We are still at war:
Syria's Kurds battle Turkey

In January, Kobane's Kurds celebrated 10 years since they broke ISIS's siege of the city, but their future is unclear

To reach north-east Syria, we cross a rickety floating bridge over the River Tigris. Our minibus rattles as it takes us from Iraqi Kurdistan through Syrian oil fields, where jacks pumping crude oil line the roads.

This part of Syria is controlled by Kurds, Western Kurdistan. Since 2012, after the outbreak of civil war, they have run it as a self-declared autonomous region, protected by Kurdish-led armed forces.

But Bashar al-Assad's regime never recognised it and, despite his fall from power, its future remains uncertain.

As well as more than a decade of civil war, the Syrian Kurds have faced years of conflict with its northern neighbour, Turkey - a battle they are still fighting.

The fight against ISIS

A decade ago, the Islamic State group (ISIS) swept through this region, capturing cities and villages with little resistance - until it reached the city of Kobane, next to the Turkish border, in September 2014.

ISIS militants didn't manage to enter the city, but they imposed a brutal siege that lasted for months.

Kurdish-led factions, supported by the US-led military coalition, broke the siege in early 2015. This January, I join the city's residents as they mark the 10-year anniversary.

At the entrance to Kobane, women in their 50s, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, guard the checkpoints. Women played a crucial role in the fight against ISIS - many volunteered in the all-female Women's Protection Units (YPJ).

Entrances into Kobane are marked with checkpoints

As we drive around the city, the scars of war are still visible, along with posters of young men and women who lost their lives.

But in the main square, the mood is festive. Young girls and boys, dressed in colourful Kurdish outfits dance hand in hand, singing as they celebrate.

For the older generation, though, it is a bittersweet moment. "Last night I lit candles for my martyred brother and others killed in Kobane," says Newrouz Ahmad, a 45-year-old mother of four. "It is a joyful day, but also a painful one. I wish he was here to see it."

Conflict with Turkey

Newrouz Ahmad's brother died in the ISIS siege - she says the Kurds "won't allow Turkey and its proxies to occupy our city"

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) declared victory over ISIS in north-east Syria in 2019. But freedom from ISIS hasn't brought lasting peace.

Turkey and a coalition of Turkish-backed rebel groups known as the Syrian National Army (SNA) have launched several military operations against SDF-controlled territories since 2016, and captured a swathe of territory running along hundreds of kilometres of the border.

Turkey considers the largest component in the SDF - the People's Protection Units (YPG) - an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has fought for Kurdish rights in Turkey for decades and is listed by Ankara as a terrorist organisation. The country wants to push the SDF back from its border.

As the Assad regime collapsed in late 2024, the Turkish-backed SNA launched a new offensive to capture territory west of the River Euphrates from the SDF.

Now battles have reached areas near Kobane. A Kurdish commander in the city quietly tells me: "Don't film here, we have built tunnels beneath the city to prepare for another siege."

In the city, the smell of gasoline fills the air, and the deafening sound of generators can be heard everywhere. Locals tell me that most of the power stations, refineries, and even telecommunications antennas have been destroyed by Turkish air strikes over the past two years.

Newrouz Ahmad says that having "defeated ISIS in Kobane… we won't allow Turkey and its proxies to occupy our city, we will defeat them too".

At a restaurant, the moment people realise we are not locals, they surround us. I ask an old man with grey hair and a stick in his hands how old he is. I guess he is about 80, but the answer he gives embarrasses me. "I am 60," he says.

It's clear that people here have been exhausted by war, having witnessed so much death and bloodshed.

Reported attacks on civilians

Turkish-made drones and Turkish jets have targeted SDF positions and supply routes around the city. Even civilians protesting have been hit.

In a regional hospital, I find one of the wounded - Lea Bunse, a 28-year-old German peace activist who has been volunteering at a women's shelter in Western Kurdistan for over two years.

She shows me a video of an attack on a demonstration she says she was part of in January. The footage shows two projectiles dropping from the sky and hitting a crowd of people dancing.

The protest was held near the strategic Tishreen Dam, where fighting has been ongoing. The SDF says six civilians were killed, and dozens more injured.

"An old man next to me was also injured," she tells me from her bed.

"I lost some blood… but when we got into the ambulance, another drone attack was carried out next to our ambulance," she adds.

Human Rights Watch has condemned an attack that hit a Kurdish Red Crescent ambulance as an "apparent war crime" by the Turkish-SNA coalition.

The Turkish foreign ministry told the BBC that "reports claiming Turkey is involved in the attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure do not reflect the truth" adding that the SDF sends civilians to a "conflict-ridden area on purpose" to use them as "human shields… in order to not to lose control on the said dam".

It accused the SDF of using "violence and terror" to pursue "its own separatist agenda", violating a ceasefire and stopping technical teams from getting access to the dam for repairs.

