Violence in Deir ez-Zor Must Cease

In the wake of escalating clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and tribal fighters, the US-led Coalition issued a resounding call for the immediate cessation of violence in northeast Syria

The Global Coalition’s statement, released on Thursday, came in response to the tragic loss of 40 lives during these recent clashes between the SDF and other armed groups in northeast Stria.

“Combined Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve continues to closely monitor events in northeast Syria,” reads the statement. “We remain focused on working with the Syrian Defense Forces (SDF) to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh (ISIS).”

Furthermore, the Coalition expressed deep concern over the current turmoil, asserting that it “creates instability and increases the risk of Daesh (ISIS) resurgence. The violence in northeast Syria must cease and the effort returned to creating peace and stability in northeast Syria free from the threat of Daesh (ISIS).”

Stressing the imperative nature of the situation, the Coalition reaffirmed its unwavering commitment is to reinstate peace and stability to the region, liberating it from the looming threat of Daesh.

The International Coalition’s core mission persists in advising, assisting, and empowering partner forces to secure the enduring defeat of ISIS.

Recent clashes have been concentrated in select areas of Deir ez-Zor's countryside, primarily involving SDF forces and members of the Military Council. Notably, the latter successfully gained control of the Ahmed al-Khabil (Abu Khawla) palace in the village of al-Rabidah, in north of Deir ez-Zor.

In response to the unfolding crisis, the Deir ez-Zor Military Council has appointed Turki Dhari al-Khalaf, known as Abu Laith Khasham, as the interim commander, succeeding Abu Khawla.

Simultaneously, protests against the SDF have erupted within the Deir ez-Zor countryside. Demonstrators resorted to blocking roads with burning tires to voice their grievances.

Tragically, on Wednesday, a checkpoint operated by the SDF in northern Syria came under attack. This resulted in the loss of two SDF fighters and six tribesmen in Al-Harejah town, located in northern Deir ez-Zor.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, the SDF officially confirmed the removal of Deir ez-Zor Military Council's commander, Ahmed Al-Khubail, known as Abu Khawla. This decision followed his arrest earlier in the week, with charges including involvement in criminal offenses like drug trafficking, mismanagement of the security situation, and exacerbating the activities of ISIS cells.

SDF to confront Arab tribes

The Syrian Democratic Forces impose a curfew in Deir Ezzor's countryside following violent clashes that resulted in losses on their end

Al Mayadeen's correspondent to Syria reported that SDF armed groups announced that they are launching a military operation to confront Arab tribes East of the Euphrates River.

Our correspondent added that SDF armed groups used Artillery and grad MLRS to bomb the town of Al-Busayrah in Deir Ezzor Eastern countryside after Arab Tribal fighters took control of it.

Local sources from northern Deir Ezzor confirm the control of Arab tribal fighters over the entire towns of Al-Baghouz, Al-Basir, and Al-Shahil. The sources confirmed Arab tribal fighters control the road leading to the Al-Omar oil field, which is the largest US base in the area.

Arab tribes took control of the entire river line opposite the Syrian army positions in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, local sources confirmed.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Friday imposed a curfew in the Deir Ezzor countryside after sustaining losses in the governorate's east.

Due to the security situation in eastern Deir Ezzor and armed groups, including ISIS, taking advantage of the situation there, the military council of Deir Ezzor and the Internal Security Forces imposed a curfew, SDF said in a statement.

"The curfew will start at 5 AM Saturday and last for 48 hours," the statement added.

The SDF forces in the area are working to ensure the safety of civilians and their property against the sabotage of the armed groups and to prevent said groups from hiding among civilians.

Sources in eastern Syria earlier on Friday told Al Mayadeen that fighters from Arab tribes have taken full control of the town of Hajin in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, shortly after the withdrawal of the SDF militias from the area.

The sources also confirmed that SDF militias withdrew from several other villages in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. Video clips shared by journalists on social media showed armed tribal fighters in these villages.

