Greenwich hammer attack leaves two women critical

Police have arrested the main suspect in an unprovoked hammer attack in Greenwich, south east London, which left a mother and daughter fighting for their lives.

Detectives had appealed for urgent public assistance in locating Joe Xuereb, 27, after he allegedly attacked the women at random in Adderley Gardens this afternoon.

Horrified witnesses described how one victim was left with her "face hanging off".

The two women, aged 64 and 30, were rushed to hospital where they remain in a critical condition, police said.

A hammer was recovered from the scene which was "believed to have been used in the assault", a police spokesman said.

Following the appeal for help from the public, police said a woman recognised Xuereb and followed him in her car.

Scotland Yard confirmed they had arrested Xuereb on suspicion of attempted murder at Old Farm Avenue, Sidcup, south-east London.

The broad daylight attack in a residential street terrified witnesses as they rushed to help the two women.

One bystander said the pair were “covered in blood” after the unprovoked attack.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: "It was horrific.

"They were definitely life-changing injuries.

"She was hit in the face and the head, and the other woman was hit in the head. I'm worried they won't survive."

Detective Superintendent Jane Corrigan said: “I would like to pass my thanks to the public and the media for all their support.

"I am extremely proud of my colleagues and the community, who have all done so much to bring this part of the investigation to a safe resolution. It shows what can be achieved when we all work together.”

A Met Police statement said: “The arrest follows an incident at approximately 12:10hrs to reports of a serious assault at Adderley Gardens, SE9.

"Officers attended along with colleagues from London Ambulance Service.

"Two females, believed to be aged 64 and 30, were found with injuries consistent with a violent assault.

"A hammer has been recovered by officers and police believe this may have been used in the assaults.

"Both victims have been taken to south London hospitals where they both remain in a critical condition.

"The two women are believed to be mother and daughter; next of next of kin have been informed.

"A crime scene is in place and enquiries continue."

They found three people with injuries, who were taken to hospital.

STABBINGS are on the rise as new figures
show a surge in knife crime across the UK

As violent attacks spread from cities to the Home Counties, The Sun Online takes a look at the harrowing statistics that are increasing by the day...

How many stabbings have there been in London this year?

Fresh Met figures show that knife crime has surged by 16 per cent as Britain's crime epidemic continues.

Excluding those killed in terror attacks including London Bridge, Westminster and Manchester, there was still a 12 per cent rise in murders - the highest numbers in a decade.

The total number of offences involving a knife or bladed instrument that have been recorded by cops in the year to March 2018 rose to 40,147, a seven-year-high.

At least 51 people have been fatally stabbed in London since the beginning of the year.

So far in 2018 there have been 1,299 stabbings in London up to the end of April, according to official statistics from the Met Police.

A glut of cocaine flooding the country has been partly blamed for the country's violent crime.

In February more than 250 knives and swords were seized across London in just one week and 283 people, many of them teenagers, were arrested for carrying them.

By June, stabbings were reported on a nearly daily basis.

Two men in their 20s were found with non life-threatening "slash wounds" in Kensington High Street in West London on June 11.

On the same day, a man believed to be in his early 20s was left fighting for his life after being stabbed in Bermondsey, South London.

And on June 12, a man in his 20s was knifed outside Tesco in Kensington, West London, and taken to hospital with stab wounds.

Five days later, a 15-year-old was rushed to hospital after being stabbed multiple times in South East London. His injuries are not life-threatening.

On July 2 a teenage boy was stabbed in the stomach with a 10-inch kitchen knife on a busy Islington street.

Ten days later Katerina Makunova, 17, was found slumped in a block of flats in Camberwell in broad daylight.

Witnesses desperately tried to give her first aid before paramedics arrived but she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

A man believed to be in his 40s was stabbed inside a Leicester Square casino on July 16. The incident took place just before 5pm.

London's air ambulance service flew a man to hospital after he was stabbed in Mill Hill, North London on July 22.

