Northfield stabbings: Three men
attacked at Birmingham nightclub

Three men were rushed to hospital on Saturday morning after a triple stabbing at a club in Birmingham

Police and paramedics scrambled to Medleys club, in Northfield, in the early hours of the morning after three men were attacked.

The victims, thought to be in their 20s, were rushed to hospital at around 2.20am for stab injuries, none of which are thought to be life-threatening.

A crime scene remained in place in Bristol Road South throughout Saturday.

Speaking about the Medleys club stabbings, Jenny Birch from West Midlands Police said: “We are working hard to establish the circumstances of what took place during the early hours of this morning.

"I need anyone who has any information about what happened to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“This is a shocking incident where weapons were sadly used again causing injuries to three people, we need to determine what happened and who is responsible.

“Officers are addressing the rising surge in violence and knife crime. We continue our extra patrols and are still utilising our extensive powers to search people without the need to suspect they are carrying weapons.

“We are committed to tackling the rise in violence in the city and will robustly deal with those intent on causing harm within our communities."

No arrests have been made and an investigation continues.

Muswell Hill stabbing: Boy, 17, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder as teen fights for life after being knifed on London bus

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a teenager was stabbed on board a bus in north London.

The 19-year-old victim is fighting for his life in hospital after being knifed in the chest on the route 134 bus at Colney Hatch Lane, Muswell Hill, on Saturday afternoon.

Police were called at about 4.40pm, and the man was taken to an east London hospital by air ambulance.

His condition remains critical

Detective Sergeant Jon Deans who is investigating the incident said: “There is a young man in hospital in a very serious condition and we are working hard to establish how he came to be attacked.”

The incident comes amid a wave of stabbings across the country which have prompted warnings of a "national emergency".

At PMQs on Wednesday, Theresa May announced she would host a summit on knife crime and said the Government would be putting more resources into policing.

Knife crime rising more steeply outside London

Police Federation head calls on government to tackle ‘national crisis’

Knife crime is rising at a much steeper rate in the home counties and rural provinces than in London, police figures show, amid signs that the growing use of blades is spreading from the cities to the shires.

Guardian analysis of official statistics shows a 45.7% average increase in knife-related offences in 34 English and Welsh counties since 2010, compared with an 11% rise in the capital.

In the home counties, knife crime has risen by an average of 44.8% over the past eight years. Kent recorded the biggest increase of such crimes in England and Wales, up 152% since April 2010.

Police chiefs and experts said the figures were partly fuelled by gangs targeting new customers in rural areas, known as the “county lines phenomenon”, which they said was causing an “overspill” of criminality from the cities to the provinces.

Dr Rick Muir, the director of the independent policing thinktank Police Foundation, said: “Previously, the people selling drugs in Margate or Blackpool would be from those areas. Whereas organised criminal gangs in the bigger cities are exporting drugs directly into these areas.”

Between April 2010 and September 2018 knife crime in Kent increased by 152% – the largest increase in England and Wales

The murders of two 17-year-olds, Jodie Chesney in London and Yousef Makki in Greater Manchester, has prompted police chiefs to demand at least £15m in urgent funding to tackle what one of England’s most senior officers described as a national emergency.

Nine teenagers have been stabbed to death in London, Birmingham and Manchester since the start of the year. The number of knife crime offences remains far higher in the major cities, but the increase since 2010 is steeper in the provinces.

Knife crime is up 11% in London between April 2010 and September 2018. But in the home counties the increases are far higher, albeit from a smaller base. Knife crime incidents in Hertfordshire are up 89%, from 272 offences to 513; Essex is up 43%, from 536 to 766; the Thames Valley is up 43%, from 996 to 1,431.

Figures for Kent show a threefold increase in knife crime, from 346 incidents to 873, over the eight years. Assistant chief constable Nick Downing, of Kent police, said the rise was partly explained by improved recording methods and starting from a smaller figure, however he said the force would not “hide away” from the fact there had been an increase in knife crime.