Arab Tribes and the "Syrian National Army" attacked Manbij

Villages and towns in the eastern and northern countryside of Deir Ezzor witnessed intense clashes throughout last night between fighters from local Arab tribes and the Deir Ezzor Military Council on one side, and armed SDF militias on the other side. The latter attempted to take control of the entire Deir Ezzor and end the armed presence of the Arab tribes.

The clashes resulted in SDF gaining control over several villages in the northern countryside of Deir Ezzor, following the reinforcement of military forces from Al-Hasakah, Manbij, Raqqa, and Ain al-Arab, supported by heavy weapons, rocket launchers, and tanks, to capture the villages of Abriha, Al-Azabah, Al-Rabieh, and Al-Daman before withdrawing from Al-Daman under the pressure of tribal fire.

In the eastern countryside, Arab tribal fighters managed to take control of several villages, towns, and outposts, seizing a number of armored vehicles, weapons, and ammunition after the withdrawal of SDF fighters and the defection of another group who surrendered to the tribal fighters.

The tribes' members took control of a military police headquarters in Granij, a checkpoint in the town of Al-Tayyana, and the Asayish center in Dhiban. Concurrently, the armed SDF groups completely withdrew from the town of Al-Baghouz after being given a deadline to leave the town by the tribal fighters. They also repelled a wide-scale attack by SDF towards the town of Al-Busayrah.

Turkish-affiliated Syrian National Army announced the opening of crossings for those willing from the tribal communities to fight against SDF in Manbij and Al-Bab, which did happen, as armed forces who claimed to be from the tribal communities fought side to side with the National Army against the SDF's advances in several villages in Manbij and Al-Bab.

Moreover, earlier today, Humat Al-Jazira armed group announced joining Arab tribal fighters in confronting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), just days after defecting from the US-backed Kurdish militia.

The newly-joined tribesmen were previously affiliates of SDF's Deir Ezzor Military Council (DEMC) and operated under the central operations room in Al-Busayrah.

It is worth noting that armed clashes broke out last week between armed tribal groups and affiliates of the DEMC, on one side, and the SDF, on the other, in the northern and western countryside of Deir Ezzor Governorate.

The fighting erupted after the Kurdish militia arrested the head of the military council, Ahmad Abu Khawla also known as Ahmed Khabil. The Arab leader was lured by the SDF to a senior meeting in the rural areas of Al-Hasakah and subsequently detained.

US supporting SDF in Deir ez-Zor
By Wladimir van Wilgenburg

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The US-led Special Operations Joint Task Force-Levant (SOJTF LEVANT) on Saturday Combined Special Operations Joint Task Force - Levant in a statement on Friday confirmed they will continue to support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the enduring defeat of ISIS (a.k.a. Daesh in Arabic)

This news comes amidst continued tensions between the SDF and tribal fighters in Deir ez-Zor.

“Southwest Asia - Combined Special Operations Joint Task Force — Levant continues to closely monitor events in northeast Syria. We remain focused on working with the Democratic Forces to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh, in support of regional security and stability,” it said.

It also warned that “distractions from this critical work create instability and increase the risk of [a] Daesh (ISIS) resurgence.”

“The violence in northeast Syria must cease, and the effort returned to creating peace and stability in northeast Syria, free from the threat of Daesh,” it added.

The SOJTF LEVANT oversees US Special Operations activities in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt, and in 2021 it replaced the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, which was focused only on Iraq and Syria.

“The Combined Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve reaffirms its focus on advising, assisting and enabling partner forces in the enduring defeat of Daesh,” the statement said.

Also on Friday, the US Embassy in Syria called “on all parties to de-escalate and peacefully resolve the situation.”

The US-led Coalition against ISIS also stated “violence must cease in northeast Syria”, after dozens of people were killed in clashes between the SDF and tribal fighters.

Since Aug. 27, heavy clashes broke out between the SDF and Arab tribes in Deir ez-Zor, after the SDF arrested and dismissed Abu Khawla, the head of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council, an Arab majority group that was part of the SDF and fought against ISIS.

After the fighting, the SDF withdrew from Al-Baghouz, Hajin, Al-Shafah, and Al-Susah in Deir ez-Zor.

