Trump slams WSJ report on easing
Ukraine arms curbs as 'fake news'

The WSJ has reported that Trump lifted key restrictions on Ukraine using Storm Shadow missiles in Russia strikes, enabling long-range cross-border attacks

US President Donald Trump slammed a Wall Street Journal report on Washington easing restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range Western arms as "fake news"
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, that Donald Trump's administration lifted a significant restriction on Ukraine using some long-range missiles in strikes on Russia, increasing pressure on Moscow.

"The Wall Street Journal story on the U.S.A.’s approval of Ukraine being allowed to use long range missiles deep into Russia is FAKE NEWS!" Trump said in a Truth Social post
"The U.S. has nothing to do with those missiles, wherever they may come from, or what Ukraine does with them!" he added.

However, based on an announcement from the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces on social media, Ukraine used a British-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missile on Tuesday to strike a Russian plant in Bryansk that produced explosives and rocket fuel, a strike it called a “successful hit".

The unannounced US move to enable Kiev to use the missile in Russia was, according to the WSJ, recently transferred from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon to the top US general in Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who also serves as NATO commander.

The shift coincided with an early October push by President Trump to pressure the Kremlin into talks to end the war, a strategy that included the possibility of approving US-made Tomahawk missiles for Kiev, though Trump has since backed off from that proposal.

Ukraine expected to use Storm Shadow in more attacks

The WSJ's report conveyed US officials' expectation that Ukraine would conduct more cross-border attacks using the Storm Shadow missile, which is launched from Ukrainian aircraft and can travel more than 180 miles, a capability the US can restrict because the missiles rely on American targeting data.

While Ukraine’s renewed use of Storm Shadows isn’t a game-changer on the battlefield, having a far shorter range than US Tomahawks and having been used to strike targets in Russia before, the missiles do enable Kiev to expand its attacks inside Russia, the WSJ continued.

“This is a war that never would have happened had President Trump been President, something President Putin himself acknowledged, and President Trump is trying to get it stopped. The President also negotiated a historic agreement to allow NATO allies to purchase American-made weapons," one US official stated, as quoted by the WSJ.
Former President Joe Biden approved Ukraine's use of Storm Shadow and US ATACMS missiles against Russian targets toward the end of his administration. After Trump took office, the Pentagon established a review procedure for approving cross-border strikes that use US missiles or other weapons, including the Storm Shadow, which rely on US targeting data.

Under a mechanism that gave the defense secretary final say over whether Ukraine could employ Western long-range weapons to strike Russia, no attacks were approved until recently, when the authority for approving such attacks was returned to European Command, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing two US officials.

Russia envoy says Russia, US, Ukraine
near diplomatic breakthrough

Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy for investment and economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev, said Friday that Moscow, Washington, and Kiev are "quite close to a diplomatic solution" to the war in Ukraine, signaling cautious optimism even as the broader peace process faces new setbacks

Speaking to CNN after arriving in Washington for talks with US officials, Dmitriev insisted that the planned summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin "had not been cancelled," contrary to the US president's statement earlier in the week. He said the meeting would "likely take place at a later date."

Budapest delay

Trump had announced that he was postponing the Budapest summit, citing Russia's rejection of an immediate ceasefire and the lack of a favorable environment for diplomacy. The announcement came just days after his contentious White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which AFP reported that Trump urged Zelensky to give up the Donbass region in exchange for peace, a proposal that provoked sharp backlash from European allies.

"I believe Russia and the US and Ukraine are actually quite close to a diplomatic solution," Dmitriev said, without detailing the terms under discussion. His remarks echoed growing speculation among European diplomats, who told Reuters that a new ceasefire proposal based on current battle lines was being developed in coordination with Kiev.

Dmitriev described this as a pragmatic shift from President Zelensky, noting, "It's a big move by President Zelensky to already acknowledge that it's about battle lines. You know, his previous position was that Russia should leave completely, so actually, I think we are reasonably close to a diplomatic solution that can be worked out."

