International Day of Nowruz

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Nowruz celebrates the start of the Persian spring festival March 21 ever year. It occurs on or around the time of the March equinox.

What do people do?

About 300 million people worldwide celebrate Nowruz, with traditions and rituals particularly strong in the Balkans, the Black Sea and Caspian Sea regions, the Caucasus, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East. Events may include folk dance performances, special concerts, and tree planting ceremonies.

Public life

International Nowruz Day is a global observance. The Nowruz festival is a public holiday in some countries, such as Iran.

Background

Nowruz is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It was proclaimed as an official UN observance because it promotes peace and solidarity, particularly in families. The day also focuses reconciliation and neighborliness, contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities.

Newroz celebrated in Kurdistan mountains

Kurdish New Year Newroz has been celebrated in Medya Defense Zones with the participation of hundreds of guerrillas as well as People's Defense Forces (HPG) Central Headquarters Commander Murat Karayılan, HPG Central Headquarters Command member Delal Amed, Xelat Şemsi, İrfan Amed, Koçero Urfa.

Speaking at the military ceremony which marked the start of Newroz celebration of guerrillas, HPG Central Headquarters Commander Murat Karayılan said that; “Newroz has an important place in the history of our people and region. It is the day of resistance against cruelty and gained a deeper meaning with the uprising of Leader Apo in Kurdistan. Newroz became the day of enhancement of resistance, freedom and democracy struggle. With the efforts of Leader Apo and the bravery of martyrs, Newroz gained a great meaning in the Kurdistan Freedom Struggle.”

Karayılan continued, by commemorating all Kurdistan martyrs and all those who resisted with the Newroz fire in the person of Çağdaş Kawa Mazlum Doğan, and reiterated their promise to enhance the Newroz fire and freedom struggle.

Karayılan ended his speech with slogans “Biji Newroz” and “Biji Serok Apo” which were also accompanied by the guerrillas attending the ceremony.

Following Karayılan's speech, guerrilla commanders wished a happy Newroz to all the guerrillas, after which Karayılan held a meeting with the guerrillas in the area.

The ceremony ended with a cultural event and the dancing of traditional Kurdish 'halay'.

Youcan't see it : but the huge crowd was in the other room and stairs eating and drinking wine, Champagne, etc. :D

Sadly most Kurds do not know enough about their own culture to have the their table prepared properly :-s

Your celebration looks like fun - obviously more people are in other rooms eating and talking than dancing

Kurdish men are the biggest gossips I have ever come across :)) =)) 8-|

Most Kurds I know do not drink alcohol - least-ways not in front of me :ymdevil:

I wonder if any of the people there want to stop celebrating Newroz

How many Kurds are willing to give up their Kurdish identity - culture - heritage and become Mountain Turks again

How many would deny their children and their children’s children the right to be called Kurdish :-?
