romford, east London, in another horrific attack.

The 18-year-old was rushed to hospital. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Birmingham stabbings:
Knife crime is an emergency

A West Midlands Police boss has declared knife crime "an emergency" after three teens were stabbed to death within 12 days in Birmingham

Chief Constable Dave Thompson said stop and searches would be stepped up and more officers would patrol the streets amid the "crisis".

There have been 269 knife crimes recorded in the city so far this year.

Police also urged more help from parents and teachers to tackle the violence among youngsters.

The spate of killings in Birmingham follows knife crime attacks in London, where there have been 12 fatal stabbings in 2019.

Mr Thompson, who was with Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson outside the scene of a teen stabbing at a charity shop in Birmingham, pledged extra patrols with additional officers in certain areas.

He said: "Immediate and intensive action is needed to prevent this current crisis from continuing. My officers have been given extensive powers to search people without the need to suspect they are carrying weapons.

"I recognise this will upset some innocent young people, but I fear the carriage of weapons in the current environment is growing, often through fear, and we can take no chances.

"For our young people, their families and communities we need to stop this emergency quickly. Without specific areas or people to target that means blunt action to prevent violence."

Hazrat Umar, 18, was stabbed to death in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham on Monday.

Mr Umar was a relative of the former chief prosecutor for North West England Nazir Afzal. Mr Afzal said: "I don't want any other family having to experience what our family has."

'Find the killers'

It follows the stab deaths of Abdullah Muhammad, 16, in Small Heath on 20 February and Sidali Mohamed, 16, who was attacked outside Joseph Chamberlain College in Highgate, on 13 February.

On Tuesday, police were also called after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in the leg near a British Heart Foundation shop in Bull Street, Birmingham, at 17.30 GMT.

Officers vowed to leave "no stone unturned" after the teenager was taken to hospital and is in a "stable condition". No arrests have been made.

A man, 29, suffered serious stab injuries to his arm, near to Aston Street, Birmingham, just after 14.30 GMT and was taken to hospital on Wednesday.

And on Saturday, Gary Cunningham, 29, was found with fatal stab injuries at a flat in Harborne.

Mr Jamieson added: "We need the support of local communities to stop this violence. It is not a job the police can do alone and they can't simply arrest their way out of this problem."

Det Chf Superintendent Mark Payne, from the West Midlands Police homicide team, said that while investigators are doing all they can to find the killers, they need help from parents and teachers to turn the tide against knife crime.

"Knife crime and violence is not an issue we can tackle on our own. We need help from partners, parents, schools and the wider community to tackle this growing issue," he said.

In 2018 there were 19 stabbing fatalities - all under the age of 25 - in the West Midlands.

There have been 17 homicides in London so far this year, six of which happened in nine days.

On Tuesday alone five people were stabbed - four of whom were attacked in less than eight hours and one who died.

In the 12 months leading up to March 2018, a quarter of all knife crime victims were men aged 18-24.

Patrick Green, from the Ben Kinsella Trust - a charity which campaigns against knife crime - said "nobody is doing enough" to stop it.

"If lessons are to be learned we really to get behind not just the enforcement element but also to make sure that the next group of young people don't carry the same attitude that a knife will protect them," he said.

Knife crime in the West Midlands

West Midlands Police saw a 72% rise in knife crime between April 2013 and the year ending March 2018, Office for National Statistics (ONS) analysis shows.

Across England and Wales there were 285 killings by a knife or sharp instrument in the 12 months ending March 2018, the highest since records began in 1946.

Out of 43 forces, West Midlands Police saw the third highest knife crime offences per head of population between April 2017 to March 2018, according to the Home Office.

Taxi passenger wounded in
West Norwood drive-by shooting

A taxi passenger was wounded in a drive-by shooting in West Norwood Thursday 28 February.

At around 8pm a taxi driver visited a South London police station, reporting that a male passenger he was carrying had been shot.

It is understood that the driver picked up his fare, driving to Lakeview Road where he stopped for a period.

A car pulled up beside the taxi and shots were fired into the back of the vehicle. The car then fled the scene.

The victim asked the driver to take him to another location, where he left the taxi on foot.