Diplomacy amid sanctions

The envoy's visit coincides with fresh US sanctions targeting Rosneft and Lukoil, Russia's largest oil companies, a move that also prompted Putin to warn that the summit in Hungary may be delayed and that sanctions could raise global fuel prices. Dmitriev downplayed the measures, arguing they would "only lead to gasoline costing more at American gas stations." He added that continued dialogue "is certainly only possible if Russia's interests are taken into account and treated with respect."

European leaders, including France's Emmanuel Macron and Britain's Keir Starmer, have publicly rejected any peace deal involving territorial concessions, maintaining that "only Ukraine can decide its territorial future."

Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that a meeting between Trump and Putin "is not completely off the table," emphasizing Washington's openness to continued talks.

According to Axios, Dmitriev is also expected to meet Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami, while Russia's TASS agency reported that he would hold further undisclosed discussions.

Suppression of local governance
official lies about Ukraine’s military

Zelensky cancels elections as mandates expire, tightening control under martial law amid war, mass desertions, and rising dissent over government lies and Ukraine’s worsening battlefield losses

At the end of October 2025, the last branches of elected government in Ukraine will see their mandates expire.

Following instructions from Kiev regime dictator Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian legislature canceled planned elections to take place in late October for mayors and municipal councils. Zelensky’s own five-year electoral mandate and that of Ukraine’s national legislature (Verkhovna Rada) both expired in April 2024

Ukrainian authorities are placing all responsibility for the election cancellations on Russia, saying a “continuity of power” is needed for the country and that ongoing “Russian aggression” is preventing that from happening. Of note is that no electoral disruptions are taking place in the Russian Federation, even in the ‘new regions’ (as they are called in Russia) of Kherson and Zaporizhzhya, where intense fighting continues
Ukraine is thus setting quite an example of ‘democracy’ for the world to view and for its Western backers to justify. For decades prior, the dictatorships that Western countries supported in Latin America, Africa, and Asia were also typically canceled when it suited the West, often justified by a claimed ‘red threat’emanating from the resistance to imperialism by the Soviet countries.

As Odessa anarchist Vyacheslav Azarov wrote ironically on Telegram on October 8, the formula ‘while we fight for democracy, there will be no democracy’ means that Ukrainians are to be stuck for years to come with an irremovable government devoid of any electoral mandate.

Ukraine’s leaders want nothing to do with any decentralization of powers

Ukraine legislator Alexander Dubinsky, a former party colleague of Zelensky who has been imprisoned since November 2023, awaiting trial for ‘treason’, wrote from prison on October 8 that the electoral mandates of local authorities will expire at the end of October, and it is impossible to extend them by fiat. (Dubinsky’s trial was finally convened in Kiev on October 15 and then postponed until November 12. He stands accused of “information-subversive activities in favor of Russia”.)

Provisions for extensions or alterations of electoral mandates appear nowhere in the Ukrainian constitution, yet Zelensky has been stripping local governments of their powers throughout his term in office. A number of elected mayors and elected local deputies have been removed from office under various pretexts, most often through the use of sanctions and presidential decrees. The reasons for sanctions and decrees are usually not disclosed, under the pretext of ‘guarding military secrecy.’
Local government reform (so-called decentralization) was one of the European Union's pet initiatives for Ukraine, going back to the ‘Euromaidan’ protest movement of late 2013/early 2014. The protest movement waged street battles in Kiev in favor of a rupture in economic ties to Russia, to be replaced by a subordinate economic status with the European Union. Ever since, ‘decentralization’ has been financed and promoted by the EU and its largest, affiliated governments.