Reportedly on Saturday, the SDF and tribal figures met in a coalition base to negotiate terms and end the infighting in Deir ez-Zor.

Syrian soldiers killed

16 Syrian soldiers were martyred following fierce confrontations against militants from armed terrorist groups in the northern region of Latakia, Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported on Saturday

Additionally, five other soldiers sustained injuries during the violent clash and have since been transported to hospitals for immediate medical attention. The severity of their injuries remains undisclosed at this time.

A multitude of Western-backed terrorist organizations arose in Syria in the wake of the US-led war that has been waged against the country, all of whom have been fighting against the legitimate Syrian Arab Army that has managed to eradicate many similar groups.

This comes amid heavy fighting in Syria's east as the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces are engaging in clashes with Arab tribes east of the Euphrates.

SDF announced that they are launching a military operation to confront Arab tribes in the country's east as an Al Mayadeen correspondent said SDF used artillery and grad MLRS to bomb the town of al-Busaryah in Deir Ezzor Eastern countryside.

Violent clashes erupted once again on Saturday between fighters belonging to the "Syrian National Army" (SNA), a group supported by Turkey, and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the western outskirts of Manbij in the countryside of Aleppo.

SNA fighters are making a concerted effort to advance in the direction of the Am Adasa village in western Manbij, Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported. This advance is accompanied by a barrage of heavy artillery and rocket fire from both sides.

This latest escalation comes on the heels of Russian airstrikes on Friday, targeting five positions that the SNA fighters had previously occupied in a village in eastern Aleppo. These areas have been under the control of the US-backed SDF, while the Russian military, in coordination with the Syrian government, is actively working to thwart the expansion of the SNA in northern Syria.

The strikes came after days-long clashes between the so-called "National Army" and SDF on the Manbij front.

Simultaneously, the "Syrian National Army" is said to have opened crossings for individuals from local tribes willing to join the fight against the SDF in Manbij and Al-Bab. This move was reportedly realized through a joint attack by the SNA and armed groups claiming to be tribal members, targeting several villages on two fronts.

Turkish-affiliated SNA posted videos claiming they had "taken control of the villages of Arab Hasan and Al-Mushannaleh" in the countryside of Manbij and Al-Bab, while the spokesperson for the SDF-affiliated Manbij Military Council, Sharfan Darwish, quickly denied "any news of mercenaries gaining control over any point or checkpoint in the villages and towns of the countryside of Manbij and Al-Bab."

Recent Clashes Claims 71

Recent clashes in Western Kurdistan's province of Deir ez-Zor have resulted in a high death toll of 71 individuals, mostly fighters, including nine civilians, raising concerns over Arab-Kurdish relations in the region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported

On August 27, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested Ahmad Khabil, also known as Abu Khawla, the commander of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council. This arrest led to local Arab backlash, escalating into clashes across several villages.

The pace of development accelerated as the pro-Regime forces moved into the conflict zone along the Euphrates River. Subsequently, the SDF imposed a 48-hour curfew in the area, commencing on September 1.

Analysts warn of potential escalation and its impact on Arab-Kurdish relations in this sensitive area, emphasizing the high death toll as a central concern.

In response to the clashes, US officials held a meeting with the SDF and tribal leaders in Deir ez-Zor on Sunday. They emphasized the importance of reducing violence promptly and warned against foreign intervention in the province.

Moreover, Ankara-backed Syrian Islamist groups, claiming affiliation with Arab tribes, also joined the fray, attacking areas under SDF control in northern Syria to support local fighters in Deir ez-Zor.

The SDF, for its part, maintained that it had no disputes with the Arab tribes and urged residents to refrain from involvement in such conflicts, asserting constant communication with the tribes.

Deir ez-Zor province, located on the Syrian-Iraqi border, is predominantly Arab and home to numerous Arab tribes. It also hosts Syria's major oil fields and is controlled by the SDF, a coalition of Kurdish and Arab factions.