He was later traced by police. His injuries were not deemed life-threatening or life-changing.

No arrests have been made, as detectives from the Met's Trident and Area Crime Command continue to investigate.

News of the shooting appeared on social media at around 7pm, as locals reported hearing multiple shots.

A 16-year-old boy was left in a critical condition after being shot in West Norwood just last month.

Harold Hill stabbing:
Girl 17, dies in park attack

A 17-year-old girl has been stabbed to death at a park in east London

Police were called to St Neots Road in Harold Hill, Romford, at about 21:30 GMT on Friday.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police has begun a murder investigation, although no arrests have been made. The girl's next-of-kin have been informed, and a post-mortem examination is due to be held.

It comes less than a week after 20-year-old Ché Morrison was stabbed to death outside Ilford train station in east London.

Police have sealed off the park and forensic officers are at the scene.

One resident, whose flat overlooks the park, said she rushed out after her family heard a commotion and tried to help the girl as she lay bleeding.

A small group of people cried and hugged each other after laying a bunch of flowers at the cordon with the message "we love you forever in our hearts."

Another message attached to a floral tribute said: "You are so strong. We will always remember you."

Hairdresser Ellie Best, 17, said she and her family had moved to Harold Hill from east London for the "good strong community".

She said: "No-one should have to get a call to say that their child has been killed.

"It is becoming more and more like central London here. Children did not fight or anything and you did not hear of people being mugged. There has never been knife crime here before - it is just in the last six or seven months.

"I worry for the younger youths. Police need to talk to them about the dangers of carrying knives because the message is not getting through."

Miss Best said the park was used by local children to "just hang out".

One woman told the BBC the stabbing highlighted "one of the issues we have in Havering - community are not reporting what they're seeing, therefore Havering is not seen as an area of concern".
Image caption Under-reporting was an issue in Havering, one woman said

Friday's stab victim is the first teenage girl to die in a homicide in the capital this year.

She became the 18th person to be killed in London this year, and the fifth teenager to die.

Last year, two 17-year-old girls and one 18-year-old woman were murdered in London.

Acting Det Ch Supt John Ross, of the Met, described the latest death as a "tragedy" and said police would carry out extra patrols around Harold Hill "in the coming days".

He also said there had been a reduction in knife crime since the middle of last year, particularly in relation to people aged under 25.

"But we are not complacent, bearing down on violent crime in the streets of London is a top priority for the Met," he said.

Urging potential witnesses to come forward, he added: "Your information could take a knife off the street or save a life."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was "devastated" by the stabbing.

Mr Khan, who has a 17-year-old daughter himself, urged members of the community to contact police.

Councillor Paul McGeary, who represents the Gooshays ward where the killing happened, arrived with fellow councillor Tele Lawal to lay flowers at the scene.

A small group of people cried and hugged each other after laying a bunch of flowers at the cordon with the message, "we love you forever in our hearts".

The park is known locally as Amy's Park, with a playground in the centre, which has been the focus of forensics investigations.

Both councillors said they and their families had used the park, which is in a residential area.

Mr McGeary spoke of his "shock and horror" that it had happened in the semi-rural outer London borough.

'Tackle violence'

He said: "This is not something that happens here and I am just completely surprised."

He could not say if it was gang-related, but described it as "tragic".

He added: "It is very shocking for the whole community. I think people will be talking to each other and hopefully providing support to the relatives of the unfortunate person who died."

Ms Lawal, 22, said: "It is not an area where you will frequently see violence like this.

"It is going to shock our community but it just shows the strain that is happening with young people, with our police and the resources we need in our community to tackle violence like this."

A resident who lives opposite the park, who did not know the victim, described her death as "a terrible thing".

He said: "She was just 17 and just starting her life. How could anyone do that to a woman? It is disgusting. It is happening a lot in London lately. It is becoming a normal thing and that is terrifying."

MP for Hornchurch and Upminster in Havering Julia Lopez described the attack as "utterly senseless".

Girl, 17, stabbed to death in park
with knife in back was A level student

A teenage girl knifed to death in a "random attack" in a children's play area has been described by heartbroken friends as the most happy person who never stopped smiling.