European officials claimed at the time and since that excess centralization of power in Ukraine caused the dissatisfaction behind the ‘Euromaidan’ rebellion and led to the coup in Kiev on February 20/21, 2014, that deposed Ukraine’s elected president and legislature. It is highly ironic that anti-coup protests arose immediately in central and eastern Ukraine, precisely in favor of decentralization of political power in the country (autonomy) for regions seeking it. (Crimeans voted outright on March 15, 2014, to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation because years of bitter experience in struggling for political autonomy (‘decentralization’) had taught them that peaceful decentralization of powers would forever be fiercely opposed by Ukraine’s post-Soviet leaders
Notwithstanding the Western concerns over ‘excessive centralization’ of government in Ukraine, all tax revenues in the country continue to accrue to Kiev, where any expenditures of the same are decided. This has left virtually nothing to pay for regional and local infrastructure and services. ‘Decentralization reform’ was, indeed, eventually adopted, after a fashion, but was then canceled by Zelensky’s 2022 declaration of martial law. Martial law has allowed his regime to double down on its financial plundering of Ukraine’s regions in favor of power concentration in Kiev.

More than four months ago, on June 8, the executive director of the Association of Ukrainian Cities, Alexander Slobozhan, reported on Telegram that 297 communities in Ukraine were without elected mayors. He said there have been systematic efforts since 2020 to weaken local government authority and surrender to centralized power.

Slobozhan also points to the absence of clear lines of demarcation between military and civilian (i.e. elected) powers in Ukraine. He reminded his readers back then that the European Commission had warned Ukrainian authorities that there would be no admission of the country into membership of the European Union until a clear delineation between such powers was agreed and implemented.

Confrontation between Kiev and elected officials in Odessa

In mid-October, Zelensky stripped the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, of his citizenship and removed him from office. According to Zelensky, Trukhanov ‘may have’ possessed a Russian passport, making him ineligible for office. Photos of the passport as published by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) indicate that it is fake, including that his first name (Gennady) is misspelled. Odessa is the third largest city in Ukraine and its largest port.

The Russian opposition publication Insider (published in Latvia) has reported that the number listed on the passport as published by the SBU does exist but belongs to a woman named Tatyana, a Russian citizen who uses it for travel.

For the central government, suppressing regional elites is not just a fight against potential competitors for office. First and foremost, it is a struggle over dwindling financial flows, including income from smuggling (for which the port of Odessa is infamous). Until now, local authorities have effectively been bribing the President's Office by transferring sums from local budgets to the central government in excess of legal taxation requirements.

The online publication Strana in Ukraine writes on Telegram on October 14 that American advisors have long been urging that Trukhanov be removed from the post of mayor because they consider him to be linked to organized crime. For his part, Trukhanov has positioned himself as an “important element” of stability for Ukrainian rule in the Odessa region, where pro-Russian sentiments remain strong.

Former head of the Housing Union of Ukraine, Alexander Skubchenko (now living in exile), connects the purge of local government in Odessa with British government plans for the region. He wrote on October 14: “No more local self-government in Odessa; the Brits are taking full control. As you might guess, this has nothing to do with the city's budgets or the monument to Alexander Pushkin continuing to stand [ultra-nationalists in Ukraine want the prominent statue of the famous Russian poet in the center of the city removed and destroyed]. Instead, it looks like the Brits are preparing for the complete isolation of Transnistria [the region of Moldova that seceded in 1990-91 to remain close to Russia, population 360,000] and for a new war in the region.”

Mayor Trukhanov says he intends to continue performing his duties as mayor until the city council terminates his powers, but Zelensky has appointed a military officer to the position of city head. Thus, a system of ‘dual power’ has effectively emerged there.

The blatant lies and fake news that Zelensky's team is offering up, including to justify suppression of local self-government, are echoed in the total falsehoods it promotes about the military situation on the front lines. Zelensky traditionally feeds Western sponsors fairy tales that he can defeat Russia if only his regime is given more money and weapons. This is being echoed by lobbyists for the Western military-industrial complex.

Regime lies to cover up the deteriorating military situation

Ukrainian military personnel and deputies have recently been particularly outraged by the lies of the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and of Zelensky and his office. The two continue to stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the realities of the military situation. Ukrainian military officer and former legislator Ihor Lutsenko, a former legislator and now commander of a UAV (drone) company in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, wrote a resonating comment on October 8, stating that total lies prevail at all levels of the governing regime in Kiev.