SDF advances into Thiban
By Wladimir van Wilgenburg

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Nine members of the local gunmen were killed in Thiban town in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, as a result of the continuation of the armed clashes between the SDF and supporters of Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Hifl

“The SDF advanced into the town and took control of more than half of the town, amid the continuation of the battles between both sides,” the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

Update: The village of Al-Hawayij, adjacent to the Dhiban town in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, has been successfully cleared by our forces. Moreover, earlier today the SDF media centre said the Al-Hawayij, adjacent to the Dhiban town in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, "has been successfully cleared by our forces."

"Now our forces are advancing towards the main street in the village. Four Syria regime NDF (National Defense Forces) members were captured during the clashes."

This also comes amidst rumours that Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Hifl fled to Syrian-government controlled areas on the west bank of Deir ez-Zor.

However, Naher media claimed the tribal leader is still directing battles in Thiban.

Moreover, SOHR said so far 70 gunmen remain in Thiban, whose surrender is being negotiated.

Earlier today, SDF took control of Hawaij Thiban, and managed to advance towards Al-Tayanah town, east of Hawij Thiban in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor and take control of about 40 percent of Thiban town after violent battles.

Accordingly, the death toll since the beginning of the clashes on August 27 between the SDF and rival armed groups, has reached 84 persons, including nine civilians.

The conflict erupted when SDF dismissed and arrested Abu Khawla, the former leader of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council.

UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in a report on Monday said the humanitarian community “continues to call on all parties to the conflict and advocate for free and unimpeded movement and evacuation of injured patients and ambulances through conflict lines.”

Moreover, it said critical public infrastructure is reported damaged, destroyed, or vandalized/looted, resulting in heightened risks for civilian access to food, electricity and health services.

“This reportedly includes at least two area hospitals. Three water treatment facilities (Thiban, Darnaj and Al-Jardhi stations) serving 15,000 people have been damaged and are non-operational,” the report said.

Who were in these town and villages first Arabs or SDF?

What gives SDF the right to take over Arab villages?

US-backed SDF end operations

The US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces declared the "end of military operations" in Syria's east, namely Deir Ezzor, after days-long clashes with the Arab tribal forces that killed around 90 people

The fighting erupted after the Kurdish militia arrested the head of the military council, Ahmad Abu Khawla also known as Ahmed Khabil. The Arab leader was lured by the SDF to a senior meeting in the rural areas of Al-Hasakah and subsequently detained.

Furthermore, the SDF went on an arrest spree and apprehended several leaders of the DEMC after raiding their homes in the Khasham and Al-Aziziyah neighborhoods in Al-Hasakah

Nawaf Abdul Aziz Al-Muslat, the Emir of Jabour tribes in Syria and the Arab world, declared general mobilization of his tribe members and announced joining the battle alongside the tribesmen against SDF in Deir Ezzor.

SDF spokesman Farhad Shami told AFP that the "military operations in Dhebian have ended," though SDF forces were still searching districts of the town for remaining fighters.

"Neighbourhoods are being searched for armed groups coming from the western bank of the Euphrates," Shami told the agency.

Control of the province is split between the US-backed SDF armed groups to the east of the Euphrates River and the Syrian government forces to the West.

Deir Ezzor, which the United States wants to establish as a foothold, is highly rich in resources and borders Iraq, which allows Washington and its allies to smuggle oil right into Iraq, plundering Syria without being held accountable.
After arresting the top Arab tribal leader, SDF armed groups announced that they were launching a military operation to confront Arab tribes East of the Euphrates River.

Arab tribes took control of the entire river line opposite the Syrian army positions in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, local sources confirmed.

An Al Mayadeen correspondent reported that SDF armed groups used Artillery and grad MLRS to bomb the town of Al-Busayrah in Deir Ezzor Eastern countryside after Arab Tribal fighters took control of it.

SNA attempts to lure Arab tribes

Simultaneously, the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army is said to have opened crossings for individuals from local tribes willing to join the fight against the SDF in Manbij and Al-Bab. This move was reportedly realized through a joint attack by the SNA and armed groups claiming to be tribal members, targeting several villages on two fronts.

