Hasankeyf Matters
WHY HASANKEYF MATTERS A visually compelling open-air museum that engages the imagination in myriad ways, meeting 9 of 10 UNESCO criteria for inclusion on the World Heritage List.
Rare example of a medieval Islamic city, broadly laid out in three sections: fortress, commercial/theological center and suburban gardens of spiritual piety.
Home to three principal mosques representing the “Turkish synthesis” of Central Asian, Persian and Arab styles (distinctive phase in the evolution of Islamic architecture).
The sole example of Timurid architecture in Anatolia (a significant survivor from the period of Akkoyunlu pre-eminence in Eastern Anatolia, Azerbaijan and Iran, predating defeat by the Safavid Empire).
A microcosm of geological time and human history, in a compact area clearly delineated by starkly contrasting topography of mountains, river, hills and plains.

DOGADoğa’s work is driven by the demand to take action to defend nature.Nature, in its essence, embraces people but we cannot maintain healthy communities without diversity in nature. This passionate belief drives our work to save nature as the main source of life.
Our mission is to defend the rights of nature in all its forms and including all its processes, which are necessary for the creation and sustenance of life.
Since 2002, Doğa has been working as a grassroots organization connecting thousands of individuals working for this cause in Turkey and elsewhere. We conduct scientific research and provide solutions for conservation; we establish partnerships and drive policy change. When science and advocacy are not enough to deliver the necessary change, we conduct innovative campaigns to mobilize the public to take action to reverse the trend.
Our work can be witnessed across Turkey, from the steppic plateaus of Anatolia to the Mediterranean coast, from Hasankeyf in ancient Mesopotamia to the Black Sea region. Science is the backbone of the conservation projects Doğa carries out to protect species and habitats. Our work is motivated by indigenous cultures and art that is inspired by nature.
Doğa’s vision and mission extend beyond Turkey, because we understand that nature does not recognize political or national boundaries. In fact, Doğa is a partner of BirdLife International, a network of grassroots organizations operating in over 100 countries and territories worldwide.
Doğa was the first nongovernmental organization in Turkey to recognize the ‘Universal Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth’.
The four pillars that define our strategy are based on different segments of biodiversity, which are all closely linked. The first of these is the Species Conservation program that aims to reverse the global extinction crisis. The second pillar focuses on Key Biodiversity Areas as a network of threatened sites that are globally irreplaceable. The third area of work addresses Rivers and Lakes as the main natural systems interconnecting all forms of life on earth. The last pillar relates to the way people live and interact with other communities – Nature Culture – striving to minimize the human footprint on earth.
Doğa’s vision is to achieve a world where humans respect nature as a whole, live according to their effects on nature and embrace lifestyles where nature will not be in need of protection. While working in line with our values, we continue to build on our achievements to reach this aim.
