Kurdish PKK co-founder Sakine Cansiz shot dead in Paris :((

2 Years on the killing of PKK-linked women in Paris yet to be solved

Two years have passed since three Kurdish women affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were killed in Paris, but those behind the attack are yet to be found, although the French police apprehended two suspects, one of them alleged to have links with Turkish intelligence, shortly after the crime.

On Jan. 9, 2013, Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Söylemez were shot dead at the Kurdistan Information Bureau in Paris.

The killings took place shortly after the Turkish government launched talks with the PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU, to resolve the country's long-standing Kurdish problem.

A Turkish daily claimed in February of last year that the prime suspect in the crime, Ömer Güney, who was arrested for an alleged plot to murder, had close ties to the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT).

The claim was previously denied by MİT following the release in January last year of a video allegedly featuring a conversation between Güney and two MİT agents.

According to the report published on Feb. 20 in the daily, one of the 13 phone numbers on suspect Güney's phone contact list belonged to MİT.

Karşı's report came after Ankara rejected a request from the French Ministry of Justice to reveal the identity of Güney's contacts. Of the 13 numbers on Güney's phone, five were landlines, while the others belonged to mobile phones, the report claimed. Güney is the last person who saw the three victims alive.

The report said one of the numbers belongs to the Erzurum provincial branch of MİT. In addition, the number is registered as such in a Turkish telephone directory system. Although the number was in the contact list on Güney's Nokia phone found at his Paris apartment, it is not yet clear whether Güney had contacted this number.

MİT denied allegations in January of last year that it was the instigator of the murders. A statement released by the intelligence organization also said an internal administrative investigation into the claims was launched.

A video released over YouTube in January of last year allegedly featured Güney and two MİT agents over plans to murder Cansız, who is one of the co-founders of the PKK. The voice recording included details such as where and how to obtain two guns, how to pay for them and how to leave the crime scene after committing the murder.

Then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan suggested back in January that the killing might be an intra-PKK conflict, pointing out that a code was needed to enter the building where the women were killed.

Erdoğan suggested that someone must have knocked and the women must have opened the door, but that they would not have opened the door to someone they did not know. “They opened the door to someone they knew,” he stated.

Apart from the investigation that French prosecutors opened, the deputy chief public prosecutor's office in Ankara also launched an investigation based on the Turkish anti-terror law. Reports in the Turkish media back in 2013 maintained that French authorities did not send the case file of the slain women to Turkey amid disagreements on the extradition of terrorists to Turkey.

Güney, who was reported to have visited Turkey on three different occasions in the year preceding the killings is from Turkey like the three victims.

The murders were seen in Turkey as an effort to derail the ongoing settlement process launched at the end of 2012 to resolve the Kurdish issue between the government and the terrorist organization.

At the time I believed Sakine Cansiz was executed because she would not have agreed to Ocalan selling out Kurdish chance of any form of independence

2 years on and I still believe exactly the same thing

Sakine Cansiz spent her entire life working for Kurdish Independence/Self Rule

In more recent months Murat Karayılan has been removed from his position as de facto leader of the PKK - a position he had held since Ocalan's incarceration

Strangely Murat Karayılan was removed from his position at the behest of Ocalan after Murat requested to send his own representative to visit Ocalan - a request that was refused :-?

Not to forget that Ocalan's lawyers - people who knew him well and who he had trusted with his innermost thoughts - were banned from visiting him and the only people allowed to visit him are those who had never met him previously or had not seen him for a great many years

Triggerman in Paris murders, Ömer Güney, reported dead

It is reported that Ömer Güney, the main suspect in the assassination of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez in French capital Paris on 9 January, 2013, has died.

The trial of Güney, who had previously attempted at prison break, was set to resume in the coming months.

Murat Şahin, a former member of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) living in Switzerland, had said previously that Ömer Güney, the man under arrest since 19 January, 2013 in connection with the killings in Paris of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez, was a member of the MIT.

It is reported that Ömer Güney, the sole suspect in the assassination of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez in French capital Paris on 9 January, 2013, has died.

French authorities have informed Cansız, Doğan and Şaylemez families about the death of Güney whose trial was set to resume in the coming months.