Turkish-affiliated SNA posted videos claiming they had "taken control of the villages of Arab Hasan and Al-Mushannaleh" in the countryside of Manbij along Al-Bab, while the spokesperson for the SDF-affiliated Manbij Military Council, Sharfan Darwish, quickly denied "any news of mercenaries gaining control over any point or checkpoint in the villages and towns of the countryside of Manbij and Al-Bab."

Darwish confirmed "their forces' readiness to repel all attacks" and that "the clashes are ongoing in the villages of Al-Mushannaleh, Arab Hasan, Um Jalloud, Al-Sayyadah, and Al-Dandaniyah."

The Turkish forces, on their part, have intermittently targeted areas under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, predominantly consisting of Kurdish fighters, in northern and northeastern Syria, using both drones and artillery.

Fighting between rival US-backed groups

The weeklong clashes between rival U.S.-backed militias where hundreds of American troops are (illegally) deployed, point to dangerous seams in the coalition that has kept a lid on the defeated Islamic State group for years. That could be an opportunity for the radical group to reemerge

The violence also points to rising tensions between Kurds who dominate the region and the mainly Arab population, opening the door for Syrian President Bashar Assad and his allies, Russia and Iran, to try to make inroads in an oil-rich territory where they seek to drive out U.S. troops and restore Damascus’ rule.

Eastern Syria has largely been off the world’s radar, particularly in the United States. But the U.S. has had some 900 troops stationed there alongside an unknown number of contractors ever since the defeat of the Islamic State group in 2019. The troops, who first arrived eight years ago, work alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces, an umbrella group of militias dominated by Kurdish fighters.

At the same time, a U.S.-supported Kurdish-led administration has governed parts of northern Syria and most of Syria east of the Euphrates River, including key oil fields, with government forces and Iranian-backed militias positioned just across the river on the western bank. The region’s Arabs have roles in both the SDF and the administration but have long resented the Kurdish control.

The clashes involve the Syrian Democratic Forces and an allied faction, the Arab-led Deir el-Zour Military Council. The trigger was the Aug. 27 arrest by the SDF of the council’s commander Ahmad Khbeil, better known as Abu Khawla. The SDF accused Khbeil of criminal activity, corruption and of opening up contacts with the Damascus government and Iranian-backed militias.

Fighting broke out between the SDF and Khbeil’s loyalists, who were then joined by hundreds of Arab tribesmen in battles that spread and left tribesmen in control of several villages outside the city of Deir el-Zour. At least 90 people have been killed and dozens wounded.

Kurdish leaders accuse Iranian-backed militias and the Syrian government of fomenting the violence. Speaking to The Associated Press, SDF spokesman Farhad Shami denied local Arab fighters joined the clashes, saying it was fighters loyal to Damascus who crossed the river.

“Iran and Assad regime want to depict this unrest as a result of an ethnic conflict between Arabs and Kurds,” Elham Ahmad, the leader of the Syrian Democratic Council, the political wing of the SDF, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. Their ultimate aim, she said, was to force U.S. troops to leave.

But some warn the violence reflects local Arab resentment of Kurdish domination. Opposition activists said contacts were underway with tribal leaders to reach a cease-fire.

“This is an unprecedented escalation between SDF and Deir el-Zour residents,” says Omar Abu Layla, a Europe-based activist who heads the Deir Ezzor 24 media outlet, which covers news in the region.

“This is an indication of the bad policy implemented by the SDF and wrong calculations by the Americans,” said Abu Layla. He said the solution could be to name a replacement for Khbeil and give Arabs more influence in local councils.

If the fighting endures, it could deepen Kurdish-Arab rifts. That could open the door for IS remnants to attempt a comeback.

The U.S. military has called for an end to the fighting, warning that “distractions (from opposing IS) create instability and increase the risk of Daesh resurgence,” using the Arab acronym for the Islamic State group.

