Trump told Erdogan he will stop arming Syrian Kurds

The US president told his Turkish counterpart that his country will stop arming Kurds in Syria, Turkey’s foreign minister stated after the two leaders spoke on the phone.

“Mr. Trump gave clear instructions and said the YPG will not be provided with weapons from now,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters Friday afternoon, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

“He also clearly said that in principle, this nonsense should have ended earlier,” Cavusoglu added.

Donald Trump spoke with Recep Tayyip Erdogan by phone to discuss “bringing peace to the mess that I inherited in the Middle East,” he tweeted before the call.

The White House has not immediately issued a statement. Erdogan’s office is expected to release a statement on their conversation later today.

The United States has been arming the Kurdish force YPG in the war against ISIS in northern Syria. The YPG are the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the allied ground force of the US-led global coalition.

Trump “authorized the Department of Defense to equip Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces as necessary to ensure a clear victory over ISIS in Raqqa, Syria,” Pentagon spokesperson Dana White announced in May, saying the SDF was the only ground force that was capable of taking the city.

“We are keenly aware of the security concerns of our coalition partner Turkey,” White said, reassuring Ankara that the US “is committed to preventing additional security risks and protecting our NATO ally.”

Ankara considers the YPG to be an extension of the PKK, a named terrorist organization. The YPG denies the charge.

The US-led coalition has made several shipments of arms and military equipment to the SDF and YPG for the war against ISIS in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.

At a NATO meeting earlier in November, Turkey’s Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli said he provided evidence to US Defense Secretary James Mattis that American weapons were being used against Turkish forces and demanded the US stop shipping weapons to the YPG.

Turkey has also objected to the inclusion of Kurdish representatives at peace talks.

Defending themselves on Twitter, the YPG said their fight against ISIS has saved not only Kurds and Syrians, but also people of the Middle East and Europe. They ask why they should not receive help.

Does ISIS threaten ONLY Kurds and Kurdistan? What is the reason someone thinks only Kurds must fight and defeat the enemy of all humanity, without any help? #Kurds2Geneva

Everyone acknowledges the fact that the YPG have been one of the most effective ground-level force fighting against ISIS

I am certain that ISIS will be delighted with the news - it may well give them the urge to reignite the fighting

If America is going to stop arming the Kurdish fighters is Turkey going to stop arming ISIS fighters?

Abandoning Kurdish allies means withdrawal from ISIS war

If the United States abandons Syria’s Kurds, then they are withdrawing from the war against ISIS, a senior political leader in northern Syria stated.

“We can’t judge what the Americans are thinking,” Elham Ahmed, co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, the SDF’s political wing, told The Associated Press on Monday. “But one thing is obviously clear, and that is if the Americans turn their back on their only partners [in Syria], it means they will withdraw from the fight against Daesh in the Middle East.”

“If they really decide to stop the support, this means they are giving a chance for Daesh to re-appear and spread,” she added, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

The United States is under pressure from NATO ally Turkey to end its support for Kurdish armed forces in northern Syria – the YPG, which is the dominant force within the umbrella group SDF. Ankara deems the YPG terrorists, an extension of the banned PKK. The Syrian Kurdish forces deny the charge.

The United States, as part of the global anti-ISIS coalition, is backing the Kurdish forces in the war against the extremist group in northern Syria, providing arms, military equipment, tactical support, and airstrikes.

Two weeks after Ankara complained that American weapons supplied for the war against ISIS had been used against Turkish forces, the Pentagon announced they are “reviewing pending adjustments to the military support provided to our Kurdish partners.”

A statement from the White House and comments from the coalition indicate this review comes as the focus in the war shifts to stabilization.

Ankara, after a phone call between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Donald Trump, claimed the American leader had pledged stop arming the YPG.

The coalition has stated that it will continue to provide assistance to their allies on the ground in Syria focused on defeating ISIS.

The SDF ousted ISIS from the city of Raqqa in October and are currently battling the militants in eastern Deir ez-Zor province. They have progressed along the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, coming within a few kilometres of the Iraqi border over the weekend.

The SDF are in control of about a quarter of the country.

US estimates Iran sources majority of Syrian regime fighters

The United States has announced that they plan to maintain a military presence in Syria post-ISIS where top US officials estimate 80 percent of regime forces are sourced by ever-expanding Iran.

“The United States will sustain a 'conditions-based' military presence in Syria to combat the threat of a terrorist-led insurgency, prevent the resurgence of ISIS, and to stabilize liberated areas,” Pentagon spokesperson Eric Pahon told AFP on Tuesday, not revealing when or if the United States will pull its troops.

The announcement is likely to rile Iran, a close ally with Syria which has increasingly supported President Bashar al-Assad in the almost seven-year-long civil war.

Iran contributes approximately $6 billion annually to the Assad regime, according to UN statements.

“About 80 percent of Assad’s fighters are Iranian proxies in Syria to establish a land bridge over into the Mediterranean,” said US National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster at the Reagan National Defense Forum on Saturday.

McMaster said that it’s important that the United States addresses Iran’s “growing capability, their use of militias, proxies and terrorist organizations” not only in Syria but in other Middle Eastern nations.

McMaster also warned that Iran is seeking to “fill the void in Iraq and Syria” referring to them as “weak states” which Iran can take advantage of.

Iran has said it “is determined to stay beside its Syrian brothers in the post-war era” to help Damascus combat terrorism, Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Amir Hatami emphasized to his Syrian counterpart Fahd Jassem al-Freij in November.

Freij expressed Iran has backed the Syrian government in the defense of its sovereignty.

Senior Advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Akbar Velayati, while visiting Lebanon early November, said that recent gains in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq against extremist groups is a victory for the “resistance front,” a term Iran and its allies use for an alliance of state and non-state actors who oppose the United States and Israel in the Middle East.

He added the United States is now trying to apply “high pressure” in Syria with the aim of breaking the Iranian-led front.

“The United States, stationed east of the Euphrates River, is after dividing Syria. But what is certain is that the United States will fail in this regard…” Velayati said.

Some in the West worry that Tehran aims to build a so-called Shiite Crescent connecting Iran with Lebanon via Iraq and Syria.
