Man stabbed to death in Kennington

A murder investigation has been launched after a young man was stabbed to death during a "terrible attack" in south London

Police were called to the Black Prince Estate in Kennington, Lambeth, just after 10pm on Saturday to reports of a man suffering stab wounds.

The 30-year-old victim was treated by officers and paramedics, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s next of kin have been informed, but he has not yet been formally identified.

A short time later, a 26-year-old man went to a hospital suffering stab injuries, believed to have been sustained in the same incident. Police said the injuries are not life-threatening.

DCI Dave Whellams from the Metropolitan Police appealed for witnesses to come forward as he condemned the "callous" knife attack.

He said: “A man has lost his life and a family has been left suffering unimaginable grief because of the callous use of a knife to inflict fatal injuries. Officers who were called to the incident and then paramedics worked to save him, but tragically he died at the scene.

“I will do all I can to get justice for this family, and, along with colleagues from my homicide teams, I will use every available tactic to find whoever is responsible for this terrible attack."

He added: “Our investigation is at an early stage, but we are already building a picture of what happened. I would urge any witnesses who have yet to speak to police to call my officers or contact Crimestoppers anonymously to share what they know.

“Officers from the Met’s Central South Command are supporting the investigation, and there will be additional patrols in and around the estate and the Kennington area. I ask local people to speak with those officers to tell them anything they know about this incident or more broadly about criminals who are active in the area.”

There has been no arrests.

The 42-year-old was attacked on Streatham High Road, near the junction with Ambleside Avenue, in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said a suspect ran from the scene following the attack, which took place around 2am.

The victim was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

Investigating officer, DS Rob Merrett, said: “I want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicion, or who witnessed the assault.

"A lone suspect, believed to be a white man, ran from the scene north along the High Road, and I want to hear from anyone who may have seen that man.”

There have been no arrests.

Police officer stabbed tackling
knifeman in north London

A Metropolitan Police constable has been stabbed after trying to tackle a knife-wielding suspect in north London

Officers were called to Hendon Way at about 1.15pm to reports of a man seen in possession of a knife.

When they arrived the suspect tried to flee before stabbing a male officer in the arm.

The man was tasered and arrested on suspicion of GBH. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The male officer was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is not life threatening.

North West BCU Commander Roy Smith said: “This is another example of the dangers our officers face on a daily basis as they go about their duty protecting the people of London.

“Knowing that there were reports of a man in possession of a knife, this police constable and his colleagues ran to challenge and apprehend him – these are truly brave actions.

“I have visited the injured officer in hospital and thankfully he should make a full recovery from his injury.”

Wolverhampton murder victim

A man stabbed to death in Wolverhampton has been named as father-of-one Paulius Petrasiunas

Image

Mr Petrasiunas, 24, was stabbed to death with a machete outside a block of flats in Chervil Rise, Heath Town, just before 5.20pm on Monday.

So far no arrests have been made but police are hunting 20-year-old Sean Bulle over the attack.

Detectives say they have followed a number of lines of inquiry to track Bulle down, but have so far been unable to find him.

Mr Petrasiunas, originally from Lithuania, lived in Heath Town and had a one-year-old son called Kingsley-Clifford.

An air ambulance landed on a nearby car park and medics attempted to revive Mr Petrasiunas but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post mortem is due to be carried out on Wednesday.

His devastated family paid tribute today, saying : "Rest in peace, I love you so much and always will.

"Your little sister will miss you too.

"We will love you forever my beautiful angel.”

Police at the scene

Image

Detective Inspector Jim Mahon, who is leading the murder probe, warned the public against approaching Bulle and said that anyone considering helping him risked being prosecuted.

He said: “We have been working hard to establish what happened on Monday afternoon and are following up a number of lines of enquiry.

“We believe Bulle may have been involved and I am asking for your help in tracing him.
Emergency services at the scene. Photo: Paul Bill

“If anyone knows where he is or thinks they may have seen him, I would urge them to our incident room on 101, extension 861 3026 immediately.

“Anyone who may be shielding him through a sense of misguided loyalty, should be aware that they are committing an offence and could be prosecuted.

“It’s vitally important that we speak to Bulle. My message to him, is to do the right thing and let us know where you are."

Anyone who sees Bulle is asked not to approach him but contact police immediately.

It read: “Alpha Talent Management (ATM) are raising money for funeral costs and to support his family during this time.