On August 1, a 23-year-old was stabbed to death in Camberwell.

The victim, who was rapper in the drill group Moscow17, was identified only by his stage name, Incognito.

Two other men were also stabbed and were taken to hospital.

On August 5, 2018, a man in his 20s was found dead with multiple knife wounds in Cambridge Gardens, Kingston-Upon-Thames.

On August 17, a teen was "disembowelled with a machete" in Camberwell in a 30-strong gang fight "over a belt".

Crime figures released in July 2018 showed knife crime surged by 16 percent.

The total number of offences involving a knife or bladed instrument that have been recorded by cops in the year to March 2018 rose to 40,147, a seven-year-high.

40,147 is only the tip of the iceberg

The vast majority of non-fatal knife crimes are gang related and will NEVER be reported to the police

Only knife wounds serious enough to need medical treatment are reported - gangs do no want police investigations into their actions

Gang members do not normally worry about minor knife wounds and wear their scares with pride

Rayners Lane shooting: Two injured as shots fired at group

Two men have been found with bullet wounds in the garden of a west London home after a group of people was shot at near a Tube station.

The shots were reportedly fired in Rayners Lane, Harrow, at about 17:00 BST after which a gunman fled the scene with an accomplice on a moped.

More shots were then directed at the men on the moped, the Met Police said.

Two men, aged 18 and 25, who were with the victims have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

They are currently being held at a west London police station, a Met Police statement said.

The men who were shot, believed to be aged 18 and 24, are in hospital but their conditions are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police said they were both found in a fenced garden area near Rayners Lane station.

Armed and regular police were called to the scene, along with the police helicopter.

Detectives are still trying to trace the men on the moped and anyone with any information is being urged to contact police.

Sadiq Kahn LOST CONTROL of London violence says Tory Shaun Bailey

Mr Bailey, member of the London Assembly and deputy leader of the Conservative Greater London Authority Group, told Express.co.uk earlier this month fear was growing across the capital

On Monday, the mayoral hopeful lashed out at Mayor Sadiq Kahn, arguing he had shown a lack of leadership when it came to London’s recent scourge of violent attacks.

Writing in the London Evening Standard, he said: “The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has over the past two years shown a distinct lack of leadership when it comes to tackling crime.

“He instead shamelessly blames the Government for the rise in crime and takes no responsibility for this disturbing increase.”

He added: “I am running as the Conservative mayoral candidate to replace Mr Khan largely because I believe he has lost control of the streets."

In a biting attack, Mr Bailey claimed Mr Kahn had squandered money on a “bloated” bureaucracy.

The Tory challenger said: “Before Khan gets the begging bowl out and complains about the lack of Government funding, he should first cut his own bureaucracy.

“Too much of the overall police budget is spent on backroom bureaucrats and not police officers.”

NYPD

London crime: Mr Bailey suggested London should learn from New York and get more police on the beat (Image: GETTY)

Mr Kahn responded by saying Mr Bailey did not understand how police funding operated in London.

Mr Bailey’s comments come as he launches plans to install 1,000 more police officers to combat London’s wave of knife crime.

The former youth worker suggested London should learn from its transatlantic cousin, New York, by getting its police officers “back on the beat”.

But Mr Kahn, who was elected Mayor of London in 2016, rubbished the proposals, arguing they would reduce money for measures aimed at preventing crime, and blamed the Government for a financial squeeze on the Met amid austerity measures.

In an interview earlier this month, Mr Bailey told Express.co.uk: “It’s frightening to see that London isn’t getting any safer.

“Fear in communities is growing across London, they are saddled with the belief that if you step out of your front door, your life is at stake.”

He added: “It saddens me that the Mayor is not taking enough swift action to divert the sadness and loss our innocent communities are continuously facing.”

At least 58 people have been fatally stabbed in London since the beginning of the year.