The Damascus dilemma

Syria's new leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

The interim president - whose Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) led the rebel offensive that overthrew Assad - has been promising to form an inclusive government in Damascus, and he has asked all armed factions to lay down their weapons. Negotiations are reportedly being held with the SDF to find a solution for the north-east.

But the inclusion of the Kurdish factions puts Sharaa in a difficult position with one of his main allies – Turkey.

And when Sharaa opened a conference for national dialogue on Syria's future on Tuesday, the Kurdish autonomous administration was absent - it said it had not been invited.

Gen Mazloum Abdi of the SDF says he has met Syria's interim president but no deal has been reached yet

Speaking to me from a discreet location near an American base in Hassakeh province in the north-east of Syria, SDF commander Gen Mazloum Abdi tells me he has met Sharaa in Damascus before.

The two sides have not reached an agreement

"In reality, we are still at war with Turkey and its proxies. Turkish jets and drones continue to bomb us," he says, adding: "In Damascus, it remains unclear what steps the new government will take. Their statements are positive, but they are under pressure from Turkey to act against the areas under our control.

"But the US, France, and some Arab nations are pushing them to recognize Kurdish rights," he says.

For the US, SDF fighters have been the most reliable allies in the fight against ISIS.

Today, hundreds of US troops remain in Kurdish-controlled areas, to counter ISIS sleeper cells.

But the Kurds now fear President Donald Trump might withdraw these troops, leaving the region vulnerable to any Turkish military operation, and a possible ISIS resurgence.

It's estimated that there are still about 40,000 ISIS family members and up to 10,000 jihadist fighters held in SDF-controlled camps and prisons in the north-east, says Gen Abdi.

"If Turkey attacks, we will have no choice but to redirect our forces," he warns. "That would give ISIS an opportunity to attack prisons and free its fighters."

Uncertain future

YPJ spokesperson Roksana Mohamed wants assurances that women's rights will be protected

There is further uncertainty for the women who fought against ISIS in the all-female YPJ ranks.

The walls in the office of 29-year-old YPJ spokesperson Roksana Mohamed are covered with pictures of fellow female commanders killed in battle.

"So far, we haven't seen any roles given to women in Damascus' new leadership," she says. "Why shouldn't a woman be defence minister?"

Ms Mohamed says women fought for their rights in this region. They have been actively involved in every aspect of political, social, and military life.

"If our rights are not respected, how can we be expected to lay down our arms?" she asks.

So while some believe stability in Syria is on the horizon, for the Kurds, the future remains unclear. Will they be recognised as partners in a new Syria, or face another existential battle?

A lifetime of struggling for an Independent Kurdistan

On 29.April.2005 British Prime Minister has welcomed Dr Jawad Mella President of Western Kurdistan Government, The meeting that took place in London, the capital of the United Kingdom, Dr Jawad Mella discussed issues regarding the Kurdistan region in general and Western Kurdistan particularly and the latest genocide and massacre of the Kurds in the city of Qamishlo by the Syrian regime. He also handed a Kurdistan flag and an English version of his book and another one of Professor Jemal Nebez’s book as a present to the British PM.

Dr Jawad Mella informed Mr Blair in the meeting, despite the fact of bombardment of Halabja by chemical gas, which by itself is the best evidence of Saddam‘s weapon of mass destruction, the British public had nfortunately still criticized him and his government for liberating Iraq, and toppling Saddam’s regime. This was only because the multinational force in Iraq could not find any weapon of mass destruction, even though it is well known to the whole world who killed and buried alive innocent people in the mass graves and the systematic genocide of the Kurds.

Mr Blair and Dr Mella went further and discussed many significant issues together with the latest developments in Kurdistan region and the two had an important exchange of views.

Dr Mella thanked Mr Blair for his crucial role “I on behalf of the Kurdish community in the UK and Kurds in Kurdistan thank you and President Bush for your unforgettable and a moral action for liberating Iraq for Iraqis, because if it was not for you, we would have always been ruled by a bloodthirsty dictator, in return Mr Blair made it clear and expressed his delight at receiving Kurdistan’s Flag, and the valuable views and position of Dr Jawad Mella. Mr Blair also said he is extremely glad to hear the concerns of Dr Jawad Mella regarding Western Kurdistan.

At the end, Mr Blair added and said “We are closely following developments in the region and are well informed about the Kurdish position and are working hard to help the Kurds in every way we can”. Dr Jawad Mella on the other hand described the talks as constructive, positive and a starting point for further improvement in mutual relations and common interests.

Self-Governance Agreement in West Kurdistan

1. At first, this agreement should be said is not equal, in favor of Turkey and the transitional government of Syria, but a kind of surrender by the region's self-administration. The agreement also consists of a public speech, it lacks details.