“We are reaching out to the UK MMA fraternity to come together and show some love for Jay, who has been such an integral part of this industry.

“If he has ever fought on your show, supported you, been in your corner, trained you, inspired you or simply blessed you with his infectious energy please show some love and support and donate today no matter how big or small.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP Jay, we love you, will always miss you and will keep your memory alive forever.”

Scotland Yard has launched a murder investigation into his death.

Young man shot in Camden park

A 23-year-old man arrived at a north London hospital just after midnight last Thursday

He had gunshot wounds to his chest, which were not life-threatening or changing, Scotland Yard said.

The victim was shot by an unknown assailant a short while earlier while he was with a group of friends in Castlehaven Park.

He then ran into the road and flagged down a passing motorist, who took him to hospital.

A crime scene is still in place and no arrests have been made.

Detectives are also trying to trace the driver as a potential witness.

Man shot dead at ‘nine-nights’ wake

A young man was killed when shots were fired at a funeral wake early today, in the capital’s seventh killing in 12 days

Police including firearms officers found the victim, in his twenties, with a gunshot injury in Windrush Road, Harlesden, at about 3am. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbours said more than 100 people had been at a Caribbean “nine-nights” celebration in honour of another man who died last week. They were seen fleeing as a series of gunshots were fired.

Police are informing the victim’s family. There have been no arrests.

A witness said: “There was a massive nine-nights for a young man who died recently. There was very loud music and hundreds of people at the wake which went into the early hours. Then I heard gunshots, there were a lot, up to nine. There was a pause before the last shot. It was no way anything other than gunshots.”

A man who left the wake before the shooting said: “I don’t know why it all kicked off. I am in total shock — I’m worried it could have been one of my friends who has been killed.”

It is the 67th homicide investigation opened by the Met this year, compared with 84 at this point in 2019.

A resident said: “We have had enough of this, the level of violence around here since the lockdown eased has been unacceptable. Just what is going on? We are terrified.”

This morning, a police tent was put up where the man was killed, outside a flat where the party was held.

A teenager who was stabbed to death early yesterday in a Maida Hill car park near Harrow Road has been named locally as Ahmed Yasin Ali, 18. He was ambushed and beaten by a gang who inflicted the fatal knife wound before fleeing in a vehicle.

A GoFundMe page has raised £7,500 for the funeral. Organiser Hajaar El-harrak wrote: “Ahmed was known for his radiant smile and positivity.”

Dulwich tackled by members of public

An alleged gunman was tackled by members of the public in a quiet south London street

Police were called to Crystal Palace Road, East Dulwich at 9.50am on Monday, July 13, over reports of a shotgun being seen and a fight breaking out.

When they arrived they found a 31-year-old man being restrained by members of the public. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and the man was arrested.

The male victim, 40, had been threatened with the gun and was treated for minor injuries.

The alleged gunman had minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been charged with attempted murder and firearm offences.

He has been remanded in custody awaiting trial.

Detective Constable Imran Hansraj, of the Specialist Crime Command (Trident), said: “Although a man has been charged, I still want to hear from anyone who has any information.

“The incident took place outside a residential address in a quiet street with no apparent motivation – anyone who has information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, should call police without delay.

“We are working tirelessly to take weapons off the street and identify and pursue violent offenders to bring them to justice, but we can’t do this alone, I am appealing to everyone in the local community to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or community concerns to police.”

Talented athlete knifed in chest

A talented athlete was stabbed to death after looking at his killer across Tube tracks in west London, the Old Bailey has heard

Tashan Daniel, 20, was knifed in the chest at Hillingdon station on his way to watch Arsenal play at the Emirates Stadium with a friend.

His father witnessed paramedics’ desperate attempts to save him, having kissed his son goodbye only hours before on September 24, 2019.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC told jurors it was a “senseless killing” which appeared to have been started by a look across the train tracks.

Alex Lanning, 22, from Hillingdon, denies murder, and Jonathan Camille, 19, of Fulham, west London, denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.
[hillingdon.jpg]

Undated family handout photo of Tashan Daniel (PA)

Jurors heard Mr Daniel was a talented athlete who trained up to four times a week at Hillingdon Athletic Club.

He worked as a photographer and was described as a popular young man who made friends easily and was devoted to his family.

On the morning of the killing, Mr Daniel had undergone physiotherapy, taken his grandfather to a day centre and had lunch with his mother, the court heard.

At about 3.30pm, he kissed his father goodbye and walked to Hillingdon station with his old school friend Treyone Campbell, who was going to the football with him.

