The following is a biography of Habibollah Latifi and a brief description of his case, prepared by Kuridstan Committee of Human Right Activists in Iran based on the stories by Mr. Latifi’s family and friends. Habibollah Latifi is a political prisoner on death row being held in Sanandaj prison.

Habibollah Latifi is the seventh child of Soghra and Abbas Latifi. He was born on March 21st, 1981 (first day of spring, and the start of the Iranian new year) in Sanandaj. The first seven years of his life, during the Iran-Iraq war, was spent in the village of Taysar near Sanandaj.

He loves sports and excels in soccer. He played in various soccer teams including Sanandaj Shahrdari (run by the mayor’s office). However, he had to leave the sport just before entering university, because a precondition to continue playing was being a member of the Basij militia. Latifi was an “A” student in the field of industrial engineering. He loves nature and topography in Kurdistan. As a result, Latifi took up mountain climbing. He has climbed many of Kurdistan’s summits.

Although he was born to a wealthy family, he always appeared in public dressed modestly. He was a bright student who received his high school diploma in 2001. In 2002, he was admitted to the University of Ilam for the Industrial Engineering program.

Habibollah Latifi has a keen interest in studying, and discussion and debate around Iran’s social and political issues. In particular, he is most concerned over issues pertaining to Kurdistan. He, along with his friends, was engaged in civil, cultural, environmental, and political activities ranging from involvement with NGOs to more political engagements. He also had the honour of being a member of the environmental associations: Zhianeh Vah and Shahoo.

Habibollah Latifi was arrested on an autumn evening in 2007 on Adab Street in Sanandaj. Eleven Intelligence agents arrested him while he was exiting a computing service shop. He was not able to set eyes on the outside world for four months after his arrest. He spent that time in solitary confinement and he was subject to vicious tortures by Intelligence investigators. On the ninth day of his arrest, he was transferred to a hospital in Sanandaj as a result of a kidney hemorrhage. At the hospital, he was spotted coincidentally by a relative who describes his condition as grave: “A boy with puffed eyes, grey skin, torn lips. He was unable to stand on his feet. He was being dragged by three people while eight military and plainclothes agents were escorting them.” It was later discovered that he had almost died as a result of being kicked and beaten by approximately six people who used batons. His only movement for the four weeks that followed the incident was crawling.

His head was broken in three spots and the repeated kicks had torn his lips. It is noteworthy that Habibollah Latifi protested his condition to Kamyani, the judge assigned to the case. The judge would visit him in his solitary cell to investigate. Kamyani denied any torture and accused Habibollah Latifi of lying.

HRANA News Agency
Report dated: 6th April 2016

The execution sentence of Habibollah Latifi still remains, despite the promises of the authorities. He is still held in Sanandaj Central Prison in the ninth year of his imprisonment without furlough and visitation.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), political prisoner, Habibollah Latifi a senior industrial engineering student whose execution sentence has been suspended in September 2015 is still in his ninth year in prison deprived of furlough and family visits.

No other verdict has been issued to him suggesting a change of the death sentence. HRANA last year quoted his lawyer, Mr. Mohammad Saleh Nikbakht, reporting that after the “demands of the people” and “Amnesty of the leadership” the death penalty of this political prisoner would soon be changed.

A person close to Mr. Latifi told our reporter in this regard: “After all these years, there was no change in the status of Habib. His family are told that the execution has been stopped but they have not been shown any other sentence. They do not let him on leave, he meets his family in cabin and has no visits.”

Habibollah Latifi, a last year of engineering student at the University of Ilam, was arrested on October 22, 2007, and after spending more than three months in the solitary confinement and being tortured was sentenced to death by the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj on charges of waging war against God and corruption on earth by Judge Hasan Babaei.

His lawyers appealed the sentence but in the winter of that year, the Court of Appeal confirmed the death sentence and also the verdict was referred to the Supreme Court for a final appeal where it was upheld too.

Finally, in 2015, in the eighth year of his imprisonment he was pardoned by the amnesty of the leadership and his death sentence was suspended. :ymparty:

We urgently need someone located in the Sanandaj area to help us find out where Habibollah is and what conditions he is living under

Details of any possible release

Or help us to plan and instigate a new appeal for him

PLEASE join us in our hunt for

Habibollah Latifi

Habibollah Latifi (حبیب الله لطیفی) is a Kurdish Iranian law student at Azad University[1] and a Kurdish activist who has been charged with Moharebeh ("waging war against God") and sentenced to death by an Islamic Revolutionary Court in Iran. He is charged with committing acts of violence (a charge he denies) in cooperation with the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) in 2007.

Latifi has been described as "a straight A student and an athlete who loves nature and his country's mountains." He was arrested in October 2007 and sentenced to death in 2008 in a court session that lasted a few minutes and that followed four months of interrogation and torture.

His sentence was upheld by an appeals court in 2009. His lawyer was informed on Thursday, December 22, 2010 that Latifi was scheduled to be executed on Sunday, December 26, 2010 in Sanandaj prison in Kurdistan Province, Iran. His execution was halted after his lawyer requested further investigation into his case in a letter to judiciary chief Sadeq Larijani. Latifi met with his family on Sunday morning.