Over the weekend, a meeting was held among SDF figures, tribal leaders and U.S. officials, including Maj. Gen. Joel Vowell, the commander of Operation Inherent Resolve, which oversees U.S. military operations against IS, the U.S. Embassy announced. It said they agreed on the “importance of addressing the grievances of residents” in Deir el-Zour, avoiding civilian deaths and the need for de-escalation as soon as possible.

The SDF pushed ahead in their offensive over the weekend, capturing two villages and surrounding the main Arab tribesmen's stronghold in Diban. SDF chief commander Mazloum Abdi told a local news agency that the U.S.-led coalition helped with aerial support during the offensive, but the U.S. military did not confirm or deny when contacted by The Associated Press.

ISIS once controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria but was defeated after a long, grueling war led by the U.S. and allies including the SDF. The radical group lost its last sliver of land in eastern Syria in 2019, but its fugitive cells hiding in the region have continued low-level attacks, killing dozens over the years.

Myles B. Caggins III, senior fellow at the New Lines Institute, said the clashes “present an opportunity for ISIS cells that nest in the Euphrates River Valley to emerge.”

The violence also could give an opportunity for Damascus and Iran, pushing their demands for the Americans to leave.

The commander of the pro-government Baqir Brigade militia, Khaled al-Hassan, told an Iranian media outlet that the violence “is a new uprising by Syrians against the American occupation and its militias,” referring to the SDF.

During a recent visit to Iran, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad warned that “American occupation forces should withdraw ... before they are forced to do so.”

In mid-July, dozens of Arab tribesmen and members of the pro-government National Defense Forces held a rally in Deir el-Zour province that was attended by a Russian general.

“The end of American forces will be at the hands of Arab tribesmen who stand behind the Syrian army,” an NDF commander said during the ceremony.

In March, a suspected Iranian-linked drone attack hit a U.S. base, killing a contractor and wounding another, along with five American troops. American warplanes responded with airstrikes on sites used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. President Joe Biden said the U.S. would respond “forcefully” to protect its personnel.

“Iran, Russia, and the Syrian regime have a shared interest in the departure of U.S. forces from Syria,” according to a report released last month by The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington think tank.

Crucial for Tehran, Iran has had a land corridor of allies linking it to the Mediterranean Sea ever since Syrian forces and Iranian-backed militias captured areas along the border with Iraq from IS in 2017.

Last week’s clashes came after Lebanese and Arab media outlets reflecting Iran’s point of view claimed that the Americans intended to sever that link by capturing the strategic border town of Boukamal.

The coalition’s commanding general, U.S. Maj. Gen. Matthew McFarlane denied the reports. “The coalition is not preparing for military operations to cut off anybody except Daesh,” he said.

But Iran and its allies say any attempt to close the Iraq-Syria border is a red line.

“I see that closing the gate between Damascus and Baghdad as a declaration of war,” said Syrian political analyst Bassam Abu Abdullah, whose comments usually reflect the government’s point of view.

US looting billions of Syrian oil

Syria calls on the United Nations to take action, seeking accountability from the United States for ongoing oil, gas, and wheat looting

Syria has strongly condemned ongoing violations of its sovereignty and extensive resource plundering by the United States and affiliated terrorist organizations and militias, state-run Syrian news agency SANA reported.

The Syrian government has called for American officials to be held accountable for these actions and for the US administration to be forced to compensate for them.

In a formal communication addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council, Syria urged the international community to intervene and put an end to the aggressive practices that are being perpetrated by the United States.

These practices, according to the letter, violate the principles of international law and the provisions of the UN Charter. The violations primarily pertain to the presence of US military forces on Syrian territory, as an occupying force, notably in the northeast and the al-Tanf region in the southeast of the country.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates indicated that the US, along with its proxies in the form of terrorist organizations and militias, continue to violate Syrian sovereignty and exploit the nation's wealth and strategic resources.

The United States' plundering of billions worth of Syrian oil and wheat exacerbates the impact of its illegal unilateral sanctions on the country which have led to suffering among Syrians.