2. It is certain that the self-governing of this agreement came as a result of the circumstances in Cairo that forced it to sign it, and there is one or more factor who has contributed to the compulsion of self-governance of the agreement, and these factors are:

ا. The Self-Administration is reporting the withdrawal of American troops from the region in the near future or the Self-administration is subjected to American pressure and the rest of the members of the International Alliance to establish the agreement, as this agreement was blessed by America and welcomed by the US Department of State.
ب. Turkish military pressure through Turkish attacks and mercenary attacks of the Turkish regime.
ت. The recognition of the Arab and Turkish governments of the legitimacy of the new Syrian political system and also the desire of the European Union to lift sanctions on Syria. This in turn contributed to the acceptance of self-government by this agreement.

.. There may be differences between members of the Democratic Union Party regarding the future of the region and the stance of the new Syrian regime. There may also be differences between the Kurds on one hand, the Arabs and other ethnic components living in the region on the other hand which forced the self-administration to anticipate this Islamic agreement.

ج. The self-administration may have executed Ocalan's orders to drop weapons. Here I would like to mention that Mr. Abdullah Ocalan is a prisoner of the Turkish regime, he is not free and without a will, therefore it was a duty for the leadership of the Kurdistan Labor Party to elect a new president or a joint political leadership of the party after Ocalan was abducted and not to link the fate of the party and the people of Kurdistan to a leader who is imprisoned without his will
Now it is not too late for the Kurdistan Labor Party to withdraw from the influences and orders of Ocalan and draw its own strategies. Remember the implement the ideas of Ocalan that have emerged in recent years have destroyed Kurdish nationalism and adopt the project "Democratic Nation of Brotherhood with Turks" which cannot be succeeded in hundreds of years.

This project is a major disaster for the people of Kurdistan and their struggle for liberation and independence. These ideas have caused the poisoning of the minds of many Kurdish youth and they have been tricked away from Kurdistan national thought.

3. The Islamic terrorists who have taken over Syria cannot be trusted. As these are unqualified to judge, they are barbaric Islamists, our time rejects their dark, backward ideas. These are made up of Syrian militias along with Chechen, Turkmen, Uzbekistan, Turkish mercenaries, and others. These militias are uncoordinated and will fight between them and create chaos and instability in Syria.

4. The Kurdistan leadership in the Western Kurdistan Region should know that Syria cannot remain a united state, it becomes national, religious and religious cantons, where the Drouz in southern Syria become under Israeli control, the upper areas may become under Russian influence and protection, where Israel wants Russian bases to remain in Syria to judge Turkish influence in Syria.

America and Israel never allow Turkey to take control of Syria and re-establish the Ottoman State. The Sunni Arab regions will be under the influence of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egyptian governments, while the Western Kurdistan region will be an ally to Israel, America and other Western countries. Therefore, the Kurdistan Region must maneuver and retain its forces and weapons, where major changes and developments will take place during this year and will certainly be in the favor of the people of Kurdistan.

5. The project of redrawing the political map of the Middle East region will be in the interest of Israel, Kurdistan, America and other Western countries and will result in the weakening and division of both Iran and Turkey and harming Russian and Chinese interests in the region.

6. The people of Kurdistan are the only strategic ally of the Israeli people in the Middle East region, and that Israel knows that the establishment of the State of Kurdistan is the only guarantee of Israel's survival as a state, so the people of Kurdistan can assure that the State of Kurdstan is coming and will play a central role in the region and an influential role in world politics.

7. The population of Kurds reaches more than half of the population of Syria, where for example there are 700,000 seven hundred thousand Kurds in Hama province alone who are proud of their Kurdishness. Therefore the Kurd should dissolve all their parties in the region and establish a new party that includes all the Syrian Kurd.

As the alliance with Druze and Christians should be, so the Kurds can rule Syria, which is historically part of Kurdistan, and then the Kurds and Israelis become neighbors and form a strategic alliance together to change the face of the Middle East and eliminate dark and racist ideas so that the people of the region live in peace, harmony, cooperation and prosperity.

8. The setbacks that the Kurdistan may get will be in the short term, while in the long term, the features of the state of Kurdistan will appear during the crystal features of the re-drawing project of the map of the Middle East region that started since October 7, November 1, 2023

The citizens of Kurdistan should not break their will and their morale be discouraged and they should know that we are living in the era of renaissance Kurdistan and the sun of freedom and independence will shine in the sky of Kurdistan soon

Kurds Protest Against
New Syrian Constitution

Thousands of Kurds took to the streets of Qamishli in Syrian Kurdistan on Tuesday to protest against the newly announced Syrian constitution, demanding formal recognition of Kurdish rights

Demonstrators carried banners rejecting the constitution, chanting slogans such as: “The declared constitution does not represent us and must be rewritten by everyone,” and “We are partners in this country, the Kurdish issue is the issue of people and nation. Syria is democratic and Syria is decentralized.”

The protesters strongly opposed the constitution’s designation of Syria as an “Arab Republic,” arguing that it marginalizes Kurdish identity. Activists urged the new Syrian administration to revise the draft and enshrine Kurdish rights in the country’s legal framework.

Many demonstrators wore traditional Kurdish clothing and carried Kurdistan flags, expressing solidarity with Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani for his role in promoting Kurdish unity in Syrian Kurdistan.