In the West Midlands, knife crime in the Birmingham police area is up only 3% since 2010, but there was a 42% average increase in the neighbouring provinces of Staffordshire, Warwickshire and West Mercia over the same period, from 959 offences to 1,363.

In Staffordshire, the region between Manchester and Birmingham, knife crime has risen 88%, from 367 offences in 2010 to 689 last year. Supt Ricky Fields, Staffordshire police’s lead officer on knife crime, said county lines drugs gangs were partly fuelling the rise.

“The correlation we think it is attributed to is around county lines, urban street gangs,” he said.

“Staffordshire sits on an arterial route between Manchester and Birmingham and some of our neighbourhood areas have seen an overspill around the travelling criminality and bringing crime into that particular community [from the cities].”

Muir said county lines gangs were often using children to export drugs into provincial towns and that evidence showed a correlation “between knife crime – the offenders and victims – and the drugs trade”.

He added: “They operate on the basis of profit and the county lines model is more lucrative for them. Violence is then used to either deter or suppress the competition or it is being used by the criminals to discipline people in their own network, particularly children.”

Muir claimed there could also be a possible link to the increase in schools exclusions and the cuts to youth services.

“Lots of different things can happen and each on their own might not lead to anything significant but if they all happen in tandem you can get quite a big shift as is the case here,” said Muir.

Craig Kelly, a criminology lecturer at Birmingham City University, said the data showed that knife crime is a national issue and that politicians, media and academics were “far too focused on London”.

He said: “We’ve focused predominantly on knife crime and violence in London for generations. We’ve literally forgotten to ask what happens to the young lad growing up in Wythenshawe or Longsight [in Manchester].”

Kelly said Britain was in the grip of a cyclical spike in knife crime, after a surge of violent offences in 2008 and in the early 1990s. “It always comes after we’ve had some kind of economic turmoil,” he said.

Meanwhile, John Apter, the head of the Police Federation, called on the government to set up a multi-agency group to tackle the “national crisis” exacerbated by the “decimation of youth services” and the increased drug dealing across county lines.

He said: “Understandably the focus has always been on larger cities such as London and Manchester but the problem of knife crime is indiscriminate and it is increasing in other areas at an alarming rate.

“Whether it is gang culture or certainly the cross-county drug dealing – it means people will travel out into the shire forces, the smaller forces, more rural forces to commit their criminality and they will have knives with them or other weapons and they are not afraid to use them.”

Apter, who has been a police officer for 26 years, said the government risked failing a whole generation of young people if it did not change its approach.

“The prime minster needs to do a lot of reflecting because she has got this wrong on a monumental scale. This is a massive, considerable problem and the police need a lifeline which can only be provided through genuine tangible investment,” he added.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The home secretary has made clear that the rise in serious violence across the country is deeply concerning.

“The Home Office is working hard with police and other partners to tackle violent crime on many fronts and across the whole country.”

The spokesperson added that Sajid Javid had recently met “senior police officers and partners to discuss what more can be done.”

Extra £100m fund to tackle knife crime

Police have been promised an extra £100m by the government to help them tackle a knife crime "epidemic" in England and Wales

The money will mainly go to the seven forces where violence is highest.

But the fund - announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond in his Spring Statement - falls short of the £200m to £300m requested by police chiefs last week.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the extra money was "a drop in the ocean" after years of decreasing police budgets.

"Cuts have consequences and the government needs to urgently give our police the funding they desperately need," he said.

Funding to police forces - which comes from central government and council tax - fell by 19% in real terms between 2010-11 and 2018-19, according to the National Audit Office.

Officer numbers have fallen by around 20,000 since 2010.

Mr Hammond initially said police forces must use their existing budgets to tackle knife crime, following requests from senior officers.

The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) welcomed the new money, saying it would boost the number of officers patrolling crime hotspots, increase the use of stop and search, and help to disrupt criminal gangs.

The funding would also be used to fund Violence Reduction Units that seek to tackle the underlying causes of violent crime.

The chancellor's announcement follows a spate of fatal teenage stabbings, with two 17-year-olds killed in separate knife attacks in London and Greater Manchester earlier this month.