There were 1,438 stabbings in the capital in the first four months of 2018, according to Metropolitan Police figures.
LBC’s Nick Ferrari makes dig at Sadiq Khan over London violence

The scourge of violent attacks has been linked to drugs.

Labour’s Chuka Umunna also joined the debate this week, claiming politicians from all sides had failed to deal with rising levels of youth violence, as he called for knife crime to be treated like a disease.

Mr Umunna used a speech in Brixton, south London, to lambast the failure of politicians to tackle the violence of criminalised teenagers.

The Streatham MP said: “I think all actors, all different state agencies, politicians collectively, have failed to adequately deal with this problem.

“It's easy to play politics and say if you're Labour it's a Conservative prime minister, if you're Conservative it's a Labour mayor that's at fault here: that's not going to get us anywhere.

“We all collectively need to act and make this a national mission and priority.”

Mr Umunna, a member of the Government's Serious Violence Taskforce, said he did not know if youth violence could ever be eradicated, but believed it could be “substantially” reduced with a “holistic” public health approach.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “Knife crime has devastating consequences on our communities, and our Serious Violence Strategy signals a step change in balancing a law enforcement response with a multi-agency approach.”

Deptford stabbing: Victim named as Shevaun Sorrell

A 22-year-old black man stabbed to death in south-east London has been named by police.

Shevaun Sorrell was found fatally wounded on Creek Road, Deptford, at about 23:45 BST on Saturday.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to a south London hospital but was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The Met said they believed he may have died following "an altercation between two males or a group of males".

"The victim's family are beside themselves with grief and we are working hard to trace those responsible," Det Insp Mark Long said.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course, a Met spokesman added.

The force has launched more than 90 murder investigations in the capital this year.

No arrests have been made and inquiries continue.

Two men stabbed in separate incidents just miles apart in East London

Two men were found with stab wounds in both Barking and Dagenham, London

The men, both in their 50s were attacked with knives in unrelated assaults

No arrests have been made in either case as officers continue to investigate
Two men were stabbed just miles apart in London in another afternoon of bloodshed in the capital.

Police were called to knife attacks in both Barking and Dagenham on Sunday.

Both victims were men aged in their fifties although officers are not treating the incidents as linked.

First, at 12.40pm, a man in his fifties was found stabbed in Station Parade, Barking.

He had been stabbed multiple times in the back.

The man was taken to an east London hospital by air ambulance, according to witnesses.

Later, officers were called shortly after 3pm to reports of a stabbing near the Roundhouse pub near Porters Avenue and Lodge Avenue in Dagenham.

A 50-year-old man was found with a stab wound.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ondon.html
Detectives from East Area CID are investigating both incidents and no arrests have been made.

Knife crime has become a huge problem for the Met Police as the number of people caught carrying knives rises.

This year, there have already been 100 murders in the capital. Police cuts are largely blamed.

There are now 3.3 police officers for every thousand Londoners - its lowest rate since 1998 and 19% below 2010.

London stabbing HORROR:
Man rushed to hospital after Whitton railway station attack

A MAN is in hospital after being stabbed near Whitton railway station in south-west London, with the attacker on the run from police.

Armed officers from British Transport Police (BTP) swooped on the station at around 6.30pm following the brutal knife attack.

The victim, who has not been named, was raced to a nearby hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Train services were suspended between Hounslow and Twickenham as officers launched an urgent manhunt for the suspect.

A BTP spokeswoman said: "Just before 6.30pm, officers were called to a report of a stabbing in the vicinity of Whitton railway station.

"It was believed that the suspect may have entered the station and gone on to the railway tracks.

"BTP officers, including armed officers and dog unit, searched the area, along with colleagues from the Metropolitan Police. The suspect was not found.

"The male victim has been taken to hospital with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Tonight's stabbing is the latest violent incident to take place in London this year, heaping pressure on politicians to tackle the issue.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has repeatedly blamed government cuts to the Metropolitan Police for the surge in violent crime.