"Commanders at various levels are lying. Platoon commanders are lying, company commanders are lying, battalion commanders are lying, brigade commanders are lying. The lies vary in their level and degree of harmfulness,” Lutsenko wrote indignantly. He claims that territories now firmly held by the Russian military continue to be referred to by the Kiev regime as being held by Ukraine. Continued losses of territories to Russia are only reported when all possibilities of recapturing them have been exhausted
Lutsenko also claims that authorities lie about the numbers of ‘missing in action’, counting soldiers known to be dead as ‘missing’, and they lie about the availability of ammunition and equipment, and the readiness for combat of UAF personnel.

Legislator Maryana Bezuhla of Zelensky's party/machine is also outraged by the lies at all levels, including those uttered by Zelensky. She does not understand who these lies are aimed at, since the Russian and American militaries rely on their own data, not on suspect figures issued by Zelensky’s regime. "Why lie? Why these lies about the situation on the front lines, spread by the president, by Commander-In-Chief Alexander Syrsky, by the General Staff of the armed forces, and by hand-picked spokespeople? Who are the lies aimed at? The Americans have their own accurate analysis. The Russians even more so, as evidenced, unfortunately, by the fact that they consistently achieve their goals. Why are Ukrainian leaders lying to their own population why?", Bezuhla asks.

The reality, as reported recently by the publication Ukrainska Pravda, is that the lines of defense of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are porous due to a lack of personnel. The publication reports that the distance between neighboring units of the UAF along the front lines can be 200 to 300 meters, or 500 to 700. Sometimes, they are as much as one kilometer apart.

“Within the front lines, these are huge distances through which enemy infantry passes,” the publication summarizes. “A more accurate term would be ‘gaps’”, it continues. An officer from one of the brigades in the Pokrovsk district of Donbas region tells journalists at Ukrainska Pravda that some positions are occupied exclusively by shell-shocked and wounded Ukrainian soldiers, who are there only so that their superiors “can content themselves in believing that we still hold such positions there”.

In some cases, according to the Ukrainian military, Russians are “seeping through” Ukrainian lines and directly reaching the positions of drone operators, mortar gunners, and artillerymen, who are typically stationed several kilometers behind a front line.

Desertions continue

One of the most discussed topics in the Ukrainian media of late has been the growing number of deserters from the armed forces, which is cited as the main reason for the formation of gaps on the front line. The Ukrainian army is disintegrating faster than recruiters can fill the ranks, notwithstanding all the coercion and violence being used to round up and conscript male Ukrainians older than 25.

The aforementioned legislator, Mariana Bezuhla, claims there are as many deserters today from the Ukrainian army, at 250,000, as there were in the entire army at the outset of the Russian military intervention in February 2022, some 250,000.

In a comment to the publication Ukrainska Pravda published on October 14, a Ukrainian officer complains that it is not only new recruits who are now deserting, but also and often military personnel with combat experience. “We officially have almost 300,000 deserters. They are trained, and many have combat experience. This is a ready-made army that does not fight but walks away, knowing that they are unlikely to be imprisoned or face other forms of punishment.”

Ukrainian military lawyer Nazar Oleksyuk claims that the number of deserters is much higher than the official figures. According to him, units often do not submit the results of official investigations to the State Bureau of Investigation, saying many commanders have no incentive to report on desertion and absenteeism. Many commanders are known to send their subordinates home in exchange for their bank cards, from which monthly ‘service’ payments are deducted. Some of the absentees are even reported to have ‘carried out’ combat missions… in order for their commanders to earn bonuses.

Ihor Lutsenko said that in September alone, he tallied about 20,000 cases of desertion. In reality, he said, the numbers are even higher. Earlier, legislator Roman Kostenko counted 16,000-19,000 people each month choosing life and saying goodbye to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In early October, the President of the Russian Federation announced that from January to August, about 150,000 people had deserted from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Two weeks later, many Ukrainian legislators and journalists had confirmed these figures in their own words.