Jodie Chesney was killed in an east London park as she played music with friends, and Yousef Ghaleb Makki was stabbed to death in the village of Hale Barns, near Altrincham.

Mr Hammond told the Commons a "wider, cross-agency response to this epidemic" was required.

"Action is needed now. So the prime minister and I have decided exceptionally, to make available immediately to police forces in England an additional £100m," he said.

The money is for one year, with a longer-term funding settlement for the police expected to form part of the Spending Review.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid tweeted: "It's vital police have the resources they need to crack down on the rising levels of knife crime.

"I've listened and we will be giving £100m extra to forces, targeting the hardest hit areas. I'll continue to give police the support they need."

The forces that will mainly benefit from the new funding are: Metropolitan Police, West Midlands Police, Greater Manchester Police, Merseyside Police, South Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Police and South Wales Police.

While 80% of the money is new Treasury funding, 20% is from the Home Office's "re-prioritisation" of funds.

The funding announcement comes after the government in December pledged £161m for police forces, saying it would protect police budgets in "real terms".

It also said police and crime commissioners would be able to raise additional funds by increasing council tax.

Both changes are due to come into effect in April.

NPCC chief constable Sara Thornton said of the extra £100m being promised: "The additional government funding announced today is very welcome. It will help police forces strengthen our immediate response to knife crime and serious violence.

"Bringing violence down is a police priority."

She said all forces across England and Wales were undertaking a week-long intensive operation to tackle knife crime, including test purchasing weapons from shops, weapons sweeps and speaking to young people about the dangers of knives.

"It is a sad state of affairs when the home secretary has to take a begging bowl to the Treasury in a bid to solve the crisis we find ourselves in," he said.

"The government must make a significant investment in the spending review to give police the long-term boost they need."

The new funding comes after the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said there was "obviously" a link between violent crime and falling police numbers.

However, Mrs May insisted there was "no direct correlation".

There were 285 homicides where the method of killing was by a knife or sharp weapon in the year to March 2018 - the highest number since records began in 1946.

I think the government should compensate the THOUSANDS of innocent people who live in fear of these gangs

All those who have had to pay for extra security to protect themselves and their homes

All those who lack a social life because they are too afraid to go out in the evenings

All those who have drug dealers living in their blocks of flats or on their streets

Electric Brixton stabbing:
Crowds flee mayhem as three
are stabbed at rapper’s concert

Three people were stabbed when violence erupted at a US rapper’s concert in Brixton

Police and paramedics were called when three men in their twenties suffered knife wounds at a gig by Californian rising star Roddy Ricch at the Electric Brixton last night. They were taken to hospital before all were released after treatment.

The violence erupted at the end of the set by Ricch, whose songs include Die Young and Area Codes. Video footage showed onlookers screaming and crowds fleeing the venue, and a man with blood pouring from his arm after apparently being slashed.

A man told the Standard: “I received a call from my daughter screaming and crying saying people have been stabbed.

“When I arrived there were police cars everywhere. I found my daughter, she could not stop crying, she was clearly in shock. She had seen two boys with stab wounds.”

A spokesman for the venue said: “Electric Brixton has never experienced an incident like this in its history because we pride ourselves on our stringent and rigorous security procedures.

“The safety of our guests is paramount and as such, wand searches and body searches are used by security personnel before entry; these processes are in accordance with police guidelines.

“We will work with the authorities to examine what happened and if new measures need to be put in place.”

Scotland Yard said police were called at 10.30pm, adding: “It is believed that a fight broke out in the venue during which three males are believed to have been stabbed.” There have been no arrests.

In a separate incident, two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were stabbed during a fight in Albany Street, Camden shortly after 11pm last night.

Gangs’ postcode rivalries force probation
workers to provide duplicate services

Youth workers are running duplicate services in the same London borough to reach young people too scared to enter “rival” territory, it has been revealed today

Chief Inspector of Probation, Dame Glenys Stacey, said staff trying to divert young offenders from crime in Wandsworth “must take account of territorialism when arranging appointments” because some “will not go into certain areas”.