Friends say the victim - named locally as Jodie - "never had arguments or got into trouble" and was simply sitting in the park when she was fatally stabbed in the back.

It is understood the knife handle snapped and the blade was embedded in her body as the killers fled.

Describing her as "the nicest person", her pals said she was studying psychology and sociology for her A levels.

An 18-year-old lad, who didn't want to be named, said: “She was just such a nice person, she never even had arguments with anybody.

“She was just always there for anyone who needed her.”

Were you in the park last night? Email webnews@mirror.co.uk

A 17-year-old girl, weeping at the edge of Amy's Play Site, in Havering, said: “She was just the most happy person, she never stopped smiling.

“She was studying psychology and sociology, but I think she still didn’t know what she wanted to be when she was older.”

Another friend, a 17-year-old girl, added: “She never would have been in any trouble."

A mum, whose son was among the mourners, said: “We have been told by police not to name her but she was a lower sixth student taking her A-levels.

“My son was friends with her.

“She died in the ambulance - she was going to be taken to Queen’s [hospital].

“There were four in the park - two of them chased the scumbags and two of them were trying to get help."

She added: “I believe it was a random attack.

"They were just sitting there - they were having a Friday night giggle, as we have all done.

“What do you do at 17? You just want to go out and be with your mates and not have your mum tell you to stop making so much noise.

“It is an inner city crime that is moving to outer London areas; it was never like this before.”

A laminated note left with purple flower tributes was dedicated to “Jodie” and read: “Jodie, we love you.

“You are so amazing. We will always remember you. HSFC.”

Another note with a drawing of a “piece of toast” read: “Jodie, I’m not the boy I used to be - I’m here, I’m queer get used to me WE’RE GAY.

Devastated mourners have been seen laying flowers on the edges of the park, which remains cordoned off with red and blue tape while forensic officers examine the area.

Facing the park is a row of houses, where mum-of-three Teresa Farenden, 49, lives with her son, who heard screaming last night.

She ran from her house to try and save the young girl, who she understood was stabbed by two men.

As the girl lay dying people gathered to try and help her, including her boyfriend and paramedics who battled for her life for more than an hour.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.26pm last night - just over an hour after police were called.

Teresa ran over in her flip flops after her son heard cries for help.

"The knife blade was still in her, but I didn’t see it because it was dark," she said.

"I didn’t realise at the time, but then all I kept thinking once the police told me was 'have I put the knife in further by giving her compressions?'

She added: "It was horrific, it was just the blood. There must’ve been two pints of blood. There was so much of it.

"The girl was moaning, but she was mostly silent. We checked her pulse and we could hear her breathing."

She continued: "I was in the kitchen and I thought I’d better check it out just in case."

"I never thought in a million years that I was coming out to a murder and that I would be walking out to a young lady who had been stabbed.

"I was trying to do my coat up in the drive and I shouted out ‘is everything okay?’ as I was worried it could be kids drinking.

It is thought the blade became embedded in her body, as the handle snapped.

"Then a boy said ‘no I need help, my girlfriend has been stabbed’ and I just flew over there in my flip flops."

Teresa found the victim laying on her back in the corner of the park with her boyfriend beside her.

She said she put the girl in the recovery position and administered CPR.

Teresa said: “People are scared to help, but all I was thinking with my mother’s instinct was 'I need to help'.

"Her boyfriend did everything he could.

"When I came over she was on her back so I moved her onto her side.

"Then the boyfriend’s friend came over with some kitchen roll.

"Then there was another girl and a man came over in a van to help and took his coat off to keep it on the wound and keep it compressed as much as they could.

"I think he was the dad of one of the boyfriend’s friends.

"I was just trying to keep her legs in the recovery position because she was heavy, like a dead weight.

"Just as the ambulance crew turned up, she had gone. It was devastating."

Medics battled to save her but she died at the scene.

Teresa said she was told by police that the blade, which she did not see, was still inside her and was removed at the scene.

"That is when I realised the blade was still inside her and they removed the blade," she said.

"My heart is with the family how something so devastating like that could happen to a young girl."