They also chanted, “Syria is sweet, but Kurdistan is sweeter.”

The protest reflects growing frustration among Syria’s Kurds, who have long called for constitutional recognition and a decentralized political system that acknowledges their cultural and political rights.

KNCS, PYD Hold Talks
    on Kurdish Unity
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Presidency of the Kurdish National Council (KNCS) held a meeting with a delegation from the Democratic Union Party (PYD) on Tuesday , in Western Kurdistan. The meeting was attended by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi and the U.S. Special Envoy for the region, Scott Bowles, marking a renewed effort toward Kurdish political unity

Progress Toward a Unified Kurdish Position

The meeting was characterized by a positive atmosphere, as discussions focused on establishing a shared Kurdish political vision for Syria. Both sides agreed to finalize the remaining steps necessary to complete the agreement and announce it after Nawroz.

According to sources obtained by Kurdistan24, the talks aimed to strengthen Kurdish unity in Western Kurdistan and form a joint delegation to engage in negotiations with Damascus on Kurdish political and civil rights in Syria..

SDF commander-in-chief Mazloum Abdi, confirmed in a post on X that the meeting was positive. "The positions and perspectives of both sides were met with satisfaction. This marks the first step in negotiations aimed at achieving Kurdish unity," Abdi said.

The commander also stressed that they are determined to advance the meeting between both Kurdish sides to establish a pluralistic and democratic Syria, where the rights of all components are recognized.

This marks the second meeting within a week between the KNCS negotiating team and SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi, underscoring the intensified efforts to reach a Kurdish consensus before engaging with the Syrian government.

Joint Statement Expected

Following the conclusion of the talks, a joint statement is expected to be released outlining the results and next steps.

This latest round of discussions comes just days after a previous meeting between KNCS representatives and Mazloum Abdi, where they conducted a comprehensive review of Syria’s political landscape and future prospects.

Speaking to Kurdistan24, Faisal Yusuf, KNCS spokesperson, confirmed that both sides had exchanged views on the agreement between Syrian President Ahmed Shara and SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi.

Yusuf further stated that the two parties had reached a mutual understanding on forming a unified Kurdish delegation to initiate negotiations with Damascus regarding Kurdish rights in Syria.

Growing Political Tensions

The meeting between Kurdish political Parties comes at a time of mounting tensions following the Syrian government's recent constitutional declaration, which has drawn widespread criticism.

On Mar. 14, 2025, demonstrators took to the streets in Amuda, a city in Western Kurdistan, to protest against the newly issued constitutional document. Protesters denounced its provisions, arguing that it fails to reflect Syria’s ethnic and religious diversity and reinforces the ruling authorities' control without introducing real reforms.

The Syrian government’s announcement of its constitutional declaration on Mar. 13, 2025, has sparked heated debate across the country, particularly among marginalized ethnic and religious communities.

Both the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Kurdish National Council (ENKS) have released statements strongly criticizing the constitutional declaration, warning that it falls short of addressing the aspirations of Syria’s diverse population and risks deepening the country’s political and social fractures.

While some view it as a step toward stability, political factions and grassroots organizations have expressed deep concerns over the document’s failure to guarantee equal representation. Critics argue that it exacerbates divisions rather than fostering national reconciliation, with Kurds, Druze, and other communities feeling increasingly alienated.

Kurdish demands for Syria

An historic agreement between feuding parties in that outlines unified Kurdish demands for the new authorities in Damascus will be announced to the public early next week

“I can give the good news to our people that we, both sides, have concluded the agreement. The agreement consists of two sections: one is about the general view of Kurds about Syria.

The second one is about the Kurdish rights in Syria and their resolution. We have discussed and concluded this issue together and we have reached an agreement in this regard. This was a very important thing,” Mohammed Ismail, president of the Kurdish National Council (KNC/ENKS), told Rudaw's Nalin Hassan.

ENKS is an umbrella organization of opposition parties in Western Kurdistan that is a rival to the ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD). Washington and Paris urged them to resume stalled unity talks and join forces in Damascus after the fall of dictator Bashar al-Assad.

An American representative was present at an important meeting between them in Qamishli on Tuesday when the agreement was finalized, Ismail confirmed. The French representative was not present because he was on leave, but “he will come in the coming couple of days too,” he added.

Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), was also at the meeting.

Ismail said the agreement does not include the political or personal interests of any one person or party. “They are all Kurdish points that Kurds have been struggling for since 1957,”
The ENKS president said the agreement will be announced to the public early next week, after the Newroz holiday.

He confirmed that the agreement includes a demand for federalism, putting it in opposition to the interim constitution adopted by the transitional government in Damascus that cements authoritarian rule and has drawn criticism from Syria’s minority communities who have demanded it be re-written.