She praises staff for making provision to meet where juveniles “feel safe”, adding: “On occasion, provision is duplicated in different areas, so all children and young people can access it.”

No details were given about the specific appointments provided in duplicate, but youth offending teams’ work includes supervisory meetings, as well as specific projects, from jobs with the homeless to working on allotments, to give young people a new focus.

Dame Glenys’s disclosure comes in a largely positive report on the effectiveness of the youth offending team in Wandsworth. It is the capital’s biggest inner London borough and contains about 60,000 under-18s, of whom 22 per cent are classed as living in poverty.

But the report will reinforce concerns about the way “postcode” gang conflicts continue to blight London and the prospects of some of its young people. It also reveals that efforts are made to keep potential gang rivals apart at court and at other places where they might encounter each other.

The report praises the focus on maintaining effective working relationships with the children concerned and the use of schemes, from working with the homeless, arts and crafts, and working at a football club, to help turn young offenders’s lives around.

Dame Glenys expresses concern about the varying approaches taken when young people bring knives to school, with some choosing not to call the police, while others do.

She says this “can result in a discriminatory process” for some young people and fails to “take account of the wider vulnerabilities” some might suffer.

Youth offending teams deal with children aged 10 to 18 who have been prosecuted or referred after coming into contact with police.

When a friend of mine was in the Home Office Prison Service, she was responsible for separating the gangs into different wings of the prisons

The Home Office knew all those years ago that there were severe problems between different gangs - apart from my friend - I doubt anyone else in the entire Home Office took any notice of the seriousness

Student left 'frozen in fear' as gang robbed
him at knifepoint yards from Cricklewood home

A student today told of his terror at being ambushed and robbed by knife-wielding thugs yards from his home

James Alan was returning when he was shoved against a wall and threatened.

The 25-year-old, who studies HR management at the University of West London, said he was “frozen in fear” during the attack in Cricklewood.

He said: “I was walking home when I saw three guys wearing hoodies in front of me, they looked very intimidating so I looked down and continued walking.”

But, they approached from behind. “One pushed me against the wall, another held on to my left arm, and one got out this large knife with a red handle and pointed it at my stomach.

“They were shouting at me and verbally abusive, asking me where I am going and demanding my wallet and mobile phone.

"When I saw the knife, I emotionally and psychologically passed out.”

Mr Alan said his wallet and iPhone were taken.

There have been no arrests after the robbery, which happened at 7.30pm last Thursday.

The gang killers who are YouTube celebrities

Those who kill sometimes achieve a certain level of infamy. But in the case of three young musicians who have been convicted of a gangland murder, their fame preceded their crimes. How did Aristote Yenge, Kyreis Davies and Isaac Calver make such an impression on their hometown?

"They're famous," says 16-year-old Daniel Alfonso, a member of a youth music project in Ipswich. "They would be recognised around here, 100%," agrees his collaborator Martel Ford, who is also 16.

In 2019, it's entirely possible to be known by almost every young person in a town with a population of more than 130,000 people, thanks to the democratising effects of YouTube. If you have something to say and can say it compellingly enough, the audience will find you.

And Yenge, Davies and Calver had both a medium and a message. As members of the trap music collective YTBYTN, their faces and music are recognisable in playgrounds across the Suffolk town.

YTBYTN's tracks have an ominous feel, with bleak and gritty lyrical content that cover themes of street life, poverty and violence.

In the videos, several of which have exceeded 100,000 views on YouTube, Davies and Calver can be seen apparently making crack cocaine, swigging alcohol and flaunting cash.

As well as appealing to their own age group, YTBYTN have a following among the town's pre-teen children, as Ipswich community worker Cad Taylor points out.

"We have done work in primary schools with lots of young children that know the lyrics, and there is some kind of thing around local celebrity status, however negative some of those things portrayed are."

In the wake of a spate of recent knife killings, the music of YTBYTN was even raised in the Commons by Ipswich's Labour MP Sandy Martin, who said he'd only just learned of the existence of the videos.