“Within an hour of that kiss, his father was at the station watching medical professionals trying their best to keep his son alive,” Mr Rees said.

He told jurors: “The prosecution say this was a completely senseless killing.

“The two men did not know each other. They were on opposite platforms, each intending to catch a Tube travelling in a different direction.

“It seems that the catalyst for the violence that led to the stabbing was that Alex Lanning thought Tashan Daniel was looking at him across the rail tracks.”

He and Camille changed platforms to confront Mr Daniel and his friend, the court heard.

Mr Rees said: “When the violence erupted, Camille quickly became involved in a fight with Treyone Campbell, and he was still fighting him when Alex Lanning carried out the fatal stabbing.”

The court heard it was not disputed that Lanning stabbed Mr Daniel or that he used a knife he had been carrying.

Man stabbed to death in north London

Three men have been arrested after a man was stabbed to death in north London

Police were called at 4.45am on Friday to reports of four men fighting in Lytton Avenue in Enfield and a man being put into a vehicle.

Fifteen minutes later, officers at North Middlesex Hospital became aware of a man, aged in his 30s, who had been brought in suffering a single stab wound.

Despite the efforts of doctors, the victim was pronounced dead, Metropolitan Police said.

Police are working to inform his next of kin and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

The three men were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody, police said.

It comes hours after a murder investigation was launched in Kilburn on Thursday night.

Police found the victim, aged in his 30s, collapsed next to the side entrance of a McDonald’s. He was taken to a central London hospital and pronounced dead half an hour later.

London crime up five times
more than national average

Crime in London rose five times more than in the rest of the country last year, stark new Government figures revealed today

The number of homicides in the capital went up by 23 per cent in the year to April, according to Office for National Statistics data.

Killings involving the use of a blade in London also increased from 67 in 2018 to 86 last year - up 28 per cent - as the number of knife crimes across England and Wales rose to a new record high.

The over-arching figure for the total number of offences recorded by Metropolitan Police in the last financial year rose by five per cent in 2018, with robberies and thefts both up by 15 per cent, and drug offences 23 per cent higher.

Nationally, police recorded 5.8 million crimes in England and Wales with the total number of annual homicides increasing by 10 per cent, to 683 from 623.

There were hopeful signs, as the Met recorded a 5 per cent fall in home burglaries, and a 16 per cent drop in possession of weapons suggesting operations to take knives off the streets were having an impact.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Graham McNulty, said: “Tackling violence is the number one priority for the Met and we are pleased to see the fall in offences of violence with injury. We are determined to maintain our focus in protecting Londoners and ensuring that our streets are safe.

“Nevertheless, there remains a number of challenges including robbery and theft from a person, where there is still more work to be done. These figures reflect a period before the country entered lockdown and there will be no let-up in our violence suppression work as communities emerge from these restrictions.

“Every member of the Met is committed to protecting Londoners and we will continue to pursue those offenders causing the most serious harm.”

Across England and Wales, knife crime in has risen six per cent to the highest on record, official figures show.

Police-recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument rose to 46,265 for the year to March, the ONS said. This was 51 per cent higher than when data of this kind was first collected in 2011, and is the highest number on record, the report said. The number of offences varied across different regions as the data showed a 7 per cent increase in London but a 10 per cent drop in the number of offences in West Yorkshire.

The report said: “Knife or sharp instrument offences continue to be concentrated in metropolitan areas across England and Wales, with around a third (34 per cent) of all offences recorded by the police in London."

The number of killings in England and Wales involving a knife or sharp instrument also saw an increase of 2 per cent.

According to the ONS figures the rise in homicides was mainly driven by a 28 per cent rise in offences in London (67 to 86) while the rest of the country saw a 7 per cent decrease in the number of homicides involving a knife or sharp instrument.

Overall homicides rose by 10 per cent, but the report noted that the increase includes a single incident in which 39 migrants were found dead in a lorry in Kent. If the major homicide in Kent is excluded from the data, homicides increased by 3 per cent overall.

According to the latest statistics, assault with injury and assault with intent to cause serious harm offences, and robbery, each accounted for 44 per cent of all offences involving a knife or sharp instrument (20,333 and 20,159 respectively).

The ONS report added: “Offences involving knives or sharp instruments have been experiencing a rising trend since the year ending March 2014, although in recent years the rate of increase has slowed.”

