This is indeed a very old tradition. Since I was born here in Sweden I never got the chance to celebrate it. But my parents did. The first thing they did was to preserve food like grapes, honeydew melon, pomegranate and nuts etc by letting it to dry or by placing it among straws. Then it had something to do with calling the spring to come sooner(don't remember exactly). After preserving it they started eating watermelons, pomegranats and other things. They all gathered around a korsi(don't know the name in english) where they could put their foot inside to keep warm and then the older ones started telling stories and the kids were very happy because they were allowed to stay up late. Now this was in my father's village, but my mom lived in a much more modern city so I don't think she celebrated it the same way.

It's actually older than that. It all started when the summerians discovered which day had the longest night.

A Korsi is a type of low table found in Iran, with a heater underneath it, and blankets thrown over it. It is a traditional furniture of Iranian culture. A family or other gathering sits on the floor around the korsi during meals and special events, like Yalda celebrations.

THis is how it can look like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/artsylens/458216233/

it is the longest night of the year, Ayrans celebrate it because after this night, nights are gonna be shorter and shorter, it is a very ancient celebration, many crediable historian belive that Christmas is taken from Shevi Zestan (or Yalda)

because they didnt know jesus birthday ( nobody really mentioned his birthday) and later they decided to celbrate christmas with yalda.

in Slemani some kurdish people gathered and celebrated Yalda by reading poems