Due to the increase in desertions and the number of gaps on the front line, Ukrainian political and military officials are once again talking about lowering the age of military conscription from 25. But Oleg Petrenko, chairman of the Third Army Corps Staff Fund, recently told a radio interview that in that case, the number of deserters will only increase. “What is the point of mobilizing another two million? In a week, 1.8 million of them will desert. We already have hundreds of thousands of deserters. What next? Put them all in prison? We don't have enough prison space to hold them all,” Petrenko said.

In this situation, it is critically important for Zelensky and his lobbyists in the West to keep the U.S. government deeply engaged in the conflict. They worry and complain about Donald Trump being ‘distracted’ as he stirs up new conflicts in Venezuela, the Middle East, and Asia. Strana reported on October 15 that Zelensky's main task now is to “turn Biden's war into Trump's war”.

“The idea that Ukraine would benefit from an escalation in relations between Russia and the West, and even a direct military confrontation between them, is already being ‘pumped up’ by some Ukrainian publicists,” Strana wrote.

It would seem that Zelensky is partly succeeding in this task. On the eve of Zelensky's latest visit to Washington on October 17, the U.S. president stated that he expects Ukraine was going to go on the offensive and “we’ll make a determination on that”.

Trump's words once again emphasize that Ukraine's ‘independence’ is today a fiction. It turns out that the fate of Ukraine and the fate of thousands of Ukrainians who may die should a new offensive be attempted depend entirely on the whims of a U.S. president.

Hungary plans anti-Ukraine bloc
with Czechia, Slovakia

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban is working to form a Ukraine-skeptic alliance with Czechia’s Andrej Babis and Slovakia’s Robert Fico, potentially challenging EU efforts to support Ukraine militarily and financially

Hungary is pushing to form a Ukraine-skeptic alliance within the European Union, seeking alignment with Czechia and Slovakia ahead of key European summits, according to a senior political adviser to Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

A report by POLITICO stated on Tuesday that the plan aims to unite Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Czech politician Andrej Babis, and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to coordinate positions on Ukraine-related policies and potentially hold joint strategy sessions before European Council meetings.

Though still informal, the emerging alliance could pose a challenge to EU efforts to keep funding Ukraine militarily and financially, particularly as divisions among member states are growing more visible.

Balazs Orban, the Hungarian premier’s political director, told POLITICO that he believes a coordinated bloc "will come" and "be more and more visible." He likened the effort to the previous coordination among Visegrad countries during the EU migration crisis, when Hungary, Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia jointly opposed migrant relocation schemes.

According to the POLITICO report, both Fico and Babis have echoed Orban’s skepticism of the EU’s Ukraine policy, calling for dialogue with Moscow, rather than intensified sanctions or military aid. In particular, Babis has faced criticism for allegedly being too close to Orban, with Czech officials warning he could serve as Hungary’s proxy in Brussels.

Visegrad 4 split and new political landscape

The original Visegrad 4 alliance fractured following the war in Ukraine. Poland adopted a strongly pro-Ukraine stance, distancing itself from Hungary’s opposition to sanctions on Russia and military aid to Kiev.

While Orban’s vision for a renewed bloc excludes Poland, now led by pro-Ukraine Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the emerging Visegrad 3 would include Hungary, Slovakia, and potentially Czechia, should Babis form a government after his party's electoral win. But neither Fico nor Babis has formally signed Orban’s plans; shared positions on Ukraine indicate growing convergence, with future cooperation in the European Council under discussion.

According to POLITICO, beyond the European Council, Hungary is also broadening its alliances in the European Parliament. According to the report, Orban’s ruling Fidesz party, now part of the far-right Patriots for Europe group, is exploring cooperation with the European Conservatives and Reformists, Europe of Sovereign Nations, and even certain leftist factions, according to Balazs Orban.

He suggested that discontent with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen could eventually lead to a shift away from the centrist majority that supported her reelection.