According to the Ministry, the cumulative damage inflicted on Syria's oil and mineral wealth sector as a result of aggressive acts, looting, and sabotage carried out by US forces and their associated groups amounts to a staggering $115.2 billion. This damage has been accrued over the period from 2011 up to the first half of 2023.

The Ministry provided a breakdown of the losses within the oil sector, with direct losses estimated at $27.5 billion. These losses were attributed to several factors.

The ministry pointed to the theft, waste, and destruction of approximately 341 million barrels of extracted oil, totaling $21.4 billion. The rate of theft ranged from 100,000 to 150,000 barrels per day, along with 59.9 million cubic meters of natural gas and 413,000 tons of domestic gas.

Next, Syria revealed vandalism and the theft of production facilities as a factor that has resulted in damages estimated at $3.2 billion. Airstrikes by the US-led coalition on Syrian oil and gas facilities caused approximately $2.9 billion in damages.

Additionally, the Ministry pointed out that indirect losses, amounting to $87.7 billion, represent the value of lost benefits due to reduced production rates below the norm under typical working conditions.

Syria is now demanding accountability from American officials for these alleged thefts and is calling on the U.S. administration to compensate for the losses put an end to the illegal occupation of Syrian territories and compensation for stolen natural resources to the Syrian state. Such measures, Syria stresses, are essential to improving the humanitarian and living conditions of the Syrian people.

Senior PKK Fighter Killed

Turkey's security forces have "neutralized" a senior member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in a cross-border operation in northern Syria, according to the country's state media

"The Turkish intelligence targeted Muhtesim Akyurek, codenamed Serhat Serhildan, in an operation in the Amude region," Anadolu Agency reported on Monday.

The intelligence agency closely followed the terrorist, who was responsible for training activities in the region. Akyurek, who joined the rural structure of the terror group in 2015, received ideological and armed training."

Ankara uses the term "neutralize" to imply actions like killing, capturing, or surrendering in relation to its operations against the PKK.

For nearly four decades, Turkey and the PKK have been engaged in a prolonged armed conflict, leading to deadly repercussions that extend beyond Turkey's borders. The PKK maintains its positions and umbrella groups in neighboring Syria as well as in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Renewed clashes with SDF

The chief of the Akidat tribe has announced general mobilization against the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces

Tribal fighters launched a wide-scale attack on Monday against positions held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Dhebian, in eastern Deir Ezzor, local sources told Al Mayadeen Net.

Sources confirmed that tribal militants have taken control of part of the town, disabling several vehicles and killing several among the SDF's ranks.

The chief of the Akidat tribe in Syria, Ibrahim al-Hifl, announced the start of a "new battle" by Arab tribes against the SDF forces, calling for a general mobilization in the countryside of Deir Ezzor to support the engaged tribal forces

Al-Hifl also urged his supporters, whom he described as "sons of the Euphrates," to impose Arab representation in the Deir Ezzor regional administration and reclaim their land and dignity.

The SDF has declared a general curfew in eastern Deir Ezzor encompassing the area extending from the town of al-Shuhayl to al-Baghuz, Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported.

A few days earlier, Sheikh al-Hifl had announced the formation of a military leadership for the tribes and clans army in the countryside of Deir Ezzor. He called on tribe members to launch attacks on SDF positions after the latter had declared an end to clashes on September 6 in the area, claiming to have regained control of the entire eastern Deir Ezzor.

The fighting erupted after the Kurdish-dominated militia arrested the head of the Deir Ezzor military council (DEMC), Ahmad Abu Khawla also known as Ahmed Khabil.

Control of the province is split between the US-backed SDF to the east of the Euphrates River and the Syrian government forces to the West.

Deir Ezzor is highly rich in resources and borders Iraq. The US currently occupies several areas in the governorate, which has allowed it to loot and smuggle energy resources into Iraq.

Eastern Syria is still very tribal (comparing with Western Syria) and clashes between Kurds and Arab tribes have a long history. The anti-Kurdish pogroms in 2004 started with a fight between Kurds and these tribes.