Sophie Sanders from ONS Centre for Crime and Justice said: “Overall crime rates were lower in the months leading up to the coronavirus pandemic, than they were in early 2019.

"However, it will not be possible to say whether this would have come to represent a change from the trend in recent years, as the pandemic will have had an impact on the level and types of crime since March.

“In contrast, prior to lockdown, we saw police recorded crime increase. This has been driven, largely, by a rise in high-volume offences including violence without injury, stalking and harassment, and fraud and computer misuse, which, apart from the latter, have been influenced by improvements in recording practices.

“There are also different patterns for specific crimes. For instance, theft from the person increased but burglary decreased.”

The figures do not include Greater Manchester Police, who are unable to provide data due to ongoing problems with a new computer system.

Last year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he would lead a new Cabinet committee looking at ways to tackle crime.

He also told ministers that every department should consider itself a criminal justice department as part of a drive to look at the "complex causes of crime" which would involve long-term reforms to improve health, social care, youth services and education.

Another man stabbed to death

A man was stabbed to death near a busy high street is the third killing in 48 hours within a three-mile radius in north west London

Witnesses heard “shouting and cries of pain” as the victim in his mid-thirties was attacked in Victoria Road, off Kilburn High Road at 10.30pm.

Police found the victim collapsed next to the side entrance of a McDonald’s. He was taken to a central London hospital and pronounced dead half an hour later.

Scotland Yard said officers are in the process of informing next of kin and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command have been informed and a crime scene remains in place.

There have been no arrests.

On Wednesday Ahmed Yasin-Ali, 18, was stabbed to death in a car park by Harrow Road in Maida Hill.

Two arrests have been made by detectives investigating the shooting of a 27-year-old outside a wake in Windrush Road, Harlesden, at 3am yesterday.

The three killings are not believed to be connected, police said, but have fuelled concern of an upsurge in street violence as lockdown is eased.

The stabbing in Kilburn last night is the 68th murder investigation opened by the Metropolitan Police so far this year.

It comes as Government figures today revealed the number of homicides went up by almost a quarter (23 per cent) in the 12 months to April on the previous year.

Overall crime rose five per cent in the capital, compared to a one per cent increase across the rest of the country.

The ONS data published today also revealed that the number of killings involving a blade rose from 67 to 86 in the capital in the year to April, a 28 per cent increase on 2018.

Total offences rose by five per cent, with robberies and thefts both up by 15 per cent, and drug offences 23 per cent higher. In hopeful signs, the Met recorded a 5 per cent fall in home burglaries, and a 16 per cent drop in possession of weapons, suggesting operations to take knives off the streets were working.

Schoolboy stabbed on bus

A teenager was fatally stabbed on a bus after "school beef chat" on social media, a court has heard

Image

Baptista Adjei, 15, was attacked as he travelled with a group of friends to Stratford, east London, last October.

A youth wearing a blue latex glove and carrying a "vicious-looking" hunting knife boarded the bus and stabbed Baptista twice in the chest, the Old Bailey heard.

Two 16 year-old boys from east London deny murder.

The court heard Baptista got off the bus and ran away but collapsed on the ground near a McDonald's restaurant.

Another boy was also stabbed in the arm and leg but survived, jurors were told.

He later told police that the stabbing on the afternoon of 10 October 2019 had followed some inter-school banter on Snapchat a couple of weeks earlier.

He said the "school beef chat" had started out in fun before a football match.
Police in Stratford, east London after a male teenager was fatally stabbed outside Stratford

A youth had sent Baptista a message saying: "If you've got no bodies on your blade, leave the group chat," the court heard.

Baptista allegedly replied: "Shut up. You'll be the first."

The youth who had allegedly sent the message to Baptista is one of two defendants on trial for his murder.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC said the teenager who wielded the knife admitted the manslaughter of Baptista and unlawful wounding of the other boy.

But he has denied the more serious alternative charges of murder and wounding with intent.

Mr Aylett said: "In stabbing Baptista twice in the chest in each case to the depth of 12cm (5in) and puncturing separately the lung and heart you may think [the defendant] must have intended at least to cause Baptista really serious harm.

"The knife used was found to have a blade that was 10in or 25cm long."
'In it together'

The second defendant accepted he was on the bus, having tapped in with his Oyster card and been caught on CCTV, the court heard.

Mr Aylett said the case against him was that he "tipped off" the other defendant knowing what he was going to do.

He added: "In other words they were in this together."