The brave resident said it is the first time in the 16 years she has lived by the park that "anything like this has happened" and said she "hopes it is also the last."

The red brick terraced house faces onto the park where three forensics officers were photographing the area where the teen was knifed to death.

This morning the park remains cordoned off with red and blue tape, while a tent could be seen in the park.

Forensics were combing the scene and nearby bushes for evidence.

Acting Detective Chief Superintendent John Ross, of the East Area Command Unit, said: "Yesterday a 17-year-old girl lost her life, and I want to express my deepest sympathies to this girl’s family and friends.

"Her death is a tragedy. I can reassure them and the whole community that we are doing everything possible to identify and bring to justice the person or persons responsible.

"It is days like these that really do highlight how we must continue to work tirelessly with our partners and the public to tackle knife crime.

"I am urging any witnesses, anyone who saw anything suspicious or anyone with information about the incident to contact police and share what they know.

"There will be additional police patrols in and around the Harold Hill area in the coming days, and anyone with any information should please speak with those officers."

He continued: "Since the middle of last year, we have seen some reductions in knife crime - particularly in relation to people under the age of 25. However we are NOT complacent.

"Bearing down on violent crime on the streets of London is a top priority for the Met, and I am clear that the people of Havering and communities across London have an absolutely vital role to play.

"We need to hear from anyone who has information that could detect or prevent crime. Your information could take a knife off our streets or save a life."

No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

London stabbing horror strikes again as man
is knifed hours after Jodie Chesney murdered

A MAN has been left in a serious condition after being stabbed in Soho this morning, as London’s out-of-control bloodbath continues

The victim, aged in his 30s, was attacked on Romilly Street at about 6am. One woman, aged in her 40s, has been arrested after officers swooped onto the scene. A crime scene is in place as police continue to investigate.

City of Westminster Police said on Twitter: “A crime scene is in place in Romilly St, Soho whilst we investigate a stabbing at 6:00am. A quick police response resulted in an arrest.”

It comes after 17-year-old Jodie Chesney was stabbed to death in a Romford park on Friday.

Police were called to the scene, near St Neot's Road in Harold Hill, at about 9.25pm but the teenager died just over an hour later.

So far, no arrests have been made and her family are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Jodie's grandmother Debbie Chesney said in a Facebook post: "This was our youngest granddaughter.

"How have we come to this point where kids can't have a walk in a park without suffering an unprovoked attack?

"If anyone knows anything about this please contact the police with information.

"We don't want anyone else to go through what our family is suffering right now.

"This has to stop, there are too many young people having their lives cut short by needless violence."

On Saturday, a 50-year-old was found dead with knife injuries at a property in Hendon, north-west London, bringing the number of homicides in London this year so far to 19.

A 54-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

Jodie Chesney stabbing:
Hunt for pair over Harold Hill attack

Police are searching for two suspects they believe were involved in the stabbing of 17-year-old Jodie Chesney in east London

Jodie died at the scene of the attack in St Neot's Road, Harold Hill, at about 21:30 GMT on Friday.

The Metropolitan Police said Jodie had been playing music with five other teenagers in a park when two males walked up to the group and one stabbed her once in the back.

They ran off towards Retford Road.

Officers said the pair had been seen in the park about half an hour earlier but had not spoken to Jodie or her group of friends.

The force said Jodie's attacker was a black male (no surprise there) in his late teens but gave no further details, and said there were no descriptions of the second suspect.

Det Ch Insp Dave Whellams urged any witnesses who had not spoken to police yet to contact him.

"There has been excellent support from the local community and a number of people have shared information with police, but there will be other witnesses and people with information that may prove crucial.

"Although the description of the suspect is limited, I am certain that people will have seen the two males hanging around the park or running away from the scene - or will otherwise have noticed something suspicious. I need those people to call me."

Jodie was earlier described as a "bundle of joy and such a good person" by one classmate, with another telling BBC News: "She was so beautiful - inside and out.

"She was kind, wouldn't hurt anyone and would do anything to make anyone happy."

Acting Det Ch Supt John Ross said: "Yesterday a 17-year-old girl lost her life, and I want to express my deepest sympathies to [Jodie's] family and friends.