The PYD/SDF bullies and ENKS have been long-time rivals, despite previous efforts to mediate between them

Syrian Kurds struggle to repair dam

Kurdish authorities in Western Kurdistan have used nearly two weeks of no bombardment on the crucial Tishreen Dam to repair damages caused by months of attacks by militia groups

The dam, located southeast of Manbij city on the Euphrates River, was constructed in 1999 and is one of Syria’s largest in terms of production and capacity. It generates electricity and once provided power to much of Western Kurdistan.

But Turkey and the Syrian militia groups it supports have launched attacks on the structure since November, seeking to control the dam for easier access into other areas held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Despite the surrounding area remaining a hotspot of conflict, the dam’s structure has not been attacked for nearly two weeks. Workers have used the brief window of opportunity to repair parts that have been severely damaged by the conflict, a senior dam official told Rudaw English on the condition of anonymity.

“The dam is not in good condition and needs much repair. There is no fear of collapse so far, but the structure has definitely been harmed. We planned to repair the part that transmits electricity [to other areas], but I am not sure if we will succeed,” said the official, fearing renewed attacks on the dam.

He explained that six groups are working at the dam. One group is focused on repairing the electricity, while another is responsible for controlling the water. Some of their computers have stopped working due to bombing and water infiltration.

Syria’s state-owned SANA news agency reported on Saturday that maintenance teams arrived at the key dam to begin repairing the structure for operation.

The dam official said that some workers who live in areas outside Kurdish control have returned to the dam after abandoning it for months due to constant attacks on the structure. He noted that Damascus may have instructed these workers to return to the dam.

“We have not been informed that anyone would be sent [by the central government],” he said, adding that the personnel who returned to the dam had contacted him before making the decision to make sure that their stay would be safe.

Ali Demir, the manager of the dam, has repeatedly warned that a “disaster” could happen if attacks on the structure continue. He also said any huge damage to the dam would pose a threat to the people living downstream, which includes neighboring Iraq.

Convoys of civilians from SDF-held areas have arrived at the dam to form a human shield. Several have been killed while on the way to the dam or during protests. The SDF has blamed Turkey and the militia groups it supports, who call themselves the Syrian National Army (SNA).

The collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime has paved the way for efforts to announce a nationwide ceasefire in Syria.

The SDF said on Sunday that there are local and international efforts for “a ceasefire across all Syrian territories.”

SDF chief Mazloum Abdi and Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa signed a landmark agreement last month that calls for a ceasefire across Syria.

Kurdish officials in northeast Syria have also hinted at talks between them and Ankara to end tensions despite ongoing clashes.

Intra-Kurdish conference to be held
    in Western Kurdistan Friday
Kurdish ruling and opposition parties in Western Kurdistan are set to hold an intra-Kurdish conference on Friday aimed at strengthening unity and addressing long-standing internal disputes concerning their negotiations with Damascus

“Kurdish unity is the key to resolving all our challenges and disputes,” Perwin Yousef, co-chair of Western Kurdistan’s ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD), said in a video statement. “When we are united, we can overcome our issues.”

“The conference will be held on April 18 and gather 300 delegates,” including representatives from all Kurdish parties, national figures, and women’s movements, according to Yousef.

“The most important outcome is for us to unify our stance and demands,” Yousif emphasized.

Western Kurdistan’s political landscape shifted significantly following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December, prompting rival Kurdish coalitions in Western Kurdistan to accelerate unity talks. In January, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani hosted a landmark meeting in Erbil with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) chief Mazloum Abdi to advance the dialogue.

The PYD, the dominant party in Western Kurdistan, has since engaged in negotiations with the Kurdish National Council (ENKS/KNC), an opposition coalition backed by the KDP. Talks have been facilitated by members of the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS), particularly the United States and France.

Since then, Kurdish factions have shown a unified front in rejecting recent moves by the new Syrian leadership in Damascus, including their opposition to the 53-article constitutional declaration and their decision to abstain from participating in the interim government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa.

“Extensive meetings and discussions have taken place to enable us, as Kurdish parties, to secure the rights of the Kurdish people during this sensitive period and to negotiate with Damascus from a position of strength,” Yousif stated, urging all Kurdish parties to put aside partisan agendas in favor of the broader national interest.

In 2015, PYD and ENKS signed a historic agreement mediated by Barzani in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province to reduce tensions and establish a power-sharing arrangement in Western Kurdistan. However, the deal was never implemented, with both sides accusing each other of undermining the process and trading harsh rhetoric, including allegations of betrayal.

Date of Kurdish Unity Conference
    to be Announced Soon
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS) confirmed on Thursday that preparations for the long-anticipated Kurdish-Kurdish Unity Conference are advancing steadily, with an official announcement on the date expected in the coming days

Speaking exclusively to Kurdistan 24, Faisal Yousef, spokesperson for the KNCS, rejected recent reports claiming the conference had been delayed or derailed, affirming that “no official date has yet been announced to claim it has been postponed.” He emphasized that preparations for the intra-Kurdish conference are progressing “with firm and deliberate steps, driven by a tangible will to succeed and convene the meeting as soon as possible.”