Former Metropolitan Police superintendent Leroy Logan yesterday accused Mr Khan of lacking a strong plan to tackle crime.

He told the Evening Standard: "The mayor has no real coherent strategy where you can say that everyone knows where they fit.

"There is just an enforcement approach. He has a strategy, but it is not getting into the wider holistic approach that you need.”

Man STABBED in Croydon, South London as knife crime continues to soar

A MAN believed to be in his 30s has been stabbed this evening on Bensham Lane, Croydon, the Met Police has reported.

Police officers were called at 9.12 and attended the scene along with the London Ambulance Service.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers attended along with colleagues from LAS.

"A male, believed to be aged in his 30’s was found with stab injuries.

"He has been taken to hospital. We await an update on his condition.

"No arrests and enquiries continue."

More than 100 people have been killed in the capital since the start of 2018 following a terrifying surge in knife crime.

The 100th murder victim in London was confirmed last Thursday after a woman burned to death in an arson attack on a house in Woolwich.

Steve O’Connell, chair of the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee, commented: “We have reached an awful total of 100 homicides this year.

“The overwhelming use of knives in these killings presents a severe challenge to the police and our communities.”

Between April and September the Metropolitan Police’s Violent Crime Taskforce seized 1,500 knives and over 180 guns across London.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has come under fire repeatedly for the capital’s shocking spate of violence.

Though he has continually blamed the surge of stabbings on Government cuts.

In April, Mr Khan pushed police officers to increase the practice of "stop and search".

Immediately after his remarks stop and searches increased to 13,000.

But in the subsequent month the figures started to dramatically drop.

In July, figures showed they were at the lowest of 2018, with just 9,690 searches.

Former cop Rory Geoghegan, of the Centre for Social Justice think tank, said: “Instead of responding to spates of stabbings or murders we need to be getting on the front foot about this.

“Stop and search is a preventative power."

A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: “The mayor is leading from the front to tackle violent crime, but it has been made difficult by Theresa May’s cuts to the Met Police and youth services.”

Knifeman 'goes on rampage' and stabs one person on east
London train sparking evacuation at Hackney Central station

A knifeman has gone on a stabbing rampage in East London, injuring at least one

One witness wrote: 'Avoid Hackney Central. Some guy just pulled out a knife'

British Transport Police has confirmed they are dealing with an ongoing situation

The service has been suspended between Highbury & Islington and Stratford
A knifeman has been arrested by police this evening following a stabbing on the London Overground.

One person was knifed in the attack at Hackney Central station in East London.

Pictures from frightened commuters show hundreds of passengers evacuating the station with service suspended between Highbury & Islington and Stratford following the incident.

One witness said on Twitter: 'Avoid Hackney Central. Some guy just pulled out a knife on my overground train and the staff are saying he stabbed someone. Absolutely terrifying.'

Doctor reveals that young people are regularly
walking into Croydon's A&E with stab wounds

A doctor who regularly works in Croydon University Hospital's A&E department says it now a common occurrence for youths to walk in off the street with stab wounds

Rather than calling an ambulance, Dr Noman Mohamed says many knife crime victims are now simply taking themselves to accident and emergency for treatment.

The 30-year-old grew up in Croydon and was a Trinity School student before studying medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

What he witnesses on a regular basis leaves him of the opinion that knife crime is "getting worse and worse".

"We have started seeing patients bringing themselves in to the A&E," he said.

"Kids as young as 14, 15, 16 are walking up to the reception desk with a T-shirt wrapped around their hand, or a towel or something, saying 'I've been stabbed'."

Dr Noman Mohamed regularly treats victims who arrive at Croydon University Hospital with stab wounds

Dr Mohamed, who trained as a GP but works some shifts in the A&E department has treated numerous knife crime victims, including these "walking wounded".

While victims with serious injuries are usually sent to major trauma centres such as King's College Hospital, in Denmark Hill, or St George's Hospital, in Tooting, Dr Mohamed says victims with less serious injuries will often just turn up at Croydon University Hospital.

