The book was written more than 150 years ago and it would be almost impossible to find out the exact meaning after such a length of time. Especially as authors of that time used a more poetic and flowery language than today's colloquial English :-s

I wonder if it is a sort of warning not to become involved with Mary too quickly as she may not be as she appears /:)

That is a guess B-)

Or that the father is selling his daughters sooner than he should, considering their guest is a newcomer and they just met him…

I have to think hard. It might be an expression to decrypt.

At the time the book was written, dowries were paid by the daughter's family supposedly to the daughter on her marriage, but as women had no control over their money it was given into the hands of the husband to do with what he will

A dowry, or marriage portion, is a process whereby parental property is distributed to a daughter at her marriage rather than at the holder’s death. In England, failure to provide a customary, or agreed-upon, dowry could cause a marriage to be called off. Dowries have been an important part of society for thousands of years, going even back to the Roman times. It was a custom had amongst all the classes. By time the Victorian Era rolled around, marriages were no longer arranged, but were mostly made amongst similar if not identical classes. It was frowned upon to marry outside of one’s class.

For the upper and middle classes, dowries were viewed as an early payment of the daughter’s inheritance. The dowry was normally given in the form of money, and depending on the wealth of the family, a decent amount was normally given.

For example, The 5th Duke of Devonshire, one of the richest men in the British kingdom, bestowed an enormous dowry of £30,000 on his eldest daughter. Another example is Lord Byron, who received a marriage settlement of £20,000 from the parents of Annabella Milbanke who, because of Byron’s extravagant lifestyle, still wasn’t as much of an heiress as he needed to wed. His manner of living had put him in debt more than £20,000—which is almost $6 million today.

The size of the dowry was expected to be in direct proportion to the groom’s social status, thus making it virtually impossible for lowerA caA caricature entitled “Reading the Marriage Contract”, circa 1830. It is recorded that in Roman times, some families would mortgage their house in order to provide a suitable dowry. Also, if a couple died without children, the woman’s dowry was returned to her family. This emphasized one particular reason why couples wanted children.

If a woman’s family was too poor to afford a dowry, the economic circumstance may have been forbidden her from ever marrying. One of her few options might be to become a mistress to a richer man who could afford to support a large household. Or, sometimes wealthy parishioners might provide dowries for poor young women of good reputation as a form of charity. Overall, dowries were a significant consideration for the marriage opportunities of a daughter, and for the marriage choices of a young gentleman.

Barham Salih as the new Iraqi President ?

2 spontaneous thoughts :

Iran controls now Iraqi leadership from A to Z.
Not a good news for Kurdistan but after all, since Talabani left the place, all Kurdish presidents are useless in Baghdad.

I always thought Barham Salih a weakling, not fit to follow in Jalal Talabani's footsteps

With the sad death of Jalal Talabani, his entire clan/family collapsed into a bunch of traitorous pigs X(

Erdogan seems happy by congratulating Barham Salih. This man is appreciated by everyone except Kurds themselves :lol:

Nadia Murad got Nobel Prize. I doubt that any Kurds would have believed, before 2014, that a Kurdish girkl AND a Yezidi could be awarded. Unfortunately, the price for that honor is huge and dark.

The fact that Erdogan seems to like Salih has to be bad for the Kurds, personally I do not like Salih

Diet : - 3 kg.

When I am tired and I crave for comforting food, I drink coffee. In Kurdistan also I was a coffee addict. Tea is too light for restriction rules.

My diet :

Basic structure of phase 1

* Breakfast

* 40 g of wholemeal bread or equivalent
* 10 g butter or 25 g cheese
* 1 dairy (3-4% fat) or 2 slices of ham or 1 egg
(optional : a fruit)

* Lunch

* 200 g of raw selection vegetables (low glycemic index) with 1 tbsp of oil
* 200 g of lean protein from the selection (lean meat or fish), cooked without fat with 1 to 2 tbsp of sauce (oil, cream sour, mayonnaise without add sugar, etc.)
* 150 g cooked starch or 50 g dry
* 1 dairy (3-4% Fat) + vanilla / cinnamon

* Dinner

* 200 g of lean protein from the selection (meat or fish), cooked without fat with 1 to 2 tbsp of sauce
* 200 g of cooked selection vegetables
* 30 g of wholemeal bread OR equivalent
* 1 dairy (3-4% MF) + vanilla / cinnamon

Starch : No potatoes, but sweet potatoes are allowed. Rice, pasta : always integral or complete cereals. Quinoa, bulgur are ok. It is easy to find low carbs tables in websites.

This program is both for people who don't like sugar & sweeties (me) AND for sugar-addicts who'd like to get rid of this addiction.
