Hi howzit? Yeah I'm not Kurdish, I'm Hawaiian. I'm trying to learn Sorani Kurdish because of the war in Iraq. I want to learn more about the Kurdish people. I've been told that Sorani is spoken primarily in Iraq as opposed to Kurmanci being spoken primarily in Turkey. Therefore I concentrating heavily on learning Sorani Kurdish AND the Iraqi dialect of Arabic. I'm glad I found this forum for Sorani, I'm having a VERY Hard time learning the Iraqi dialect because I can't find any resources to learn it online and what's worse I haven't been able to find any forums where people fluent in the Iraqi dialect go to often. Therefore I have no-one to question about the language, grammar, vocab., etc. Nice to meet everyone though. :)

nice to meet you Siver, my real name is Kaleha. I say the war in Iraq because I think you learn so much more about people if you can understand their language to some extent. I just want to learn the Iraqi dialect, whatever is the most widely spoken one. hehe. You or diri can take a look at my first post regarding the grammar of Sorani. If you have time and don't mind, you can provide corrections. that would help a ton! :)

It's good, thank you :) All well here...

Likewise I hope...

Hawaiian... Oh gosh... That's quite exotic... :D

Well whatever your reason for wanting to learn Kurdish - It's good... Nice to meet you Kaleha - I'm Sohrab - 22 years old student - based in Norway... I'm Kurdish - and I'm a native speaker of the Kurmancî dialect, although I do speak Soranî too... I am however new to the Arabic script and prefere to write in the Latin script...

Are you exclusively interested in the Arabic script for learning? Or could you also switch over to the Latin alphabet?

Lucky for you - I know where you can get help learning the Iraqi Arabic dialect: http://www.aliraqi.org/forums/

As for Soranî Kurdish - you could try both there and here... We have some linguists here on Roj Bash Kurdistan - but I don't know over there (aliraqi)...

I've already checked your initial post - and although I speak Soranî, I am not used to the Arabic script - so it takes time for me to read it - and there is the second problem which is that written standard Soranî is different from spoken Soranî - so I doubt I'll be of any help as long as the script is in Arabic... But if you're willing to switch to Latin script - I'll do my best to help you out... :)

By the way - Kurdistan is split between four countries, not only two:

Turkey (North Kurdistan)
Iraq (South Kurdistan)
Iran (East Kurdistan)
Syria (West Kurdistan)

And if you need any more info on the Kurds and Kurdistan - please don't hesitate to ask... :)

Hi Kaleha and welcome to RBK, I hope you enjoy your stay here!

Like you I'm a non-Kurd (I'm English) and interested in improving my Sorani, so hopefully we'll both learn lots - both Siver and Sohrab are angels and are very, very helpful!

Take Care.