And this presents challenges.

"The thing with knife crime is, that if we know there [has been] a stabbing [and a patient is being brought to the hospital by ambulance] we have a number of specialists who are called in to A&E, waiting for that patient to arrive," he explained.

"Four or five specialist doctors, often including a surgeon, an orthopaedic surgeon, an anaesthetist, the resus teams, paramedics and nurses are ready to accept that patient when he is brought in."

Whether their arrival is expected or sudden, every stabbing victim adds to the demands on medics.

Dr Mohamed said: "Specialists have patients of their own, so they have to take time away from them to come to A&E to help treat these seriously ill patients, which puts a strain on resources."

The doctor added that surgeons and other A&E medics have become highly skilled at treating knife crime victims because of the number they see - no doubt saving many lives in the process.

The mental impact

But there is another impact on stabbing victims that won't be fixed in the confines of the hospital.

"It's not just the physical impact of the injury, there's a lot of mental trauma too in these cases," Dr Mohamed said.

"The wound is only half the problem. Recovery involves treating that mental trauma, which can include cognitive behavioural therapy."

Referring to his work as a GP as well as in A&E, he said: "Lots of mental health issues can arise after an incident like a stabbing, which can have a huge effect on progression and development and lead to low self-esteem and even post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Even after a life is saved, they still require treatment."

Frustrated by continually seeing victims of violence in A&E, Dr Mohamed added: "A lot of these young people don't realise exactly how dangerous their actions are and the impact that they have not just on the victims but also those around them.

"Posters are great, but they don't always work. I feel like there has to be something more effective and engaging than posters on a wall."

Could music make a difference?

And that is why he decided to write and perform a rap about his experiences in the hospital.

Filmed in his kitchen, the short, candid rap includes lyrics based on what he has seen through his work as a doctor in Croydon.

Dr Noman Mohamed's rap about knife crime

The rap is laid over a track called "London", which was part of a social media "challenge", in which young people rap over the same beat, competing with each other to produce the best rhymes.

Dr Noman admits his attempt was far from professional but it has already received thousands of views on Instagram and Facebeook.

If you are a young person, would music like this influence you to behave in a different way?

Asked if he had plans for more music in the future, he said he could "see the possible power of music as a way to get across public health messages".

LONDON BLOODBATH:
Two police officers stabbed with SCREWDRIVER in Barnet

TWO police officers were stabbed with a screwdriver while on duty in Barnet, north London as the spike in violent crime across the capital continues to escalate.

Cressida Dick on knife crime: It is a horrible phenomenon

The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers were called at 4.45pm this afternoon to reports of a burglary.

Whilst en-route to the scene, they were approached by a member of the public, reporting a man acting suspiciously and armed with a screwdriver in Lawrence Gardens, Mill Hill.

When the two officers tried to speak with the man, they were assaulted by the suspect.

One officer suffered head injuries, whist the other sustained injuries to his arm.

Both were taken to by ambulance to a hospital in north London for further treatment.

Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Following the assault, the3 29-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to a north London police station, where he remains in custody.

This happened just 24 hours after a man was stabbed in Wood Green, north London.

He suffered serious injuries, although Scotland Yard confirmed they are not life-threatening.

Last week, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) released its latest knife crime figures.

They showed violent crime levels at their highest levels in England and Wales since records began, as knife offences continue to soar and the number of solved cases falls.

The ONS said police recorded 39,332 knife offences in the year to June 2018 - the highest number on record.

This was an increase of 12 percent from the previous 12-month period.

Knife crime was worse in the capital, with almost 15,000 offences committed during the past year.

The ONS data includes 91 knife murders, 170 rapes or sexual assaults carried out with a blade and 8363 knife-point muggings.

Clapham South stabbing: Boy killed outside Tube station

A 17-year-old boy has been stabbed to death outside a Tube station in south-west London.