Ömer Güney was going to be put on trial in Paris Special Court of Serious Crimes. Güney was accused of murder in relation with a terrorist organization,

The families said they have learned about Güney's death as they gathered today to assess the information submitted to their lawyers yesterday that Güney was severely ill and would demand to be released.

French authorities have made no official statement yet regarding the cause and time of Güney's death.

Turkish officials refused to cooperate with investigators and did not share the information MİT had on the massacre. The French government only publicized a few documents that had already been known by the public, and has been hiding the information it has on Ömer Güney. Investigators note that Güney was an MİT agent who infiltrated into the Kurdish movement for espionage and assassinations. French prosecutor Jeanne Duyé decided to close the case in May, 2015, two years after the massacre.

According to a last year's report based on judicial sources close to the dossier, the investigators, without having been able to demonstrate, suspect MIT, the Turkish secret service, of involvement, as well as instigation and preparation of assassinations.

"Ömer Güney was proved to be involved in espionage activities, to have contacts with individuals in Turkey, and to have included the participation of a member of the MIT in his foiled plan of escape from prison during the investigation", detailed the source.

A document on the massacre points at arrangements in Ankara, and this document helped further the investigation. On January 12, 2014, 3 days after the first year anniversary of the massacre, the shooter was heard in a voice recording leaked online as he spoke to two people from the Turkish intelligence on assassination plans. Two days after this recording’s dissemination, the written document instructing the shooter to assassinate Sakine Cansız became public. This document carried the signatures of MİT Branch manager O. Yüret, Department manager U. K. Ayık, Vice president S. Asal and President H. Özcan.

The document was originally issued on November 18, 2012, and emphasized that 6 thousand Euros were paid for the massacre.

Sakine Cansız, a co-founder of the PKK (Kurdistan Worker's Party), KNK (Kurdistan National Congress) Paris Representative Fidan Doğan and Kurdish Youth Movement member Leyla Şaylemez were assassinated at the Kurdistan Information Centre in the heart of Paris on 9 January, 2013.

All the details and information revealed so far carry the traces of the murders to the Turkish capital Ankara.

An audio tape which contained the voice of Ömer Güney, who had infiltrated the Kurdish movement, talking to two Turkish intelligence operatives, was put on the internet on 12 January 2014, three days after the first anniversary of the murders.

The assassin, whose family had MIT (Turkish intelligence) links, discussed his activities in Paris, how he would eradicate his targets and the required money and weapons.

Two days later, a revealed document dated 18 November 2012 named various intelligence operatives and mentioned 6,000 Euros for ‘possible expenses’. In addition to Sakine Cansız KNK Executive Council member Adem Uzun was also mentioned in the document and attention was drawn to the fact that Sakine Cansız came to Paris a few days after Adem Uzun’s arrest on 6 October 2012 in a scandalous operation.

The joint conspiracy by French and Turkish intelligence against Uzun only emerged during the investigation into the murder of the three women, and he was released on 9 August 2013, with the French justice system accepting that ‘evidence had been illegally gathered’.

An investigation was also carried out by prosecutors in Ankara, but they refused to share information regarding the assassin with Paris.

Both French intelligence and Turkish intelligence refused to tell the French prosecutor what they know. In Turkey efforts were made to prevent the MIT being accused of involvement.

In April of 2015, the French government partially lifted restrictions on the publication of intelligence reports. 39 documents from the Internal Security organisation, DGSI, and 7 documents from the External Security organisation, DGSE, had been redacted.

I remember that when he was arrested, his lawyer told to the press he had brain cancer. He was cured and did not work. So 3 years later, it is not a surprise he died.

But I am not sure that his trial would have allowed to discover the truth. Güney was a pawn of a large plot.

The truth was that he was MIT agent according to French Intelligence service. His mission was to infiltrate and kill, which he did.

Cansız, Şaylemez and Doğan families protest the non-trial of Ömer Güney

Cansız, Doğan and Şaylemez families met yesterday to assess the information submitted to their lawyers that Güney was severely ill and would demand to be released. The families were then informed by French authorities that Güney, who was set to be put on trial next month, was dead.

Sakine Cansız's brother Metin Cansız, Fidan Doğan's father Hasan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez's father Cumali Şaylemez released a statement on learning about Güney's death.