"Her death is a tragedy. I can reassure them and the whole community that we are doing everything possible to identify and bring to justice the person or persons responsible.

"It is days like these that really do highlight how we must continue to work tirelessly with our partners and the public to tackle knife crime."

Jodie's family have issued an appeal on social media for witnesses to the attack.

Her grandmother, Debbie Chesney, wrote on Facebook: "How have we come to this point where kids can't have a walk in a park without suffering an unprovoked attack?

"If anyone knows anything about this please contact the police with information.

"We don't want anyone else to go through what our family is suffering right now. This has to stop, there are too many young people having their lives cut short by needless violence."

Police sealed off the area, known locally as Amy's Park, and conducted forensic searches, but no arrests have yet been made.

Sadly, we have become used to black gangs fighting each other. Often, these gangs are proud if they injure others and prouder still to show off scares that they have received in gang fights.

Stabbing a girl in the back is shocking and unheard of
Our hearts goes out to her family and friends

'Tsar' needed to stop stabbings

A knife crime tsar must be appointed by government in order to "get a grip" on the rise in youth violence, a former Metropolitan Police commissioner says.

Lord Hogan-Howe said a 93% rise in the number of under-16s stabbed over five years was a "terrifying statistic" and "something has to change".

It comes after two 17-year-olds were killed in separate incidents in London and Greater Manchester at the weekend.

The home secretary will meet police chiefs this week to discuss the issue.

Sajid Javid condemned the "senseless violence", saying: "Young people are being murdered across the country, it can't go on."

NHS data shows that the number of children aged 16 and under treated for stab wounds in England rose from 180 in 2012-13 to 347 in 2017-18.

Lord Hogan-Howe - who led the Met from 2011 to 2017 - said a tsar should be put in charge of how money is spent to tackle knife crime, rather than individual police forces - especially when it comes to officer recruitment.

"I'd want to know, week after week, when are you recruiting them? When do they arrive? When do they get trained? And when do they hit the streets?" he told the BBC.

"You want to know day-by-day what's going to get delivered. And I don't get that sense of grip.

"If it's not treated as a crisis, it will take another two years before we see action."

Tsars are unelected independent advisers to the government who help to shape policy on a range of issues from drug misuse to how to reinvigorate the high street.

On Saturday evening, Yousef Ghaleb Makki, from Burnage, was stabbed to death in the village of Hale Barns, near Altrincham.

Two boys, also aged 17, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

Yousef's death came a day after Jodie Chesney was killed in a knife attack in an east London park as she played music with friends.

Officers say Jodie's attacker was a black male in his late teens but gave no further details. There are no descriptions of a second suspect.

Jodie's family branded it a "totally random and unprovoked attack".

Labour councillor for Heaton Tele Lawal, who attended Jodie's sixth form college, said: "She was a scout, loved by the community. To have a person like her taken away - is that not a wake-up call for our government?

"It shocks us all. For me as a councillor, what more can we be doing? I always say to our community, 'you need to keep on reporting so the intelligence can be built and resources implemented.'"

Next steps

Lord Hogan-Howe said the government and police also needed to:

Tackle the supply of cocaine to the UK from Colombia and Mexico. As the supply has increased and the price has dropped, violence between dealers has intensified, he said

Deter young people from carrying knives. Too many are worried about being caught without a knife, not with one, he said, and the police need better technology than knife-detecting wands and arches to detect them

Combat deprivation, which he said was a common factor in knife crime across the country
The killings at the weekend follow the deaths of three other teenagers in knife attacks in Birmingham in two weeks, prompting West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson to brand the situation a "national emergency".

Hazrat Umar, 17, was killed in Bordesley Green on Monday; Abdullah Muhammad, 16, died in Small Heath the previous week, and seven days earlier Sidali Mohamed, 16, was stabbed outside a college in Highgate.

Before you try to solve any problem, you need to know what's causing it. The Home Office says the spike in knife crime, and serious violence more generally, is largely being driven by disputes over drugs.

So, with the National Crime Agency, it's set up a co-ordination centre to focus efforts on disrupting supply and catching dealers.