Police found the injured teenager outside Clapham South station in Balham Hill, Wandsworth, after being called at about 16:35 GMT.

The Met Police said the boy was taken to hospital where he died shortly afterwards from his injuries.

Officers have cordoned off the road and pavement around the Tube station, which has been closed.

There have been no arrests, the Met said.

Charity director Robin Pritchard, 47, said he saw the victim lying on the ground in a "pool of blood" as someone gave him CPR.

"It was strangely calm and quiet. I think everyone was in shock," he added.

Another witness, who did not want to be named, said he saw "a bunch of guys" shouting and appearing agitated, with one carrying a large knife.

He added: "I had no idea it was different to any other time the students get a bit noisy, until I saw the knife as I was literally passing them."

Police said the boy's next-of-kin had been informed, but he is yet to be formally identified. A post-mortem will be held later.

The victim is the second teenager to be knifed to death in London within the last 24 hours.

Jay Hughes, 15, died on Thursday night after being stabbed in a south-east London chicken shop.

Meanwhile, two men were stabbed during a fight between kitchen workers at Sony Music's headquarters in central London.

The killing marks the 115th homicide in the capital so far this year, of which 19 victims have been teenagers.

Teens shot on route to children's Halloween party
police reveal horrifying timeline of events

The teenagers, 14 and 15, were shot on the doorstep of a relatives home in a 'motiveless' attack

A pair of schoolboys gunned down on a city street were en route to a children's Halloween party, police have revealed.

Two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, stood on the doorstep of a relatives house on Victoria Road, Handsworth when they were both shot in a horrifying 'motiveless' attack.

They had been at a community centre with friends before heading to a family celebration on the residential street on Friday night (November 2).

At around 8.15pm, they knocked the door and were waiting to join the party packed with young children.

But just seconds before they could safely enter the home, they were targeted by a gunman.

It is believed the shots had been fired from a passing car, which quickly fled the scene.

The bullet pierced through the 15-year-old boy - narrowly missing his spine.

It then travelled straight through his body and lodged into his younger friend.

Horrified relatives opened the door to find the teens collapsed on the doorstep.

The victims are now both in a stable but serious condition in hospital.

The 14-year-old underwent surgery to remove the bullet from his stomach on Saturday.

Detective Superintendent Maria Fox, who is leading the investigation, described how the horrific double shooting unfolded

She said: "This incident has completely outraged us at West Midlands Police, but also the community.

"It is a shocking, appalling, unacceptable incident to have taken place to two teenagers who were on their way to go to a party.

"The two victims were out with friends, they had been to a community centre with their friends as they normally would do, and they then made their way from there to the address in Victoria Road, which is a family related address.

"They were on their way to a Halloween party, it wasn't for teenagers particularly as we understand, it was for younger children, so there were younger children at the address.

"Seconds after they knocked on the door, the firearm was discharged at them and gone through one of the young boys, right the way through him, narrowly missing his spine and into the other victim.

"One was probably stood slightly in front of the other, they've dropped to the floor as the door has opened and then the police and ambulance were called."

Police cordoned off the scene near to the junction of Queens Head Road on Friday night while forensics swooped the area for evidence.

But worryingly, detectives have not been able to find a motive for the attack.

Supt. Fox said the victims were not known to police and the attack is not believed to be gang related.

"We have no intelligence or information regarding the motive for this incident or why these two individuals were targeted.

"There is nothing to suggest that they are in dispute with anyone or any reason why they would be targeted," she added.

In the wake of the shooting, police have stepped up neighbourhood patrols in the area.

No arrests have yet been made and the police are desperately urging any witnesses to come forward.

She added: "We really want to appeal for any witnesses who would have been in the area at the time between 8pm and 8.15pm.

"Whether they've seen a vehicle behaving strangely, slowing down and driving round that block - Queens Head Road, Victoria Road, Babbington Road, Soho Road."

Anyone with dashcam footage or who was in the area at the time of the shooting is also asked to get in touch.