Cansız, Doğan and Şaylemez families said the followings in their statement:

“16.12.2016 Friday evening, our trial lawyers informed us that the sole suspect Ömer Güney was critically ill according a most recent medical report of his, that his lawyer demanded his release, and that this demand would be discussed by the court on Monday, 19.12.2016. We therewith met on Saturday to evaluate this situation and we were informed right then that the suspect was dead.

The investigation into the incident lasted three years and was concluded in May, 2015. Still, the trial did not begin and it was never announced when the court would hold the hearing. After a long while, the date for the first hearing at Paris High Criminal Court was determined as December 5, 2016. In June of 2016, the date of the first hearing was changed as between January 23 – February 23, 2017 without any reason being put forward.

Despite the fact that Güney was known to be facing with health problems since the first day of his arrest, and continued medical reports highlighted his health problems, why wasn't his hearing held until now?

Why did those who were informed of his health problems carry on the investigation for three years although no single document was added to the case file apart from some official documents during the first two years?

Although the investigation was finalized in mid 2015, why was the trial set for January, 2017? Was the hearing deliberately postponed from December 5, 2016 to January 23, 2017?

As is stated in the case file and indictment, this is an organized incident and the perpetrator is not one single person as the Turkish MIT (Intelligence Service) is behind the incident. Despite this much information available, why were others responsible for the incident not reached and why was the case file grounded on one single suspect alone?

As families of the victims, we demand an answer to these questions.

We have repeatedly demanded the exposure of those behind this massacre. As Kurdish people and families of victims, we have voiced our demand for justice and exposure of the truth in a democratic manner numerous times so far, and we have called on French judiciary to take action on this issue. We have also warned all relevant political institutions that those responsible shouldn't be left in dark for the sake of political and economic interests.

We have warned again and again that the suspect could be made away with. Unfortunately, we turned out to be right finally.

It seems this scenario had been written and put into practice already. Had Güney been put on trial, not only he himself but the Turkish state, Turkish MIT and the Turkish government would have been tried and sentenced as well. This is what was tried to be prevented, and consequently obstructed indeed. Ömer Güney was a pawn, the elimination of which brought the Turkish state under protection.

French authorities are responsible for the emergence of this situation.

We as families of the victims will be a strict follower of this case. The perpetrator is not one single person and other perpetrators must be exposed and tried as well. This file cannot be closed and the Turkish state cannot evade trial just because one suspect has died.

We demand assistance from everyone that seeks justice."

Was Ömer Güney’s death planned?

It has been almost four years since the three revolutionary Kurdish women were murdered in Paris. The trial for the massacre was expected to start on January 23 but the suspect Ömer Güney died suddenly.

According to sources close to the case, the trial was to start on January 23 in Paris and would continue until February 24. PKK founding member Sakine Cansız, Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) Paris Representative Fidan Doğan and Kurdish Youth Movement member Leyla Şaylemez were murdered on January 9, 2013 in the Kurdistan Information Center in Paris with three bullets to their heads. The suspect Ömer Güney was arrested in the same month and placed in Fresnes Prison in Paris.

Judge Jeanne Duyé charged the suspect with “committing murder in individual or collective conspiracy to heavily disrupt the public order through terror or intimidation”. In a follow up indictment dated April 28, 2014 charges for planning to escape prison with intention to procure arms and explosives was added to the demanded sentence as an additional 10 year sentence.

THE CASE HAS EFFECTIVELY BEEN HALTED

But, as the trial was expected to start after four years, the suspect’s body came out of the prison. According to judiciary sources, he died in a hospital in Paris on December 17, 2016. The same sources claimed Güney had suffered a serious brain condition. There were no indications that his health was deteriorating up to that day. With his death, the trial has effectively come to a halt. As the families were waiting for justice for four years, France once again failed to display the will to put on trial the political murders committed by foreign intelligence agencies on its own soil.

WAS HIS CONDITION MANIPULATED?

This sudden death has led to many questions. Can Güney’s sudden death be seen as of natural causes? Could his condition have been manipulated so he would die as fast as possible? Was the long delay of the trial aimed at waiting for Güney to die?