"We are looking for partners, allies on every topic," he said, highlighting Hungary’s growing think tank presence in Brussels, led by the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, which has transatlantic ties and receives significant funding from Orban’s political allies.

Ukrainian conscription crisis sees
100,000 youth flee in 2 months

Nearly 100,000 young men have fled Ukraine in just two months after Kiev eased movement restrictions under martial law in an effort to address its ongoing conscription crisis, according to reports by Politico Europe and The Telegraph

Citing data from the Polish Border Guard, the outlets revealed that 98,500 Ukrainian males aged between 18 and 22 crossed the border in September and October. This marks a dramatic increase compared to the 45,300 who left between January and the end of August.

In a bid to prevent parents from sending their teenage sons abroad and to allow returnees to avoid prosecution, Kiev lifted the travel ban on men under the age of 23. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko stated that the policy was intended to help citizens abroad “maintain ties with Ukraine.”

Conscription measures spark public outrage

The easing of restrictions comes as Ukrainian authorities struggle to replenish army ranks amid a grinding military campaign and reports of increasing battlefield casualties.

Kiev's mobilization efforts have triggered growing discontent, with viral videos on social media showing military officers forcibly detaining conscription-age men in the streets and pushing them into vans. The controversial tactics have sparked protests and fueled public anger over the state of the military draft system.

Ukrainian military officials have voiced concern over troop shortages, warning that a lack of personnel is allowing Russian forces to breach fortified positions along the front. Despite continuous mobilization efforts, commanders report that fresh reinforcements are not arriving fast enough to replace battlefield losses.

The situation has led to a weakening of Ukraine’s defensive lines, further complicating military operations as Russian forces reportedly gain ground in several sectors.

Fatal attempts to flee highlight national crisis

Since the start of martial law in 2022, the desperation to avoid conscription has driven many men to take dangerous routes out of the country. According to Ukraine’s Border Guard Service, around 50 men have drowned while attempting to cross the Tisza River into Romania.

These fatal incidents underscore the severe social and humanitarian toll of Ukraine’s ongoing military draft and the widespread desire among many young men to evade frontline service.

In the face of this conscription crisis, the Ukrainian armed forces have taken measures to try and lure young people to join the national army by offering attractive financial benefits such as a generous salary, large bonuses, and an interest-free home loan.

Jeffrey Sachs:
Understanding the Ukraine conflict

A mini-documentary on the background of the Ukraine conflict follows Jeffrey Sachs’ lecture at the Cambridge Union.

The journey begins in the early 1990s and continues to the present day. The documentary features interviews and statements from world leaders along the way, shedding light on significant historical geopolitical events and questioning the narrative created by Western media. What is true and what is not—that decision is left to the viewer.

However, the most important thing is not who is right but that there are understandable explanations for everything that has happened, and that these events are merely the result of a chain reaction of numerous events, the consequences of which we are now witnessing.

Jeffrey David Sachs is an American economist and public policy analyst who is a professor at Columbia University, where he was former director of The Earth Institute. He worked on the topics of sustainable development and economic development.

Ukraine war threatens dollar stability

Analysts warn that the prolonged Ukraine conflict is accelerating global de-dollarization, as rising fiscal deficits, sanctions use, and geopolitical fragmentation weaken confidence in the US dollar's reserve status and push more countries toward alternative currencies

Ending the conflict in Ukraine has become not only a geopolitical concern but also an economic necessity for Washington, as the prolonged war threatens the US dollar's role as the world's primary reserve currency, according to The Independent.

A source close to President Donald Trump's administration told the newspaper that resolving the crisis is now viewed as essential to safeguarding the dollar's global standing
"The point is that ending the war now is an economic imperative for the US based on trade. Added to that, it cannot put the dollar's status at risk," the source said, referring to a report recently submitted to the White House by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity.

The study warned that the continuation of the conflict and the resulting geopolitical fragmentation could accelerate global de-dollarization and weaken confidence in US financial instruments.