I think that the growth of illegal US bases has made the situation much more volatile

I have had many friends from Western Kurdistan and the original Kurdish population were PROUD to be Kurdish and fought for an Independent Western Kurdistan

The SDF moved in and told the people that they will NOT be allowed to have an Independent Western Kurdistan and in fact removed the word Kurdistan from Kurdish land X(

Israel strikes Syria Army

A military source told the news agency that around 11:50 pm Monday, the Israeli occupation carried out an aerial attack on some of the positions of the Syrian armed forces in the vicinity of Deir Ezzor city, adding that the strike resulted in injuries to two soldiers and caused some material losses

The aggression comes at a time when Deir Ezzor is witnessing frequent clashes between the US-backed Kurdish militant group, the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF, and Arab tribes.

Syria has been able to regain control to the West of the Euphrates River in the province after years of falling under American-backed terrorist groups, while east of the river today lies under SDF's control backed by US troops and bases.

On September 13, the Israeli military, in a rare occurrence, targeted Syria in two separate attacks during the same day.

The first strike targeted the province of Tartus just hours before Israeli war jets carried out the second aggression targeting Homs Governorate in central Syria launched from off the coast of Lebanon.

Despite continued calls for the international community to address the situation, Syria has been left in the cold, with only regional allies to rely on for military support to repel foreign aggression.

On August 31, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that these attacks against Syria would not go unanswered.

Insurgent attacks continue on SDF
By Wladimir van Wilgenburg

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Arab fighters have continued to attack positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir ez-Zor and the SDF have stepped up arrests of suspected gunmen

On Wednesday, the SDF arrested nearly 20 people in the Nazl Al-Faour area in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, accusing them of carrying out sabotage acts, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

On Wednesday, Syrian government forces also opened fire on SDF positions across the river.

Also on Monday, Syrian government forces shelled the SDF-held town of Hajin in Deir ez-Zor.

The eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor is controlled by the SDF forces, while the western bank is controlled by the Syrian government and Iranian-backed armed groups.

Moreover, local gunmen attacked a commander of the SDF in Deir ez-Zor, in which one civilian was killed and four were injured, the SOHR reported on Tuesday.

The commander’s car was targeted with an improvised explosive device (IED), after which gunmen attacked the car.

On Monday, two gunmen died from their injuries in clashes that took place between SDF and local gunmen in Al-Rabida Town in the northern Deir ez-Zor countryside.

Also on Monday, the SDF also arrested eight civilians on charges of helping rival Arab fighters in al-Sousah in Deir ez-Zor. Furthermore, on Sept. 27, three men were arrested by the Kurdish Asayish forces in Al-Hawa’aj town in eastern Deir ez-Zor.

From Aug. 27 to Sept. 12, heavy clashes broke out between the SDF and rival Arab militants in Deir ez-Zor, after the SDF arrested and dismissed Abu Khawla, the head of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council.

Some tribes in Deir ez-Zor have supported the insurgents against the SDF, while others stayed neutral or backed the SDF.

Also on Sept. 25, fighting resumed when rival fighters again attacked SDF fighters near Dhiban. However, by Sept. 26, the SDF regained their positions.

The SOHR said in a report that at least 118 people, including ten civilians, were killed in the two rounds of violent clashes between local gunmen from Deir ez-Zor countryside and members of the SDF.

The SDF has accused the Syrian government of backing tribal leader Ibrahim al-Hifl and tribal fighters in stirring unrest in Deir ez-Zor and launching insurgent attacks on the SDF. Supporters of al-Hifl have denied the accusations of regime support.

In a voice message last week, al-Hifl also called for continued attacks on the SDF.

The US-led coalition earlier called on tribal leaders to repel the influence of malign actors.

“It is imperative that all local leaders resist the influence of malign actors who promise many rewards but will deliver only suffering to the peoples of the area,” US-led Special Operations Joint Task Force-Levant (SOJTF LEVANT) said in an earlier statement.

Farhad Shami, the head of SDF’s Media Center, said during an interview with Rojava TV on Tuesday, that al-Hifl is under house arrest by the Syrian government, which prevents him from surrendering to the SDF.
