A name from Kurdistan ?

Hello everyone,

I'm Adrian, and I've come to this forum to ask a question about my mother's surname (which I intend to change mine into). Although my grandparents and their parents were born in Poland, the name is not a Polish name (Polish names are easily recognised as such through a system of pre- and suffixes) . Because of the rumoured Middle Eastern ancestry (which could be right, if I look at the appearance of the family. You could take my grandfather, put him in the Middle-East, and he would not stand out. Quite rare for Polish men), I looked at some sites which dealt with Middle Eastern surnames. Alas, I didn't gain much information.

The reason why I'm posting this on a Kurdish forum, is because I think the first part of the name may convey a Kurdish heritage (I could be completely wrong though ;)). The name is Kurdybacha.
I do not speak Kurdish, but is there any etymological information one could extract from the name ? I would be very grateful !

Thanks !

(I'm going to sleep at the time of writing, I'll reply when I wake up)

Wow :D

Hello Adrian...

I am SO glad you decided to pop in and say hello - and of course that you revealed the most interesting thing I have seen since the last 2 weeks... :D

It just so happens to be that you have posted this in a time, when:

1) I just saw a book about Polish immigrants to Iran (mostly the south and south-west of Iran)!
2) I just happen to know what your name means - and I have the story of your family ancestry right here, in my head - and here is how it unfolds:

There were hundreds of Polish immigrants to Iran in the early 1900's - and these settled and lived around Esfahan, Shiraz and other cities in the South and South-West of Iran...

Their arrival was mainly because of the war and the Shah who ruled Iran at the time, was very pro-west and cooperated with the Allies, although they remained "neutral" throughout the war...

I read and saw this in the book I stumbled upon in the bookstore two months ago - but don't take my words for fact, as I am not 100% - and check out the facts of the matter...

Now - so these Polish people lived in Iran - and some stayed and assimilated - while others went back to Poland again when things settled... Either way - your surename, is both interesting and I know which language it is from...

Naturally as you might have found by now, yes - I am hinting at Persian... "Kurdy" or "Kurdi" is in Iranic languages the adjective of "Kurd" - so it basically means "Kurdish" in English... The "-i" suffix is the equivalent of "-ish" in English!

The other word in your surname, is "Bacha" or "Bachah" or "Bacheh" or just "Bache"... This word is also Persian, and it means "Child" or "Offspring" or "Kid" - depending on context of usage...

So your surname as a whole, means "Kurdish Child"...

HOW you got this name? I can't explain that, I'm sorry to say - and I am myself amazed - how would a Polish man be awarded the name "Kurdish child"... Was he perhaps engaged with the Kurds of Iran? Is that why he earned the name "Kurdibache"? Perhaps it started out as a nick-name, given to him by the Iranians (Persians, Kurds or whoever from Iran) - who were familiar with him, and knew of his interest in Kurds?

Why would the Iranians use such a nick-name? Because the Kurds, like all other peoples in Iran, enjoy respect and the interest of the people in Iran - and also review and gossip...

Either way, Adrian - I am very glad you came along and introduced us to your story and your surname...

Please check my words for facts - I am especially unsure about WHEN the Polish immigrants went to Iran - and where in Iran they stayed - although I am pretty sure they were in the South...

So find out if and when ANY of your forefathers were in Iran or the Middle East at all...

I hope I have been of help and lightened up some of the dark corners of your hunt for the truth... :)

You are welcome brother :)

I am glad to have been of help - and I think now you may find out more, based on what I've told you...

I wish I remembered the name of the book - but I don't...

On Amazon.com - I searched for "Polish+Iran" - but none of the finds were the right book which I had found in the bookstore...

But - you need only go to a library and do a search in their archive to find if they have it... Try it - I'm sure you'll find it... :)

With best wishes - and I hope you will find what you seek...