The source described the report as "a very significant piece of work," adding that it would likely influence the administration's thinking on future policy decisions regarding Ukraine.

According to the Federal Reserve's 2025 report on the international role of the US dollar, the currency's share of global foreign exchange reserves has fallen to about 58%, down from roughly 72% in 2001.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) noted that while part of this shift reflects exchange-rate changes, the broader trend indicates a steady diversification among central banks away from dollar holdings.

Dollar Decline

At the same time, analysts warn that the administration's push for a weaker dollar could further erode global confidence. In a recent Forbes article, William Pesek argued that Trump's pursuit of a lower dollar exchange rate, promoted during his Asia tour, risks undermining the very financial foundation that gives the US global influence. Pesek drew parallels with Japan's decades-long stagnation, where currency devaluation replaced structural reform, resulting in diminished competitiveness and long-term economic malaise.

"While Trump aims to boost exports, he risks destabilizing the very financial foundation that gives the US global influence," Pesek wrote, warning that deliberate dollar devaluation could shake investor confidence in US assets and Treasury markets.

The Forbes report echoed broader warnings by institutions such as the Atlantic Council and Chatham House, which argue that Washington's fiscal deficits, reliance on sanctions, and policy volatility have already weakened trust in the dollar's neutrality as a reserve asset. Trump's open criticism of the Federal Reserve and its chair, Jerome Powell, has compounded these concerns, with markets viewing such rhetoric as an attack on the independence of the very institution that safeguards the dollar.

Despite the currency's continued dominance, experts caution that its long-term supremacy is no longer guaranteed. The cumulative effects of sanctions, geopolitical fragmentation, and soaring US debt could gradually undermine the dollar's foundation.

For the Trump administration, these warnings underscore the urgency of preventing further instability linked to the Ukraine war. As the source noted, the longer the conflict continues, the greater the risk that Russia- and China-aligned economic blocs will accelerate efforts to bypass the dollar-dominated system, reshaping the world economy in ways detrimental to US interests.

EU bloc opposing support for Ukraine

Slovakia may join Hungary in forming an EU bloc opposing further Ukraine support, as officials criticize the West’s anti-Russia stance

Slovakia might support Hungary's proposal for forming an EU bloc that would oppose the continued support for Ukraine, according to Luboš Blaha, the deputy chairman of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer Party.

Fico previously warned that Europe's "anti-Russia military hysteria" could lead the world into ruin, stating that Russia cannot be defeated without triggering a nuclear war.

In an interview for Izvestia on Saturday, Blaha stated that "joint actions by those who still have a sound mind in Europe are not only possible, but also probable" and argued that the continent is "once again… gripped by a collective madness that is leading us all to war, decline and chaos."

These remarks from Blaha follow earlier comments made this week by a senior advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who told Politico that Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic could coordinate their positions ahead of EU Council meetings, saying that a “Ukraine-skeptic alliance will come and be more and more visible.”

Hungary, Slovakia dissent against anti-Russian European policies

Both Hungary and Slovakia have refused to provide military aid to Kiev’s regime while urging peace talks instead and maintaining ties with Moscow. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic may join this emerging bloc, since former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s ANO party, which won last month’s parliamentary elections, has expressed similar views.

Blaha, whose party is part of Slovakia’s ruling coalition, accused Brussels of pursuing policies that are harmful and run counter to European interests, stating that Bratislava, Budapest, and Prague have a necessity to defend themselves collectively.

Commenting on the idea of a Slovak-Hungarian-Czech alliance, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow would welcome any sensible initiative aimed at a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict, especially in light of what she described as the West's prevailing Russophobia.