Yusuf acknowledged the legitimate concerns within the Kurdish public, which stem from years of faltering initiatives and missed opportunities for unity, but called on all parties to learn from past setbacks and remain focused on achieving a strategic breakthrough.

“We respect and value the opinions of our friends, brothers, and the Kurdish street,” he said. “The KNCS remains fully committed to fulfilling their aspirations. We consider Kurdish unity a strategic choice—an irreversible path toward realizing the hopes of the Kurdish people within a democratic and decentralized Syria.”

Speculation of delays dismissed as parties finalize preparations

Yusuf’s remarks came after reports by Syria TV alleged that disagreements between the KNCS and the Democratic Union Party (PYD), particularly over perceived interference by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), had caused the postponement of the official announcement of the joint Kurdish political vision, which was reportedly set to be unveiled in Qamishlo on Friday.

However, Speculation of Syria tv was dismissed, as Sama Bekdash, a senior official in the PYD, also stated on Wednesday that “the Conference for Declaring the Shared Political Vision will take place after April 18, with the exact date to be announced later.” She confirmed that preparations are ongoing and aimed at ensuring inclusive and effective participation from all Kurdish political forces.

Renewed momentum for Kurdish political alignment

The renewed momentum toward a unified Kurdish position follows a pivotal meeting held on Mar. 18, 2025 in Hasakah between the KNCS and a PYD delegation. The talks were attended by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi and U.S. Special Envoy Scott Bowles, reflecting the high-level regional and international support for Kurdish reconciliation.

According to sources obtained by Kurdistan 24, the meeting was marked by a positive atmosphere and a shared determination to complete the necessary steps toward formalizing a joint Kurdish delegation for talks with Damascus.

SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi affirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that “the perspectives of both sides were met with satisfaction,” calling the meeting “the first step in negotiations aimed at achieving Kurdish unity.”

Political context and constitutional tensions

These developments come against the backdrop of rising political tensions in Syria, particularly in the wake of the government’s controversial constitutional declaration on March 13 and the interim government formation on March 30. The document and the new cabinet have drawn sharp criticism from Kurdish political groups and other minority communities for failing to enshrine genuine pluralism or ensure fair representation.

On March 14, protests erupted in Amuda and other cities in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), as demonstrators condemned the charter’s exclusionary tone and centralist framework. Both the SDF and the KNCS released statements denouncing the declaration, warning that it risks deepening sectarian and ethnic divides across the country.

In his interview with Kurdistan 24, Faisal Yusuf reiterated that both parties had reached a “mutual understanding” on the necessity of forming a joint Kurdish delegation to begin direct negotiations with the Syrian government. He added that the agreement reflects a collective Kurdish demand for recognition of political, cultural, and civil rights within a new, democratic Syrian framework.

As Kurdish factions edge closer to a historic agreement, the success of this initiative could mark a pivotal turning point in the Kurdish political struggle in Syria—one that bridges past divisions and lays the foundation for a unified voice in shaping the country’s future.

Mother Urges SDF to Return Daughter
Kidnapped by PKK-Affiliated Group

A Kurdish mother from Western Kurdistan has made a heartfelt plea to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi to intervene in the case of her 14-year-old daughter, who she says was abducted by the “Revolutionary Youth” group affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Kobani

Zahra, the mother of Farah Muhammad Abdo, appeared in a video statement saying her daughter was kidnapped from her school in Kobani by the group known locally as “Ciwanên Şoreşger.”

“My daughter, who is in the seventh grade, was kidnapped from school, and her fate remains unknown,” she said.

Originally from the village of Kaltam in the Kobani countryside, Zahra explained that due to the lack of a local school, the family had sent Farah to the city for her education.

“Despite our poor financial situation, we rented a house for her in Kobani. But they kidnapped my young daughter to recruit her into the military ranks,” she said tearfully, appealing directly to Mazloum Abdi to secure her daughter’s release.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over the recruitment of underage children in Western Kurdistan by the PKK-affiliated Revolutionary Youth.

Several families have appeared in video statements shared on social media, demanding the return of their children and calling for the group’s activities to be halted
The Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) has also raised alarms over the issue. In a statement to BasNews, ENKS spokesperson Faisal Yousif said, “The majority of this group’s members are not from Western Kurdistan, and their activities extend beyond recruiting underage children to include attacking ENKS-affiliated party headquarters and kidnapping their cadres.”

Yousif confirmed that ENKS had formally requested SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi to end the Revolutionary Youth’s presence in Western Kurdistan.

“Mazloum Abdi himself has expressed dissatisfaction with the group’s activities and stressed that he does not want them to continue,” he added.

The abduction of Farah Muhammad Abdo adds to a growing list of alleged child recruitment cases in the region, raising urgent calls for action from families, civil society, and political groups alike.