WHY AREN’T THOSE WHO GAVE THE ORDER PUT ON TRIAL?

Although the role of the Turkish intelligence agency was stated clearly in the prosecutor’s indictment and the investigating judge’s file, how could this important case come to an end? Even though the hitman is dead, why aren’t those who gave the order found and put on trial? The investigation itself pointed at Ankara for the massacre. Who is benefiting from this suspicious, even seemingly programmed, death? Who is protecting the people who gave the order, and why? The death of the suspect may stop a case, but how can it stop the questioning, the doubting, the asking and the search for justice?

ANATOMY OF A MASSACRE: MİT’S PLANS FOR ASSASINATION

Let’s go back to the beginning. How and under what conditions did these murders take place? There is a wide array of data on both the murderer’s profile and the revolutionaries he targeted and his possible purpose. It has also been determined in the case file that the suspect has ties to the Turkish intelligence agency and received orders for the murders.

HE WENT TO FRANCE FROM GERMANY

Ömer Güney, born in 1982 in Şarkışla, Sivas, has residency in France. Güney got married in 2003 in Germany and stayed married for 7 years. There are no indications that he or his family had any sympathy for Kurds. The murder suspect is from a Turkish nationalist background, but around the end of 2011, he suddenly moved to France and joined the Kurdish association in Villiers-le-Bel.

HE MADE A PLACE FOR HIMSELF IN THE ASSOCIATION

At the time, the association was in need of a French speaker with a driver’s license. Güney took advantage of this, and tried to make a place for himself in the association with the quiet, calm and helpful profile he created for himself. Later he started making encrypted phone calls with the Turkish intelligence agency with different cell phones he used.

DETAINED IN THE NETHERLANDS

This suspicious situation first emerged in December 2012 in a village in the Netherlands’ Zeland region during meetings organized by the Kurdish youth movement that lasted a couple of days. The Dutch police raided the meeting grounds on December 3 and detained some 50 participants. Güney was in this meeting with the role of driver, he took the young people from Paris to the village. There were two important names from the Kurdish movement in the meeting. The Dutch police confiscated all telephones. Güney hadn’t turned his phone in by the beginning of the meeting but had kept it on himself.

TURKISH SIM CARD IN HIS PHONE

The Dutch police found a Turkish SIM card in the phone. Later, this SIM card and the numbers within was entered into evidence in the case in Paris. It was detected that the phone was active during the meetings and made calls to Turkey.

MİT’S ORDER MARKED “SECRET”

Another document that surfaced in 2014 was signed by high ranking people in the Turkish intelligence: Branch Director O. Yüret, Department Head U. K. Ayık, Deputy Chairperson S. Asal and Chair H. Özcan. The order marked “secret” and dated November 18, 2012 was very clear:

“The Source has the capability to be aware of Sakine Cansız’s (Code name: Sara) activity throughout Europe in the coming period, her communication channels, her correspondence and residence addresses, and he may be utilized for an operational design geared towards neutralizing the aforementioned member of the organization.

In this context, also considering the safety of the Source and the activity, there are plans to issue orders for the Legionnaire to attempt an initiative towards Sakine Cansız (Code name: Sara) with predetermined coded phrases. We request authorization for the plans.”

PRISON ESCAPE PLAN

By the time these documents were published, Ömer Güney, called “Kaynak” (“Resource) within the MİT, was planning his escape from the Paris prison. During his meeting with his “friend” visiting from Germany, Ruhi Semen, the investigators were secretly recording the conversation. Güney asked Ruhi Semen to go to MİT without actually naming it. The address he pointed at was pointing at the MİT headquarters in Ankara. The talks were in code.

THE ROAD TO MİT

Ömer Güney was talking of “safekeeping” when he wanted the MİT to meet with “The Gentleman”. He said he would bring the “safekept” object himself personally when he was out of prison. When he talked about the MİT, he said “Mother”. The investigators took Ruhi Semen’s statement in Germany on January 27, 2014. He defended himself and said his only purpose was to visit, but he was asked certain things. Semen accepted that they spoke in code and confessed that “Mother” meant MİT and “Gentleman” meant a MİT agent. This is present in the case file.

