The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

Merdin, known in antiquity as Marida; According to some sources an Aramaic word meaning "fortress".
that is all i could find. hope you accept that as an answer...
Ez bawerim bi Kurdî Mêrdîn e
Heta niha min lêkolîn li ser navê Mêrdîn ne kirîye lê ez her di wê bawerê de bom ko ew nave ji du qesên Kurdî hatîyên pêkhatin ji MÊR û DÎN vêce tu xelkê wê herêmê î û tu ji min baştir di zanî.
Mardîn was one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Kurdistan, with a Syriac Houses style, like in Midyat. Unfortunately, savage buildings and urbanization had destroyed them, and all the villages around had been burnt in the plain. There, Turks build high modern buildings that spoil the landscape.