Unity Is Essential for an Inclusive Syria

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a significant development for Syrian Kurdish politics, the Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) announced on Tuesday that an agreement has been reached to hold a long-awaited "Conference on Kurdish Unity and Common Position" in the city of Qamishlo on Saturday, April 26, 2025

Described as a critical step toward bolstering intra-Kurdish cooperation, the conference aims to forge a unified political vision among Kurdish factions in Western Kurdistan. According to a statement released by ENKS, the conference is expected to bring together 300 delegates—130 from ENKS, 130 from the Democratic Union Party (PYD), and 40 guests split evenly between both sides. The event is seen as a milestone in the protracted efforts to bridge political divisions and promote a collective national agenda in Syria’s Kurdish-majority regions.

“This is an important step and a political achievement that reflects the aspirations of our Kurdish people in Syria,” ENKS declared, emphasizing that the conference is the product of broad grassroots will and tireless efforts by Kurdish fighters. The statement also highlighted the role of external facilitators, expressing gratitude for “the generous support of brothers and friends, especially His Excellency President Masoud Barzani and brother General Mazloum Abdi.”

Kurdistan24 has learned that the conference will not form standing committees but will instead produce a unified draft that encapsulates the positions and priorities of all major political parties in Western Kurdistan. This draft will serve as a foundational document for future negotiations with a potential Syrian transitional authority.

ENKS voiced optimism that the event would mark a turning point, saying it “hopes this conference will become a turning point towards a new phase of constructive cooperation between the parties of the Kurdish political movement, strengthening trust with the public, and opening wider horizons for solid national relations with all components of the Syrian people.”
The significance of the event lies not only in its symbolism but in its potential to foster concrete dialogue and strategic alignment between rival Kurdish blocs, especially ENKS and PYD—two dominant but often ideologically divergent forces within Syrian Kurdish politics.

For years, Kurdish unity in Syria has remained an elusive goal amid regional complexities and competing international influences. However, growing instability in Syria and increasing calls for inclusive governance have added urgency to unification efforts. ENKS reiterated that “Kurdish unity and common position is an urgent national necessity and a fundamental step towards achieving real partnership in shaping the future of a democratic and inclusive Syria that includes all components and nationalities.”

The upcoming conference is therefore not merely an internal Kurdish affair, but a potential blueprint for political cooperation and national participation in a post-conflict Syria. The outcomes of the gathering in Qamishlo could set the tone for how Kurds contribute to—and are represented in—the broader Syrian peace and reconstruction process.

ENKS Slams PYD Fuel Hike

The Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) on Monday strongly condemned the Democratic Union Party (PYD) for unilaterally increasing fuel prices in Western Kurdistan, calling the move a “blatant disregard” for the suffering of local residents and warning of severe economic repercussions

According to a statement obtained by BasNews, the ENKS criticized the PYD-affiliated Autonomous Administration for raising the price of gasoil and gasoline to 6,200 Syrian pounds per liter (approximately 55 US cents), up from a previous range of 30 to 40 cents.

The Council accused the administration of making the decision without any prior announcement or official decree, describing it as an attempt to evade accountability.

"This decision comes at a time when the people of Syrian Kurdistan are already enduring tragic living conditions—rising prices, shortages of basic goods like electricity, bread, and water, along with rampant unemployment and lack of job opportunities," the statement said.

The ENKS warned that the fuel price hike would have catastrophic consequences for the already fragile agricultural sector, particularly impacting wheat production, a key element of food security in the region and Syria as a whole
“Gasoil is vital for running irrigation pumps on what little productive land remains. This move directly threatens the strategic wheat crop,” the Council noted.

The decision has also led to increases in the prices of essential goods and services, including food, bread, transport, medicine, and electricity—further compounding the burden on citizens.

Rejecting the fuel hike, the Kurdish National Council demanded its immediate reversal and held the PYD fully responsible for the social and economic fallout.

“We reaffirm our commitment to any effort that serves the Kurdish cause and a shared political vision, but we categorically reject decisions that harm our people and worsen their suffering,” the ENKS stated.

The Council further accused the PYD of failing to establish stability in the region, citing its unilateral policies, lack of transparency, and self-serving governance as drivers of deepening crises, poverty, migration, and displacement
“We will continue to oppose these policies through all peaceful and legal means to defend the rights and interests of our people in every forum,” the statement concluded.

April 26 to Mark Historic Turning Point

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Faisal Yusuf, spokesperson for the Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria, described April 26, 2025, as a “historic milestone in Kurdish collective memory,” announcing that Dr. Hamid Darbandi, the official envoy of President Masoud Barzani, will attend the conference on behalf of Erbil’s Kurdish leadership

Speaking via his official Facebook page on Friday, Yusuf underscored the event’s significance as “the culmination of a long and arduous struggle for national partnership and united Kurdish positioning in the future of democratic Syria.” The conference, to be held in Qamishlo, aims to consolidate unity among various Kurdish political factions in Western Kurdistan.

Barzani’s Envoy to Attend Kurdish Unity Conference

Yusuf confirmed that Dr. Hamid Darbandi, the official envoy of President Masoud Barzani, will participate in the conference on behalf of the Kurdistan Region leadership. “His presence conveys strong symbolic support for Kurdish unity,” Yusuf said, emphasizing the moral and political weight of the Kurdistan Region’s endorsement.