HE DIED IN THE HOSPITAL HE COULDN’T ESCAPE FROM

In searches conducted in Ruhi Semen’s home in Germany, three photographs taken by a phone and some handwritten documents were seized. These documents included an “escape plan”. Güney was planning to escape the Salpetriere Hospital he was to be staying in for an operation, using a gun. This is the same hospital that Güney eventually stayed at and died in.

FOOTAGE VIDEOS CONTRADICT GÜNEY

In line with the instructions, Ömer Güney accompanied Sakine Cansız to a post office in the morning hours of January 9, and they turned back to Kurdistan Information Center later. Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez were also in the office in the meantime. Cansız and Şaylemez were supposed to travel to Germany with a car at around 13:30 After perpetrating the murders in the office, Ömer Güney thought he had left no evidence behind. In his first statement to the police, he said he would visit the Kurdistan Information Center often. However, a camera put on sale in a shop selling technical apparatus, right near that building, was on record by coincidence. The camera of the opposite Carrefour market was also on the record. When compiled, the footage videos were revealed to be contradicting Güney.

MOMENT OF THE TRIPLE MURDER AND TRACES OF THE MURDERER

The footage showed that Güney had left the building at 12:56, and was the last person to see the three Kurdish women. This was his second and last leave from the building. After his first leave, he went to Magenta car park and turned back with a bag in his hand. Autopsy results confirmed that the murders had been perpetrated at around 12:30. According to these results, Sakine Cansız was killed by three bullets fired into her head, Fidan Doğan by a bullet into her face and Leyla Şaylemez by a bullet into her head. Doğan and Şaylemez got two more bullets each into their heads, and the last bullet was fired into Doğan's mouth. While leaving the building, Güney covers his head despite it not being rainy or snowy. Examination made in the office afterwards revealed that spyware had been installed in all the computers inside, and all the information and data had been transferred to some addresses. Inspection on the bag and clothes of the suspect exposed traces of the triple murder. DNA tests also confirmed Güney's involvement in the murders. The exposed documents, phone talks and connections reveal the triple murder to be the work of a state.

EUROPE HAS FAILED THIS EXAM TOO

The first hearing in the case was set to begin on January 23, a time coinciding with the institutionalization of fascism in Turkey and new plans of murders in Europe. A short while ago, Kurdish media exposed some Turkish agents preparing for assassinations against Kurdish officials in Europe. Thousands of agents and informers are guessed to be working for the Turkish intelligence in Europe, mainly in Germany.

The Paris case served as a test for the governments of European states which the Turkish state has been using as an operational zone since 1980's, France being in the first place. The Western countries' criminalization policies against the Kurds and their self-interest-oriented relations with the Turkish state made them weightily responsible with regard to the crimes committed by the Turkish state in Turkey and Kurdistan, and also in Europe. The French and European governments have not managed to shed light on one single political murder so far, and preferred complicity in this last case. What kind of a future can a country that fails this justice exam ever promise to its own citizens? How much longer can this complicity last? Questions will continue to increase as injustice continues, and the pursuit of justice will grow stronger.

It is not unknown for people who are seriously ill, to be approached and offered the chance to commit horrendous crimes in return for large payments to their families (I watch US films)

Demonstration in Strasbourg for Sakine, Fidan and Leyla

The French state and judiciary are yet to shed light on the massacre of PKK founding member Sakine Cansız (Sara), KNK Paris representative Fidan Doğan (Rojbin) and Youth Movement member Leyla Şaylemez (Ronahi) who were killed in the heart of capital Paris on January 9, 2013.

Dozens of Kurds have gathered in front of the governor's office in the French city of Strasbourg today, and called on French authorities to shed light on the murder of three Kurdish women after the suspicious death of gunman Ömer Güney.

Demonstrators urged the French state to not be an accomplice to the murder of the Kurdish women, and chanted slogans against the Turkish state.

Speaking during today's demonstration here, Fidan Doğan's father Hasan Doğan called on the Kurdish people to not allow the Paris murders to be covered up.

Hasan Doğan said he has talked to lawyers whom he quoted as saying: “The only thing you Kurds need to do is not to leave the streets and not to give up on your resistance. If you leave the streets, your struggle will be left where it stands now.”