Speaking in Parliament, he told Home Secretary Savid Javid that "we cannot afford to have this sort of glamorisation of a gang lifestyle still available on social media".

How Yenge, Davies and Calver came to be in court is a depressingly familiar story.

Two rival groups of young males engage in a "turf war", in this case J-Block versus Neno. They start trading insults and, before long, their exchanges become violent.

On 2 June this culminated in the death of 17-year-old Tavis Spencer-Aitkens, who was repeatedly stabbed in a group attack involving, among others, Yenge, Davies and Calver.

For those who followed the musical exploits of YTBYTN on YouTube, the violent conclusion to this dispute cannot have been surprising.

Rivalry between YTBYTN - who identify with the J-Block gang - and the other group can be seen in the videos.

Using a gesture to show the number three, representative of the IP3 postcode area where Tavis came from, and a gun shape with the other hand, Davies and Calver can be seen denouncing the rival Neno gang.

That group, which uses the name DaRealSideofIpps on YouTube, can been seeing spraying their tag in rival J-Block "territory", even filming Calver looking out of his window.

Tavis himself can be spotted in these music videos, which according to US hip-hop expert Prof Murray Forman were "something adjacent at the very least" to his murder.

Most of the YTBYN videos have a professional and crafted look to them.

Davies and Calver can be seen swaggering alongside Yenge in their Arsenal and Chelsea football tops, or in expensive designer wear against urban backdrops.

In one video, Davies, who performs using the name Youngz, sings: "That is Youngz, can I have a picture please? 'Course you can, but can you be quick? I've got a pack on me, and I've just seen CID'."

The lyric reflects their popularity, as do various images posted on Instagram.

Selfies of Calver from his prison cell were liked hundreds of times within hours of being posted on his personal Instagram account.

There was even a social media movement while they were on trial, with the hashtag #3daguys, in support of them being cleared.

Media captionMusic videos posted on YouTube featured raps about poverty, drugs, money and women

It would be easy to dismiss YTBYTN as nothing more than a bad influence on the youth of their hometown, on the basis their lyrics make repeated reference to drug-dealing and conflict with the police.

But that overlooks the fact that rapping about the realities of urban life can be an escape route for young men from disadvantaged backgrounds, and it also ignores the reality that their music is compelling enough to be popular in the town.

Despite some "questionable life choices", Davies, Calver and Yenge "found their own niche", according to Ipswich youth worker Mark Straw.

He says the town's youth service, which has since become part of the larger children and young people directorate, previously recognised the "value of supporting young people" and "celebrated youth sub-culture".

They used to have youth workers at schools, youth centres and "professionals young people could access if they needed to", he explains.

"These guys [YTBYTN] have got talents, these guys have got skills, these guys have created their own beats, these guys have got ideas, innovation, an entrepreneurial outlook on life," he says.

"Why can't we actually work with those young people to increase a level of accountability or responsibility? I can't say you can take a horse to water and it'll drink, but we can provide some sort of connections.

"One of the first tracks they put out, the guys say 'look at what you've created' - they're a product of the system."

In one of their biggest-hitters, Poverty, which has more than 140,000 views on YouTube, they sing: "I just want to leave the hood and all the poverty."

Mr Straw, who has been involved in youth work for 25 years, describes it as a "real revelation" and a "beautiful tune".

Their earliest track, the 120,000-hitter I Founda Plug, is about making money through selling drugs, with the lads parading their £500-plus Giuseppe Zanotti designer trainers in the video.

In it, the collective sing "behind bars, that's where all my friends are".

I Founda Plug is "the one most kids know", says Ms Taylor, a trustee of Ipswich Community Media.

She says the children "may not understand the references being made in the language" but they "certainly love to sing that song".

"Which means the song is accessible interestingly to kids - they just sing it," she says.

What is trap music?