Amnesty International has asked Iran to commute Latifi's sentence. They note that he had no legal representation at his trial, which was held behind closed doors. "It is clear that Habibollah Latifi did not receive a fair trial by international standards, which makes the news of his impending execution all the more abhorrent," Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa director, said .

Regarding the charges against Latifi, his lawyer said, "He was not even present at Sanandaj during those times and was living a secret life at a different location. We have asked the initial court and the appeals court to look into these accusations and summon all who think Mr Latifi was present at any of these event and state have seen him during. On the other hand, we have asked the family whom have given refuge to Mr Latifi to be summoned and testify in court; which neither issue was addressed. The court has announced the reports of police officials are sufficient enough for the court to decide a ruling."

In May 2011 United4Iran reported that according to several sources Latifi was suffering "from various illnesses, including an intestinal infection, heart problems, and kidney failure."

Latifi's sister said, "I ask all Human Rights organizations and anyone who is able to help to come forward. But I still think what needs to be done has to be from inside the country."

2 Sept. 2015: Habibollah Latifi’s death sentence has been canceled by Ali Khamenei

Since then there has been no new information :((

Defense Lawyer Says 100 Kurds On
Death Row In Iran including Habibollah Latifi

Some years ago it was stated Habibollah Latifi death sentence had been changed to life imprisonment, we hope that the situation has not been change and that Habibollah Latifi is not under threat of a death sentence once again

The Islamic Republic's judiciary has upheld the death sentence for an ethnic minority Kurdish citizen of Iran, his lawyer says.

Hossein Ahmadiniaz insists the verdict against his client, Hedayat Abdollahpour is an unjust decision resulting from an "unfair legal procedure".

The verdict has raised the number of Kurdish inmates on the death row in Iran to one hundred, Ahmadiniaz says.

Based on the last census conducted in 2006, the four Kurdish-inhabited provinces in Iran – West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah Province, Kurdistan Province and Ilam Province – have a total population of 6,730,000. Kurds form a significant portion of this number.

Hedayat Abdollahpour, who maintains his innocence, has lost the final stage of his appeal against the sentence. The verdict has been announced to his lawyer and family.

Ahmadiniaz, the political prisoner’s lawyer told New York based Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), the twenty five-year old auto mechanic, Abdollahpour, was arrested on June 15, 2016, in city of Oshnouyeh (or Oshnavieh or Shonu in Kurdish) and later sentenced to death by a court in Urmia, northwestern Iran.

The arrest took place after a clash between the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps forces and members of Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI).

However, according to the witnesses, Abdollahpour was not involved in the clash and he was called up to repair a vehicle, which he did and left the area long before the shootout.

“Even though he played no role in the clash and wasn’t even there, the death verdict was issued against him” said Ahmadiniaz, adding, “One of the Supreme Court judges explicitly told me and his father that Hedayat was innocent because he had nothing to do with the clash and its aftermath, but the death sentence was confirmed because of pressure from Iranian military and security authorities in Kurdistan."

Earlier, the Supreme Court initially withheld the primary court's decision, sending Abdollahpour's case for retrial to another court in city of Urmia. But on January 18, 2018, Abdollahpour was again condemned to death by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in the city of Urmia for “cooperating with a Kurdish opposition group.”

Later, Branch 47 of the Supreme Court upheld the sentence on October 7, 2018.

Citing the young auto mechanic's father, CHRI reports, "Abdollahpour was physically and psychologically tortured while in custody."

He’s been under torture the whole time, the father reiterates, "But he is innocent. Our son never collaborated with the democrat party."

There are 100 Kurdish citizens inmates on the death row in Iran, says Ahmadiniaz, without naming the convicts.

Kurdish citizens condemned to death, Ebrahim Eisapour, Habibollah Latifi, Houshang Rezaei, Anvar Rostami and Mostafa Salimi are among the 100.

Furthermore, three young Kurdish citizens recently were hanged in Iran.
On September 8, hours after UN Rapporteurs urged Iran to halt the execution of three young Kurds, Fars, a news agency affiliated with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), confirmed that they were hanged

The three, all in their 20s, Ramin Hossein Panahi, Loghman Moradi and his cousin, Zanyar were sentenced to death for armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic’s establishment.

In its latest annual report, London based Amnesty International said that at least 507 were executed in 2017 in Iran.

Iran has been ranked second, after China, for executing convicts.

Every few months I ask the same question:

Where is Habibollah Latifi

For many years my friend and I have tried to find out what happened Habibollah Latifi

Now I feel that I have failed them both

I fear that my friend of more than a decade is either dead or imprisoned, as he has failed to communicate for several months

I feel that I owe it to my friend to find out what happened to Habibollah and have decided to try yet again

Sadly, a great many Kurds vanish and are soon forgotten

Habibollah Latifi vanished within the prison system, so there has to be a record of him somewhere

PLEASE HELP ME FIND HABIBOLLAH LATIFI

Wild Horses Could Not Stop Me Searching Until The Truth Is Known