But it's also clear many stabbings are not linked to drugs - they're part of a tit-for-tat cycle of street violence between gangs which breeds fear among young people and prompts them to carry weapons.

There's a consensus that fixing that requires a two-pronged approach. More visible and intrusive policing, such as stop-and-search, to suppress the problem, together with longer-term prevention work (known as the public health model) to identify and support those at risk of being drawn into violent gangs at an early stage.

Where there's disagreement is whether cuts to policing and other public services have played a role in the surge in violence. For ministers to acknowledge resources are a factor would mean admitting their policies contributed to the problem and providing funding to rectify it.

Meanwhile, figures from an investigation by Channel 4's Dispatches programme suggest the number of children and young people in England and Wales linked to murders and manslaughters using knives has risen by more than 75% over three years.

The number of police-recorded offenders aged under 18 rose from 26 to 46 between 2016 and 2018, the programme found.

In Scotland, there has been a long-term decline in the overall number of homicides (including murders) from 137 in 2004/5 to 59 last year. A sharp instrument was the main method of killing in 34 of 2018's cases.

The Home Office said it set out a range of actions to tackle violent crime in October, including a £200m youth endowment fund and a consultation on a new legal duty to treat serious violence as a public health issue.

An extra £970m in police funding is also proposed for 2019-20 and the Offensive Weapons Bill, currently before Parliament, will introduce new offences to tackle knife crime and acid attacks.

But London's Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Sophie Linden said new money was not enough to make up for the millions of pounds of cuts to services that ensured young people did well at school and were not excluded.

"This is a complex problem. It's policing, it's youth services, it's working with parents. We need the government to step up," she said.

Home Office minister Victoria Atkins told BBC Radio 4's Today programme a week of national action in February took 9,000 knives from the streets and saw more than 1,000 arrests.

I repeat an earlier post:

I HATE DRUGS
I HATE DRUG DEALERS
I HATE WHAT DRUGS DO TO PEOPLE

My solution would be to put everyone found with illegal drugs or weapons into the army and let them experience the strict military regime

If a civilian goes to prison they lead a life of luxury compared to the army prison services - put them in the army and if the do anything put them in the army prison :D

And add:

Everyone involved in the buying and selling of drugs must be evicted from social housing

I do not care if they rot in the gutter because they are killing people with the drugs and violence

At this moment in time THOUSANDS possibly more than MILLION innocent adults live in fear of drug gangs in their area

Young people often carry knives because they also live in fear

Getting rid of the drug dealers from social housing is the first step

Five arrested as knife gang enters
Lancashire college threatening students

Five people have been arrested after a gang of males carrying knives entered a college and threatened students in a “targeted attack”

The disorder happened at Runshaw College in Leyland, Lancashire. A 17-year-old student received a minor injury for which he needed hospital treatment.

Lancashire Police said: “We were initially called at 10:40am by a member of staff from Runshaw College after they had received an anonymous report stating that a group of people were going to attend the college with weapons by train from Manchester.

“Officers were deployed and whilst at the college at shortly before 4pm, they have witnessed a group of males walking into the grounds whilst students were leaving. Some of the group were seen carrying knives and were making threats towards students.

“A 17-year-old boy was nicked on the arm during the incident and has been taken to Chorley Hospital. His injury is not thought to be serious.”

The force added: “When patrols arrived, the group made off from the college. Three people who were inside a parked Nissan Micra close by were arrested. A fourth person who made off on foot was also arrested.

“A Peugeot 306 has since been stopped on the M55 and a fifth person has now been arrested in connection with the incident.”

Ch Insp Gary Crowe, who is appealing for anyone who may have phone footage to contact officers, said: “We believe this was a targeted attack in that we think the group have gone to find someone, and a separate student has received a minor injury. This was not a random attack.

“I would like to reassure people that the incident has now come to a close. The safety of the college’s students and staff remains our priority and so we have stepped up patrols in the area and this will continue. We have and will remain in close contact with the college.”

British Transport Police officers were given stop and search powers at Leyland station until 10pm on Monday.

The college said it will be “open as usual” on Tuesday.