Trap, a subgenre of rap, originated in the southern United States at about the turn of the century

Musically, it is characterised by heavy bass and menacing, atmospheric synth sounds

Lyrically, it is heavily concerned with street life

Trap (short for "trap house") is a slang term for a place where drugs are produced and sold, but from the start the double meaning - the idea of being "trapped" on the streets - was present

Like gangster rap before it, trap blurs the line between realism, sensationalism and social commentary

Charlize Nicholas, 14, who lives in a village just outside Ipswich and is part of a community music project, says: "People look up and see people who are local and they are almost role models - people older than them who they know are local and they are getting these minutes of fame.

"It's something for them to look up to."

For Ms Taylor, it might not be ideal that YTBYTN are influential, but it is the reality of the situation.

"You are looking for role models and, unfortunately, if someone is making music and everyone is singing their songs, then that becomes your role model."

A co-director of YTBYTN, which registered as a company in April 2017, explains that she was initially concerned about the content of the music videos.

She says I Founda Plug attracted "negative attention", but Davies and Calver were only 14 and 16 at the time and it was "a part of them being children and not listening".

What's more, trap music was "very popular" and YTBYTN wanted to make "music that was fashionable".

"They hit 30,000 views within two weeks," she says.

"You thought 'this could be perceived wrong', but once they put one out, there was no stopping them."

Prof Forman says that what's interesting about the music is "they're doing everything right and well enough to be appealing".

He says that while the "freeform and amateurish" videos are "entirely conventional in the genre", they have an "authenticity that other youths in the region might respond to favourably or sympathetically".

He adds: "The videos convey a playful effect that can also be appealing.

"The youths joke around, act the fools, and in the instances where the production is clumsy, they seem to openly acknowledge and laugh at their foibles."

For University of Suffolk criminologist Dr Paul Andell, the "generalised patterns" seen in trap music videos tell a story "not as a direct representation of reality but a looped reality".

He says in such instances what can happen is that the "street scripts the screen and the screen scripts the street".

"In this looped reality, each click on to YouTube is a repeated disrespect, where the virtual violence of lyrics can take a real turn."

He adds: "Myth-making is a recognised characteristic of gang culture and these myths are often propagated by YouTube clips; this consigns gang affiliates into a 'wannabe' status.

"In sub-cultural terms, wannabes are quite dangerous because they will go the extra mile to be noticed."

He says the size of Ipswich, which is one of the bigger towns in the country, is "relevant in these terms".

The charisma and confidence that helped YTBYTN become popular in their hometown was mirrored in the courtroom.

During the trial, Davies spoke openly about dealing Class A drugs from the age of 13 and "reloading" crack cocaine from his supplier.

Standing in front of a packed public gallery, he came across as self-assured and undaunted.

But Davies, who turned 17 during the trial, was unable to persuade the jury of his innocence. Now he, Calver, 19, and Yenge, 23, have lost their liberty for taking the life of a teenager, for reasons that were seemingly intertwined with their YouTube personas.

The trio, with others, "hunted their prey and showed no mercy" as they purposely travelled across Ipswich and stabbed Tavis 15 times, smashed a bottle over his head and left him to die.

Police say the gang members were very well known to officers and if Tavis hadn't been killed, then "almost certainly" someone else would have been.

The Suffolk force set up a youth gang prevention unit in March 2017 "because of those boys", according to a police officer who works undercover in Ipswich.

He says they tried to steer them away from crime but it "was quite clear they weren't going to change their ways", and police eventually "exhausted all the ways" they could "feasibly and reasonably" help them.

For rap DJ Angelle Joseph, what happened on 2 June is a waste of talent, and a waste of several young lives.

The youth and community worker, who presents BBC Introducing in Suffolk, says: "Music is free expression and something they were good at, and they had room for development.

"But now that's gone."

Davies, Calver and Yenge are due to be sentenced on 29 April.

London stabbing victim is revealed
as cousin of GMB’s Alex Beresford

Man, 29, stabbed to death in west London

Police are investigating after a man died in a stabbing in west London.

Officers were called to a fight in Fulham on Gowan Avenue at 12.27am on Saturday, where they found a man, 29, who had suffered stab wounds.