Slovakia, Hungary confront the EU over Ukraine

Slovakia has shifted sharply away from European support for Ukraine, with Prime Minister Robert Fico announcing on March 1, 2025, that the country will halt both military and financial aid to Kiev. Bratislava stressed that EU sanctions on Russia and ongoing support for Ukraine were imposing heavy economic and energy burdens on Central Europe, calling instead for a reassessment of Europe’s energy and economic priorities
Hungary has similarly taken a confrontational stance within the EU. Budapest blocked proposals to use frozen Russian assets to fund military aid for Ukraine, signaling its opposition to EU-backed military assistance and asserting that Hungarian national interests, particularly energy security, must take precedence. Hungary’s veto-style actions have complicated EU plans to accelerate financial and military support for Kiev.

Earlier, in July 2024, Hungary formally proposed that the EU pursue direct negotiations with Russia to secure a ceasefire, bypassing the bloc’s coordinated approach. The European Council rejected this initiative, affirming that Hungary could not represent the Union internationally. Together, these events show Hungary and Slovakia acting as obstacles to a unified European position on Ukraine, emphasizing national sovereignty and pragmatic engagement with Moscow over collective EU policy.

Nord Stream sabotage probe fractures
European unity over Ukraine: WSJ

A Wall Street Journal exclusive reveals that German investigators have traced the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage to a Ukrainian special unit, deepening tensions with Kiev and straining Berlin’s support

An exclusive The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report has revealed that German federal police investigators have concluded a three-year operation tracing the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline bombing to an elite Ukrainian military unit. The findings, supported by prosecutors and other security officials familiar with the case, risk straining Ukraine's relationship with Germany, one of Kiev's closest wartime allies.

The Nord Stream pipelines, which ran under the Baltic Sea and supplied Russian gas to Europe, were sabotaged in September 2022. In the wake of the explosions, which unleashed massive carbon emissions equivalent to Denmark’s annual output, speculation swirled about who was responsible. With early accusations laying the blame on Russia.

But according to the WSJ, German investigators say the evidence now points to a covert Ukrainian operation allegedly authorized by General Valeriy Zaluzhniy, Ukraine’s then-top military commander.

Warsaw and Rome resist extradition as suspects traced

The investigation, which was led from a whiteboard-filled room in Potsdam, near Berlin, has already led to arrest warrants for seven individuals, including three Ukrainian soldiers and four experienced deep-sea divers. Polish authorities, however, have refused to extradite one key suspect, instead celebrating him as a hero who disrupted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s access to gas revenue.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk dismissed the probe, saying, "The problem isn’t that the pipeline was blown up. The problem is that it was built."

In a separate development, Italian police arrested another suspect, identified as Serhii K., a 46-year-old former SBU officer who led a special-forces unit during the early days of the war. His extradition to Germany is pending a court decision expected in December.

German detectives pieced together the sabotage plot using rental records, phone data, vehicle license plates, and even toll systems across European borders. Crucially, The Wall Street Journal reports that a grainy photo from a speed trap helped identify a Ukrainian diver, whose online profiles connected him to other operatives.

In another twist, one suspect was traced to Poland but was swiftly escorted to Ukraine in a black BMW with diplomatic plates, reportedly by the Ukrainian military attaché in Warsaw. A senior Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously to the Journal, said Kiev intervened after a warning from Polish authorities.

The team’s breakthrough came after they guessed the Ukrainian suspect might be vacationing outside the EU. A non-EU country’s border force later flagged his real passport via a "silent alert." Using toll data and hotel bookings under his wife’s name, the German team tracked him to San Clemente, Italy, where local police arrested him at a resort.

Berlin-Kiev relations face new strain ahead of trial

Germany has already readied a plane to transport Serhii K. to Hamburg if the extradition is approved. His lawyer argues that the operation, if proven, was a military act carried out in Ukraine’s defense and is therefore protected under international law.

While Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government maintains that it can manage the fallout, opposition parties like AfD have seized on the investigation to campaign for cuts in aid to Kiev. Domestically, energy prices remain high, and public frustration continues to grow.

According to the WSJ, senior German officials believe the public is increasingly accepting of Ukraine's involvement in the bombing, making the potential political damage manageable, though some officials reportedly noted that managing the crisis would have been easier had the detectives not built such a compelling case.
