Facebook keeps on taking down Kurdish pages

PostAuthor: Shirko » Sun Oct 20, 2013 3:30 pm

A popular Kurdish page (in the Arabic language) on Facebook has disappeared recently, "raise your head high you are Kurdish" (written in Arabic). This patriotic page was very popular and important for many Kurds who only speak Arabic fluently. This is a blow to freedom and a big mistake by FB.

Facebook has been busy taking down many other Kurdish pages, so is it possible that Turkey alone can have this much influence on FB policy? That is hard to believe.

MONEY

Turkey wanted to block face-book completely a couple of years ago - but FB had millions of users in Turkey and did not want it blocked because they would lose money - so FB made an agreement with the Turkish government to remove Kurdish sites - sad but true X(

Was it a page belonging to PYD ? I know that they suppress all references to Öcalan and PKK flags.

If it was written in Arabic I doubt that it would be connected to the PKK :-?

That is a sensible idea, however suspect even a bigger conspiracy than just money. Can how can Turkey really take down FB? That is almost impossible.

I don't know if it belonged to PYD, they were sympathetic to Ocalan and PKK and equally to KRG and all the rest.

Seriously that is the reason - Turkey wanted to totally ban face-book because it allowed the passing of news and information especially among Kurds - and because FB did not want to lose the income they did a deal with Turkey

To my knowledge Turkey is the only country in the world that has such an agreement with FB

There might be around 2 million Arabic speaking Kurds in Syria and surrounding areas, not including the Kurds that are in Kurdish majority areas like WK.

They have already blocked suddenly a page just because of a picture with PKK or Öcalan's stuff. It happened to the journalist Vladimir van Wilgenburg when he posted some pics with PYD officials with posters of Öcalan on the wall (or a story like that). I mean facebook do it blindly, without warnings or explanations.

True but I thought that the majority of the PYD were not indigenous to Syrian occupied Kurdistan :-?

No PYD are a party that are primarily dominate in WK ( Syrian occupied), t they have a growing significant presence in all of Syria.

Is "controlled" an accurate term? PYD looks to be more powerful than PKK, who is really cotrolling who?

I think they are closely related but separate from each other, they consult but not control each other. PYD's top leadership are many former PKK memebers, but the PYD has grown and changed. And even Mr. Salih Muslim was not in the PKK prior to joining the PYD.