He further praised the “constructive” role played by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander General Mazloum Abdi in laying the groundwork for the event. “His efforts to bridge gaps and facilitate convergence among Kurdish voices should not be overlooked,” Yusuf stressed.

A Vision for a Unified Democratic Syria

Describing the event as a critical moment in Kurdish history, Yusuf asserted, “April 26 could be the beginning of national consolidation for the Kurds—toward the foundation of a democratic Syria that belongs to all.”

He called on all political factions to “rise to the occasion” and make the conference a launchpad for inclusive Kurdish representation and sustainable national policy.

Turkish-Kurdish Delegation Receives Warm Welcome in Western Kurdistan

Meanwhile, a senior Kurdish delegation from Northern Kurdistan, comprising representatives from the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM party) and the Democratic Regions Party (DBP). Among them were Keskin Bayındır (co-chair of DBP), Serhat Aran (member of the DEM party), and parliamentarians Salha Aydinız, Gülcan Kaçmaz, and Mehmet Kamatç.

The delegation visited the Department of Foreign Relations in Western Kurdistan, where they were received by Ilham Ahmed and other senior officials. The visitors expressed strong support for the upcoming conference and affirmed their commitment to Kurdish unity across all parts of Kurdistan
Keskin Bayındır emphasized the symbolic and political importance of the April 26 conference, calling it “a message of hope to all Kurds” and a possible “foundational step toward national unity and collective determination.”

As momentum builds toward the conference in Qamishlo, the convergence of Kurdish voices—from Western Kurdistan, Southern Kurdistan, and Northern Kurdistan—underscores growing demands for a unified political stance amid a complex regional landscape. With international and regional backing, the April 26 event could mark a pivotal moment in the quest for Kurdish cohesion and democratic participation in Syria

President Barzani's Support
Pivotal to Kurdish Unification

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – As the Kurdish National Unity and Solidarity Conference convenes today, in Qamishlo, senior Kurdish leaders are emphasizing the historic significance of the gathering, with special acknowledgment of President Masoud Barzani’s decisive support for Kurdish unity

President Barzani's Enduring Commitment to Kurdish Solidarity

Speaking to Kurdistan 24, Mohammad Ismail, the Head of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS), underscored the critical role played by President Barzani in championing Kurdish unity and coherence. “President Barzani’s commitment to Kurdish national causes has earned deep respect, not only among Kurdish political forces but also within international circles,” Ismail stated.

He affirmed that President Barzani’s vision and leadership are widely regarded as foundational pillars for advancing Kurdish cohesion. "His unwavering support and proactive efforts have paved the way for today’s conference, offering a strong moral and political backing for the Kurdish people," he added.

Ismail noted that the presence of Dr. Hamid Darbandi, President Barzani’s envoy, at the conference is a tangible manifestation of Barzani’s commitment to fostering Kurdish unity at this crucial juncture. "The envoy’s participation reiterates the importance President Barzani places on building a collective Kurdish front," Ismail said.

A Historic Day for Kurds Across the Parts of Kurdistan

Describing today as a “historic day” for Kurds across all parts of Kurdistan, Ismail remarked that the Kurdish National Unity and Solidarity Conference in Qamishlo is not merely a gathering but a milestone for collective Kurdish aspirations. "This event represents a major step towards consolidating Kurdish unity and strengthening national identity," he asserted.

Regarding the political future of Syria, Ismail confirmed that Kurdish parties are determined to form a unified delegation to engage in negotiations with the future Syrian government. “Our goal is to secure the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people within a democratic, federal framework for Syria,” he emphasized.

Broad Participation Across Western Kurdistan and Beyond

The conference, held under the patronage of President Barzani and with international support, has drawn the participation of nearly 50 Kurdish political parties, along with approximately 400 dignitaries from Western Kurdistan, Northern Kurdistan, and Kurdish figures from Aleppo, Damascus, Azaz, Hama, and al-Bab.

The objective of the conference is clear: to reaffirm Kurdish unity and to establish a joint Kurdish delegation capable of effectively representing Kurdish demands in negotiations over Syria’s future governance
Over the past months, preparations for the conference included consultations between the Kurdish National Council in Syria, the Autonomous Administration of Western Kurdistan, and Mazloum Abdi the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander, ensuring broad Kurdish representation and consensus.

An Ambitious Step Towards National Cohesion

Dr. Hamid Darbandi, who arrived in Western Kurdistan recently, stressed the significance of the Kurdish unity conference during his meetings with Kurdish leaders. "The unity and solidarity of the Kurdish people are essential to building a democratic Syria where the rights of all peoples are safeguarded," he noted.

Today’s conference is expected to mark the beginning of a new phase for Kurdish national unity efforts, aiming to establish a foundation for a cohesive and inclusive Kurdish political front at a critical moment in Syrian history.