Londoners rushed to his aid until an ambulance arrived. The victim received further treatment for around 30 minutes from paramedics but died at the scene just before 1am.

A friend of the victim, who has been named locally as Nathaniel, described him as a "good guy" today.

"It's still processing, he was a good guy, he was a big man, 29, you don't do silly things like this, knife crimes."

The friend, who asked not to be named, said he was not aware of similar violent incidents in the largely quiet residential area but added: "There might have been a stabbing in this area, don't get me wrong, but they are normally with kids, not people our age.

"Even if there was a little problem it should not have led to this."

Another friend, who gave his name as George, said he went to Southampton University with Nathaniel, who then moved back to the area to find work.

Speaking near the victim's home, he said: "We don't know how this happened.

"He's got a lot of friends who live local to here. He was well-known in the local area.

"Everyone in the area would have know him from basketball."

He added: "He was super friendly, a BFG. He looked super scary - six foot seven, big beard - but super friendly. It would shock you how friendly he was."

Neighbours said they heard an argument at about 12.30am before police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "I heard an argument but not very loud screams, not a violent argument, no tussling and then they just wandered off.

"I heard no screams at all, you expect a fight and a scream but there was not really any of that, just loud voices."

The victim's next of kin have been informed. Scotland Yard's Homicide and Major Crime Command is investigating.

Police at the scene of the stabbing on Saturday (PA)

Police said they are still working to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

Officers said they wanted to trace a light skinned black male, around 6ft tall who was seen near the scene at the time of the stabbing.

DCI Glen Lloyd said: "This murder investigation continues apace. Police work at the crime scene is ongoing. Active enquiries are in hand.

"We are appealing for information from those who were out and about in the area at the time of the attack and saw anything of note.

"My team is particularly keen to trace a light skinned black male, approximately 6ft tall who was seen near the scene at the time of the incident. Did you see him? Do you know who he is? Anyone with information on his identity or whereabouts is urged to contact police."

There have been no arrests.

Gowan Avenue is the same street where TV presenter Jill Dando was shot dead on April 26, 1999.

Police are currently surrounding a red car, in which the man - who told officers he had a gun - is thought to be sitting.

Drivers clash with baseball bat and machete

Two men brandishing a machete and a baseball bat were filmed confronting each other in broad daylight in a shocking road rage attack in London

Police were called at around 3pm to Brockley, near south east London yesterday after reports of an armed conflict.

The two drivers had parked in the middle of a residential street and emerged shouting and screaming at each other after trying to 'ram each other off the road.'

Machete-wielding Mercedes driver takes on baseball bat-wielding man

Both cars were damaged during the violent incident which took place at 3pm yesterday

One of the men was armed with a machete and chased the other driver and his companion

At first, the Audi driver used his baseball bat to damage the black Mercedes, but a large man got out of that car and started chasing him with a machete.

Waving the blade around, the man, who was wearing a balaclava, threatens the other man's female companion before using his weapon to attack the Audi.

One witness said: 'Before I started recording the video, the guy with a machete ran back and put a gun back in the car.

'He was waving it around and traffic was trying to scurry away.

'My friend saw them driving on the other side of Brockley and they were trying to ram each other off the road.'

Tom Hill filmed the attack from his lorry as he sat waiting to pass.

The 23-year-old lorry driver, from Erith in south east London, said: 'I was driving back to the yard on Wednesday afternoon and that unfolded in front of me.

'There was shouting and a lot of swearing.'

A woman approaching the street said she was told to 'turn back' because there was a man with a machete and a gun on the loose.

She added: 'It was all really frantic at the time.'

Both cars collided into each other as the drivers attempted to escape from the scene

Police confirmed that a machete, an air pistol, a baseball bat and other weapons were recovered from the scene. One man was arrested on suspicion of a firearms offence

A Met Police spokesperson said: 'People were seen in possession of weapons and a firearm.

'A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearm offences.'

Police said that a machete, air pistol, baseball bat and other weapons were recovered from the scene.
